New Holland follower roll - rebuild?

Has anyone ever tried to weld new cleats on their follower roll? I was trying to adjust my scraper (on my 644) today and had to give up. The surface of the follower is just too uneven after 15000 bales. I've been pretty easy on it for the 3000 that I've done with it but I don't think the prior owner did a lot of maintenance. I'd like to pull the roll anyway to weld the typical sledge groove so I'm thinking ahead to a winter rebuild on this.
