gps tracking?

dimanche 30 septembre 2018

Is there any android app for your phone that will show an area that you have either spread fertilizer or sprayed pesticide? Want to spray the whole field without to much overlap or not spraying certain areas. Would like to be able to look at my phone and on small acres be able to see the path of the previous pass.

JD 535 baler, multiple net wrap issues

New to me Deere 535 round baler. I'm having multiple net wrap issues. I have gone over every adjustment in the manual. A new brake pad probably wouldn't hurt but it seemed to be within spec. I made around 8 round bales with it, of those only 3 wrapped on their own, I would have to pull the string sometimes multiple times for the wrap to activate for the other ones. None of them cut and the very last bale I made appears to have net wrap throughout the entire bale. The bale track flashes yellow like it's supposed to while the bale is being made. The manual says when the bale is done the yellow light and will alarm will stay on while wrapping and cutting. For me the yellow light and alarm only come on for about a 1/2 second, then the yellow light turns off. Any ideas? Ditch it and try string wrap?

Old barn still working

A previous poster was discussing a barn he was considering taking down.  I commented about the old barn on my property which has stood for longer than I.  A couple of years ago I added the new pole barn to help with hay storage.  This old dog is trying to learn new tricks so my "helper" is working with me to get pictures up.  I think we did it, but then it isn't posted yet.

GPS Guidance For Small Hay & Cattle Farm

samedi 29 septembre 2018

I know this topic has been discussed before on here, and I have looked at many of the treads, but I am looking for any additional information or opinions about this subject that may be out there.  We have a small hay and cow/calf operation in Western Kentucky  We have been raising beef cattle and our own hay since before I was around, but since my grandfather is no longer with us and Dad is slowing down, more of the decision making is coming down to me.  On top of that I have picked up some custom work.   In order to be more efficient in both time and cost I am looking at adding some form of GPS guidance to the tractor that I spread fertilizer and spray with.

Right now I am just looking at going with a lightbar and staying with the WAAS signal, but in the future if the operation continues to grow, I may look at adding some form of autosteer and a subscription service.  I have looked at both Trimble and Raven products but I'm not sure which specific models I should be looking at.

I would love to hear any input those of you that are currently using some form of guidance would be willing to share.

Thanks

RTV1100 doors hard to close

vendredi 28 septembre 2018

The doors on my RTV have been getting harder and harder to close. I took the time to remove the latch, clean and oiled it, then reinstall. When I reinstalled I left the bolts a little loose and closed the door until it latched. I then snugged the bolts, opened the door and tightened them. You do not have much play but I think they may have moved back a little over time from closing. I have tried to oil them in the past without much luck. Right now I can close the door and with a light pull it will latch. I'll just have to wait and see how long it last before I have to do it again.

New Barn Project

jeudi 27 septembre 2018

This has been my project since early this summer. We had planned on having it done already but all of the rain we’ve been getting this year has kind of kept construction moving slow. The barn is 44x60; 20x60 center and then 12x60 wings. We’re just about getting done now. Just the rest of the doors, battens, louvers up top, trim, and the ridge cap and she’ll be done. Oh, and a couple loads of stone; it’s been too wet to get triaxles in all summer. We’ve shuttled all of the lumber in on running gears from the home farm.

How to bale soybean stubble

I combine with a Gleaner k with no Chopper on the back of any sort and last year did left nice neat rows of bean stubble. I was thinking this year I might try to run my round baler or square baler over it to try and get some bedding for the cattle and sheep. Seems like a decent way to get some. I've never done it before I don't know if when you're harvesting if it's dry enough to Bale or if I need to leave it dry for a few days after? I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks of this and I'm sure it's fairly common in some regions. Any tips?

New Holland 7320 discbine with steel rollers

We are considering trading our discbine the dealer has a NH 7320 with steel rollers, does anyone have one, was wondering if works for alfalfa and light 2nd and 3rd cutting grass. Do the steel rollers condition more aggressively then the rubber rollers? I think this may have been discussed before but any information would help. thanks

Vermeer 504M Baler

Hey everyone, got a quick compatibility question for you.  I've currently got the Accu Bale Plus monitor on my 504M baler.  I have the opportunity to purchase a nearly new (Only 300 some bales showing on monitor) Bale Expert monitor.  Although I'm not currently experiencing any problems with my monitor I'm thinking if this one is a direct plug in replacement (Using same wiring harness etc) for my current monitor it might not hurt to have a spare just in case. Does anyone know if this is a direct swap for my current monitor or not?  thanks in advance for any help

M&W 4500 baler questions

Baler M&W 4500 chain, to me chain looks too loose but can't find any thing that says different.

