Starting out!

mardi 31 mars 2020

Hi! I am about to get out of the Army in about a year, and my wife and I intend on starting a ranch in central Texas. I worked on farms growing up but none of them delt with live stock. Honestly im just looking for any information y'all could give me that might help me while starting the ranch. Some questions I am a little curios about is how many head of cattle I would need to make any where close to a profit as well as needed land size, or any recomended  equipment I might need. Possible budgeting and book keeping advice would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Starting out!

Grease! Lets talk brands, types and why

I'm on the hunt for a new grease.  I've been using Mystic General Purpose NLGI#2 for a few years.  My source is no longer available.  I've been thinking of switching to Lucas Red and Tacky #2.  Like others I want one grease that fits all, u joints, PTO shafts, baler bearings ect.  I hate having different types of grease for different application, but if i need to i will.  I've looked at the grease compatibility chart that is floating around and it seems the two I have referenced here will work together.  So changing over shouldn't be an issue.

Let me know what you all use and why.  If this has been hashed out let me know, i'll be happy to delete this thread, but i searched and didn't find anythign.

NH 570 baler

Heading off to an auction next week maybe dragging home a NH 570 baler. I will be inspecting baler and other equipment this weekend. I have a NH 316 that is well maintained. Any tips of what to look for that is different then the NH 316 baler that maybe a concern.

I want to relace all the belts on my baler. Is it a problem that they will be 420" after the relacing (currently b/c of shrink they are all about 422")?

Looking at rotary rakes.

I'm looking at three rotary rakes and was wondering what thoughts you folks might have. The first is a Pequea HR1140 for $4000 that's in good shape (just needs a couple tines). The other two are a used NH 3114 and a New 3114. The used 3114 is in really good condition. The prices are $7700 for the used 3114 and $9000 for the new one.

One thing on noticed on the Pequea was the decal in the picture. Does this mean that it can't be raised to clear a windrow while raking?

KIMG0959.jpg

Any thoughts on these rakes ones way or the other? I do mow with a JD 940 that leaves about a 9 foot swath.

Large square baler comparison & knotter fan

Found 2 balers I like (4910 and a BB960). Both are available. 4910 4x4 28k bales is at local very good dealer who will give me some support. BB960 3x4 32k bales & applicator would require 500 mile shipping. Both are in the 15-18k range. Both have excellent exterior appearance and good tires. Both have working monitors. I don’t have much other information. Leaning to the 4910, but I like the tandem axle layout on the BB960 and the ability to stack 3 high for shipping and storage in field. I can get great support on the 960 as well from local NH dealer.

Is a knotter fan a big plus? 4910 doesn’t have one.
Thoughts, advice, etc on either baler?

Spraying liquid N?

My neighbor asked me some questions about applying N with a sprayer. I haven't calibrated a sprayer in yrs so I thought I'd ask on here. He has a Hi-pro pump & broadcast not boom sprayer. I remember spray tip size, ground speed & pump pressure affect gallons per acre. Does one apply N full strength or diluted with some water similar to former local ag product store?

Thanks for any assistance,Jim

New Holland 1033 stackliner problems

lundi 30 mars 2020

I recently purchased a 1033. In preparation for the season I’ve noticed a couple issues. 1. The load arm goes all the way to the ground. How can I adjust this to ride a few inches off the ground? 2. The pickup chain (on the load arm) won’t run continuously unless you HOLD the lever forward. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance

Seeder recommendation

dimanche 29 mars 2020

I'm shopping for a seeder, as I've finally committed to replanting my hay fields here on the home farm this year. I'd like to get something I can use for overseeding too, as I may not always have tilled soil to plant in. I'd like to keep it to a narrower width - somewhere between 6 -10 ft wide, so I can also reseed pastures and paddocks with 12' gates. Either trailed or 3PT, and my main tractor is on the smallish side at 50 HP.

I've mostly been considering landscape type or food plot seeders, but there seem to be a fair number of IH 510, 5100, and Brillion seeders available locally on the used market. I've also looked at some of the Woods precisions seeders.

I'm not looking to do anything other than grass, maybe some alfalfa mix at some point down the road but pretty much straight grass is what I'm needing to plant, primarily an Orchard/Rye/Fescue/Timothy blend, and some bluegrass blends for the paddocks and pastures.

