Asphalt in Hay Barn

Hey guys, I've heard that asphalt would be the better choice when used in a hay barn as opposed to gravel or concrete.

Does anyone here have asphalt in their barn?

I was quoted a "base asphalt #57 mixture" and a "surface pavement mix" -- both are way cheaper than concrete -- not entirely sure the difference or what would be the best option, though.

Thanks in advance!

Bale Processing rates

Installed a boiler for a guy to heat his horse barn of all things, check cleared so whatever.

Anyways, he’s looking for some round bales but wants me to run em thru my Jaylor 3650 then he’ll come and get em with a dump truck after being processed.

His son is looking to start breeding horses so they’ll be feeding more and he wants to try some before buying his own to grind/process on site. Guess it's the way all the large horse ranches in Mexico feed theirs, cuts waste down to about nil, just like with cattle.

Whats the going rate for processing bales?

Really love my TV 900

dimanche 30 décembre 2018

A few days ago, the weather was forecast to be stormy so we were feeding early to beat the storms. The wind got up and you could feel the storm coming . Well the gate blew into the feed wagon as the tractor was pulling out past it so the gate got caught and was bent like an L. I should have been holding it but instead I was fishing limbs out of the culvert to avoid it being undermined by the expected floodwaters.
I looked at the bent gate and the 50 bulls there at the feed troughs . Then looked at the sky and the looming dark clouds . I knew I didn't have time the take the gate down and mash it down flat with the skid steer (at the barn) - it would take at least 30 plus minutes for that ... so I said "what do I do Lord " ? Right then I had the answer.. I pulled the 'bota to the bent place on the gate, put the brake on, and pulled and pushed with all my might. It was a light weight gate so I was blessed to have it closable right before the storm hit . The extreme weather alert had already gone off on my phone once as I started bending the gate back .... little did I know it would be another extreme alert going off less than 30 minutes later for a tornado. It was all done though and the gate was securely closed. Back at the barn the wind started making that eerie ominous howling so I looked around ,as I finished the bucket feeding under the barn, but saw nothing that looked like a tornado.. about that time I heard the distant CD sirens going off and the hard rain began and drowned out the siren.. My neighbor 2 miles down the road saw a funnel cloud but it never touched down. I was very grateful. collie

Work light plug type on 2018 RTV-X100c

samedi 29 décembre 2018

Does anyone know what kind of plug is used for the work light wiring harness. I want to add a couple of LED flood lights on the front and back on my RTV, but I'm trying to figure out where I can get a plug so I can connect them to the factory wiring loom already in place. If anyone knows where I can get a plug I would appreciate it.
Thanks

MFP payment

I submitted my crop data the day after I finished up my crops November 22nd.. we received the first half of our MFP money today. I was wondering what would happen as our Farm Service Agency office has been closed all week due to the holidays and now due two the government shut down. Rumor on the street is some people have received the second half of the payment already as well, but I cannot verify that for sure. Has anyone on here received the first and second half of the mfp payment

X1120 Owners - Check Door Latch Bolts

jeudi 27 décembre 2018

Worked our RTV X1120 pretty good today. In the process of closing he driver's door, found the latch had come loose. On closer inspection, an 11MM hex head bolt was laying in the floor of the RTV.

I reinstalled and snugged the bolt. Also snugged the other bolt and the two on the passenger door which were also loose.

These are the half doors and I have only seen them on the X1120. But if you have them on yours, you might check the door latch bolts.

If any of them come loose again, I will add a little blue thread lock.

Hope it helps.

Teddy Bear Hay Fluffer

Hi

Has anyone used the teddy bear hay fluffer? It is hard to find out info about them because. They are made in Canada. The manufacture are Manonites and don't use computers. I called them and really want to try this machine. I cater to the horse hay market. Always use a tedder but really like the basket type but are way to slow. This machine has 6 bars so the ground speed has got to be way better. Plus more teeth.

Come on folks from Canada speak up you guys are using them.

Ok thanks

Hears what they look like if you don't know already.

