I am fairly new to hay farming. So I'm looking for some guidance. I have recently purchased a small farm in Michigan. I planted 35 acres of Timothy/Alfalfa the first week of May. There was corn on it last year. The soil is Sandy. I used a Brillion SS-8 at #12 acre. The stand is coming in thin. I did not fertilize as I didn't know what the previous farmer did and there has been a lot of talk about a dry summer in this part of the state. which so far has not been the case. It has been suggested that I let the field grow, skip mowing it this year and let the seeds grow back on itself. Does this make any sense? Should I wait until next year for my first cut?
Thank you for your input.
Should I skip the first cut after planting
