New Pequea TT4101 Tedder

Intuition caused me to have to make a trip to my NH dealer today.  Needed oil filter, cabin filter, hydraulic oil and wanted to get their year-end deal on net wrap.

Pulled into their parking lot and saw a 4 star tedder sitting over on the side.  Salesman was talking to another fellow about a manure wagon.  I was intrigue by the tedder and checked it out and liked the looks of it.  Salesman comes over and says he could make me a real good deal on it today because it was the last day of their fiscal year.  I liked the idea of the hydraulic wings and tilt.  The wings on my old tedder were starting to get heavy.

I picked up the parts, etc. then went in and asked how good of a deal -- he told me, I asked a few technical questions, thought  about it for a bit, then said "Let's do it."

I am a little concerned about the gear connection to the outer wings.  They use a "carbo-austempered finger drives" -- something I've never heard of, but Google says it's a method hardening steel.  So, I guess I'll see.

RTV 900 idle noise

jeudi 29 novembre 2018

After climbing a hill to my mail box, with the engine idling, there is an intermittent vibration sound from around the front of the engine.

Sounds rotational, like an alternator or water pump bearing. But I pulled the belt and spun both, there is no end play or pulley binding, the belt is snug without cracks.

Its most noticeable with the hood up, it goes away or is masked by engine noise when the rpms are increased.

The plastic panels around the seat are secure, the radiator fan is not running.

I am reluctant to leave as is until whatever breaks and leaves me stranded in the woods.

This RTV has no issues other than this noise.

Is it wise to run this without the belt (temporarily) to help isolate this?

Pasture water pipe protection

Live in northern Florida with winter temps occasionally hitting 28-32 degrees. Would like to know what folks up north do to protect your pipes from freezing? I have mine wrapped and duck taped this year with those pool noodle things which are thicker than the regular black wraps from Lowes. I do leave the pipes slowly draining but that is a pain in the butt plus sometimes water is not dripping fast enough and pvc pipes will freeze, even busting and having to repair them. I heard to close main valve and open faucets to drain water? I sometimes travel for my job so looking to make it easier for wife while I am gone. Thanks

Prices on used NH 7230 Discbines

I'm still in the search finding that discbine i can drag home before Christmas. I have one more to checkout this weekend. I did appraisals on couple different year models (2010, 2013) from ironsolutions.com. BTW, anyone use this site to evaluate equipment? To compare the appraisal to asking price is a huge difference, about 25%-30% difference. I tried to negotiate down to the appraisal price but dealer does more than scoffs. Is there a supply and demand thing going on where the dealers get what they want on discbines?

I spoke with a dealer yesterday concerning trade-in values and retail values on my tractor and haybine which he gave me  what I consider sound advice. We both came up with the same numbers. Maybe tractor prices and discbine prices are a world apart. I ended up buying the tractor well below asking price and market price.

Educate me on seed saving

Hello all, hope everyone has had a successful harvest and for those not done yet, hopefully everything works out for you guys in a timely manner. I know im probably not the first to ponder this, but ive been wondering why there are almost no farmers who save seed to plant the following year. I fully understand the issues of second generation hybrid offspring not carrying the desired traits of the parent generation, as well as the legal issues of saving seed with patented technology. Also I read that gmo second generation seeds can also lose desired traits. What I am wondering though is with margins as tight as they are, would it be cost effective to use seed that i guess would be considered an heirloom variety that would give consistent seed year after year? I understand the yeild would be lower, but I was wondering if anyone has crunched the numbers to see if it would be worth it due to the high costs of seed. I have to imagine that with the precise fertilizing and chemical management we have today that good yields would still be achievable? Please note that I do not grow corn or soybeans so I could be misinformed, just wondering out loud here. Interested to hear everyones take on this, hopefully I have posted this in the right section. Thanks

Baleage question

mercredi 28 novembre 2018

With my job, I'm lucky to have 3 days to make hay. I'm considering trying my hand at wet hay next year. How long do you guys normally leave it lay before baling? Some videos I've watched they are baling right behind the mower and wrapping in black and some videos they let the hay dry a bit.

Edible netwrap....maybe?

I am going to put this in the machinery section, but it could go into several categories. This is the first I've heard of it. Rather than copy the article I will post the address for you to cut and paste, if  interested. It was apparently invented in London, England. But, I am a twine man myself.

