Have put over 2000 bales through this baler and it has never made me cuss until today! I think its because we were baling straw, but thought I'd ask for opinions on here. First, had a few bales tear an end section of net wrap (6-12 inches) and got wrapped around the bottom roller. I have never had that happen before and think it was because tension was loose on the wrap (was at the very end of a roll) plus trash/chaff buildup. Got that straightened out easy enough.
After about 60 bales though the pickup chain started jumping off. Didn't break, just would jump off. I would put it back on, try to get it adjusted right, bale about 10 more bales and it did it again. After jumping off for the third time I decided to call it an evening.
I am hoping that it was just because the straw was getting too dry and brittle to bale and was not feeding well. Started around 1:00 and the first 60 bales went just fine. But by later in the day I could tell it was not feeding as well anymore.
Each time the chain would jump, about a bale before it happened each time I would hear the pickup slip clutch (the one over on the side) catch from a bunch of straw wadded up and not feeding into the chamber. I would back off or slow down to let it clear then finish the bale. Then about halfway through the next bale is when the chain would let loose. Could the slug and slip clutch catching be causing the chain to loosen up just enough that it would eventually jump? Or is my slip clutch not working right to begin with? With the chain off the pickup and side augers spin freely and I can't see where anything is in a bind. The chain itself looks ok to me.
Also, is there any trick to getting that plastic/nylon idler tensioner really tight (see pic)? I can get it barely tight and then it starts to slide and spin and because of it's design then it either continues to overtighten or over loosen the chain. I feel like it only takes a little bit of strain for it to loosen up enough for that chain to jump.
Gonna start baling in the morning with a little dew and see if that helps. If not, I must have something else going on that I will need to look into.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
