Here is a great article from PFG on windrow width.
But, like all articles, there just isn't enough space to cover all the conditions. I mowed some OG late Monday after almost two inches of rain over the previous weekend. The ground was soft, muddy in spots and standing water in one spot. But the forecast called for good weather through Thursday and this OG was past prime. (Not the best mowing conditions, but, to quote The Duke: "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.")
I made my windrows taller and narrow so that a) the exposed ground could dry and my tractor tires would not be stomping the cut hay into the soft ground. I then ran the tedder over it Tuesday.
I mowed some hay Tuesday and spread it as wide as I could. Ground was much drier; didn't worry about running over mowed hay. Tedded it Tuesday night.