I've never run or owned a seeder before other than a Landpride no-till turf seeder when I was in the lawn and tree care industry 30 years ago, so I'm basically starting from scratch here and have no bias or preconceived notions of what brand is better or worse. Any advice would be cheerfully accepted!

Please help educate me - and thanks!

Anyone NOT Keep a Back-up Square Baler?

Thinking about parting ways with my otherwise trusty New Holland 68 baler which has been on back-up duty since the JD 348 arrived, mostly to save shed space.  However, I got a funny feeling as soon as it goes down the road, I'll have premium hay on the ground, the JD will breakdown and I'm cooked - LOL!

Anyone NOT keep a back-up baler around?

If not, what was your worse case getting your square baler fixed and/or your hay baled without loosing your shirt on the breakdown?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Bill

Weed Control

samedi 28 mars 2020

I have a hay field landlord that keeps about 1 acre at the end of the leased hay field that we work and insists that I need to spray his acre for weed control so he can plant his vegetable garden that he lets grow up with a bad case of ragweeds yearly. I agreed to spray his part on the condition that he tell me what product, how much and when to spray. Of course I will need to be careful of overspray next to our hay field. I am not aware of a good and safe product that people can spray on their vegetable gardens. Meanwhile hes researching and I`m sure it wont amount to much on what he finds out. I have researched a product Goal 2XL but have little knowledge of its use for sure. Anyone have any products in mind?

Krone 870 Multi pack HDP is it worth it?

vendredi 27 mars 2020

I live in North West Colorado and I grow and sell all of my hay for horse and the spoiled or number 2 hay gets sold for cows.

I also do a small amount of custom baling.

The demand for smalls bales is growing so I been considering the multi pack 870.  Has any one ever worked with this baler? Do you think the bales in the multipack will replace the small bale?  I must add I dont think any of my customers around here will cut the strings and try to send the bales into a hay loft. (Like I use to do with dad)   Most will be stored on the ground or in a shed.

So I Looking for advice on if the 870 can replace my 890 and also accomendate many of the small bale users?

If you are not familair with an 870 heres is a link.

Diesel Fuel Filtering

I was new to diesel when I got the BX2230 and then the X1120D.

I had to buy a couple of new fuel containers, yellow so that my lovely Mrs and the kids did not accidentally put the wrong fuel in the right tank.

When I get a new fuel can, I rinse it with water thoroughly and let it dry upside down in the sun. Once it is completely dry, I install the ezflow high volume spout and its vent. Once that is done, to insure nothing fell into the tank, I hit it with a little compressed air and inspect it.

OK, so both of these cans were then filled with diesel and I filled up my equipment. Now empty, I brought them home from the farm to re-fill them and noticed a considerable about of floating crud in the bottom of both cans. Remember, they went from the fuel station pump directly to the farm when they were used and never exposed to anything else.

My question for you folks who have more experience with diesel, does it usually have a lot of crud in it from the filling station? I noticed two large filters inline on the fill hose. Could crud be getting through those filters?

Appreciate anything insight on this.

Bermuda - Broadleaf Weed Control prior to 1st cutting

jeudi 26 mars 2020

Good day gang.

So, i put out 1 pint/acre of glyphosate, along with 2 quarts/acre of Prowl H20 about a month ago.  Sometime in mid-February.  Picked a nice sunny day that had a high temperature of about 62 degrees.

I'm disappointed in the control that I achieved  with the glyphosate on some winter broadleaf weeds that are still hanging around as of yesterday.  My coastal is starting to wake up with the recent weather patterns.  It will be time to put out my first good shot of fertilizer in another couple of weeks, as we're just about outside of our frost window here in the Southeast.

I'm a bit fearful to go out soon with something like 2-4,D or Weedmaster, knowing that the bermuda doesn't exactly love that product.  I don't really want to tinge it while it's waking up from dormancy.  My gut tells me to just let them be and plan another application for after my 1st cutting.  Just wanted to see if any of you all have ran into this scenario before and what may have worked out in your situations.  Suggestions?

Thanks!

New holland 650 take up arm

mercredi 25 mars 2020

I replaced the bearings in my take up arm rolls on my 650. Trouble is I can’t get the take up arm to extend for some reason to get the pin Under the arm to let the tension back off belts. I left the belts in and used a hose connected to tractor to work the take up arm. I loosened the tension off the tension cylinder I just don’t know why when I raise the gate all the way up then work the arm it doesn’t move. Any tips? Do I need to loosen spring on bottom of tension cylinder?