Oil container for chain up top seems backwards, shouldn't hose be on the bottom for the fluid to flow if not it seems you would need to keep container full 100%?

2014 RTV 1140 Transmission not working

mercredi 26 septembre 2018

So I bought two 2014 RTV 1140 from a company they each had 1,100 hours. One simply will not go into any gear, but the engine runs great and so does the hydraulic dump bed. So I need to get that transmission fixed.....I have no idea what the problem could be.....the shifter is shifting/moving around, but nothing happens.....The local deal said it was making pressure, but didn't know why it would work.

The second unit, I have been using with great success, except it would only go 14mph.... I tried adjusting it like the various instructions say to and changed the oil and filters and it never made any difference....Well, two days ago, it wouldn't go into LOW gear..then the next day it wouldn't go into LOW, HIGH or REVERSE......Leaving me only Medium to operate in...and then it would thump or clunk if you took your foot off the accelerator pedal too quickly.

I took it to the dealer, today and they said the shifter is fine, but that they will have to go into the transmission and the last time they did that it cost the customer $6,000.....Mercy, that seems a little expensive, and they don't know what is wrong with it.

So now I have 2 perfectly good machines, 1,100 hrs that have useless transmissions. My question is what is the most cost effective way of getting these things operational. I need at least one running for chores this winter.

Thanks,
Sam

Case IH 8870

mardi 25 septembre 2018

The farm has an 8870 with a 14 sickle header.  I am so over fighting with the header.  Seems like we can't get anything cut in a day...replacing.guards, sections, overlapping sections, getting scratched by the reel tines fixing guards and sections, and snapping reel shaft.   Can I buy a pull-type discbine and mount it on the swather in place of the sickle head? Can't swing a self propelled discbine and Dad and my amazing wife (the help) are not too keen on going to a pull-type. A pull type hesston auger header needs 75 hp and a 12 foot hesston discbine (1372) needs 85. Would the hydraulic motor that currently drives the auger header have enough poop to run the discbine? I don't need to go 10 miles/hr. I'd be thrilled with 6 - 7.

NH bc5060 compared to BC 5070 hayliner

Currently have a nh570 baler and treated me well. Considering trading up to a new baler. The bc 5060 is $5500 less than I can get a bc5070 hayliner for. Dealer says they aren’t comparable balers. Capacity, durability, longevity etc. I’m a part time farmer that makes 10-12k bales a year... I take extremely good care of my equipment, plan to make it last. Is the 5070 haylinerthat much better baler and what I need?

Is this normal

My heifer is bred, well I think she is, but she has almost always had a "fat" area around her tail..

She is 3yrs old...

It looks like the older she gets the bigger it gets. is this a normal thing..

I have looked at other cows around here and they don't seen to have the same fat tail area, but then again mine is a bit plumper than the ones I've looked at..

Thoughts on cow hay

lundi 24 septembre 2018

I have 15 acres of good coastal baling for horses. I have about 20 acres of crop land was thinking about options for annual on it for cows. Looking for any recommendation or thoughts on cow hay. Would want to bale it in round bales with net on it and not stored under shelter. Know not the best but don't think would have shelter for new all it would produce.

We do not have any dairy in our area.

A second question here is how much does a mower conditioner with tedder, speed up hay drying compared to mower and tedder only.

Were you affected by Hurricane Florence?

If you were affected by Hurricane Florence mind giving us an update?

My area saw winds of somewhere about 50 mph and about 15 inches of rain the Friday of it's land fall. I have 10 acres of coastal that may not get last cutting of. But I think from what I have seen most crops have faired rather well. Now we are being hit with major flooding from the massive rains in NC coming down river and know the crops in those flood waters will probably be total loss.

Some areas of NC might not be able to even know how bad they are for a while.

AgCam or Cab Cam

So brought the grain cart home today from the other farm, the Cab Cam monitor powers up but has a dead screen, absolutely nothing when powered up or menu buttons are used.

So the question is this, is one much superior to the other? More importantly have you ever had an Ag Cam then went to Cab Cam or vice versa and found one superior to the other?

I have no issues filling trucks with it, have one camera on the end of the grain cart auger, however have had help complain about the Cab Cam, personally I know its because they never adjust the screen  brightness for the time of day.

With the awesome profit margins this year for grain I wasn’t really looking to spend the money on a different system, but if it saves me from having to shovel a mess up now and then so be it.

Frosty Hay...

dimanche 23 septembre 2018

Scouting my fields today and with all the rain we have had and are still getting, it’s going to need clipped again - sometime.

IMHO, there’s not grass enough grass yet for a cutting, by the time frosts start coming, it will. Enough perhaps to make some squares.

