NH Haybine greasing help??

jeudi 31 octobre 2019

Hi all

Can anyone tell me if there is a grease point in the universal joint on the pto shaft about 4 inches in front of the slip clutch? (This is where the pto shaft goes into the 1st gearbox)

And if so how in the heck can you grease it. Access wise I mean.

I bought the machine new in 1991 and the operators manual mentions no grease point, only the tongue roller about another 6 inches more forward.

Then I was looking at the parts book and there I noticed a PTO uni joint in there, the same sort of joint that there are 2 of on the pto shaft at the tractor end (and which you can grease - and are supposed to every 8 hours)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

TIA

Dave

I may be an idiot.....but

I took my wife's advice and jumped on the millennial bandwagon and started a YouTube channel.  To caveat my last statement I'm far from a millennial, though I did marry into that generation.  I have no idea what I'm doing or where its going but wanted to share with you all, as its based on our small farm and what we do to make it work.

I come from a long line of farmers.  Our home place was settled in the 1790's and still in the family thanks to the good lord.  Right now there's some hay cutting and some disc mower repairing going on.  If you want a good laugh at some redneck that doesn't know what he's doing, give it a watch.  I've learned a lot from Hay Talk and the folks on here and thought It might be a good place to introduce my shenanigans.   I did this to try and show people you don't have to have a bunch of money to do what we love to do, no matter the size of your operations your just like everyone else, pants on one leg at a time.

Deciphering Vermeer Model Numbers

I am thinking about getting in the market for a used Vermeer baler to upgrade my existing 504SI.It has gotten to be a confusing mix of Models and Letters. I will stay with a Vermeeer because of the service options I have local, and a 504 or possibly a 604 size baler. I am going to list what I have found so far. I would appreciate everyone's feedback on my comments and the good/bad on the models/letters.

  • Vermeer had not completely worked out Net wrap on I or L series balers and it is a real PITA.

  • As near as I can tell a I/SI with equal fill/ auto tie and an XL baler is the same baler. The difference is the updated Accu bale monitor.

  • The Rebel series is a light duty, low usage baler with smaller rollers, bearings, chains & sprockets. Bale count above  5k or so is a big issue.

  • Strangely J and K balers are older than I balers?

  • L series balers have gates problems not great balers?

  • M series are very good balers? Any known pros/cons?

  • N series are good balers? Not quite as heavy as a M?

  • R series have not been around long enough to grade?

  • Ranchers series are very good higher production balers with heavier chain/sprockets?

  • Pro series I know nothing about except the are Welger painted yellow? Is this a bad thing? I doubt my dealer could service them.

I see a lot of M's for sale. Do you think this is a sign that there are a lot of them out there, they are at the end of their life cycle, or are the a POS?

Any advise on model/series you would suggest and more importantly which one's to stay away from is much appreciated.

Cant' hold out any longer... need to start spraying for weeds.

mardi 29 octobre 2019

So I've held out as long as I can, but I admit it's time to start spraying for weeds in my hay.  There are two main problem weeds that I am dealing with, horse nettle and knapweed.  I know my neighbors field is where the knapweed is coming from, but I'm not sure where the horse nettle came from.  I don't want to just refit/reseed the fields as I'm sure that won't help too much.. just prolong the problem.

I do have a 3pt hitch sprayer, but I do not have a pesticide license.  Whatever I use also has to be OK to use on grass/timothy hay fields.  I know I'll probably kill all the broad leaf plants that I don't mind (like birdsfoot), but I'm OK with that if it means I get rid of the bad stuff.  What sprays would work in my situation?  When would be the best time to apply them?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Need parts for Massey Ferguson 20 hay rake

New member here.

I need parts for an old MF20 hay rake.  I just dug this thing out of the woods from where it was left back in the mid 1980's.  I remember using it as a youth when we bailed peanut hay.

The entire PTO assembly is missing, the wheels are rotted and the rims are in bad shape, lots of the teeth are bent, the belt obviously is trash.  Other than that, it looks to be operational.

My questions are:

1) Is it worth the time and money to get it functional?

2) Assuming that it's worth it, where do I get the parts?

3) If it's not worth it, is there a place online I can sell it so that someone else can part it out for their operation?

Thanks in advance

Harry

Hustler bale unroller

lundi 28 octobre 2019

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with a Hustler SL450X unroller looking to unroll my round bales into small square baler for baling. Otherwise does any one recommend any other brand for doing so. I am looking for a new or used unit. Thanks for any input.

