I have an old stand of orchard grass that is getting thin and really should be rotated to something else, but we no longer have animals to need corn, and there are no dairy farms in the area anymore to have a need for anything different. I’m wondering if I leave the field alone this year if it would ‘“re-seed” itself to some degree and be stronger next year? Probably either bush hog it late in the year, or bale the hay late in the year as mulch hay. Anyone have any experience with doin something like that? It really needs to be plowed up and start over, but it’s just not cost effective to do that. I’m square baling the hay for horses.
‘Resting’ a field for a year?