Not at all happy with the New Holland Roll Belt 560 net wrap system.

lundi 26 novembre 2018

Come on New Holland.  The system you had on the BRs was near perfect.  So by all means reinvent it so that it is over complicated and too touchy to handle the widely varying conditions we have here.  I’m glad I can now gift wrap bales just like John Deere.  I feel really good about that because with the BRs I was able to gift wrap only one bale in nearly 35,000 that we made.  Since we got the 560s Ive lost track how many have way too much wrap.  Just a lot of dumb ideas on these wrap systems.

Rant to be continued.  Cows to feed yet.

Double crop soybeans into old alfalfa stand?

Has anyone on here done this?

I have an old stand of alfalfa (5 years) that took a beating this year with all the rain.  Had water standing on it a couple times, normally this ground is drained pretty good but this year was different.  Anyway the stand is getting tired, and the foxtail moved in.  I need to try and take at least one cutting off of it next year.  But was thinking after first cutting that I could no till in soybeans and roundup kill the alfalfa?  Then next year tear it up and plant it back to alfalfa.

Usually around here what I have seen and done isl tear up the alfalfa field in the fall, plant corn in it next year.  Then take it back to alfalfa the year after.  But to try and get one cutting off I'd be too late for corn so I thought maybe putting beans in to try and get something off of it for the rest of the year might work, and might get me back to alfalfa quicker.

Overseed questions on established grass

Sorry for another "overseed" question.  I did a search and didn't find my answers.

I have an opportunity to rent a 65 acre field that is established with a mix of various grasses (brome, timothy, fescue) and a fair amount of clover.  Prior tenant said "not much clover in first cutting, but latter cuttings have 40-50% clover".

I'm not a fan of clover.  I was wondering if anyone has ever terminated the clover in a grass field (spray it with 2, 4D or Dicamba) and overseed with a grass to fill in.  Perhaps overseed early in the year, and spray to kill the established clover mid-summer?

Thanks

rebuilding a perkins 3.152

samedi 24 novembre 2018

hey all, new to forum and am re-building a perkins 3.152. I am having difficulties properly orienting the piston rings top up. I have a set of Vapormatic # VPB4000 rings that clearly say they are to be oriented up but upon inspection I cannot see a clear profile or angled edge or any stamping on any of the rings that indicate the top. Can't proceed without some kind of comfort level with this.....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

rtv x1100c bogs down

My rtv x1100c tends to bog down quite easily under full throttle. Is there an adjustment to have it bypass more easily so that the engine isn't put under overload so easily?

Just got an rtv x1100. 800hrs.

When the engine is loaded up it rolls coal like I've never seen an rtv do.

I adjusted valves (they were way out), changed air and fuel filters but still it smokes. Tried swapping in some different injectors. No difference.

Any other suggestions?

2009 NH 7230 - Too old?

Looking to upgrade from haybine to NH 7230 discbine. Found a one owner 2009 NH 7230 for $13,500. He does his own maintenance changing oil every other year, keeps it clean, fixes what needs fixed so he tells me. Planning on making a road trip, 1 1/2 hour travel time. I reviewed several HT threads and Mike10 maintenance notes concerning these machines for reliability. I would like to get 5 - 7 years of use out of the next cutter without being nickel and dime to death.
What is too old, longevity of these cutters? As always appreciate your opinions.

What net wrap?

I'm converting my JD 559 to net wrap with a kit I bought from the dealer.

I am planning on using the JD brand net wrap.

Time to order for next season as they are offering good prices if bought in November.

I don't know if I should use the "Edge to Edge" 64" wide net,

or the "Coveredge" 67" wide net

To me the Coveredge seems like the way to go, might make better looking more durable bales.

Dealer says order some of both to see which I like best, well I don't want to get stuck with one type I don't want to use.

What do you guys say?

RB 460 belt slipping

Ive got a RB460 silage special and have a 7070 also. I've noticed lately that the belts will start slipping and seem to be in a bind just before I dump the bale, and when I do dump the bale, the belts squeal rather loudly , seems the grass is building up at the front roller where the scraper knife is, i would understated short hay giving me a problem but this is not short, the 7070 never has this problem, Im afraid Im going to mess up the belts if i don t figure this out, thanks

2010 RTV900 Transmission Issues - won't move

mercredi 21 novembre 2018

Hi All,

Looking for some help or suggestions here. I have a 2010 Kubota RTV 900 G9 series purchased used (from golf course) with 1500 hrs. Just put a plow on it this fall and after the first use, there appears to be an issue with the transmission.

