Tetraploid Ryegrass

vendredi 6 juillet 2018

Last fall I planted a 4ac field and strips of bare ground along Fescue hay fields where I had trees cut off terraces. I planted Tetraploid rye & Fescue K31 seed..

This spring we had lots of rain and I wasn't able to get hay cut until the seed heads were dried.

The rye had grown so much it all lodged and was brown and turned into straw so, 2 weeks ago I bush hogged it down close to chop up the straw as best I could with the intent of burning the straw and starting over this fall.

We have had a few rain showers sense I chopped it down..

I rode around today and to my surprise the rye is coming up thick where I chopped it close and left the straw.

My question is will the rye continue to grow in the summer heat or will it dye off ?

I knew I was spreading a LOT of seeds but didn't expect rye to grow and the field looks thicker than it did last fall.

Do you think rye will survive the heat and maybe be something to cut later this fall or should I expect to burn it off and start over this fall, just trying to have a plan for late August ..

Thanks, Chris