Has anyone seen or have a Springfield/ascot accumulator? I saw on on you tube but can't seem to find any info on them. I also looked at the Jaden unit made in Australia and like the way it works. Any info will be appreciated.

Mice In Pole Barn

Hoping someone on this forum had found a way to keep these little buggers out of your barn.

A few weeks ago, my Wife fired up the RTV and a field mouse ran up her leg and under the dash. After making all the racket and commotion we could, the mouse did not show his mug again. We then towed the vehicle 130 miles to the dealer for service.

I immediately put down large sticky traps.

When we arrived this weekend, one mouse was KIA in the trap. The other traps were clean.

I got on the tractor to back it out and as soon as I fired it up, two mice shot out from under the hood and oddly, instead of running for the hills, they ran to the back of the barn. More traps deployed.

My Wife said she had read if you open the hood on your equipment, the mice might stay out of it. So I dutifully raised the hoods on everything including the 9N which had mouse nuggets on the batter. GRRRRRRR

Please tell me that someone on this forum has a trick for keeping this guys from eating your wiring. We have two Aussies but they are not always with us at the farm so poison wasn't my first choice.

I feel so dirty.

Thanks

Baler knife ground too short?

dimanche 27 octobre 2019

Had the knives in my NH 417 small square baler sharpened at an industrial knife shop. They had a few reasonable sized dings in them and I think they have taken too much off in order to get the edge back as the stationary knife is now recessed back from the feed chamber wall a touch when its installed, the edge is just proud of the wall but I'm thinking this isnt going to work too well.

Anyone know how much can be ground off the knives before they are too short to use? Looks I'll order some new knives but would be good to know for next time.

1700 feet of trench

I have 1700 ft of trench I need to dig, the water line needs to be 18" + deep.  The water line will be running down the middle of a dirt road that is our driveway. It is not flat, goes up a hill and back down so the center of the drive is better so I can keep the crown of the road in tact so rain water doesn't cause a ditch vs digging the trench on the side of the drive, well that's my thoughts anyway..

Instead of renting a walk behind trencher I figure I can come up with something tractor mounted with some advice from you folks..

The heaviest and strongest tractor I have is my JD 2030, I have a heavy subsoiler and a old 2 blade turn plow.  I figure if I make a couple passes with the subsoiler to loosen the rock hard red clay then use the turn plow with 1 blade removed and a couple passes I could trench a path deep enough for the water line..

What ya think so far ??

As for the water line, plan is to stare at the tap with 2" black roll plastic to the top of the hill, maybe 1/3 the distance , then neck down to 1/2" then a few hundred feet from the house drop to 1"  ...

I don't have a middle buster but maybe it would be a good idea to get one??

So, I know someone here has done something similar, what can I do to make this a smooth process without renting something ??

Pic is of the driveway, it doesn't show how steep both sides are but you can see the distance and it's almost a straight run, driveway is at the top of the pic to the house..

Thanks, Chris

Vermeer 504I Spring Tension

samedi 26 octobre 2019

I have a Vermeer 504SI I have been running and improving for 2 years. During 2nd cutting a tension spring broke and had to finish the hay with less than desired  results. It was my hay and it went in the barn so not a huge deal.

When I replaced the spring I also replaced the adjusting bolts/nuts on both sides. I set the bolts to the manual recommended 5 3/8" (if memory serves) but the belts were too loose. I went down to 4 1/2" and it baled ok but I would like the bales to be tighter.

I am concerned that if I keep shortening the adjusting bolts it will put too much strain on the springs when the bale is near full/full or the gate opens and will break the springs too soon. Does this make sense? What else can I do to improve bale density?

I removed the belts back in the spring and re-laced. The belts are 421 1/2" and a new belt is 423".

Compressed Bales to two string, 3 string

Hey everyone,

Do do ya'll know if hay buyers and distributors are able to take compressed bales (16x32x22) and (16x17x22) from large squares and divide them up or re-string them to make 2 string or three string bales for a market that prefers those after they've been shipped.

Thanks.

Does anyone know the differences between the Massey Ferguson 1339 disc mower and M1359?

I do know that it was manufactured from 2004 to 2006. I was wondering if there are cutter bar differences or gearbox differences or are almost all parts interchangeable between the two?

