I am considering a new mower. Right now we have an old 3pt sickle bar mower that needs work and a small brush hog.
We mostly just mow pasture after the cattle move through, 2-4 times a month. Then we cut hay when the cattle cant keep up. We do this on 40 acres with less than 10 head grazing this year and fewer over the winter. we have been buying most of our hay for the winter yet we have put a lot of effort into the back 10 acres and i except to get a first cutting off of that.
We have 2, 65 hp tractors and are considering buying newer equipment as my wife will be doing much of the work and i may not be around to fix it. We also have the option of cutting hay on the adjacent 70 acres. (Grass, grass-clover hay)
being such a small scale i am hoping to find a hay mower that will sale work for clipping the pasture. The newer style sickle bars seem to have less clogging issues and could be raised up fairly easily for pasture. I don’t know if drum mowers can be raised. I have read that some disc mowers have adjustable shoes that allow up to a 6” cut.
We have access to both a small square and a round baler.
What type of mower would work best for this dual purpose use? Rolling hilly land, sickle bars are a bit of a hassle with the contours.
Dual purpose mower
