New Seeding Evaluation?

jeudi 3 mars 2016

Sowed new alfalfa/ orchard grass field last fall. Ended up getting seed in the ground on two dates about a week apart. Both were near or at the end of the recommended Seeding dates for my area. Due to weather, both dates faced some challenges.

Ground was very dry on both dates.

First date got a 1/2" rain right after. Seemed perfect to give a little moisture for emergence. Seeds jumped up and looked good but didn't do much because no more rain.

Second date was a few days after rain, but tillage pretty much dried up any moisture. Seeds just sat there with no emergence.

Stayed dry for darn near 2 months, temps also stayed mild. First Seeding date sprouted good but did not grow at all until we got rain in the middle of November. Second date did not emerge at all until the rain. Then it sprouted but did not grow much after that.

Winter temps ended up being pretty favorable. When it did get real cold seemed like we had a little snow cover most of the time. Both dates seemed to winter better than I dreamed either would, but they both still look like they did near the end of November. One up with just a little growth (tips burned a touch from cold) and one up basically looking like it just sprouted.

Question is how do you evaluate the stand and what can I expect from stands that faced such conditions in the fall?

Thanks for any advice you can give.
