AC25 Massey Accumulator

lundi 30 décembre 2019

Looking to pick up a trio of accumulators for our three 2190 4X4 balers. Have found a pair of AC25 accumulators for a great price - one from a 2170 and one from a 2270 (both 3X4's). The one from the 2170 should be plug and play, correct?

What about the one from the 2270? Will it all hook up? I have seen them advertised as coming with a "2100" or "2200" attachment kit. What's the difference? Wiring harness? Is there a kit to convert from the 2200 to a 2100 baler? What's involved in the process?

Opinions for new x1140 overheating issues

I have a thread running about my new 10 hr x1140 back in the shop for a second time for overheating. i raked the dealer pretty good this morning when I took it back in. Stated that I now have a machine that I probably cannot sell because of two warranty claims for overheating. Asked for a price that they would give me for it. If I were them I would refund the full price because bad publicity will cost them far more, and I will publicize this. I have a L2800 and sold my 400 to buy this x1140 that have been flawless.

I would like opinions as far as your thoughts on any possible damage to the motor, whether you would keep or sell after the problem is fixed, resale value with two warranty issues pertaining to the cooling system, whether an extended warranty on engine would help to ease concerns of longevity, etc.

Prowl on foxtail?

 Good Morning

I am looking for some insite and or help with foxtail control on my alf/orchard fields. The last couple of years the foxtail has become a problem in late July/Aug time frame. We have sprayed the last two years at the last week of April first week of May, 3 pints/acre. in June 2018, we had 12" of rain. May 2019, we had 10". After the monsoons, it was followed by a flash drought, 1 1/2 " the next 2 months both years. Seems the weeds love it but not so much the hay. I understand after that much rain, most of the prowl would be gone.

Do any of you do a split application of prowl? Or should I just do my regular 3pt early and come back again if we think it has been washed away?

 Thanks  :)

Rtv500 Stuck in Neutral

Hi All, I’ve got an RTV500 that is stuck in N. I cannot move the shifter into R or D. 4wd and lock shifters work fine. It was really hard to get into gear last time I used it but now it is “stuck” in N. No grinding. It has about 80 hrs and is used fairly lightly. Any thoughts?

Getting started on alfalfa

samedi 28 décembre 2019

So I’m new to hay farming and was wondering what is the best way to get a field full of Knapp weed and mustards out so they won’t affect my alfalfa later on. I don’t want to disk the seeds in the ground and have them pop out later. I was thinking spraying couple times with roundup then disking and everything else. What do y’all think about that? Also what ratio of oats to alfalfa seed do you guys use?

The alfalfa orchard grass mix is a high value crop and I have and others have seen crab grass , barn yard grass and fox tail move in last summer and I think winter annuals are moving in as we speak . Inline baler help

jeudi 26 décembre 2019

Picked up a 2006 New Idea 7210 baler recently. I’ve been going though the baler part by part to do a full inspection and rebuild. The goal is to have everything back within factory spec before putting in the field come spring.

The baler has somewhere around 100k bales on it based on wear in the string guides by the needles. Prior owner has put some parts in the baler. Newer bill hooks and gears, new plunger safety stop rod, and possibly stuffer fork bushings as there is only enough movement in the forks to be able to tell it’s moving (less than an 1/8”).

I’m at the point I’m verifying timing. Book spec for stuffer to plunger is 1/4” minimum. With the plunger and grease fitting aligned as it should be (I didn’t have to move anything), then roll the plunger up till the forks are closest, this one measures 3”. No way that can be right. Looking at the motion of the stuffer, it can’t get any closer to the plunger. The forks are flat/parallel to the bottom of the plunger and at the pinnacle of its upward travel/arch with the 3” gap. It would literally be impossible for the plunger to ever hit the stuffer the way this is.

I’ve moved the timing a few links both directions to verify, the gap never changes. Another odd thing in the stuffer... the forks have at some point contacted the main frame on the front of the baler. Like the frontward travel was to much (reaching to far towards the pickup teeth). And, if the pick up is raised, the fork will contact the end of the rods on the wind guard.

Checked the needle timing and it’s way off to. Should be 1-1/2 to 2-1/4” from needle tip to plunger knife mount. This one is 5”. I haven’t adjusted that yet as I really want to get the plunger stuff figured out first.

I was told the baler was baling the day the dealer traded for it. But after getting into this thing, I doubt it was baling very well.

Any help is appreciated. Forgive the new guys long first post.

Rotary rake choice dilema

mercredi 25 décembre 2019

I want to upgrade to a bigger (single rotor) rake, to speed up my raking.  Right now I have a smaller rotary 9-ish ft and want to step up to a 13.5 or 13.9 ft.  I make around 80 acres of mostly grass/alfalfa mix hay per year and it is a one man show.  I also have a day job.