Problem:
Plowed a few passes and was working fine, backed up, then shifted forward and there was no power then on. I can shift through all the gears and all linkages appear to function correctly but it won't move forward or reverse. Of note, there is no resistance like there was previously when shifting through gears. ie I usually always have to use the hydro-static release to shift in addition to lots of brake pressure.

Observations / Checks:
  • All transmission linkages appear to function correctly
  • verified transmission oil level and added a little UDT. All appears ok.
  • Hydraulic pump for dump box works fine. I believe this implies that the driveshaft from the motor in the transmission is turning or at least the part that drives the dump hydraulic pump.
  • Interesting note, I ran the engine yesterday for about an hour in -5C temperature outside and the transmission oil did warm up to about approx 15-20C (warm to touch). This makes me think the pump part of the transmission is working assuming it generated heat from transmission fluid moving around.
  • spoke to dealer about some common issues and they mentioned the range gear shift forks can break inside the transmission - this does seem to align to my problem. Pic of parts page attached for reference.

My thoughts are the issue has to do with either the motor part of the transmission or gearbox inside.

Does anyone have any recommendations on further checks to diagnose the problem or have you ever changed the gear shift forks on this unit?

Thanks

Ag Leader SMS

Anyone else here using Ag Leader SMS for precision Ag? Looking at buying it to make prescription planting maps, VRT fertilizer, and soil sampling overlays. I’m just looking for anyone else who has used it with alfalfa in their crop rotation. I know yield is a little harder to determine with alfalfa, but my dealer is working on a solution for that.

Changing of the Guard

mardi 20 novembre 2018

Last week I decided that I was having too many problems with my 10 year old New Holland round balers, considering how much we have yet to bale this season. Called two local dealers for prices and bought 2 new New Holland Roll-Belt 560 Specialty Crop balers from one of them. They were delivered yesterday and we put them in service today. These are the old balers.FFB78AF4-5A80-469C-AB34-299222963FF5.jpeg 543D8CEE-374B-4A17-BBE1-9706303AAAF5.jpeg

I will try to get a picture of the new balers soon.  I will miss the BR series balers for the most part.  They make the nicest bales of any baler out there.  Unfortunately, I am making more bales in a fall than what a BR series baler can endure, unless it is in perfect shape going into the season.  I plan to sell the two balers pictured, but keep my oldest baler around as it is worthless on paper, but still very functional yet if I ever get it put back together, so that will be my old times fix I suppose.

UTV Hitchworks makes something called the Farmboy X Sport that is a three point hitch for the X1120D.

Does anyone have one of these or have you seen it used?

It would make maintaining the feed lots, trails and pawpaw patches a lot easier for my old back.

Talk me out of raising red clover

dimanche 18 novembre 2018

Every couple years I get the bug to try my hand at red clover for feed. Not sure why, just that some itches ya gotta scratch. I know feed value is actually better than alfalfa, just the fact it wouldn’t dry in a week in hell. Making cropping plans for 2019 and seeding some new fields of alfalfa is on the docket but I may have one low lying farm (if the family accepts the bid) that may be a good candidate for red clover. Talk me out of it or convince me my brain isn’t totally turned to mush yet.

New Holland 163 tedder

samedi 17 novembre 2018

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a local NH 163 4 star hydraulic tedder for sale with the digidrive.  It's a 2005, he bought it new, it's in really good shape, paint's still really good, and it's a vertical fold. It's been stored inside and he's asking only $3000 for it. Retiring from farming.

I understand these to be made by Kuhn and they're a cheaper version of the Kuhn model (that last part is only heresay, I don't know if it's actually true).

I'm just doing my due diligence and thought I'd ask the experts here...any comments, opinions, thoughts on this particular model?

all terrain forklift for stacking?

Has anyone ever used an all-terrain forklift for stacking bundles, like 15 pack grapples, or even 21 pack baron bundles?

I'm looking at solutions for getting more height in my stacks, and the best solution is a telehandler, but I don't have the cash for a decent, smaller sized one.  I was thinking about an older Deere or Case (Deere 480B), modify the mast to hook up skid-style attachments, with aux hydraulics, and a little more reach.  They lift about 20', which is what im looking for.

thanks.