Speed loss on X900

I have noticed a loss of uphill power with my X900 and it is not related to fuel filter, pump, etc. I have 9,000 miles on the machine. I installed a hand throttle which helps when plowing. I am very familiar with how to "down shift" with the hydrostatic transmission by easing off on the pedal and this still works fine. It is just a bit more sluggish on hills. I ran across this video while searching for ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz6Rb9wBwf8
I've been kicking this around for a year and today I decided to give it a try. It is quite amazing what 3/4 of a turn did! I believe this hollow threaded rod is a micro adjustment for fuel delivery to the fuel rail. Tomorrow I will give it more of a test, but after today's adjustment it seemed to be an amazing change. I was testing it on a hill with 6 inches of new snow and I didn't have to "play" with the pedal to continue on.
Has anyone done this? This is easy to do - the most difficult thing was taking the anti-tamper cover off!

Front Locker for X1120?

The 1120D has a manual rear locking diff and it has come in very handy on more than one occasion.

But the front diff is open and never seems to catch on the right wheel to help pull its weight.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket locker option for the front diff?

I would have paid extra for it if available at time of purchase.

Thanks

BR7060 round baler electrical plug

I am working on a br7060 that had a light tailgate fire. It appears the previous owner yanked hard on the electrical wires to get them disconnected. Two of the pins are pulled off the wires and most of the pins are pulled out of the connector. I assume I need to get the pins out of the connector and resolder to the wires then put the entire connector back together? Anyone do this before?

Your Best Bait for Trapping Rats

mardi 24 mars 2020

After searching HayTalk and not finding this topic, I hope this is the approptiate place to introduce it. The Internet states that peanut butter is one of the best baits for trapping rats. I tried it and didn't get any takers. Neither rats or mice would touch it, and I knew that they were in my shop. When I noticed these vermin would chew holes in 5 gallon plastic buckets to get at shelled corn stored in them, the idea hit me to super glue five kernals of corn onto the trigger of Victor rat traps, and this bait has been catching one or two rats every night. Also, beginning to catch mice in the rat traps.

What bait do you find is best for trapping rats in your farm buildings?

Attached is an article from this month's 'Hay & Forage Grower', along with a spreadsheet that I created.  I wish I had this material in hand about 15 (or more) years ago.  I could have paid for several sheds (or as they say, I did pay for several, just never got them :o).

Now, for the cost to build I used my actual costs for my building from last year.  Naturally, your cost per square foot could be different, but at least it should get you closer than just using the 'old SWAG' method.  You could even cut cost(s) by having open sides, no asphalt floor, no doors, no concrete rat wall or concrete approaches. Or add to the cost by doing things differently (eg more asphalt).

On the flip side, you could look at off season storage as a bonus, too. ;)

My two cents for today.

Massey Harris Suntyne 500

Hi I am new to the forum and hoping someone may be able to help me with some advice, I have just purchased a Massey Harris Suntyne 500 combine with baker boots its in fairly good condition for a 1957 model machine I have downloaded the original manual for this machine but still trying to get my head around how it all works as the previous owner left some super in the fert box and hours later and 5 cans of inox I have finally freed it up. It has the small seed box also but this does not seem to be connected to the gearbox? I am wanting to use it for mainly Rye and Clover in some paddocks which will be rotary hoed and worked up first and some paddocks just direct drilled. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this old combine drill ?  Thanks in advance.  I will post a pic of the machine once I work out how to.

Buying a new disc mower, but...

lundi 16 mars 2020

I am trying to buy a new disc mower. I don't want or need a conditioner.  I am considering mounted and trailed, but would like to keep the price down, as I only bale around 600 bales for my own use. My main question or problem is that I have several fields that grow rocks and would like the ability to  keep the cutting height as high as possible. Local dealers include Kuhn, Krone, New Holland and Vermeer. Have read all the technical data I can find and it seems that most of the mowers, even with skid shoes, the maximum cutting height is around 3 inches.

Does anyone use skid shoes on mounted mowers? Some of the trailed mowers can cut higher, but cost almost twice as much. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for any help, advice.

Successful broadcasting of hay?