Some New Holland 560 Round Baler Problems

Since buying new balers this fall we have run into a few warrantable problems on these balers. This is just a post to hopefully help other owners avoid downtime. Biggest thing was the declutch forks being way out of alignment. We finally drilled the fork mounting bracket holes larger so we could get the fork centered properly. Pictures show what it looked like before realignment. We also found that both tension cylinders on both balers are leaking past the rod. New Idea 3715 Spreader RX

I have a NI 3715 spreader bought new I think in 03.  So it has a solid 15 years with non-stop contact with horse manure and sawdust.  Parked in a pit with a roof and 2 sides so not a lot of saturation of the manure other than what is in the bedding.  Had galvanized sidewalls and HDPE floor.  Just putting my 3rd or 4th apron chain it it and see that the chain rub rail at the bed is starting to go.  One spot showing the floor but other areas still have a fair thickness left on the rail.

My question- has anyone been successful in adding a new rail?  There is not enough competence in the existing rail to weld to so I would have to put some type of angle in and bolt to the side wall.  It is not replaceable by itself, it was formed into the sidewall.  If not that approach, what other would you suggest I look at?  I know going to the spreader store is painful and I dump it now anyway since I have lost my place to spread it.  If I replaced it I would get a dump trailer with a spray in bed liner.

Covering equipment with tarp

dimanche 23 décembre 2018

I keep all my equipment in a three sided 39x24’ shed. My Haybine sits all the way in the back and the pop up camper is parked in front of it for the winter.

The Haybine is in near mint condition and the paint is glossy and nearly flawless. I’ve covered it up with a heavy duty tarp to protect from fading and any snow/moisture that could blow in.

But the question on my mind...does covering equipment with a tarp make it rust by TRAPPING moisture?

The tarp sits on the Haybine loosely. It’s only strapped on at the tongue hitch, and there’s a 2x4 laying on top of the Haybine to hold the tarp down on the back. I figure with the reel sticking up it makes a Trent and still allows for enough airspace underneath.

But wonder if anybody here has had any problems with tarped equipment.

Coastal Bermuda time table and treatments needed

samedi 22 décembre 2018

Know the time of the year you do something in your area will vary compared to another area and maybe some things are needed in one area and not another but trying to develop game plan and time table for my coastal bermuda to have a great crop. Do have vassey grass which am getting some control. Crop has produce three cuttings of about 60 bales (square) per acre per cutting. This week saw the last of it sold. We have gotten good reviews of the hay.

Do you burn your fields off and if so the benefits.

What do you spray for before it begins to green up?

When do you apply fertilizer?

When do you apply nitrogen?

When do you apply lime and have you used Bio Liquid Calcium?

Do you subsoil your fields and if so when do you?

Weed killer you like and any you may not impressed with.

How do you patrol for insects?

Any suggestion you have is appreciated.  You have really helped me a lot and it has been appreciated greatly. Thank each of you very much. Kenneth

Harvesttech H2O precision moisture meter?

Looking to add a moisture meter to my "new" BR7070 crop cutter so I can know when to use preservative, and for piece of mind. Not many options out there. Because I do a lot of baleage my NH dealer was telling me about the harvesttech system which will read up to 60% moisture which is the highest of anything else I've looked at. Dealer is telling me it is more accurate than the agratronix bht-2? Anyone have any experience with the system good or bad? Downfall of it is the cost from what i can see.

Newbie Diesel Cold Weather Questionms

Well, guys, at the ripe oid age of 62, I have acquired my first diesel-engined vehicle, my new Kubota RTV-X1100C. It's a great machine and I love it, but I'm beginning to think that many years of owning gas-engined vehicles has left me unprepared for coping with a diesel in cold weather.

I live in northern MIchigan, and although our proximity to Lake Michigan helps moderate the the weather here, it still gets cold. We'll have a lot of 0*F nights and 20 below isn't unusual.

Many of those cold mornings will also see us blessed with a nice heavy dump of lake effect snow, so I need to get out and clear my 1000' long private road. Up to this point, I've done that work with a John Deere Gator (gas EFI, instant starts no matter how cold) and a John Deere X739 garden Tractor (gas EFI, slow to start, terrible snowblower).

I've never had a diesel, though, and I think I had better plan ahead. What do you guys who deal with deep cold do to keep your diesels ready to go? Oil pan heater? Block Heater? Anti-Gel? #1 diesel fuel?

My Kubota is stored in an unheated shed that I built a few years ago. I suppose I could throw a heater in there, but it has board-and-batten siding on post frame construction, so it's neither air-tight nor easily insulated.

If worse came to worse and a blizzard was on the way on some frigid night, I guess I could park the Kubota in my 2 car insulated garage. It's an attached garage, though, and the idea of letting it spew out diesel exhaust into the house for 10 or 15 minutes while it warms up on some cold morning is less than appealing. The best thing would definitely be to leave it in the shed. I know my wife sure wouldn't enjoy the smell of diesel exhaust in the house.