Horse Customer Story

vendredi 16 novembre 2018

Hello all, got a bit of a story that i think you guys will get a kick out of, from what i read its something most of you have dealt with quite often over the years. A few weeks ago I got a text from some horse customers wanting to come look at timothy squares. She mentions that she wants absolutely no bottom bales no matter what. I explain that im almost sold out and many of the bales I have left were on the bottom, but were on pallets on a straw covered dirt floor so they will most likely be fine. She says ok and we set up a meeting time at the neighbors barn where it is stored. The couple shows up and seem like nice people, i take them in and show them the hay. She loves the hay, I give them the speech about how I use old equipment and so every now and then ill get a spot in the field that doesnt get tedded well, which may lead to a small dusty spot in the bale. I tell all my customers if the get a bad bale ill buy it back. Everything checks out for them but they didnt bring their trailer so they have to go home and get it, no big deal. We had just got two inches of rain a few days before and so my neighbors yard was soft, I made it very clear that i wanted him to take it slow and easy to avoid ruts. Hes backing it up and starts to sink in, then proceeds to floor it to make it through which obviously digs him im deeper. He thought he was in four wheel drive but didnt fully engage it, puts it in 4WD and proceeds to walk right through the now huge rut he made. We get it to the barn and start loading. The wife is incredibly picky about which bales she takes and is incredibly wishy washy about each bale. Every bale that feels heavy she panicks that it may be moldy. I take a bale she thought was heavy and break it open, we all inspect it and I personally thought it was some of the best hay ive ever made. They pay for the opened bale as well and throw it in the pickup bed. Theyre satisfied and i tell them to call if theres any problem. Very next day i get a call, the husband tells me the ENTIRE bale we opened up at the barn is moldy and must have been baled wet. I was almost speechless as we had just inspected the bale with a fine tooth comb and it looked perfect. He starts rambling on the phone about how hes worried to open any more because he doesnt want to be stuck with moldy bales that he will have to burn. I have him open another and he insists it feels wet but isnt moldy. I head over to there place 10 min later with the one ton ready to haul it all home, wondering how the hell i coulve missed seeing any issues. I get there and look at the bale, there is one thick-stemmed weed where the higher moisture stem caused a handful to clump, didnt have even the slightest off smell or mold color to it. Inspect his “wet” bale, its bone dry, just cold. I actually found it too comical to even be irritated, I never thought I would experience the legendary antics of the horsy customer. I understand the worry about feeding a horse moldy hay, but this was overboard. Plus I had to spend an hour fixing ruts in his yard. The neighbor didnt want any cash rent to use his barn, but after that fiasco I gave him 100 bucks, figuring it was probably still nowhere near what I should really give him but better than nothing. Debating saving their phone numbers under “do not sell too”. Sorry for such a long story, I still didnt cover some pf the funny details. Some people man...

Disc mower cut

I have a NH h6830 trailer disc mower and I have always had a little issue with build up of mudd on the cutter bar. Well now i am trying to mow a field that has 1.5 foot tall ant hills and its kind of wet still. I have raised my spring tension so my head takes 75lbs of force to lift it. What else can i do? Its a rough as hell field with heavy clay soil. Can i lower the amount of force it takes to lift the head?
Do deere disc mowers not plug with mid as bad? Neighbor cut some of a neighboring field that has about the same conditions and his cut way better.

NH 275 knotter question

Hey guys. Brand new to the forum but have used it so many times in research.
I recently bought a new holland 275 baler over here in Australia. Very seized, very messy, very good to learn the ropes on.
My first (of many) questions is to do with the twine finger area. My needles touch the knotter frame as specified but there is a way bigger gap than the required 1/8” between the needle and twine disc. How do I lessen the gap?
Also, I can’t get the twine finger forward enough to get a 1/32” gap between the finger and needle. It seems to foul on the slide bolt “a” if I try and go forward enough.
Any help is much appreciated as I’m new to balers of any kind.

Question about round baler lifespan

jeudi 15 novembre 2018

Thinking about how long a round baler can be expected to last before its “wore out”, am I wrong in thinking that all else being equal, a baler that has made more bales per hour over its operating life will have more bales on it before its wore out?  My view is that since a round baler is constantly turning the crop in the chamber, there is wear in the chamber and to the driveline all the time it is running.  In other words, round baler wear is as much a time factor as it is a bale count factor.  I wouldn’t expect that a baler that averaged one bale per minute is going to last twice as long as one that made a bale every two minutes, but there has to some benefit in more bales per hour?