I'm looking to graduate my mulch farm into a hay farm here, but the mulch market hasn't left with much of a spending budget. So I'm looking to broadcast my hay seed. My question is on rates because most of the spreaders seem to generally like being much higher than the 6 pounds per acre timothy calls for. Plus I've read hay seed won't travel that far which to me would make an even more concentrated. I know for broadcasting you have to do a heavier application but it still seems far off. Do I cut the seed with something else? That's the only thing I can think of. Thanks!

Acumen for bermudagrass pastures

Hello all-

Just put out Acumen which has the same active ingredient as Prowl for a pre emergent. We then proceeded to get about 4 inches of rain over 3 days. Question is does anyone know if that amount of rain will hurt the effectiveness of a pre emergent, and also what is the yellow color all about? Is it just a dye to tell where you've sprayed? My sprayer is permanently dyed now. Thanks.

Seeding with Brillion grass seeder

I’m looking at purchasing a Brillion grass seeder to do my seeding this year. In the past, I was using a JD BA drill and just letting the seed drop from the grass seed box, then harrow then using the land roller. Seeding alfalfa and grasses with small and large seeds makes for inconsistent fields.
the field has been plowed in the past 2 years, so ground is soft. I have been discing in my fertilizer prior to seeding .
I'm wondering if a person needs to use a land roller prior to seeding with a Brillion seeder, or after seeding.
also, do people harrow after seeding to get rid of the tractor tire imprints to level the field.
my soil type is dark grey.
thanks for the feedback.

I'm looking at buying a Kuhn rotary rake. The model I'm looking at is a 4101 drawbar hitch. Is this a good rake. My neighbor has a 4121 and I'm not sure what the differences are between the two. Thanks.

Coronavirus

I expect Coronavirus will be on everyone's mind for a while. So this needs its own thread instead of appearing randomly in unrelated categories.

With hand sanitizer long gone from local stores I looked at the ingredients and concluded denatured Ethyl (not Methyl) alcohol is the primary ingredient. But I don't see a source for that. Shellac thinner is a blend of both varieties of alcohol so not suitable for continual skin contact.

Looking farther, Sterno's 'green' Ethanol Gel Fuel (not regular Sterno) might be a suitable replacement for gel sanitizer. Anybody know?

Are there any inexpensive and available substitutes for pharmacy sanitizer?

High-proof liquor is near pure ethyl alcohol but darned expensive and I don't think it's even sold here. I've never seen the legendary 151-proof Bacardi that I sampled once on their veranda in Puerto Rico.

Great Plains NTS 2511 No Till Seeder

Has anyone got any experience with one of these? I think they're fairly new, out maybe a few years now. I'm looking for something that can be used for over seeding older existing grass hay fields, plumping up thinning Alfalfa stands with a little Orchard Grass, and planting new Alfalfa and or grass hay on prepared seed bed. Looks like it may be very similar in function to a Brillion Seeder with the addition of an adjustable spike roller on the front to provide a bit of residue/soil disturbance. Thanks for any feedback!

Pasture leveling question

mercredi 11 mars 2020

I have a 5 acre pasture that my cows rotate into during the summer but with the really wet year they made so many footholes that it's hard for me to walk or even take the atv through. I'd like to smooth it out a bit but it's a pretty good slope so I'm not too sure on a disc. My idea is to use a 2ft diameter telephone pole cut about 10ft long and drag it. I think that may fill in some holes without too much damage to the ground. Any thoughts on that or ideas?

Renewing old hay fields filled with weeds. Convert to horse pasture in future

Researching best practices for preparing existing hay fields that can eventually be turned into horse pasture.  Not sure what all types of grass or legumes.  Mostly Brome grass, I'm told.  There are also abundant weeds, poison ivy, rag, thistle, etc ...  Need to eradicate.  What I want to do is turn this into Orchard grass (not sure what variety to use) with perhaps a legume.  Thought about Clover, but don't too much of that.  I don't want Timothy.  What other Varities would work well with Orchard?  The goal is to use for hay, but be able to easily convert into pasture.

Any suggestions for a game plan is appreciated

breaking in new baler

getting a new silage baler in this spring, have read through the owners manual and talked to sales rep about the break in process.  Book tells you to make 100 dry bales at 50% pressure and at least 6 inch under max diameter.  I have an understanding that it is break the belts in and to get initial wear on the side walls.  My issue is the first 500 bales i have planned for it will be silage bales, not dry as the book recommends.  My first thought was to rebale a corn stalk bale and let it spin the chamber for 5-10 minutes.  Didn't get a solid answer back from sales rep so im reaching out to see if anyone has been in similar situation

Unloading Super sacks

mardi 10 mars 2020

Has anyone made a homemade device to open and close the bottom tube on Super sacks . More products are coming in sacks which make sense for my operation. I looked on line but can’t really find anything but expensive commercial units. Maybe I need to invent something.