So can I get by with an oil pan heater and careful use of the glow plugs -- or do I need to make other preparations?

Thanks!

Best Review Yet for Kubota 850 Sidekick

By best, I'm meaning most informative. Here is a link to the review:

https://opereviews.com/heavy-machine...g850-sidekick/

After reading this review I am much more impressed with the Kubota team for adding the 850 sidekick to their RTV lineup.

This new RTV will go up to 40mph without the need to stop and shift from H to L when you encounter a hill. The frustration with the stopping and shifting along with the top speed of just 25mph for the RTV 900 was the reason I decided to add a Honda Pioneer 1000 to our stable. The Kubota Sidekick will compete with the Honda Pioneer and Polaris General for work / play UTV options. It makes me wonder about how long Kubota will produce both the RTV 900 and the RTV 850.

If I was in the market for another UTV / RTV machine I would be giving the Kubota 850 Sidekick a very very hard look.

Curtis Plow Instructions? (1UTVP)

I just bought a new 1100C with Kubota's 72" straight plow (72" XTRA DUTY FRONT BLADE W/ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC LIFT AND ANGLE) and I wonder if anyone here could answer a few questions for me. It's painted orange, of course, but it's clearly this Curtis plow: https://curtisindustries.net/product...ulic-utv-plow/

The only "manual" it came with is the same one on the Curtis website, basically instructions to the dealer on how to assemble and install it. There's nothing oriented toward the end user. So I'm wondering:

1) How the heck do I put it in float mode? On my old JD X739, you'd just push past the "downforce" point on the applicable hydraulic lever, feel a click, and downforce would release, putting it in Float. Here, though, there's no release if you keep your thumb on the Down button. What am I missing?

2) When spring comes and it's time to take the plow off, is removal as simple as it appears -- just unplugging one electrical cable, removing the pin from the 2" receiver and backing away? Is the plow truly self-contained, no other connections to the vehicle?

3) Have any of you mounted that controller in a fixed position somewhere in the cab? My old Gator had a dash-mounted joystick for the "PowerTach" plow and I liked that setup better than the hand-held controller in my new 1100C. Of course, with the Gator's lack of power steering, I absolutely NEEDED two hands to crank the wheel around so the fixed joystick was essential. The Kubota's power steering is a real treat in comparison.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!~

For You Square Baler Folks w-Kickers...

This is a series of videos we took baling hay in 2018. First year with the #42 Ejector (pan kicker), so a few bales went over the sides and back... 2018 was a most difficult haying season with all the rain we had and in the video you will see ragged cut grass that was from lodging. We used a John Deere 5055d tractor, JD 348 baler and JD 42 pan kicker - or ejector as Deere calls it. The hay is timothy.

I appreciate everyone's answers to my questions throughout 2018 and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

New Holland Big Baler 340

Looking to add another baler to the fleet.  Currently have a MF 2170 that has been a fantastic baler.  Looking around I can see that I could buy a NH BB340 use for a lot less money.  Even more so if I buy on a auction.  The question though is would I be happy with the NH?  I am only baling alfalfa and dealer support is the same either way.

Running Camso T4s tracks on 2018 RTV-X100c

I’m curious if people running Camso (Camplast) T4s on their RTV-X100c have had any issues? I’m looking to buy a pair of used tracks and the 4S1 model just aren’t available used. Camso states that they T4s won’t fit/work, but I see them on peoples UTVs. I’m curious about issues and wear considering the RTV-X100c is so heavy and the T4s are light weight and shorter compared to the 4S1.

Thanks
Chris

Greetings from northern Michigan

Hi guys,
Thanks for letting me join this forum. I just bought a new Kubota RTV-X1100C with the Kubota 72" straight plow (72" XTRA DUTY FRONT BLADE W/ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC LIFT AND ANGLE).

My main task here in the land of lake effect snow is to clear a 1000' long private road. I'm replacing a John Deere X739 that I was less than thrilled with - very, very wimpy snowblower. Before that, I had a John Deere Gator 620i XUV that I really liked, but the Kubota is far more sophisticated than my old Gator.

I'm sure I'll draw upon your collective expertise quite a bit, but for now I just wanted to say Hi!

