Do's and don't of bale bandit owners

I will be baling with a model 100 bandit next spring for the first time. For those of you that own a model 100. What are the do's and don'ts when operating a bandit?

Drag type accumulators

Starting to think about ways to reduce the effort getting my small squares(lucerne/alfalfa) out of the field. I'm only a small operation so the simple drag type accumulator/grapple systems look attractive budget wise.

 

But my un-educated thinking is that dragging bales around the field can't be good for the plants (crown/new shoot damage) and must mess up the bottom of the bales? Anyone run this type of accumulator and tell me if this is an issue?

Discbine Damage

Out and about looking at a few discbines and while I'm used to seeing rubber chunks missing from both JD and NH machines, I can't say I've ever seen a broken flail/impeller - until this weekend. Looked at a couple of New Holland flail discbines and both had a few broken flails. Also saw a few new New Holland discbines with steel rollers.

I read steel rollers are durable, more so than rubber, but what happens to the steel rollers when whatever rock or piece of wood goes through them - like apparently happened on those flail discbines with broken flails? Bent rollers or worse?

BTW the NH and Deere flails appear to me to be cast. I should think cast = brittle. Krone's flail machine uses steel impellers which maybe wouldn't be so brittle? Anybody replacing the flails/impellers on a NH or JD mower conditioner on a regular basis? Expensive?

Just curious.

I was told Compton grass was a good forage grass and high in protein but I can't find any information about it. Not sure if the name is correct. If it is, would it be a viable option for us here in West Central Georgia? Good you tell me more about it or lead me where to find more information. By the way, just found this site and it seems to be just what we need.

Krone 900 rotary rake- what's it worth?

Coming up on auction, along with a couple Vermeer R23A. This only rakes 2 windrows together correct? If the price is right, I may add this to the lineup, but am absolutely sold on the double basket Vermeer. Thoughts?