Gleaner K chaff spreder

jeudi 24 octobre 2019

I have a chaff chopper I guess but it's never been put on because I'd like to put new knives on and have it balanced. But before I go that route I've seen some that are like two disks with tire like strips that spin. That seems like a better route. Does anyone know where I'd be able to get one or do you know a company that can rebuild the chopper?

RTV 1100 in swamp

mercredi 23 octobre 2019

Need some advice. I'm considering purchasing an RTV 1100 for the cab. One of the farms (tree farm) is on a river that floods a few times each winter. I'm concerned about the weight and how deep water you can go in one of these. Currently been using a Polaris XP900 and a Mule 4010. Both work fine for my purposes as far as weight and water fording. I did replace the tires on both with more aggressive mud tires and put winches on them. And does anyone tow theirs with a single axle trailer? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

RTV owners How Goes It

Hey all,

I know some of you do not venture out of the RTV section of the forums, and you all are a huge part of my support here on NTT so I'm posting this here in addition to the NTT General Info Forum.

I wanted to touch base and give a 'How Goes It' report with hopes that you will all pile on the site supporters bandwagon to make 2020 a banner year for Net Tractor Talk.

2019 has been a year of change for the forums. We continue to attract high quality posters willing to share their knowledge on the many topics covered on Net Tractor Talk. All this in spite of major email delivery issues and server compatibility issues that caused a number of extended outages. By extended I mean a few hours at most, but when in the middle of a long post and the server stops responding the frustration level peaks very quickly. Still our main core of members continue to post and we have drawn in some new blood to mix things up a bit. I applaud you all for making NTT a fun place to check in daily and to share problems and solutions for the machines we love.

It has been the most expensive year yet but we are now sitting in a good spot and hopefully positioned for years to come. I attempted to moved to a new server last July. I spent a couple weeks setting up and moving all our data to the new home only to find a major conflict with our VB software and the versions of PHP offered on that host. Very frustrating. So back to our old server while I made a new plan for the next upgrade attempt. I made the 2nd upgrade attempt a month ago and I'm happy to report all has been successful. We are on a new server with more memory, faster processors and to top it off, email delivery is now working for 99% of our members. Ahhh a good feeling. Email has been a thorn in my behind for way to long. I am so happy to be over that hump. :D

So, overall we are doing very well and, with your help, we are positioned to continue to thrive in 2020.

Once again, I have my hat is in hand as I hope you can see fit to send some dollars NTT way.

This is my annual request for donations. Once a year I will pester you for funds, and the rest of the year you can enjoy the antics of all our quality NTT members without me bugging ya.

Broken Tedder Tines - How Big a Problem?

dimanche 20 octobre 2019

Read a bit and have seen a few YT videos of folks replacing tedder tines. How big a problem are breaking tedder tines (or arms) on your tedder? Infrequent or every time out?

Our New Holland (Kuhn) tedder has never broken, bent or lost a tedder tine. When I bought the tedder, one of the tine arms was missing, but that turned out to be an easy repair.

Just curious as to how you fair keeping the tedder tines on your tedder intact.

Thanks!

Old cow new calf question

I have a 13 year old Hereford cow that hasn't gotten pregnant in 2 years even though there's a bull with her. So much to my surprise Friday night I walk out there and there's a little calf with her.. she wouldn't accept it at first and we have to put a halter on her and tie her to a post. But now she's accepted it but she doesn't give much milk... would you say take it as a bottle calf or try and supplement it or just let it be. I'd much rather the cow raise it but I would rather make it a bottle calf and have it do well over barely get what she needs from this one

Last mow of season

Over the years I've noticed my first mow of the season can vary by two to two one half weeks. So, I'm wondering about the last mow of the season.

My memory says last mow is close to the end of Oct, sometimes early November. But, I know my memory sucks. So, I mowed last Tuesday Oct 15th. That might be the last mow for this season. Not sure but hoping so.

How bout you? What is the date of your last mow of the season?

Last shot at 2019 hay

Thinking about giving trying a last push on some hay this weekend.  Rain moved out today, and showing the next 3 days in the 60's.  Have around 10 acres that came up not too long ago that hasn't been done this year.  I would like to make it dry, but not sure if it's going to make it.  Have had 2 frosts in the last week.  Regardless, I have to have it up Sunday.  Thought about wrapping it if it doesn't get dry, but would rather not.  Another 50 rolls would sure help me make it through the winter.