As seen on TV

I have never bought into the as seen in TV products but I have found one that has really worked well for me I have been dealing with a leak on my Polly sprayer tank for a few years now and have tried everything to fix it including poly welding it, fiberglass resin, epoxy, marine Tex, JB weld you name it and it always fails and starts to leak. It originated had a puncure home about the size of a quarter and spider cracks about 6-8” long around it so it was pretty bad. But what I have Finley used and has worked really well is FLEX TAPE who would of thought the stuff would acutely work so well. Maybe this will help somebody else fighting the same struggles I was having.

Every day ...I check...

Every day I check these forums hoping to pick up some solution to some previously-unknown problem with my X900... but...once-agin... disappointment.... No new posts informing me of someone’s difficulty with their RTV whose knowledge and/or discovery I might some-day find useful for my own if/when it ever displays similar symptoms.

“Dang!”, I think.

Then...it hits me. This is GOOD NEWS!

Doh!

(Really enjoy using my little RTV-X900 around the ranch. Just passed 1000 miles on this 2014 model.). :dancing:

Planting After Roundup?

What are your thoughts about planting grasses after killing a field with roundup?

I’ve got a field I’d like to take a May 1st cut, kill with roundup and the put on Teff around May 15.

Would consider doing the same come this fall after whatever second cut we get, kill with roundup and plant Timothy a few weeks later.

Anyone have any thoughts and/or success doing this?

Thanks!

Kuhn Discbine crimping rolls?

Taking the rolls out of our 283rtg the bottom roll is bad. Everything came apart pretty easily now we just have to get the bolts loose that hold the stub shafts onto the rolls. Does anybody know if those bolts are locktighted in? do I have to heat them first? On a side note the lower roll outside ends the rubber peeled first does that spot get more wear from the extra hay from the end turtles?

How long does it take pasturegard to work?

Sprayed my hay fields today with pasturegard @ 1pT/AC and 40# N.  Should reach 70 this afternoon, mid 40s over night, mid 60s most of the week.  probable light showers tomorrow.  How long does it take pasturegard to show effects of working, three main offenders are chickweed, henbit and speedwell?

Dual purpose mower

I am considering a new mower. Right now we have an old 3pt sickle bar mower that needs work and a small brush hog.

We mostly just mow pasture after the cattle move through, 2-4 times a month.  Then we cut hay when the cattle cant keep up.  We do this on 40 acres with less than 10 head grazing this year and fewer over the winter.  we have been buying most of our hay for the winter yet we have put a lot of effort into the back 10 acres and i except to get a first cutting off of that.

We have 2, 65 hp tractors and are considering buying newer equipment as my wife will be doing much of the work and i may not be around to fix it.  We also have the option of cutting hay on the adjacent 70 acres.  (Grass, grass-clover hay)

being such a small scale i am hoping to find a hay mower that will sale work for clipping the pasture.  The newer style sickle bars seem to have less clogging issues and could be raised up fairly easily for pasture.  I don’t know if drum mowers can be raised. I have read that some disc mowers have adjustable shoes that allow up to a 6” cut.

We have access to both a small square and a round baler.

What type of mower would work best for this dual purpose use?  Rolling hilly land, sickle bars are a bit of a hassle with the contours.

New Holland 678 baler repair

dimanche 8 mars 2020

I’m doing a bit of preseason maintenance and I need to replace the bearings in the take up arm rollers. My problem is the anchor bolts will not unscrew enough to relieve tension on the springs connected to the take up arms.I’ve cleaned out the trash trapped inside the spring coil and it seems? that the threads are rusted restricting free turn. Obviously I can’t clean the threads inside the spring with a die as there’s no access. The lock nut is free. I’ve sprayed lubricant in there every time I’ve worked it In and out, probably 5-6 times. These bolts back out about the same amount each time not seeming to gain any ground. The baler is approximately 20 years old so I’m confident there could be rust on the threads although it doesn’t appear excessive.

Does anyone have any tips to overcome this obstacle?