I know it’s not good to cut just before a killing frost, but what are the best practices for post frosts?

I need to do some digging, but I’m sure I’ve read that some folks have been pretty much forced to make hay long after it turns colder and frosts come regular - out into late October, into November and early December.

What I think I remember is once cold weather sets in and frosts begin, the hay (grass hay) has figured out winter is coming and has stored up nutrients into the roots and you’re good to go cutting. I also remember some comments about really soft hay that has had a frost and dry down isn’t so bad with low fall humidity.

Sooooo - thoughts on post frost haying?

Thanks!
Bill

Frosty Hay...

Awful year on new KBG/OG field/pasture

Quick history.

Purchased 85ac of SB/Corn with remote history of tobacco (uncertain how long ago).

Planed Annual rye spring 2017 which did well everywhere. Disced and prepped all fields and put in alfalfa/OG on 20ac, Timothy on 10ac, and KBG/OG on about 40ac. All put in last fall.

Nothing at all did well.

Reason for this particular post is 2fold. The Timothy and the KBG/OG.

The Timothy really did nothing at all. I had quite a bit of volunteer rye and very little Timothy. Now, I have weeds, perhaps some Timothy, and posts of crabgrass. I don’t know whether it would be best to leave it alone, spray it with Roundup in early spring and replant or just drill into it this fall, or spray and drill this fall (although it’s getting late in the year and it will be wet for at least a week it looks like). I’m a little hesitant to roundup this fall because of ground cover for winter. So I Lena towards either drilling into it now or waiting on everything until spring.

And in my KBG/OG... I have some areas that the OG did OK, but I have at least 20ac that almost nothing grew. And these have always been treated exactly the same. I think I might just mow everything as short as I can, and NT 2 directions. I was thinking mixed none coated seed 10/10lbs KBG Ginger/HarveStar. I’d say some areas have 20% coverage and some 50% coverage currently. Lots of weeds including a bumper crop of foxtail and crabgrass this year.

I’ve contacted my Extension office several times this year and they have no idea why things are so bad on these fields. Given the foxtail, the thought was nutritive values being off, but soil samples show them right where they should be in all areas.

I’m wanting the KBG/OG for horse pasture next year, and wanted to have a good stand before I put in fences. I have a last ‘easy chance’ to do something this fall otherwise, I’m going to be doing this around fences which is always harder.

Any thoughts on whether to spray this fall and winter and drill again early spring or drill now, and go to war with weeds in the spring?

I’m at a loss, and the folks in the know seem to be right there with me.

Awful year on new KBG/OG field/pasture

Drilling orchard grass into 1yo alfalfa

I put in 20ac of alfalfa/Orchard mix last fall. Neither did well this year, and everyone thinks it was because of such a wet fall/winter/spring here. Nothing did well according to those around the area.

I have some weak areas that I’d like to fill in, with about 50% of the alfalfa I’d expect to be there. Since I can’t put in more alfalfa into the stand, I thought I’d add more Orchard grass to fill in as much as possible.

The guy who has been doing my hay is an old guy with a lot of experience. He said I shouldn’t use a NT drill to put in the Orchard grass because it will tear up too many crowns in established alfalfa stand. He recommended using a regular drill with the thinking it wouldn’t have the weight and pressure to tear up the year old established ‘crowns’.

I don’t have access to a regular drill. I can get NT drill through our county share program.

Checking humity in the windrow

samedi 22 septembre 2018

I have a few questions about this,Hay Wilson talked about it and he does it,I bought a meter for reading humity at the hardware store and put it in the windrow just above the ground and made sure it was covered from the sun had to put a stick up to find where I put it,I think he said any reading under 65 the hay is dry enough to bale and have put in windrows that are very green and it might get to about 75 and always let it set there for about 20 minutes or so,am I doing this right and am I using the correct meter just seems like it wasnt working very accurate, can somebody educate me on this ? This is on bermuda grass in east texas where we have high humity. Thanks

Cattle Squeeze Chute with right side controls

I am really thinking about making my one barn into where I will handle cattle and the one problem I have is where the exit is. There is a wall there and the way the door is and whatnot you cannot operate a chute from that side. Most chutes have the controls on the left side, that is, if you are facing the way the cow is while it is in the chute the controls are on its left.

I need one that has them on the right side. Anyone know of any? I am not looking for some big hydraulic thing, just a good manual one that isn’t over 5k if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone that restores barns in Southeast Ohio?

This is probably a shot in the dark but figured I would try anyway. My wife and I bought this farm last fall and I am working on getting it cleaned up and working in better shape than we bought it.

