V rake

I have an older 8 wheel Heston v rake. It does a decent job on the rough ground and odd shaped fields but at times it balls/ bunches the hay into piles. I mostly do grass hay but have about 8 acres of alfalfa that I cut a few times.it will bunch all types of hay. I spoke to a guy at local feed store about it and he said that he offsets one side from the other. I did. It works to some degree. Rake has a kicker on it. Roll the hay with a 605 F Vermeer.
If this does work as perhaps in theory, should one side be offset as opposed to the other side?
