Clover/Alfalfa/Timothy Mix

Hello members, I am fairly new to planting and managing quality hay fields/pastures.  We recently acquired 45 acres right behind our house, and this is actually the first attempt at planting a quality hay mix.  I am on a limited budget for a few years, I had been selling about 5 fat cattle/year, and maybe 150 4x5 rounds of fescue/weed mixes.  Does anyone have input about a good ratio of red clover/alfalfa/timothy?  I had purchased 100lbs of clover, 50lbs of the timothy and alfalfa.  I will be planting some of it to corn as well, to produce enough feed for my growing herd which is necessary to make my land payments.

Isn't it supposed to go in circles?

Sitting behind the cab of my Case 8840 is a fan (see picture) that I assume is supposed to direct air into the space in front of the radiator and until yesterday, I had assumed was merrily spinning around in circles. Given its location, it is not something I tend to observe carefully while operating the beast, so I was surprised when my wife asked me yesterday "isn't that supposed to spin". 

 

So, given that it is (or at least was) supposed to spin, I opened the beast up and tired to locate something that would provide the motive power to cause the fan to spin. While turning the fan, I did find a few spots where it seemed to rub on something, but nothing that prevented it from spinning when given a modest push with my hand but did not see anything that would drive it (obviously, I'm missing something)

 

Since I've not noticed any abnormal temperature readings during the last four years of operations I'm wondering if the fact that whether or not this thing spins is all that important. Then again, I like to have my equipment running properly so this is going to nag at me until verified one way or another so...

 

How is it supposed to work?

How do I test it properly?

If it is not working, how do I start to restore it to proper working order?

 

For a piece of machinery that has been easy to maintain (clean it, lube it, check the fluids & air pressures and you're good to go) and to fix (everything is accessible and rock simple) this has me stumped.It should be obvious, but I'm not seeing it.

Does anyone with a Kuhn GMD 700 GII HD Disc Mower know what size allen wrench fits the cutterbar oil level fill/check plug?  I have bought a couple sets of wrenches and not one fits yet.

Questions about JD MoCo

I just bought a 525 (baby MoCo). Do the blades go with sharpened side up like most cutters? I swear i just a watched on utube  "MoCo cutter bar video" and at about 2:15-2:19 min. into the video the blades like the sharpened edge is pointed down.

Also the right lift lock on back by the tires that swings over the hydraulic lift cylinder rod. It gets grass or other foreign matter at the bottom where it hinges. It is almost impossible to swing it up to where you can lock the cylinder. Are they any fixes for this?

...and I'd rather be lucky than good sometimes.

 

I was close to finishing up baling the other day, working near the edge of the field and the baler started squealing and the slip clutch was slipping.  I had picked up a tree branch in the windrow and ran it into the baler.  The branch was about 6' long and 3" in diameter--looked like elm.  The branch had run straight into the stuffer fingers and stalled out the arm.

 

The lucky part was that there was a fork in the branch that wedged onto the windguard.  Bent the be-dickens out of the windguard but, after about an hours work, a good sawzall, a little chain and a come-along and a two foot piece of angle iron, I was able to finish baling.

 

Lucky part was that fork in branch.  Had it not hung up on the windguard, I can't imagine what would have happened if it had gotten inside the bale chamber.

JD 535 twine not alligned with cutter bar.

See the picture below, the twine is offset from the cutter and not cutting. You can barely see it in the picture but there's a 1" extension on the twine arm. The twine arm and the extension are both listed in the parts catalog with separate part numbers., JD calls the extension a bushing. Should I cut it off? Not only is the twine not cutting but the twine is not always grabbing the edge of the bales, sometimes it hangs off the side.
