New holland 163 spread

I got me a 163 manual fold behind tedder at an auction last summer. It’s alright but something I really don’t like is it doesn’t really spread the hay out very well. It leaves a foot or so gap in between passes. I’ve tried to slow the rpm, speed it up, slow ground speed, speed up. Tried in fresh cut hay and I’ve let it dry a little. Tried thin and thick hay. Nothing really makes a difference. Any ideas here? Someone told me that’s normal but every tedder I’ve ever seen will spread it almost all the way over to the next pass so it’s all equal. Any advice is much appreciated just like always
