Eastern US guys how often do you fertlize your alfalfa?

I live in Eastern TN, my soil make up is a mixture of red clay, sand, and loam. Soil ph last year was 6.8. Everyone around me fertilizes after the first cutting. The more articles I have read has got me to thinking I should split my fertilize and apply after the first and third cutting. What do you do?