I am looking at new (AGCO (Massey/Hesston) and New Holland (ProRotor) and lightly used New Holland (ProRotor) and Kuhn (GA 4221), with the Kuhn being at the top end (actually a little beyond) of my budget.  I know that the Kuhn is probably the best rake, out of all of my choices.  But, are the others really that inferior?

The "new", AGCO or NH are substantially less money, than the lightly used Kuhn. And "new" is new and theoretically (depending on actual dealer support) a warranty (insert dealer horror story here).  And of course, the lightly used rakes had absolutely the best of care, were always greased before and after each use and only ever raked a few acres on Sundays, by a little old lady, between the AM and PM services.

I'm really torn here, my gut says buy the best, that I can afford, the Kuhn.  But my Dutch heritage says a brand new, name brand rake, for a couple of grand less makes the most sense financially.  I also want to "pull the trigger" before the end of the year.

Oh, also, I have bar rake and have used wheel rakes and they do not compare.  In this area, rotary's are the way to go, in my opinion.

Thanks,

Kurt

Kuhns tie grabber

New to hay talk. I ran a kuhns AE 15 off my NH bc5070 this summer. Nice setup and makes a good bale of hay. I had my kuhns 615 tie grabber running off a rented kubota ssv 75. Great visibility to see the grabber do what it needs to do. This is an 8400lb machine and still I felt the grabber with 15 bales of hay was way too light to handle it when I got the bales in the air. Anyone use or recommend a track machine with success or is adding weight to a wheeled skid steer the best route? Transitioning from kicker bales and have put up 20-25,000 yearly for 18 years.

Bandit keep up with 2 balers?

Looking to purchase a GFC Bale Band-it 100 after next season, and wondering if it will keep up with 2 inline balers decently. I've been running a 8520 Case and just picked up a 4600 Hesston. Don't need it to keep up perfect, just enough so I don't fall behind and not get them picked up same day, provided no break downs. Planning to run bandit on a tractor with 25gpm flow and 29000 psi.

How many years between oil filter changes

mardi 24 décembre 2019

I am having trouble finding any firm source on this, and wanted to see if anyone has scientific or researched information on the subject (not opinion). The question boils down to the manual stating 200 hours on a HST Filter before replacement, but nothing on years. Currently we are averaging 50 hours a year on a Kubota X900 so the filter has 2 more years left on it at this rate. Thinking that they might not be designed for soaking in oil this long but you never know. May call a manufacturer next year if I can't find documented evidence.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and happy new year to all.

Kuhn Trailed Mower

lundi 23 décembre 2019

I’ve been using a Kuhn GMD 310 mounted in a KMC caddy. For the most part I like the setup but the cutter seems to bounce a lot when raised and I worry about breaking the cutter bar down the road. The caddy can also get light on the far side since I don’t have a counterweight. Really like the look of the trailer mowers and think can make better time with them. Is it worth making the change?

Small Bale Accumulater, Bale wagon, or thrower

dimanche 22 décembre 2019

Long time reader, First time posting.

As it has been stated in many other posts I needed to start processing my own hay. I bought a 10 acre farm three years ago. The pasture was overgrown and needed total rehab. After 2 years of mineral applications, this past year I couldn't keep up with the mowing.

I decided to let it grow and get someone to bale it for me. This area has many retired farmers with little or no equipment. With no luck, on the forth of July I bushhogged 24 inch tall prime pasture grass. We brought the one horse we own up after that but obviously he cannot keep up with well fertilized grass.

One of the retired guys offered his help to procure my own equipment. He also offered the hay off of 15 acres that borders my property. (Saves him from mowing it. Win,win) I have obtained a NH 942 mower and 316 baler with no thrower. Now I'm trying to decide on buying a thrower or a 1010 bale wagon.

My only storage is in the loft using an elevator. The thrower can fill trailers while baling and can be covered if I can't get it in before the rain but requires a few people to unload them. As everyone has said help is at a premium. My thoughts with the 1010 is to single bale unload directly into the elevator. I only have smaller tractors and my larger one will be connected to the baler. My wife can run the wagon and I can stack in the loft. As long as rain isn't pressing this sounds like a good idea.

Not having used a single bale unloader, I could use some advice. I know what I'm dealing with using the thrower, is the Bale wagon a good fit for this application? Does it work well? Most disadvantages on this model is the lack of push offs but I won't be stacking the hay

The Accumulater/grapple doesn't seem to fit my use since I'm not making enough to over fill the loft.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kuhn GA7302DL

samedi 21 décembre 2019

I’ve seen some old posts on this particular rake, but didn’t really see a lot. To the people that have/run them. What’s your opinion on them? I’m looking at one and deciding if I want to pull the trigger on it. I don’t want a wheel rake, but have considered a bar rake. Bar rakes are nice, but not overly sold on them. Will this rotary pull 2 swaths from a 16’ conditioner easily? And some other pros and cons about them

It's that time again. It's hard to believe that time has passed so quickly .
Many years ago as a child one summer, we went on vacation and I found myself drowning on the bottom of the pool there. Everything got really bright.. but then, the next thing I knew, my bigger cousin Sue was shaking me by my ankles and the water was pouring out my nose and mouth. I had never wanted to think about it much but realize what about happened.
I 'm very grateful to the Lord for all things and letting me understand and see what is really important. Thank You Lord, my Savior, for coming to earth to be born and for being the greatest gift of all. A priceless gift for all to accept if they choose to .

