Sales Tax Holiday/Tax-Free Weekend
August 5-7, 2016

Legislation enacted by the 2015 General Assembly combined Virginia’s three sales tax holidays into one three-day holiday beginning the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ending the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. This year’s sales tax holiday is August 5-7.

During the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.

Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on Aug. 5 - 7 — the state’s annual tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

Subject to the criteria explained below, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

I have a NH 630 that i finally got ready to go. Today was just checking it out and noticed that when the control box is plugged in and turned on the twine arm will not move when you use the extend retract button. should this move with out a bale in the chamber? Also noticed that if i push the full bale switch on the baler the control box will not alarm or light up .

Cattle chute questions

I think its time I get some sort of chute. Currently I have nothing. The issue is they aren't common around here at all. We've got 15 brood cows plus calves yearlings etc, usually around 30 total. I'm looking for something I can catch calves  for castration and hold the cows if I have a vet need. My cows are pretty darn good size.

I stopped by a Runnings store last weekend. Really cool store first one in New England. Anyway they have 4 options. Powder River "value" chute" and deluxe one. A Peirfert Chute that was really pricey. And this Powder river squeezeable alley with a headgate at the end. Any recommendations on these? Or do any of you have a chute you are looking to sell? I've been trying to stumble on a used one for years with no luck.

Seeding in 2 directions

We have a Massey Ferguson 33 seed drill that I think is older than even my father:-)  It has been used forever but still works adequately so no hope convincing my dad to replace it with a Brillion.  This year we had a new meadow of alfalfa and timothy and you could see the rows where the seeds fell, and nothing in between.  This being a dry year a lot of dust was kicked up while making the hay so I had to sell it for cattle.

 

Rather than use the seeder like my father / grandfather / great grandfather where they carefully pass over the land with a roller trailing behind, I would like to sow in one direction without the roller attached, then seed in a perpendicular direction with it attached.  I would seed at half the rate because I am going over the ground twice, but I am wondering if this would give me better ground coverage (faster formation of sod), and therefore less dust if we get a dry year again?  

 

My father never heard of anybody doing this in our area.

After baling second cutting in June I noticed some alfalfa crowns didn't regrow and died. I figured it was from drought as the whole field didn't regrow for two weeks after cutting until it rained. Now after third cutting which was baled about 10 days ago I have noticed many of the alfalfa crowns look very drought stressed and the regrowth is minimal. The thing is we have not been overly dry since cutting and many of the plants look healthy with 6-8 inches of regrowth.

I tried to pull up some of the poor looking alfalfa plant and to my surprise they came out of the ground very easy and the taproot was mostly all dead and looked like something had eaten much of it. I also found a couple plants that the taproot had a white grub eating the center out of the root. Anyone know what this pest might be and how to control it? I'm afraid the damage is already done and many parts of the field is going to be thin but I don't want this pest to continue feeding on the healthy crowns.