What moisture threshold should I be at on wrapping vs. not wrapping?  I have wrapped some hay on the drier side with mixed results.  Definitely know I need more wraps than the last time we tried it.  Right now the options are mow it Friday, bale and wrap Saturday, or mow Friday and leave it lay until Sunday, bale if dry enough, and if not, bale and wrap.

Thoughts on JD 338 baler

I'm currently running a JD 347 baler and small squares is the market I'm in so round balers are out of the question.  Just noticed a nice looking JD 338 (maybe 2012 vintage w/ maybe 15K  bales through it) that has been used baling alfalfa.  It has hydraulic bale tension unit but has been removed.  I wasn't actively looking for a new baler but my old one is pretty worn (strippers are beginning to wear through) and saw this on the side of the road.  Any thoughts - good or bad?  Owner said they switched over to a MF inline for larger bale dimensions ....

Weed spraying in Oct-NOV, ????

lundi 14 octobre 2019

Our state (Kentucky) university ag pamphlet and weed chart recommends spraying in October or November  for several weeds, including, Thistle, chickweed, hemlock, and plantain. What has been your experience with this timing? Do the weeds need to be growing and bright green for the spraying to be effective? Best temperature?  This will be a first for me, I have always sprayed in the spring. Thanks

1745 massey or BR750 New Holland?

dimanche 13 octobre 2019

Currently I have a Kr260 Krone round baler I got cheap, net wrap. It works good but makes soft core bales and I would like something a little more reliable. I found a 1745 Massey for 12k and a New Holland BR750 for 13k, why is the massey cheaper when its newer? 1000 bales on the massey, 5000 on the New Holland. Both machines seem to be in good condition. Which baler am I better off buying?

Bale Bandit or Stackcruiser?

We have been putting up just shy of 10,000 small square straw bales using a Case IH 8520 inline baler and 1037 and 1033 new Holland stack wagons for a few years, and this year purchased an older stackcruiser and I started doing alfalfa. I plan on expanding the small square operation to approximately 30,000 bales a year, and want to find a better way of loading trucks with bales, The New Holland stack wagons are great, but all moving of bales out of the shed is by hand. My question is, is there a better way of moving the bales with the stack cruiser, or would a bale bandit be a better option?

Kubota RTV X1100c Buzzing/Whine from Transmission?!?!

Good Afternoon!!!
Just got done changing fluids, both transmission and hydraulic, and filters on this machine, Kubota RTV X1100c. Drained all of the fluids a week ago to service, and then realized we didn't have one of the filters, so it just sat in the shop. The filter finally came in on Friday, and we put all of the filters back on and filled up the tanks. Fired the machine up and there is a random buzzing/whining noise coming from the rear of the machine, transmission area. All fluid levels are good. This noise was not there prior to servicing the machine. Does anyone have ANY idea as to what the heck is going on? I am baffled and am worried that letting it sit for a week with no fluids caused this. Maybe air in the hydro static transmission? If so, how do I purge it?
Thank you in advance for any ideas!!!!

What do you clean your plastic windshield with?

BorderCollie mentioned Plexus when talking of cleaning her new windshield on her Roxor. Reminded me I need a good cleaner for my plastic windshield.

Hay Bale Turn Table

samedi 12 octobre 2019

I’m looking for ideas, on building a Turn Table, to unwind Round Bales, so they can be fed into my Small Square Baler. So far, I thought of using a Spindle, and a Hub, from either a Baler, or an Old Pull Type Combine, have a piece of Plate welded to the bottom of the Spindle, and a Plate, bolted to the Hub, for the Bale to be placed on, start to feed the Hay, into the Baler, and let it pull the Hay in, as the Bale turns, and unwinds. Any thoughts, or ideas on how to build one, would be greatly Appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bruce.

Steel buildings vs. pole barn

vendredi 11 octobre 2019

What's the pro's/cons of building an all steel building (I'm talking about the ones with the large I-beams comprising the main structure) and a post-frame building?

Been toying with a 50 or 60x80. The steel buildings are cheaper in materials and look to be faster to go up, but you need a concrete pad, which would add $20k+ to the cost.

Baling corn stover

As I read this article I though of a few folks here that maybe could use the "Cornrower", that is mentioned in this straw pellet article.  Gear, Stack and Cy came to mind off the top of my head.  Seems it might save a little wear and tear on a rake or two even.