Frozen parking brake handle

Our RTV X-1120 was outside during heavy rain several days ago. Yesterday the temperature was in the low '20s. When I went to use the RTV the button on the parking brake handle didn't want to push in to release the parking brake, but with some jiggling it finally went in. Then when I tried to set the parking brake to park the button was stuck in and the pawl wasn't making contact with the sector teeth so the parking brake would not stay set. I found a place to park where the RTV couldn't roll. This morning after sitting in the sun for several hours the parking brake was working and there was some water around the button.

Push snow first time with Gator 835M

Had about 6 inches of snow last night and this morning. First time I used the Gator to push snow. Little different from using the boss vplow on my old Kubota X900. Need to get use to using the winch to raise and lower the blade. But besides that it worked great. With the Kubota having some shifting problems, no issues like that with the Gator. Haven't installed the actuator on the blade yet so I had to dismount to move the blade from left to right. Will take off the blade this weekend, weather will be in the 40-50 range next week. But glad I was able to give the blade a snow test run.

Shot Out

Welp, it's that time of year again.

Gunshots across the creek to the North, and behind the house along another creek bed.

Elmer Fudd, and his buddies, are at it again.  Stinkin' deer season.

I don't hunt, don't like the meat.  Beef..........or nothing.  Pork, and chicken, only on point of starvation.  Fish belong in the ocean.

Fences are only a slight inconvenience to these folks.  Private property is a shadowy concept buried somewhere in their pin head mini brains.

So...........back to the yearly routine...........

Bag of boollits (yeah, I keep my reloads in baggies, it's cheaper), and 44 mag by the back door.  Sound carries, and makes a pretty cool muzzle flash at sunrise.

Notifies the scum that you're out and about, and keeps the deer from traveling (Elmer can sit there all morning, and they ain't movin')

Some knucklehead at the gym suggested taking a 9 mil down there, and run them off (that's what he'd do  ).  Yeah...…...like I wanna get in a gun fight somewhere out by myself in the pasture .  That's really brilliant.

So goes another deer season.

New Holland 216 rake

Early winter weather gets the sitting around "winter farming" and the talk veered to hay rakes.  The question came up, probably because someone saw one at a sale, about how narrow the NH 216 will rake.  The specs give two 16' swaths/27' wide stretch but what is the minimum for thick hay?

old old vicon RC300 rake/tedder

mercredi 14 novembre 2018

I was at an auction a couple weeks ago and my hand accicently slipped out of my pocket and bought an old 3pt. Vicon RC 300 rake tedder. I need another tedder like I need the flu.

It is 3 point and seems to be in working order except for a few missing tines. It is  so easy to move to some of my little isolated hay fields, that it might be handy to use. or....It may just go to the junkers, but I can not find much on-line about it. Can't even find  a manual. But Vicon is a good brand and the little machine seems solid and might be of use if it does the job.

The PTO shaft is worth more than I paid for it .Have any of you ever used one? Do you have any suggestions, input or insights? Thanks

mardi 13 novembre 2018

Wondering if anyone runs any kind of accumulator with an old baler.  We only do around 20 acres a year grass and alfalfa.  But getting help around to run the racks (we do mostly small squares to sell) is getting harder since kids are all moved out.  Been looking at the accumagrapple style things to put on the loader or skid steer.  But wondering if my old NH Super 78 can make a consistent enough bale to work well with one?

I'm thinking I can make a more consistent bale if I control my speed based on the baler and not the help on the rack.  I do know I tend to make a better bale when I'm putting it on the ground....

But was wondering if anyone else runs an old baler with any kind of accumulator?

Shop built conditioning rolls

lundi 12 novembre 2018

Hey guys. I've got an older NH 1114 self propelled windrower and the old rubber rolls are showing some major wear with small pieces of rubber missing. Also feel that the drying time could be much improved with a better roll. I'm curious if anyone has made their own conditioning rolls out of steel stock and had success?

Same haybine different brand?

I have a CIH 1490 haybine that has a few parts that are worn out and in need of replacing. There is a spindle comming out of the wobble box that a bracket slides over and bolts to the cutter bar head. The splines on both the spindle and the bracket are pretty worn. I took the bracket in to a local dealer and he thinks for the amount of use I put on the machine, just having a new bracket with good splines will tighten things up good enough to last quite awhile for me. He is pretty knowledgable and I trust his judgement, he has always been pretty good to me. The replacement bracket is $300 new, I found an equipment dealer about an hour away that has a 1490 for $500 and a New Idea 5112 for $500 as well. Claims the are both runners, over the phone he didnt seem to know much about them however. My question is, are the 1490 and 5112 the same haybine just with different paint jobs? They look very similar from the pictures and online it seems as though there are parts for sale that claim to fit both machines. I have heard of equipment being made by the same company and just being rebranded, is this the case for these machines? That would be best case scenario for me, as I could go assess the part I need on both machines and pick the better of the two, and come home with a whole parts haybine as well. The hydraulic drive, guards, knives, belts, etc would all be useful to have, especially since the 1490 model is uncommon. Sorry for the lengthy post, any knowledge/ advice is appreciated.

