just bought 120 acres near fall river mills ca. its at about 3000 ft. Went up this weekend test digging soils. one end of the property has about 2' top soil on hard pan the other end 7'+. its a dark clayey loam with little organics, relatively flat and I will have to irrigate. this ranch has never seen tillage, being seasonal cattle grazing. nearby is really nice orchard grass and fields of alfalfa. I'm afraid of the soils propensity to hold moisture. are there legumes and grasses that are more tolerant of shallow soils and or wet feet? have never farmed this high or with this much water, also have never farmed where it snows before. any help would be appreciated...
need sage advise