How Are Your Hay Sales Going - Fall 2019 and into 2020

Thought I'd start a thread on member hay sales to get a pulse on how your hay is selling, your local market conditions, etc. as we move into fall 2019 and later into 2020.

In our neck of the woods - IMHO, square bales of anykind (not just quality) are thin.  A lot of hay was round baled in the spring with the wet weather and the late summer drought has really put the damper on hay yield, squares and rounds.

Our regular customers have pretty much come and gone - these folks have their ducks in a row.

Business is starting to pick-up a little bit, hopefully once the cold, frosts and some snow hits - we'll get much busier.

How's it going in your neck of the woods?

NH BR7090 Net Wrap Actuator Problems

jeudi 10 octobre 2019

I just purchased a BR7090 baler.

I made 90 bales flawlessly to start the season, then had the net wrap get caught in the PTO shaft, between the clutch and the gear box... after spending about an hour or more cutting that off and cleaning that up, I tightened the brake on the net wrap. I made two more bales without issues. the third bale I got an error message after the auto-tie. I released the bale, and cleared the error and started baling.

I then noticed that the baler was wrapping the bale that i was starting to make. so as long as my PTO was engaged, the baler was wrapping whatever i had in the chamber. I ended up opening the door and rolling that small out.

I cannot get the BR7090 to extend/retract to get back to its "home" position. when i push the buttons for extend/retract i just hear ticking from the actuator in both directions.

Help me diagnose what is wrong. I am not even sure where to begin, honestly.

Thanks everyone!

One of those days

After waiting 3 weeks for some decent drying conditions, yesterday we had a chance to put up some nice hay. The problem was a stong crosswind in several parts of the field that totally messed up my raking job. One man operation here ,so could not follow the rake with the baler. I baled up what I could ,re-raked and baled the rest. As I baled, I got to thinking what I could do to stop the windrows from blowiing away as they left the rake. I seem to remember seeing a picture of a swather doing canola that had a barrel shaped device on the back that rolled on the windrow . I'm guessing this was to keep the light windrows from blowing away. Anyone had any experience with this setup or can offer other advice? Thanks.

Crop Yield Monitor for Round and Square Hay Balers

mercredi 9 octobre 2019

GOOD AFTERNOON, I AM CURRENTLY A SOPHOMORE IN A CREATIVE INQUIRY CLASS THAT LOOKS INTO BRINGING NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MARKET. CURRENTLY WE ARE FEELING OUT THE SCOPE OF THE MARKET AND I WAS HOPING TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT CROP YIELD MONITORING TECHNOLOGY FOR SQUARE AND ROUND HAY BALERS.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO PAY FOR SUCH TECHNOLOGY?

ARE THERE ANY PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET THAT WILL DO THIS?

CAN YOU EVEN SEE YOURSELF PURCHASING SUCH A THING?

DO YOU THINK OTHER FARMERS WOULD PURCHASE SUCH TECHNOLOGY?

HOW WOULD THIS TECHNOLOGY AFFECT YOU?

Is Bale Density that hard on a NH BC5070

Last year we got a BC5070. In light dry hay I have a problem with the adjustments on the bales. I have used a JD348 for years with little or no problems. The NH has 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom of the feeding fingers rod. Is it that hard. We use another 5070 with bale skiis. I have used it and things worked ok. That can't be the problem? I get tired of rebaling busted bales because one string pops off. I have been baling since 1976 and never had this kind of a problem.

Low lignin alfalfa and branch root alfalfa

mardi 8 octobre 2019

Anyone planted/experimented with low lignin alfalfa?

If so any problems/concerns with your equine market folks?

I'm pondering planting some for the ability to have a longer harvest window, increasing tonnage per cutting, while reducing number of cuttings from 4 to 3 cuttings a year. I'm liking the reduced cutting (time and equipment wear), along with reduction in traffic (perhaps longer stand life?) with the same tonnage/quality features.

As far as the branch root alfalfa, I haven't seen both traits together YET, but for those who might have some experience with branch root, have you noticed the difference in stand life and/or yield?

NH BR750 Bad Actuator

lundi 7 octobre 2019

Today I was baling and ran out of netwrap.  When I installed new wrap, I found that the actuator would not operate - only made a ratcheting noise.  Duckbill was in the up position.  Strange coincidence that failure occurred then?

So I could continue baling, I swapped the twine actuator for the netwrap actuator.  All worked well.