I have an older 70x30 barn that is in rough shape. It is still standing, doesn’t appear to be leaning (to my eye), but the metal roof has come off in a few places and has been like that for a few years. A lot of the timber looks to be fine with a few places questionable.

I plan to tear it down and build a hay shed with a little section attached to run cattle through. But, I thought if someone who knew what they were doing looked at it and said it is salvageable and could be done for around what it would cost for me to get it tore down and hauled away and the new building cost, I would consider it.

If the previous owner put s roof on it when it started coming off I would t be tearing it down. It is an older barn with hewn beams and is pegged. Does anyone know of anyone that does this type of thing in Southeastern Ohio? I am checking around but coming up empty so far.

Reiff Farm Service - Shippensburg, PA

vendredi 21 septembre 2018

Earlier this year, someone created a post asking about this dealership. I didn't reply at that time as I didn't have anything to add.  I do now.

I bought a brand-new Woods bat-wing mower from Reiff in late spring.  The second time I went to use the mower - which was less than 90 days from the time of purchase - one of the tires was flat.  Upon closer inspection, I discovered that all four tires have severe dry-rot (see photos).  I bought this mower with used tires and I understand that there's some risk on my part but I think it's reasonable to expect the tires to last for a season to two - at least.

I called Reiff and Elam told me there's no warranty on the tires.  I then called out to the Woods factory in Illinois. The person I spoke to asked to the mower's serial number.   I read it to him from the sales receipt and he put me on hold for a minute.  When he can back on the phone, he said that unit left their factory with rims only.  In other words, the dealer provided the tires.

When purchasing a new piece of equipment with used tires, one would think an effort would be made to find tires that are still in reasonably good condition.  Obviously, Reiff installed the cheapest tires they could find.  Needless to say, I will never do business with them again.

My local tire shop is currently installing 4 new tires which gave me the chance to take the attached photos.

Rent my Bull

Friend of mine sold me his bull a year or so ago, he sold all his cows at that time. Well now he has moved down the road to a better place and bought 6 angus heifers. He texted me wanting to rent the bull for 2-3 months, my question is I have never done it before and should I at a certain rental fee or just allow it since he is a friend? Wife said rent it as I am always allowing folks to use my stuff for free, getting something out of it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Maybe a stupid question/idea

mercredi 19 septembre 2018

So my sheep waste hay like no other. Not really a surprise to anyone. I do feed out of a round bale feeder that I welded extra bars every 7in. I've fed chopped hay in the past and they don't seem to waste anything. I think it's because it's smaller they don't have to pull out long stem and chew on it as much. So my question is if I can cut and rake hay, instead of baling it could I in theory run a chopper over it and blow it in to a chopper wagon dry? Then I'd just use a elevator to fill the gravity feeder.

Maybe a stupid question/idea

Vermeer 605H bale tension cylinder

Hi everyone . Was going to get 605H out to bale some straw but had stopped using some time ago
As was making loose bales . I think that I had believed the cylinder that provides bale tension required recharging . I had looked in manual but as I can recall couldn’t make sense of instructions to do that and now can’t find manual at all . Does anyone know this procedure ? Could something else be causing loose bales ? Any comments helpful . Thank you

Price of Urea

I ordered some Urea (pellet) today so I can spread it tomorrow when I am off.   When I called the local co-op they told me that it had went up $32 since last week and it is now $432/ton.  Inquiring to see what others are paying for it and if there has been such an increase for you to.  Wondering if something has happened that is causing it to jump up.

Second cutting dilema

Well, here I am, 1/4 of the way into second cutting and nothing but rain, rain, rain.

Someone told me the area I live in "The Delaware Valley" has seen 50" so far this year. The big city, Philadelphia has its greatest rainfall in history, and the year still has 3&1/2 months to go!

Fields are mostly mud. I just saw a bigger operator than me break out the 15' mower and begin cutting his fields-calling it quits. I kind of take my cues from him sometimes.

I'm not a quitter, but beginning to wonder...is second cutting going to happen? I've seen short windows of beautiful dry weather in October, but next 10 days are average for making hay at best.

Any opinions?

Different Dusty Hay Question...

I’ve got about 25 or 30 square bales of hay in a shelter, open on the ends. When this hay was baled, it was very dry, it was almost straw - could have gone up a day earlier. Bale chamber moisture meter read 11-12% all day. These are very tight bales, but light - again from being so dry. Nothing marginal about the hay or field when baled that would point to dust. This batch, I can’t remember if I used impellers or rollers (which machine), but the hay was conditioned. First cut Timothy.

That was June, fast forward to today and a few bales show a bit of fine white dust if you slap one. Cut it open, nothing. Shake the hay - nothing. Slap the side down against other bales, nothing. Slap the free air side of the bale, a little dust.

