Need advice on my new alfalfa please

mardi 2 juin 2015

I planted new alfalfa 15 days ago and have a problem.  A little back-round first, 3 years ago this alfalfa field needed replanting.  I don't have the equipment to break it up so i had the neighbor farm it for 3 years and asked him not to put sunflowers in the third year.  Well he did put sunflowers in the third year and now i have a problem.  I worked the field this spring and harrowed the sunflower stocks and burnt then.  Then had the local coop broadcast 17 lbs of alfalfa, 1.5 lbs of meadow broom and some fertilizer.  I then lightly harrowed the seed in.   the picture shows the volunteer sunflowers and the alfalfa just starting.  I am afraid these flowers are gonna take off and use up my fertilizer and take the moisture away from the alfalfa.  The other problem is I sell hay and who is gonna want sunflowers in the hay.

I cant spray this I did not use RR alfalfa seed and they are both a broad-leaf.  My only idea is once the flowers get 6.8 inches tall cut them with a mower and leave them lay on the ground.  I am open for and suggestions