I'm wondering if the vibration and performance issues could be realated to fuel pump adjustments suggested by sfsspecialties in the install manual.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

B&D Crusher

mercredi 18 décembre 2019

Hello, new to the forum, I am going to be re conditioning my swathers this off season, we run New Holland Rotarys, all have rubber chevron rollers, they usually dry the hay down to were we are raking in 3 to 5 days depending on time of year, are the B&D rollers better? And if so why, I understand the full contact rolls can make the hay softer which has my interest, do they have replaceable stub shafts? Is there any other reason they are better?

Oil From Air Filter

I haven't looked into this yet but noticed a bit of oil coming out of the breather of our X1120D the other day. The oil level is good and it is running quite well.

I need to take the breather off and check the air filters to see where its coming from. But I wondered if this is normal or expected. It was about 30 degrees and I did let it warm up to two bars before I took off.

Any ideas?

Teff in Tennessee

dimanche 15 décembre 2019

I am looking for yalls opinions on Teff, I’ve heard a little about it, had some customers ask about it, but nobody that I talk to here local has tried it. All of my hay is orchard grass, Timothy mix which here in Tennessee it ain’t much of a mix after first cutting, I have finally found one variety of Timothy that I got 3 cutting out of last year, looked like it wasn’t gonna make it through the fall drought but perked up and looks like it could be pretty promising in the spring, anyway I’m mainly a tobacco man, so I’ll plant a field of whatever kinda hay I want keep it there 4 years or so then have tobacco there, then back to hay, so this year after the tobacco was outta the field I went in and drilled a variety of Timothy called zynetta, supposed to be a heavy hitter but kinda a one and done, but I’m interested in coming in right after I get the Timothy off and drilling Teff, my understanding is ittl still perform in the summer heat. Wondering about quality, is it easy to sell, does it yield fairly good in the south? Thanks

Mf 124 dramas

Hi all. Does anyone know why after making 150 bales without a problem and then the plunger stop starts popping up and I start breaking shear bolts on the flywheel. I didn’t know what it was until I decided to stop it from contacting the plunger with some rope and then another 100 bales later I noticed a small tapered plate in the knotter clutch held in by a bolt had sheared off so I drilled and retapped the thread and put the small inch by inch plate back in and started the baler and then snapped the knotter drive chain and bent a needle. Once I get a new chain and fix the needle is there a video for dummy’s to re time the baler. And why would the plunger stop just start popping up and hitting the plunger. Cheers I hope someone can make sense of what I did wrong.

Hesston 5580 rounder

samedi 14 décembre 2019

Hello I have a Hesston 5580 round baler. I made about 250 bales with it last year and it worked great. However I could not make a full size bale because the belts have been repaired so many times by the previous owner that they are all too short, and making the be too big breaks the belts. This would not be an issue for me normally but I have been asked to do some custom haying and if I accept the job I would be making roughly 1000 bales and need to make a full size bale. So while I was looking at belts I found out that the 5585 is basically the same baler but it has shorter belts which helps with bale starting and makes a tighter bale? So my question is will belts for a 5585 work on a 5580 and basically make it like a 5585 in that aspect? Also came across an auto tie module for the monitor. Any one have experience with it and is it woth it? I know it may be alot off money to put into an old baler but i cant afford to upgrade at the moment as im only 19 and am just getting started. If i can use this baler for a few years then i could upgrade. Thanks everyone and sorry for the chapter book I just wrote here lol!

MF 124 problems

Does an mf 124 need retiming after it snaps a shear bolt on the flywheel because mine broke 2 before i relised the plunger was hitting on a hay dog or stop on the bottom of the chamber. Is there a video of how to re time a massey 124 for dummies. Cheers

Stub guard kits

My NH488 is just too nice of a machine and mows too nice for me to justify going to a discbine with all the more acres I cut. It's basically in almost-new condition. Right now it has standard guards that are in perfect adjustment, and a new knife. It doesn't plug up too bad in first cutting but in finer, shorter second and third cut it plugs up more. I am first wondering if underserrated knives would help this instead of overserrated.

Second, I have read enough about stub guards that look like they'd make it a better mowing experience. I also hate leaving the mow-hawks in the field from not being able to mow over material already cut.