While this hay was dry, I don’t think this is mechanical dust from baling, I think it’s mold dust.

I’m thinking with all the rain, high humidity we’ve had, along with cool nights and heavy dews, these bales have attracted humidity from the heavy moisture laden air and made a little surface dust.

Anyone experienced surface mold dust on their bales, but all else was fine?

Thanks!
Bill

Does your tractor/cutter do this on turns?

Had the hay cut yesterday by a guy who does it for a neighbor.  Fastest I've ever seen someone drive a tractor.  Did my 20 in about 3 hours.  We had a lot of rain last week too, so I thought that might be it.  I don't get these turning ruts with my tractor.  I didn't know if this was normal or not with a bigger tractor.  Looks like places that will attract weeds.

Deworm-pour on vs injection

Don't have a corral/squeeze chute, have only 6-7 cows. Got a trailer now and can heard them into it 2-3 times a year but wonder which is easier and more effective, pour on or injections. Either way I need to go buy the applicator. My neighbor friend did it last time with an injection gun (he has a corral and several hundred cows so injection is his way) we just did it in a trailer and done in 5 minutes. He hung from the roof area and did it, didn't change needles and not sure if that is correct or should it be changed for it cow (I am a nurse so I would have changed the needle)

I got the mineral granular from a bag that I give them for flies, heard to give the large (200#) protein buckets to them during the springs, summer?

I think I hit it all. Newbie has a lot to learn but I do like messing with them, darn bull is so gentle he likes his head and neck to be rubbed, others slowly getting use to me. My horses think they are cows, hang out and lay with them.

Krone Tedder Wheels Won't Run Straight

mardi 18 septembre 2018

Hello everybody and hope all is well.  I picked up a 2004 Krone 5.50/4x7t four basket tedder last week and had the chance to use it for the first time today.  Everything works fine with it, except the wheels won't run straight....When being pulled the thing yaws to the left and right.

This tedder has a feature that allows the wheels to be angled to the left or right (to clear field boundaries according the manual). I have the angling lever set so the wheels run straight, but as you travel down the field, the wheels swivel to the left and right which causes the tedder to swing to the left and right.  I've checked to see if there is a way to lock the wheels in the straight position, but have had no joy.

Has anybody else ever encountered this problem?  Any idea on how to remedy it?  Could it be something as simple as tire pressure being too high?  (I'll have to test that theory tomorrow).

Thanks,

Chris

Are there any companies that build a solid stand seeder other than Brillion.  I have been looking for one around here but I am having trouble finding a Brillion, so I am looking for other options.  I will be seeding orchard grass, timothy mix for hay and also seeding several small pastures that will be sprayed and worked up.

Thanks

Parts prices at local dealer :) Nice surprise

I stopped in at local dealer today to pickup a part I had ordered. It is a temp sensor $28 cdn ($21.59 usd) thought that was a good deal since it is $26.58 usd at another popular online dealer.

So while I was there I inquired about rtv 1100 maintenance kit 77700-01820. It is $100 cdn ($77 usd). I ordered it. At another popular online dealer it is $97.79 USD. I also asked about 5 gallon pails of Super udt2 and they said it is $100 cdn ($77 USD) at another popular online dealer it is $103.12 USD.

Sure seems like some good prices!

Bermuda Cutting

How many of you Bermuda guys cut on a schedule regardless of growth and how many just cut when it looks good?  I cut a field today that was 45 days old.  It was fertilized but not much rain until the last 7 days.  I was wondering if I should have waited another week to let the grass take advantage of the late moisture?

John Deere 458 round baler problem

lundi 17 septembre 2018

Idler sprocket on the upper roll drive chain has come off chain and bent up at a 90 degree angle.  How in the hell did this happen?  Baler just came back from dealer and had all new sprockets put on.

Best Windrow Of The Year

The last one.  Finished hay for the year yesterday and it sure feels good to be done.  Sure was a good year for putting up hay.  Not a single bale of rained on hay this year.  Cant remember the last time that happened.  From past experience next year will be payback time.

Implement lift arm pins

I am having issue with the pins where the 3 pth implement pins run through the balls on the lift arms. This is a JD 5525 with cat 1 and 2 balls in the lift arms. I normally run my stabilizers not jammed tight but snug. This has happened with two implements which are both cat 2 and have run them both on a Kubota M6800 which has Cat 2 balls in the lift arms with same type of stabilizers the sliding metal ones.