Tiny House Living

After two years of battling cancer, and still battling it, it has really taken a toll on us financially. We are still above water, but used a lot of resourses to do it: selling off the equipment, woodlot, sheep, and soon...one of our houses.

The woodlot was cut by a logger who stole the wood; 75 tractor trailer loads. That went to court, but he was handed down a deferred sentence. The restitution is $1800 a month, and a $2000 fine if he pays me per month after Feb 26th 2019, or $200 fine if I am paid in full before that date. He just had all his eqipment repossed by the bank, so I suspect he will be going to jail soon (he has a serious gambling problem) and just do not see him paying me $1800 a month after Feb even.

But when some people from church wanted to rent our home, we thought it would be a good idea to make money on that house (2500 sq ft @ $1000 a month), so we spent $1800, and 5 weeks of working on this Tiny House and moved in. We actually like Tiny House living. before everyone was so spread out, but now we are forced to be a family! The house has lower costs all in all, and while it has a long way to go before it is really how we want it, it is getting there.

About the toughest thing has been for Katie and I. The girls initially did not want to move here, so we told them they could each have their own rooms. This is a four bedroom house, and while TINY rooms, there was (4) bedrooms, where as our old house had only (3) bedrooms. But if you do the math on that, it does not work out well; (4) daughters and a (4) bedroom house...it means Katie and I sleep on the couch/floor. We want to keep this houses small size, so we will have to be creative in doing that, but that is our goal; to stay living Tiny House style.

The house was in rough shape. We stripped it right back to the studs, replacing the sheathing, studs, clapboards, while adding wiring (it essentially had none), adding insulation (it also had NONE), then replaced the wallboard. We also swapped the physical locations of the living room and kitchen, made the bathroom bigger, and brought everything out of the basement like the cold water and hot water tanks. We also jacked the house up, and stiffened the second floor stringers because they were only 2x5's spanning 18 feet, 2 feet on center. Sagging 4 inches, we jacked a few inches out of them, and sistered on new stringers. Having a sawmill helped of course, in getting the costs down, and the strange lumber sizes made.

Sadly, the people from church signed the rental agreement, and then realized how much a 2500 sq ft home costs to heat, and bowed out. It kind of sucked as we already had moved, but now we are thinking about just selling the other place. We own it outright, so the extra money would be nice.

Hay Field Tree Leaf Removal

vendredi 14 décembre 2018

Tree leaves around our hay fields have always been a problem and especially problematic on newly sown fields.  A couple of years Jeff used the hay rake and then rolled them (small rolls/no twine) and dumped them in back in the woods.  Had been following past discussions on here about blowers and finally that project made the top of the list this fall.  Was going to post on one of the original threads but didn't want to go to that much trouble to find them again  ;) .

Tried uploading the little video on here but even edited down it wouldn't work so here is a link that hopefully will work.

Boss V Blade Experiment

jeudi 13 décembre 2018

The past few years here in sw pa has seen milder than usual winters and the ground has not frozen solid. So, whenever I clear the snow from our gravel driveway, I end up plowing gravel also. Shoes on the blade just dig in as well.

I had heard on the Forum where a pipe on the bottom of the blade might help. So, I had to try it. I will post a series of photos explaining how did it. Others with more skill or better tools could do a better job I'm sure.

An arrangement to hold the 3/4" x 36" pipe to cut a 1/4" slot length-wise.

Short term cows

What is your view on buying short term cows.  I am going to look as 35 head of probably 8 or 9 year old cows on Saturday.   These cows have been run on the Red Desert of Wyoming; I will be putting my cows on irrigated pasture next summer, so I will have soft feed for them to eat.  He is asking 900 per head, but I was thinking starting at 750, but not going over 30k.  I would like some opinions here,

Thanks in advance.

Self propelled swather tires

I need to replace the tires on the hw340, dry rot and cracks on a turf type Titan 18.4/26. I do have plenty of hills and there have been some white knuckle rides off wet slopes. What's the opinion of bar type tires on these machines? Are there any scrap yards that I could buy mounted tires off junked machines? I would imagine this is too small for any modern combines to run.

Jenny Pictures

No, my wife is named Katie, I was talking about generator pictures.

There was a good discussion going on the Shout Out Boxes, so I thought I would start the conversation here, mostly to show how Iet my PTO Jenny up for quick use.