Uncured hay that freezes....what will happen?

Hello everybody....hope all is well.

I have a coastal Bermuda patch that has enough grass present to justify baling it considering our local hay prices.

Our first freeze is forecast for this coming Wednesday (forecast to drop to 29 for a couple hours). If I cut tomorrow, there is no way that this grass will be cured before that freeze arrives. My question is what will happen to this hay if it freezes before its fully cured?

Thanks,
Chris

I was wondering if anybody knows what would work good through the grain box and not grass seed boxes.

I need to seed 25 lb of Cajun 2 Fescue and 6 to 8 LB of Colver pasture booster. I am thinking an 8 setting to start with.

JD Coveredge not covering

Gday,
It has probably been asked before but I have just started having trouble my coveredge netwrap not covering the edges on one side of the bale. It will do the LHS of the bale fully but the RHS it will only do a 1/3 of the way round, with the other 2/3 just being bunched up on the edge of the bale. Overall netwrap tension is fine.Havent had a problem for the last 2x years until now.
Baler is a JD 592.
Any ideas on what to look at first will be greatly appreciated.

Added Mud guards (fender kit) to 835M yesterday

Had to add the fender kit to the rear of the Gator, too much mud was throwing up on rear of cab. (Mud was from country road not a field)

Sloan Equipment brought them down to my place, 60 miles away. Can't beat that service.

New Holland H6830

I have a NH H6830 disc mower its a trailer mower. I was talking to a neighbor and he was telling me his JD 3 point disc cutter has some sort of wheels behind the cutter bar that puts the hay in a windrow so to speak. We have been wet this fall and having a conditioner is nice becuase you can put your hay in a tight windrow and not drive over the cut hay with you tractor tires on the next pass. To help from pressing the grass into the mud. He said , "i bet you could get somthing that throws your hay into windrows for that machine".
Anyone have any idea about that?

He also set his JD630 moco cutter bar spring tension to 75lbs for these wetter conditions we have been having. Should i set my NH springs so my bar floats more?

Winter brings daily stress.  Low humidity, and lots of fuel if it was a wet Spring, and Summer.  You remember what fire can do.

Other Livestock I'm Raising

Out here in the wilds of Adelaida (what was a post office store way back) we tend to raise some creatures other than the usual livestock. My son has a bunch of game cameras on the ranch.  The pictures were taken just a week apart. I guess we are lucky to have deer and a lot of wild pigs to keep this other livestock fed.

We don't need no steenkin' hay tests here at the compound  :P

I'm feeding crap this year.

Been pushing the cubes to offset the poor quality.

I got 3 cows that won't go in to cube.  They won't eat cubes off the ground.  They won't eat cubes at the fence line.  We've tried driving them into the pen, and they just hang back around the edge, and won't go to the bunks.  On the hay I'm feeding right now (that old half dead stuff off the meadow), they're puttin' this out.  poor hay1.JPG   poor hay2.JPG   Pretty dry, lot of undigested hay in there.

The cows that do cube are puttin' this out.  poor hay3.JPG   Good moisture, lands with a satisfying wet plop, and no undigested hay in there.

There's you hay test  :)

Good science, or bad science...…….you can take it to the bank if it comes from Uranus  :D

Updates coming on New Holland round balers?

I talked briefly to one of the local baler salesmen and he said New Holland is going to make some changes to the current line of round balers in 2019 and 2020.  Sounds like some things are geared toward making the 5x6 balers more suited for baleage.  The other item mentioned was that the declutch will become optional on the 5x6 balers, where historically it was standard.  I am kind of glad to hear that as the declutch is really not needed to prevent net scuffing if the baler is powered tractor that’s been made in the last 25 years or so, and the declutch will eventually be a source of $$$ problems.

Vertical vs horizontal fold tedders

lundi 5 novembre 2018

I'm planning on buying a 4 basket tedder for the upcoming season and weighing pros and cons of vertical vs horizontal fold. The biggest thing I hate about a tedder is how bad they follow when being towed. Even at 16 mph mine will sway back and forth. Do the horizontal tedders follow better and not bounce around as much?