First happened with a boom mower with a flail head on it, the pin coming out the left lift arm allowing the cutter head to drop swinging the cutter frame into the left rear tire. Not the cutting head but the frame. I was using the regular hitch pin like used with a trailer pin but I always push them in all the way and not in the little first place some people will leave them. I replaced the pin and ran cutter for maybe another hour ok. But the next time I used it was using same type of pins and after cutting with it say 15 minutes checked and they were coming out. One had just dropped when I checked it. I went to the lynch pins with the spring circle that you flip open to install or remove and did not have another issue with the boom mower. Now the boom mower was being used to cut high limbs, under trees and all kind of angles. So the connections were being pushed.

Now have used subsoiler on the same tractor with the lynch pins and it was in really hard dirt with a lot of vibration due to hardpan. It was used in this for say 10 hours with last few hours nephew running it. When it got back to me the lynch pins were missing. I had him to cut around tree line at my house and he hit a root that popped shear bolt and it was very loud. I would not be suprised if it shook the subsoiler as it also twisted the shank the bolt sheared on. I can believe it is possible one of the lynch pins sheared with the subsoiler jumping the way it hit the stump but hard to believe it could have sheared both.

The tractor in both cases was running very low ground speed.  Have come to the thought need to get "LOCKS" with shanks that would be long enough to clear to be fully certain vibration and other movement was not loosing the pins.  There has to be something I am missing. Maybe in the times I have used a 3 pth implement not aware ever dropped an implement or loss more than one pin or two and that on a selection of tractors. Have wondered it I need to place a flat washer between pin and the lift arm.  Thanks for your help

Loose bales.

Since I have had my baler it seems the last 6 inches of the bale is not as tight. The rest of the bale is very tight to where you can even think of sticking your finger into it even a half inch. But the last 6 inches or so is loose enough you can get 4 fingers in about 3 to 4 inches. This is with netwrap (vermeer) with 3.5 wraps. I onow in the manual it says the windows on the net should be stretching but not breaking and it seems like it is going on tight but maybe i need to up the brake setting. This is on a vermeer 6650. I dont know if i should just keep what i am doing before i go messing with it. Baled about 800 bales so far this year and not have one issue with it at all, no missed bales being wrapped.
Will be doing a big last cutting in a few weeks and would like to get the bales super tight all the way to the end. I am packing the bales good on the ends and have good shape to the bales. Any ideas?
Have never tryed the string on this baler but from what i have seen (first baler for me) string seems to keep the last few inches tighter. This is from my observations of custom balers from years before.

Agratronix Bht-2 and HT-PRO inconsistent readings

samedi 15 septembre 2018

I am baling Bermuda hay and I was not 100% sure that my bht-2 was reading correct seamed to read lower then what it was at so I bought a HT-PRO to have also and now I am more confused then ever as one seams to read high and one seams to read low. I have version 1.3 on my Bht-2 and have calbrated my Ht-pro. Is this common and what do you do as I know I can Ajjust the bht-2 but how do I know what one is right. For you guys baling Bermuda hay in small squares what it the highest and lowest moisture you bale at.

hay not drying, what's my next step

vendredi 14 septembre 2018

I mowed a field Wed afternoon around 1 pm. It was full sun and about 78 degrees. Tedded it a few hours later and got full coverage.

Thursday was cloudy and mid-70's.

Today was sunny with some clouds, 78-80 degrees, 53% humidity, no wind. I raked the field at 3 pm. Started baling at 4:30, and tested the first few bales, I was getting 18-20+% (small squares). I moved to the center of the field where the hay would always get full sun and tested some more with the same moisture.  The hay felt dry on the ground but when we were breaking the bales apart to respread out you could indeed tell they felt a little damp.

They are pretty good sized windrows. I left the hay in rotary-raked windrows. I debated tedding them back out or leaving them as is. I left them. Everbody fauns about how well rotary raked windrows are still supposed to dry.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 83 degrees and full sun.  Sun will be the same but even hotter, 86 degrees. After dew is gone, should I re-ted the rows back out or leave them as windrows?  Will I get sufficient drying in the rotary windrows? The hay inside shouldn't dew I wouldn't think, but then it's not getting as much sun either.

Seems like a lot of people around here are having problems with hay getting dry enough.

Cattle Gate Auto Latches

jeudi 13 septembre 2018

I need to upgrade some of my cattle handling facilities to make it easier to sort and handle cattle as a one man show.  Traditionally we had a lot of gates that have the short stub tube sticking out that catches on an auto  latch. For all you locals, its the Paul B Zimmerman style. These work well but the auto latches are a little expensive. The upside is that stub tube is around 2" dia, so its about impossible to bend it.

