Hello all. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I'm thinking of growing straw to bale as bedding at some point and wondering how this is done. I'm trying to cut back on the big expense that bedding has become for me. I know straw is technically only the stem with the head removed but is there another option for growing bedding? Could I grow winter rye, and cut/bale when it browns? Or will my sheep and cows eat it ? We are running through so much wood flake bedding that its become almost the biggest expense on our small farm. We have more than enough good ground to grow something to replace it, I would think.
Thanks in advance for all the advice/opinions
Kirk