Pro's and cons of either?

MF 220-4

Hello all. Brand spankin new to the forum. I have not even taken the time to really look at the previous topics so this may have already been a thread. If so , I apologize. I have an old MF 220-4. It was MF's foray into the Japanese tractor market. I am having trouble locating some parts and was hoping someone here could offer some help. I am looking for two king pin seals. The MF part # is 3 282 157 M1 I was also able to pull a number off one of the seals. It is AE 8288P These seals are whats holding me up on putting my tractor back together. The old tractor is a tank and she has taken everything I have put her through and this is the first problem I have had in 10 years of owning her. I really hope yall can point me in the right direction. Thank you

Installing blade on 835M

dimanche 4 novembre 2018

Installed the blade the other day. It only took about 5-10 minutes compared to the boss vplow which took me about 30-45 minutes. Boss plow was just overkill for me.

Think this one will work great for me.

This was just a trial run to see how long it would take, I will only put it on when needed, the boss vplow on the kubota stayed on all season.

504 Super I Pickup Teeth - Off Season Maintenance

I am planning some off season work on a 504 Super I. One thing is to replace all the pickup teeth to hopefully reduce the hay buildup on the outside of the belts. Is there a better tooth to use instead of the original units, from a  rebel or rancher for example? Any other suggestions to reduce the hay buildup?.The scrapers bars are adjusted as close as possible without rubbing.

The baler has the hydraulic density assist but I am pretty sure there is no pressure because I can crack a line and get no bleed. It is making a good bale however. I still plan to replace the gauge (not working) and charge the system. Does anyone know a "easy" way to add charge?

Boss V- Plow causing welding to snap X900 bumper

samedi 3 novembre 2018

At the end of last winter (my third with my X900 and Boss V-Plow) I heard a large snap and got out to find that one side of my bumper had broken. I am a conservative plower and I had not been doing anything unusual. When my machine got taken in for two recall notices I just mentioned the break (which I welded) and asked if this is something they had seen. Well, in fact is seems that this is a problem and Kubota and Boss have not been able to come up with a fix! I hope this is not the end! The plow is heavy, but I hope that something can be done. I doubt my weld will be a permanent fix.

Surplus of hay

So I am coming up on a surplus of hay and a neighboring property wants me to bale their property on shares for years to come. I have cattle that I have always sold calves at about the 6 month mark. I have been producing quality hay and very much so limiting buying feed. And by doing so i took a herd of 3-4 BCS heavy breed cows last year to 4-5 BCS mostly 5s by just way of grass and hay(it was also a very dry summer and all cows had caoves on them during drought).
So my tgought it with having a surplus of hay could someone keep bulls calves and cut them at 6 months and keeo back quality heifers and put them on pasture(limited) and feed alot of hay and put weight on them for 3-4 months with a stockpileof 12-14% protein hay? Or is it better to just sell them? I know i could give then free choice hay with feed but not sure that would work out money wise. Just looking for yalls thoughts. Would be from about 160 head of cows. Just looking for a way to make a little more from the herd and use up some hay. Also probably be best to just sell the hay???

Marietta Ohio family plows forward, breaks speed record with tractor

Marietta Ohio family plows forward, breaks speed record with tractor

http://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/...-with-tractor/

MARIETTA — A Marietta resident and his family and friends spent a year modifying a 1961 Allis Chalmers D-19 to go from pulling a plow to pushing the envelope.

But Dave Archer enjoys a challenge.

On June 2, the farm implement went through the one-mile marker on the runway of a former Air Force Base in Arkansas at 108.5 mph, establishing a new land-speed record for tractors.

The driver was Archer’s daughter, Kathy Schalitz. Driving modified farm machines is nothing new for the 37-year-old, but it’s the first time she’d driven a tractor built for speed rather than pulling power.

“I thought it would be really neat to see how fast a tractor could go down a race track,” Schalitz said Monday. “This doesn’t sound normal, but it’s normal for us.”

Photo provided by Wally Kandel The Archer family and friends spent more than a year modifying this 1961 Allis Chalmers D-19 to break the speed record for tractors June 2 in Blytheville, Ark.

The Archers are the architects and operating crew of international champion pulling tractors, including a five-engine, 15,000-horsepower monster, Black Widow, that won numerous tractor pulls across the country, driven by Schalitz. She’s been involved in the family sport since she was a teenager, and it’s taken her around the country and twice to Europe.