Does anyone have any experience with the "slam latches". Basically its a tube with a 3/4" or 1" shaft that's spring loaded. The shaft catches in a plate with a slot in it that's bolted or welded to a post? These latches are much cheaper, however I wonder how strong they are. I could see a cow in a confined area backing up into one of these gates and bending the 3/4" or 1" shaft. Anyone have any experience?

mercredi 12 septembre 2018

No one has an ideas why the hst is hesitating on my 2016 x1100c??? like i said push the pedal down (doesnt matter if its a 1/4" or all the way down) it takes a second for the trans to move the wheels? Is there a relief valve that controls this?? Charge pressure??? Any pics where this is located??? this is not normal operation my 04 did not have this issue and neither do the new ones at the dealer. Any help would be great

Found minor defect on 2016 X900

Spent quite a bit of time on dust logging roads in BC this year, hauled the kubota home a few days ago, used the air hose to blow off a summers worth of dust, when I raised the bed, I noticed the transmission dipstick had dust stuck to it "oil" the plastic dipstick was loose, matter of fact it can't be securely tightened down, seems to be 1/2 stripped, only person to touch it was Kubota shop that did a service on it last year. I used a plastic tie to hold it from coming loose. maybe everyone should look at theirs. a plastic dipstick on a 11,000 $ is mickey mouse in my book

Glow plugs, engine fan, and temperature gauge are all not working on 1100. Fan is currently hooked up to run when key is in on position with a couple extra wires ran by previous owner. I’m thinking maybe temperature sensor switch could be causing all these issues?

Kuhn FC300 Cutter bar rebuild

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a Kuhn FC300. I bought it knowing a gear was chipped in the cutter bar. i think the best bet would be to pull apart the entire bar and check all gears and bearings.

first question is should i leave the cutter bar attached or is it fairly easy to drop the entire bar off the frame. on the side away from the tongue i see a large pin that you drive out and i think will allow that side to drop. i can't seem to see how everything is attached at the gear box side. If dropping it all isn't the best route thats fine. i was just going to try and bring it all in my garage since the mower won't fit through the door.

Also while i'm into the cutter bar is there anything else i should look at and think about replacing while i'm in there. meaning if the gears are fine should i consider pressing the bearings off them and just putting in new bearings?

some of the tarps are pretty torn is there anywhere to get an OEM tarp for it? I went to Kuhn site and couldn't find anything on them in the parts breakout.

Last question, right now it's a manual fold, i have a few cylinders i just need to get rebuilt. can anyone tell me roughly what length they should be?

Thank you,

Chad

Second remote install for a DK40SE Cab HST.

lundi 10 septembre 2018

This spring I ordered top and tilt hydraulics from MtnViewRanch and purchased the 2nd remote kit from my DK40SE.

As my hydraulic delivery date nears I'm feeling the need to get this second remote installed.

Anybody who has done this and have any pointers?

My plan is to go visit the shop I bought everything at and ask this same question of the mechanic. He's a great guy and already told me I could do it myself. Hopefully I'll review the shop manual and snap photos of the relevant pages. I really wish I could buy the Shop Manual in PDF version someplace, I love those for my motorcycles.

When I bought the kit I looked over the parts. The unexpected things:

1. The thick plate containing the valve didn't seem to have obvious gaskets.
2. They provided two different length handles, but only one rubber boot and ball.
3. Also seemed to provide lines to the rear for both remotes (maybe I just forgot about the return?)

Given this was a second remote kit it seemed odd to provide both handles and extra lines. Some of this may be revealed when I'm elbow deep in the job. I've held off starting because I'm lazy AND because I fear of a long force interruption from something like a damaged and/or missing gasket(s).

Would love to hear from someone who's been there done it, and remembers mistakes that I could avoid.

Thanks in advance.

Coast Plug for X-900 Didn't work

So FYI, I put in the $80 coast plug today and have noticed no discernable difference in the amount of jarring I get on deceleration. Whiplash city still.

That said, 2 questions for the group.

The original plug had no oil on it, was actually kinda rusty (will get a couple of pix shortly). Is this correct?

I am mulling over sending this to our local Kubota dealer to have him check the settings on the trans. First, what sort of questions do I ask to see if he actually knows what he is doing (not a lot of Kubotas in our area but we are quite hilly).

Second, I have some hydraulic knowledge. Is this something we can do ourselves?

Quick 'How To' for wrapping round bales for silage?

With the wet weather we've been having and time slipping away to get 2nd cutting done, I'm actually wondering about mowing and baling my 2nd cutting for silage bales instead of dry hay.  My neighbor has a baler and wrapper that he uses for his stuff, but I could probably also use my own round baler as it is a silage baler and would give me netwrap instead of twine.  My problem is, I know virtually nothing about how to properly bales/wrap hay for silage.  Some of the questions that I already have are:

1) What moisture should I bale the hay at?