Now I have two questions for the bad actuator.  First, motor in it runs but it does not move - only gives a grinding ratchet sound, even when it is stand-alone.  Can I fix it?  Second, where can I find a quality replacement?  I see new prices from $430 to $787 for "my baler", but there are lots of new actuators listed on ebay for less than $100.  Is it possible to find a "generic" replacement for a fraction of the "baler actuator" prices?

Reasonable price for High Quality Timothy

Hey guys,

I just was looking for some of your opinions on what a metric tonne of high quality timothy and alfalfa should go for for a high end racehorse barn in the U.S..

Looking for a lot of hay for a bigger operation barn to import by the ton and just want to know what a ton of hay goes for for the high quality stuff.

All opinions appreciated,

Thanks.

RTV900 temperature gauge probem

I was doing a radiator flush and as I was warming the engine up I realized the temperature gauge wasn't moving at all. I haven't had this RTV very long. I have never seen it over heat but just hadn't realized that the gauge apparently does not work at all. When the headlights are turned on the gauge lights up so I know it is getting power. Is there a way to know if the gauge is bad or if it is something else? What else could it be?

Fall grazing cereal Rye and Wheat

I planted a small patch of cereal Rye and winter Wheat for early Spring grazing. I want the cows to have something to graze before the perennial pastures are ready.

I planted on September 14. We have been very dry since late July. The Rye and Wheat has had a few .1-.25" rains, but nothing big. We are supposed to get an inch tonight!

The new grasses are about 6" tall now. I fertilized when I planted, so I think this rain should get it growing fast.

My herd is small, 11 cows, yearlings and calves, and 3 horses.

My question, Can I graze this Wheat and Rye this Fall or Winter without sacrificing early Spring growth? My perennial pastures have hardly grown since June, and I am starting to worry. The Rye and Wheat is also very conveniently close to water and the barn where we milk our Jersey.

Can horses graze Wheat and Rye?

Is there anyone that can fix 1140CPX Transmissions 2014 ?

samedi 5 octobre 2019

I have two 1140 CPX's that have great 1100hr diesel engines, and everything works with metal tops and doors, but the transmissions don't work. One of them has been to two of three dealers and the other one has been to 2 of 3 local dealers.

None of these three dealers can tell me what is wrong with them. They literally just say, "Well, we have to tear them open and see what is wrong." .......Okay, how much...."We don't know, might be $2,000-$6,000."

This is ludicrous for what I have already paid them, they should be able to have a rough idea of what is wrong with them.

One of them machines stills had medium range, but not low or high. The other one, nobody knows what is wrong with it.....and that is coming from Kubuta dealers....not some shady mechanic.....What do I do?

Is there anyone that I can take both of these machines to in the Kentucky or surrounding states that I can have confidence in, figuring out and fixing the transmission problems?

Its like they sell a machine and if anything goes wrong, they just figure it runs on magic dust and have no idea how it operates or what could likely be that went wrong.

I have another post about trying to fix them, but it didn't really go anywhere. I would like to find someone who has fixed these RTV transmissions, several times.

Let me know, what you guys think.
Sam

From Pasture...to Hay Field

Howdy! Long time reader, first time poster.

I have 30 acs. of pasture land that I am planning to convert to a hay field (either Jiggs or Coastal, sprigged). The goal is to prep now and sprig in late February/early March 2021. So I have about 16 months or so to make-ready.

The current pasture grasses consist primarily of: common Bermuda (30%), Kleingrass (30%), KR bluestem (20%), Texas wintergrass--aka speargrass (10%), with the remainder being a mix of Johnson grass and other natives.

The pasture has been vacant for nearly 25 years (no grazing whatsoever), however, it has been kept very neatly mowed (3-4") over the years--which has helped with weed management. It has only been chemically sprayed for weeds once--and that was early this summer, using Cimarron Plus.

It has been years since the pasture has seen commercial fertilizer. A recent soil analysis calls for 70 lbs. N/ac. and 70 lbs. P2O5/ac. The pH is 7.3 (slightly alkaline). The soil type is commonly referred to as Blackland Prairie, which has a heavy black clay topsoil (2-3' deep) and a yellow clay subsoil underneath.