The speed project, which in many ways is the opposite of tractor pulling, began as an idea Archer, 73, hatched after a double lung transplant two years ago in the Cleveland Clinic. With a long recovery ahead, Archer said, he knew he needed something involving a goal to keep him focused and occupied.

“To me, it was therapy,” he said. “Last winter, I’d go out there at night and work on it. I had a lot of help, especially from my wife, Arlene. She’s built a lot of unusual tractors.”

The speed record at that time was 101 mph set in 2015 by former NASCAR driver Jack Donahue in a 1953 Ford tractor powered by a V-8 flathead.

The work on the Allis Chalmers included lowering the machine 2 feet and fitting it with Bonneville racing tires engineered for 300 mph, Archer said. The engine used was the original six-cylinder Buda tractor engine, although the engineers who designed it likely would have trouble recognizing it.

“It was fairly common in trucks and heavy road equipment back in the day,” Archer said. “But it was extensively modified to go up to 6,500 rpm, about double what’s normal. It’ll scream.”

The tractor body was altered somewhat, but rules don’t allow an enclosure for the driver except a metal roll cage for safety.

“We didn’t know how the aerodynamics would work, but it came out pretty good,” he said.

The final touch was attaching a “slow moving vehicle” sign in the rear of the vehicle, typical for rural tractors, just above the pod where the deceleration chute deploys.

Incredibly, they weren’t able to give the tractor a full test run before the Blytheville competition.

“There were a lot of unknowns,” Schalitz said. “We hadn’t tried to compete for this before, and there are not a lot of flat places around Marietta. On paper, the calculations, everything made sense, but to say I was a little nervous would be understatement.”

The rules require two test runs, she said, which proved to be helpful because she could gauge track distance and how the tractor handled at speed.

“We have a data logger on tractor that records temperatures, RPMs, that sort of thing, and we checked it out, everything was running the way it was supposed to,” she said. “We went back to starting line and just put it all out there.”

Archer confessed to being a bit nervous.

“It was a pretty big experiment, but we hit enough good things right,” he said. “It went like a rocket. Some of my farmer buddies still don’t believe it.”

The tractor has only one gear in the transmission — high — so rules allow a running start with a push vehicle.

“We used a Jeep to push it up to about 40 mph, then it started pulling away from us,” Archer said.

The track is a closed runway that was part of Eakin Air Force Base, named for a World War II and Cold War general and once home to a squadron of B-52s. Closed in 1992, the 11,600-foot runway was perfect for record runs by fast machines.

The meet was organized by the East Coast Timing Association, which keeps official speed records for vehicles ranging from motorcycles and cars to trucks and, well, tractors.

Schalitz let it go and began slowing down after the one-mile mark, where the speed that matters for the record book is clocked.

“I saw dad and the crew coming down to meet me, their hands in the air, and they all seemed very excited,” she said. “I made 106.6 mph on that pass.”

“We were very happy, we achieved what we wanted to do,” she said. “We went back to the trailer, took a break, looked at the data, we were looking at each other saying, ‘We got the record.’ It was really good, we were happy, but then we started talking — why not try to break that record, set it out there a little bit further?”

They headed out for a second run.

“We made a good pass, there were a few things we fought,” she said. “It was a little bouncy, there were a couple of issues in that final run. It was a little difficult getting it shut down, little harder to handle, it was a little intense.”

The Allis Chalmers clocked 108.5 mph.

This was not like riding in a car, Schalitz said.

“It’s open with a roll bar, so the driver is very exposed to that wind. As I got closer to 100 mph, the wind was definitely a factor, it pushes you back in the seat,” she said. “It’s very noisy, the engine is right there. It was a little bit uncomfortable because I’d never done before. It’s a ride I’ll never forget.”

Archer said Schalitz is his youngest child and the one who inherited the family mechanical aptitude. The Archer family owns Pioneer Group, an oilfield servicing firm.

“She’s always been competitive, from high school sports to pulling tractors,” he said. “She was rebuilding superchargers for guys when she was a teenager. She’s whipped about everybody in the country in tractor pulling. She can handle them with the best.”

At one time Archer and his daughter competed against each other in tractor pulling.

“I’d never cut her any slack,” he said.

Archer won the national championship in 1999. Archer’s wife, Arlene, was voted national crew chief in 1996 and Schalitz won the national championship in 2011.

“She deserves a lot of credit,” he said. “What she did on that Allis Chalmers, you got to pucker up to do that.”