2) My fixed chamber baler (Claas 62S) makes 4x5 bales.  Will these be too big?  Will the fixed chamber make a good bale in wetter hay?

3) I understand that things vary by location, but what is the market like for these bales?  I'm assuming I'll be talking to dairy/beef producers, correct?

4) What is the best way to price these (by ton or bale)?  Also, what are prices like?

5) The only way I have to handle round bales are bale spears on the loader and 3pt hitch.  Can I just patch the holes these put in the wrap with tape?

As with everything new, I'm sure there are questions that I don't even know to ask, so feel free to educate me.  I'm not totally sure I will do this, but I hate to see forage on the field not being harvested... especially fields that I spread fertilizer on earlier this summer!

Thanks in advance, Josh

Trouble shooting Knotter on Krone baler

Drilling before a hurricane

I had a rental drill reserved for the end of this week to Monday. I'm going to cancel that slot due to a hurricane that current models show the eye hitting me.

If I by chance I can get the drill for tomorrow or Tuesday, would I be okay with grass seed staying in the ground? Or would I be better off after the carnage? I predict heavy rains for 3-4 days.

Foxtail and Prowl 2018...

First “work around” post of course went into the wrong section... Here is is again...

Recently we clipped our fields and took with it most any foxtail heads, however 3 weeks later, there’s more foxtail than ever!

Anyone had real success using Prowl to control foxtail? What is your application schedule, ie early spring and after each cutting? Did you tank mix any other herbicides with it? What kind of residual does it have and if there’s a residual, how long does it last? Let’s say a second cut August first, are you going to be able to overseed in September?

Any devastating effects on Timothy?

Thanks!
Bill

JD 535, gate latches open too far

New to me via auction JD 535 round baler. So far I just have the operators manuals for it. Starting to go through all the grease points, adjustments, etc... The gate latches are way out of adjustment. The manual says no bigger than an 1/8th of inch gap. These appear to be pushing 1". Possibly related but I'm not getting a ready/gate latched light on the bale trak either. Although the gate closed sensors appear to be aligned correctly. I do plan on actually measuring them per the manual but just eyeballing them, they seem to be in the correct spot. The hydraulic cylinders on the rear for the door do appear to be closed all the way.

Gate latches are both about this far

New holland 650 declutch

mercredi 5 septembre 2018

I recently purchas ed d a NH 650 with 8k bales thru it. I just finished my first 70 rolls and wanted to see what I was doing wrong. When I open the gate the declutch is working fine, however when I close it, it sounds like the machine is coming apart. The manual said to leave the pto engaged so I do that but have issues with the belts starting again and the worst chatter coming from the chains like something is wrong. When that happens I ultimately back the pto way down and sometimes completely off and then finesse it to make the belts run again. Am I doing something wrong or is there and adjustment for the declutch/ is it just bad?
Al'so the net wrap actuator has not been used. I took it off and cleaned it and it works however it seems to be unable to push the duck bill and chatter like its bound up. Is it bad as well? I took it apart and cleaned it and everything appears fine on the inside, is it possible to rebuild or am I stuck buying a new one?

Tha k you in advance for the help

New holland 650 declutch

Good evening all,
I just purchased a nh650 with 8k bales thru it. I finished bailing my first 70 rolls and wanted to see what I was doing wrong. When I open the gate the declutch disengages perfectly, when I bring the gate back down it feels like the machine is coming apart and chatters horribly, sometimes not engaging the belts at all till i back the pto way down and finesse it. The manual said to release bales with the pto engaged so I thought I was doing the right thing..... is there an adjustment or something?
Also the net wrap actuator seems to not have enough power to push the duck bill, I took it apart and cleaned it (the prior owner was obviously only running string), it works fine but rattles like it's in a bind and unable to do its job. Is it time for a new one, or is there a way to rebuild? All the insides brushes etc looked fine.....
Thanks in advance.

Vermeer tedders

So trying to make hay, and I do mean trying as it aint drying.

Tedded it for the sixth time today, even after all those passes I notice the wettest still finds its way to the bottom which places it on moist ground.

So the question is this, do the TE series of Vermeer tedders with the hook tines really do a better job of getting  the wet stuff to stay on top?

One thing I did notice, my NH169 covers 22 1/2 foot while the TE250 covers 25 foot, that would place rotors 1/2 and 5/6 over the rows better so it might spread more evenly.

Yellow foxtail for Hay? or?

Ok, I have lots of it in my 2nd cutting. I don't like it for horse hay. I have considered topping it with a bat wing and then letting the heads hit the ground with wind and rain before baling, or baling for goat/ cattle hay, or just mowing. I am open to suggestions. Looking around the neighborhood, I am not alone with this situation.