I can't find any kits for a conversion to stub guards for a 488 9' machine, short of going to Messick's and ordering everything individually, and Webb's doesn't have anything. I'd also like adjustable hold-downs.

I know this is obsolete tech to most of you, but is anybody aware of something like this anywhere?

CVT Shaft Came out of Front Wheel

Had a disaster with my fairly new RTV x1100c. I was snow plowing and lost 4 wheel drive. The CVT shaft for the right front wheel came out of the wheel hub and was flopping around free. We tried to stuff it back in, but found a broken bearing race and some loose bearings. I am going to take it into a Kubota dealer to hopefully get it fixed, but just curious if this has happened to anyone else. The RTV has only 75 hours on it, so I am very disappointed in the product. I mostly use it for snow plowing, which is not the easiest thing on the vehicle, but still...

New x1140 Radiator fan short cycling

dimanche 8 décembre 2019

I have a new x1140 3 hours and the fan is short cycling. It's on for maybe a second or two then off for half a second then back on for a second or two and on and on. It has sounded alarm one time and I turned the engine off then back on with the engine not running and the fan ran and cooled to two bars in a few seconds then I started the engine and ran for a couple of miles with no problems. For the next two times out all went well except for the short cycling. Today it went up to halfway on the gauge then fan came on and two seconds later it was down to two bars. Outside temps were 55-70 degrees every time. It's seems to be an intermittent problem so I'll have to wait until it repeats then take a picture and take it in for warranty work.

What is the proper cycle for these fans.

Kubota L4710 shuts down when stressed

When I use my L4701 tractor, it runs fine for awhile, then when straining, it just shuts down. Not overheating, gauge says it is fine. Also, I have been unable to get DPF to regenerate. I am wondering if the DPF is causing it to shut down under heavy load? Any ideas?

Loading a steer with a broken leg

Does anyone have experience with loading a steer with a broken rear leg?  I have a 700 lb steer that broke its rear leg around the knee area several months ago.  It is crooked and the steer cannot put weight on it.  I plan on having it butchered but have to get him there.  Thanks.

JD Equal Angle Hitch

vendredi 6 décembre 2019

My 530 baler that I purchased did not come with an equal angle hitch. If I can't find one I can probably make an extension to my drawbar. What is the measurement that the EA hitch extended the drawbar?

I just got my manual for my 530 baler and noticed on my Baler that I do not have a compressor rack. Can I get by without one?

FORAGE SEEDf

mercredi 4 décembre 2019

I'm new to this forum, I was hoping someone out there could tell me what is the best forage seed that will grow and not die out in the summer heat. We live about an hour north west of San Antonio, Texas. The ground is dry and some what sandy. I haven't had much luck on the internet, of course everyone's seed is the best. Then you read the reviews and find out differently. I'm planting Rye grass now but in the spring i need something that will flourish through the Texas heat as well

Easy speedometer

dimanche 1 décembre 2019

I'm wanting to do some spraying with a hydrostatic lawn tractor, or Kubota just bigger than lawn tractor size, also with a hydrostatic transmission. With a manual transmission tractor it's easy enough to figure out ground speed in a given gear at a specific rpm. Up hill or down, keep the rpm stable and ground speed is the same. A hydrostatic transmission complicates matters in regards to maintaining a given speed, no tachometer and a hydo transmission and I'm lost. I'm looking for something that is hopefully cheap and easy to give me a fairly accurate ground speed. My cell phone isn't smart, the guy operating it isn't either, and with the very irregular shape and hilly fields I have I don't think an IQ upgrade to the phone would be beneficial. Any ideas?

Annual ryegrass in established orchard/fescue field

Hello,

I have a few acres of 2nd year orchard/fescue field. We baled it this year and it is a good, clean field (we use no chemicals on it). There are spots in it, however, that are still bare and it could be denser for sure. We had no rain this summer and then it all came in a few large rain events that prevented me from overseeding the field to get the stand even stronger and denser. Since annual ryegrass can be seeded now still, are there any negatives to overseeding the field with it and getting a mixed grass hay out of it (orchard/fescue/ryegrass)? I am in the Piedmont of Virginia if that matters and this hay is intended for horses.

Thanks!

What is the best equipment to remove thatch

I just leased some coastal fields that have been grazed for the last ten years. Fields have a few small mesquites which a chain saw and an ax will take care of. About 2 plus inches of heavy thatch is almost present on 70 plus acres. Short of a controlled burn to remove it I am wondering how to tackle this problem. I have never had this problem and have no idea. It also has heavy weeds in the low spots above the terraces in about half the fields. I should be able to brush hog the weeds and spray this spring. I intend to rip it all apply liquid fertilizer and preemergent in the spring. Am I on the right track? Thanks in advance for any help.