Mine is a 20 KW PTO generator, sitting in its own dog house and hard-wired right into the house. It is not as good as a backup generator that comes on automatically, but in 10 minutes can be in service. It can also power up my whole house as well with clean power. I had it given to me, but it needed cleaning up, paint and a PTO shaft, so in all it cost me $300 for it. As for fuel, I have 275 gallons of diesel fuel on hand for emergency use, allowing me 21 days of run-time. The longest our power has been out is 14 consecutive days.

It is not as good as a standby back up generator, but PTO's give pretty good KWs per dollar spent.

Clover vs Alfalfa Leaf Shatter and Dry Down

I’ve got a couple fields that are not ready for prome time haying - yet. I’m going to frost seed some red clover on them to fix some nitrogen over the course of 2019 while I continue to bring these fields back.

In our cattle days, we use to have red clover everywhere. It seemed hardy and required near zero maintenance - as I recall. When I started making squares for horses, we got some dusty hay I believe due to the clover. This was pre-mower conditioner and buffered propionic acid days. We do not have any clover in our main hay fields anymore - straight Timothy.

If I find that this clover (and Timothy) make and give some opportunity to make a little hay and revenue, I’m inclined to bale it.

Question - what is red clover leaf shatter like vs alfalfa? For some reason I’m thinking red clover is pretty tough as compared? How is dry down compared to Alfalfa?

Would be using an impeller mower conditioner. Not really interested in raising Alfalfa and the headaches that come with it - yet.

Thanks!
Bill

Pounding Sawed Posts

I typically use round pressure treated posts and pound them in with our tractor mounted pounder. I had some locust trees come down in a storm and I am considering getting some square posts sawed out of the trunks. Has anyone pounded posts like this in? I am wondering if the post will split under the pounding pressure if the grain isn't 100% straight. I detest digging post holes and tamping posts so I really don't want to go that route.

If pounding woulding work my neighbor has a skidsteer mounted auger. I was wondering if I could use the auger and make a hole but not pull the dirt out of the hole. Just loosen it all up, then pound the post into the loose dirt. Anyone ever try that?

Is X1100 Heating/Cooling as good as auto?

mardi 11 décembre 2018

Is the heating and cooling within the X1100 as good as your car or truck?

We are thinking about one. We love our X1120 but we have missed many productive days in the field because it was too hot or cold or raining.

And while the X1100 won't help keep the rain etc off you while you are working, it gives some shelter out of the elements.

Thoughts?

Has anyone seen or know when Agco is going to release the lelly balers under their brand in North America? Am thinking about a new round baler and they make the short list.

RTV 900 transmission filter differences

In using aftermarket filters marked by numbers, rather than colors, I may have criss-crossed my filters(suction to the topside). However, my transmission seems to work just fine. Should I be concerned and switch them. Does it really make any difference?

Added lights to gator 835M Gator last weekend

Added work and hazard lights to Gator last weekend. Cost me around 120-130.00 for lights and relay. Believe I would of spent 700-800 for factory lights and a beacon light. Beacon light wouldn't clear my garage door so that was out. Lights I bought have 2 rows of leds, one is regular lights and the other row is amber lights, ran 2 rows off of 2 switches. Work real good so far. Will be good for snow plowing and general driving on the country roads.

Tool organization

dimanche 9 décembre 2018

I have the service truck organized pretty well I have it organized that well some days I park it outside the man at the shop and work out of that. Winter is here and that isn't happening anymore had a question on organizing sockets. Between American and Metric deep and shallow and three different drives + 6 and 12 point. We have quite a few different socket sets.. the top half of a 6 drawer plus a couple bottom drawers Craftsman tool box is about filled with socket sets. I'd like to put them in some kind of an organizer so you can see the moments glance which one you going to get out and which one you didn't put back. After battling out with the wrenches I actually have them hanging on nails on the wall and I think that's better I can keep track of them and grab them a lot quicker. I have a small rolling cart that I pushed it whatever I'm working on and keep tools and parts on there while I'm working........ anybody got any good idea on socket organizers before I go to nails on the wall.. which probably wouldn't be practical for quarter inch Drive sets anyway

Rotary rake tine arm seal leak?

samedi 8 décembre 2018

I have a fair amount of grease and crud on the tine arms on my rotary rake (Miller Pro 900). There's some on the underside of some arms and a little bit around where each arm bolts to the gear box. I checked the gear oil level throughout the season and it wasn't low.

Referring to page 24 and 25 of the parts manual, I'm wondering if it would be the arm gaskets (#28), potentially the oil seal (#32) on the arm, or #18 oil seal.