Karmex DF

I have never used anything with residual and was looking for something to mix with Roundup (generic) to get longer results. I was wanting something to use under trees, around bulbs, fence lines, the side of driveways and alongside buildings. My local supplier recommended Karmex. I haven't read every word of the label but it seems like there are a lot more "don't" than "do". I'm also finding it difficult to find mixing rates for spot treatment/ backpack sprayer. I live in town but farm outside of town. First thing I noticed was not to be used inside town. Is this just because the spray lays on top of the ground until rained in and could be tracked around or handled by the neighborhood kids? Is a cup of powder in a 4 gallon sprayer right? Anybody have any experience with this stuff?

TRITICALE - When will it be ready to cut?

Hello everyone,

So last fall (late October-Early November) I drilled in a bunch of Triticale. I wanted to plant it earlier but out of season rains delayed things. I'm very pleased with how well it came up, the fields look like thick carpets of green.

However - I'm getting a little impatient/antsy as I want to plant Sudan grass in the same land, ideally around the first week of April. I could push that back to the first week of May if needed, but I dont want to risk planting it later as there is almost zero rain where I live between late May and September, and I want it to be established by the time the water shuts off.

Anyway, I'm nervous that it might not mature in time for me to plant the sudan grass by then.

After having around 4 months to grow, its grown between 4 and 16 inches in height. Yes, I took soil samples and fertilized as directed. We did not have winter here also, we had maybe 2 weeks combined where it was around 40 degrees, then highs in the 70s and 80s in January/February. I've never grown this stuff before but I'm also anxious that the almost total lack of cool weather will stunt its grown further.

Questions:

1) Based on the above, what are my chances of this turning into a decent crop? How likely is it that it'll grow to 24-30 inches in height?

2) Should I "cut my losses" and bale this as a measly crop so I can plant the Sudan grass on time [April 1st]?

3) For those of you that've grown Triticale before, what week/month do you generally mow it for dry hay? Is my original goal of mowing in late March or April too optimistic/rushed?

Thanks in advance.

I am wondering if any of you people have used a Koyker round bale mover? You can pull it with a pickup or tractor. Has the arm on the right side to load it, then side dumps them to the left. No chains. I can't find one close to try. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks

Need a baler

I’m looking for a round baler to do 80 acres. Preferably twine because they’re cheaper. Not sure either 4x5 or 5x6. I guess I just need suggestions. I don’t want anything super old. 15-20 years old is about the max. Looking to spend 5-10k. Possibly more. In KY if anyone has something for sale. Some help would be very appreciated!

Square bale wrappers

A few years back i saw a video on a bale wrapper that would wrap multiple large square bales at a time.  Was it a one off machine or are they available to buy.  Anyone seen or used something like that?   Know the guy who has one?   We need a way to store more dry hay outside or we will have to build another shed or two.   Rather just wrap it at the fields then haul it all home too.   Any ideas?

Wheel loaders

Decided on a wheel loader over a telehandler, just looking for what models everyone uses. I'd be moving 4x5 rounds and 21 bale bundles in the future. I've been leaning towards a 244J Deere, just dont know if it's got enough reach to stack high enough in the barn. Any info is appreciated!

Considering a 3 point rake

I currently rake with a old NH bar rake. It actually works pretty well for me I like that idea of a rotary rake to hopefully not trap as much moisture under the windrow. I started looking around and then remembered that none of my small tractors have remotes. My favorite tractor to rake with is a weird Indian made 30hp that leaves almost no foot print. Has almost no parts availability and I don't think I can add remotes. I have a Ford 3600 with a loader, research I've done shows that because it already has a loader I can only get a remote by doing a quick disconnect line and swapping lines back and forth.

So what do you think about option 3, just run a 3 point rotary rake on my little tractor? Looks like the biggest complaints I see are raking corners and the rake rising over bumps. I was considering the one Agri-Supply sells, $3500 shipped.

Composting manure/mortalities

For 2 years now, I have been composting bedding pack and mortalities. It’s been a learning curve but a worthwhile one nonetheless. Stirring the windrows is the thing I struggle with in a timely manner. Anyone using a windrow turner for composting? I have a cousin who works for U of M research center in Waseca MN, said there are only a handful of people in MN doing composting. More readily used in hogs but they don’t do the manure, just the mortalities. I guess I’m just looking for anyone else