Now that I think about it, when I received the rake the arms had been removed, and when I was reinstalling the arms I don't recall any #32 seal being there, just the big washer, so maybe the seals ripped apart when they removed the arms. But that doesn't look to be where the oil is coming from.

Disc Mower Conditioner vs Ground Speed vs Quality of Cut???

Where do you folks draw the line when it comes to quality of cut vs ground speed in heavy first cuttings of grass hay and subsequent 2nd, 3rd cuts? What is your max MPH and cutting height? At these higher speeds, especially on heavy first cut, are you getting a golf course manicured cut or a ragged cut and that’s OK, hay is on the ground deal?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Taking a dozer apart

A friend of mine has I think bought a D8 somewhere near Indiana Pa and he was looking for someone that could remove the blade to get it ready for transport. I guess he's trying to avoid making the trip there just for that. I was wondering if any of you guys in Pa would know or know of anybody that would be capable of doing that.

         Thanks

Small square bales

I went to the Tulsa farm show yesterday. No baron or arcusin. Bale bandit Owen was there with his 42 bale bundle. Had pics on his phone of prototype "baler of the future" 2 bales 20-21" tied together for a 42" long bale. Said the baler that baled them was a chambered down 1842 with several mods i think he said 16 ball twine storage swing out twine boxes and around 75% more plunger force than a 1840. Said it was still a shear pin setup for now but working on that also. Had hydraulic valving on the baler for knotter engagement. All just from memory.... What's the thought on a 20" bale. Will it sale? How much cheaper than a standard size bale? I just ordered a 4245p baron and I am concerned about the dinky sized bales that I have seen being sold from baron packs 30-32" I know standlee has the compressed bales. But I don't see selling quantity in my area. I think the grady double baler idea would be a better investment if it was chambered down to a 14x18. I have two operations about 40 mile apart so I will still be running my bandit 200. anyone ever get complaints over short bales?

Time to replace the front axle RTV900

vendredi 7 décembre 2018

Well....my '04 RTV900 is in need of a new front axle after I noticed the boot has busted in half. I can't complain as she is 14 years old and not had any major issues.

My question is that which axle to buy? They are so cheap that it doesn't make sense to repair the boot alone. I see them on eBay from $60 for a Caltric brand to $104 for an American CV. They all have a 5 star rating. Forget about going to the dealer for a price.

So....would you gamble on the cheap one? Has anyone bought from eBay and what are your thoughts?

NH 275 hay knives adjustment

jeudi 6 décembre 2018

Hey guys. Got the baler running after lots of reading and help here.
I noticed ragged bales while baling Tully grass (stalky) and removed the knives to sharpen them as they were very blunt.
After replacing, I found the gap between the knives to be about 1/4”!
Before I go adding shims, I was going to adjust the bearings in case of a clash.
The manual is contradictory though saying “Bearing 6, figure 32, can be moved sideways to center it on rail B, Figure 30, by loosening the wrist pin set screws and sliding the wrist pin to the left or to the right as required.
Bearings 1, 4, and 5, Figure 31 and bearing 6, Figure 32, are not adjustable”
Seems bearing 6 leads a double life.
Could someone please help with adjustment in beginner terms?

Record Keeping

I have leased some pasture for next year, and now with the added space I am going to increase my numbers.  I am currently using a spreadsheet, but I really don't like how I have it set up.  I need something better to keep track of all my cows.  Is there any good software out there? or maybe a good spreadsheet template that you don't mind sharing.  There has to be something better than what I have now.

Planted ryegrass

Planted some ryegrass. Had my dad do it as I was busy harvesting pecans. Thought he was going to use a no till drill. He came back with a deere regular drill with double coulter openers. Said it worked good since ryegrass doesnt need to be out in the soil. Glad i stopped him before he started they gave him gulf ryegrass seed instead if tetraploid. Was wondering though, we are forcasted for 4 inches of rain tomarrow think there is a chance it could wash away?
Coop told him a no till drill cant plant ryegrass seed at 1/2 inch deep.
Lastyear i had prepaired the seedbed and where i planted 1/2 inch deeo it worked better becuase i had a little moisture deeper to getit going. Rest didnt come up till a month later when we got a rain. So this year i was think8ng out it in half inch down so the rain wouldnt wash it away.
Thoughts?

What is your cost of production?

Working on some year end business, its always interesting to figure cost of production. Whether its straight alfalfa, alfalfa/grass mix, straight grass, or somewhere in between, what is your cost of production per ton? I am always amazed at what it ACTUALLY costs to produce a ton of hay. I realize there is differences in quality, and that adds or detracts a little from cost of production. After I had to sell the cows, I figured my CoP per pound of beef, I was amazed where i could have changed management practices and made a big difference. Our corn/soybean CoP isnt totally done yet as we just finished harvest last tuesday. Insurance hasnt gotten back to us on total payment.

Im not totally done doing the math yet, so I will add mine when I get to that point.

Portable gas air compressor

I had a wheelbarrow type gas engine air compressor in my truck for years. Great for blowing out radiators and filling tires and nail guns for construction. As you can imagine, After several years in the weather, it looks really bad and mechanically began to fail, too. It was always in the way which was annoying.
I need on board air, but won't buy another gas compressor until I can keep it stored in a tool box.
My truck underbody boxes are 3x2x2. The only gas powered unit I can find that will fit in tool box is a Rolair GD4000PV5H. Very good quality compressors. Smaller pancake tank and Honda motor. Another nice thing: The pull cord it situated where if I drop the underbody box lid down, I can pull start it. It will live much longer in the shelter of a tool box/doghouse. If I want to take it out of the box, it's light and at a height that's easy to unload/load.
Problem is, this little compressor it really expensive for its size. Best price I can find is $749. Used units don't exist. However, I found a "new" one on EBay for $375 (shipping included). Seller claims they bought it, new in box, but it won't start. They say it has spark and that's about it. Seller has 100% reputation.
Any ideas what could be wrong with it?
Also wonder why the seller didn't return it to Rolair for warranty repair? (Asked them same, waiting on reply)
I'm in at $375, but thought I'd see what you, the experts, think about it.

Solar farm

We live right next to a large electric transmission line.. company is in the area and they are talking to all farm land owners that are either under or beside the electrical line.. they say they can offer a lease a 30 to 50 years for the construction of a solar farm.. I would have to do a lot of research on the matter.. current income levels offered are four to five times anything you could ever do farming the land.... this is the first I heard of something of this nature.. does anyone see this going on in the area where they Farm...

Yet Another Late Season Hay Question

Going to have a 7 day window of rain/snow free weather and contemplating wrapping some hay. This hay is timothy, orchard, and smooth brome and has been through several deep freezes and thaw cycles.

Is it worth it??

99% would be sold and what I don't want is bales of slime. Have never made hay like this so if nobody else has I may just do a few bales and feed myself and see what the results are.

Plan would be to mow everything Sunday and bale Mon.-Thursday. Temps are in upper teens at night with 32 being the highs. Should be just cold enough to put a crust on the ground to minimize making ruts.

Would not be thinking of doing this but need the income from sales and I am predicting it will sell decently. Earlier this fall already had an inquiry for semi loads of baleage for spring.

Parts counter advice?

mardi 4 décembre 2018

So our parts guy had surgery today and will be gone for probably 6 weeks, most of that time I will be the only one there that knows how to run the system (and I don't know as much as I'd like) , so I'm just asking for any helpful tips from the guys that have been in this much longer than me.

Backhoe Attachments

dimanche 2 décembre 2018

When buying a new tractor, instead of buying a backhoe attachment, why not buy a good used 2 or 4 wheel drive backhoe? Something you will not have to worry about breaking, something that was designed from the ground up to be a backhoe.
This is just one of several auction sites that sell farm machinery

? for Gearclash

When you mentioned the dealers changed the timing of the stuffer, I became curious as to what they could change.  The only part I could see that could possibly be changed was the augers bolted to the stuffer.  I am attaching a file showing the auger and stuffer from a 560.  The way the machines come from the factory is with the end of the auger in alignment with the first stuffer finger.  If your stuffer is not like that, could you take a photo of the stuffer auger in relation to the stuffer.  Thanks

What's the scoop on hay tarps?

samedi 1 décembre 2018

Next year I plan on doubling my straw production from 5 thousand bales to 10. My current straw barn will hold 5,500 when its jammed full. I have a nice stone lot next to that building that I'm strongly considering stacking the remainder of the straw and tapping it. Also I live in central Ohio. It rains and snows alot here. Hahaha what are some experiences that you guys have had with them. What are some good brands of hay tarps and ways to fasten them down. Also do you lay a trap on the ground and wrap it up or stack on pallets?