My thoughts on site prep are:

1) Spray with glyphosate in early spring as grasses/weeds begin to emerge;

2) Chisel plow shortly after chemical burndown;

3) Spray with Pastora in say mid-April in an attempt to control the Texas wintergrass and KR bluestem;

4) Disc plow (multiple times) to break up clods, control vegetation and prep soil bed;

5) Use field cultivator to break up remaining clods and prep soil bed;

6) Spray herbicides as needed to eliminate/control emerging grasses and weeds;

7) Possibly light disc and/or use cultipacker just prior to sprigging.

Any other suggestions regarding my site prep plan? Any benefit to spraying and/or chiseling this fall? Keep in mind that it is extremely dry here and any attempt at plowing now would be almost pointless. We desperately need some rain!

Also, regarding fertilizer application... When should I start applying fertilizer in an effort build up the soil? Should I apply any now? Or should I wait until after the field has been sprigged?

Thanks in advance for your input. I look forward to your replies!

Best to deck-mow or let stand?

Our 2 1/2 acre hayfield (OG, Meadow Brome & Timothy) didn't grow enough for a late-summer mowing, so its now 12-18 inches tall (mostly closer to 12). Is it best to mow it off now with the deck mower, or leave it stand thru the winter?

And does it make much difference which we do?

It would be easier to fertilize (now or in spring) if we mow now, but would be better for the field mice (also making the local raptors happy) to leave it stand.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Raking/Combining Windrows

Hello everyone.  I have a question in regards to raking hay ahead of the baler.  For straight alfalfa I usually run this schedule if the weather cooperates:

Day 1 – Cut

Day 2 – Leave alone

Day 3 – Ted/Flip (Pequea 710)

Day 4 – Rake during the morning and bale that evening

I rake as the dew is coming off in late morning and bale as late that evening as I can to try to save as many leaves as possible but still get done.  I have pushed my baling to the morning of Day 5 in heavy first cutting, but getting that long of a weather window doesn’t always work out.

When I rake, I rake everything in single windrows (i.e. rake in circles, turning each individual swath over) to make sure everything keeps drying.  However aside from first cutting, I generally need to rake 3 or 4 windrows together ahead of the baler that evening to make a large enough windrow for the baler (JD 336).

I don’t like the idea of raking the hay for a second time, it really seems counterproductive to trying to save leaves. I have tried putting 3 to 4 windrows together right away in the morning once, but was left with a lot of uneven moisture.  I currently have a JD 570 side delivery rake.  I’m afraid that if I move my single windrow raking up a day, I will make too many ropes.   I have a lot of interest in a small rotary rake, and I think that would allow me to rake earlier without roping but was just wanted to get a few opinions about what needs to change and how/when others combine windrows before baling.

Late season cutting of alfalfa og mix

jeudi 3 octobre 2019

Hey everyone. With this awfully wet and weird year my alfalfa field is lagging behind. I've only taken three cuttings and usually would easily get four. I'm located in middle Nebraska and now our weather is turning cold. It hasn't frosted yet but it is getting down into the 40's at night. Early this spring I intersowed some orchard grass and it came up very nicely. I'm looking for help in what I should do with the crop. This coming week should be dry all week with no chance of freeze. The field is blooming on the edges and spots into the field as well. The og is about 8" tall. I have some guys wanting small squares so it'd make some decent money but I really don't want to hurt the stand. What would you do?

Ford NAA Power Steering

Hi. I have searched for an answer, but come up with zero. I hope to get some help.

My dad has a 1954 Ford NAA. It has a loader and power steering, even though I understand that NAA did not come with PS. I think I have identified the loader as a Davis, and in the Colo Springs area I have seen craigslist entries of other tractors that look identical - w/ Davis loader, a hyd pump hanging out the front grill, hydraulic cylinders on the steering links.

Here's the analysis. His steering column locked up. We took the steering box out and apart and it looks like that box has not had grease or oil for decades. Shaft bearings are fried, "roller ball" assembly for the shaft's toothed block was frozen. The whole steering shaft assembly with bearings and races inside the box needs replacement. The gears look good. Box looks good.

Here's the configuration. His steering column appears to be made up of 2 or 3 shafts: a 9-10" shaft assembly inside the box with a coupler at it's top end. That mates to a shaft that goes into a hydraulic valving unit that has 4 hydraulic hoses. That valving unit is anchored to the steering box with 2 long bolts. Then there is a shaft above the valving unit that the steering wheel is connected to. Because it is in another state, I cannot confirm at this point if the assembly above the steering box is composed of 1 or 2 shaft pieces, but that's not a concern.

Here's the problem. In all of my research, including dealers and online, I cannot determine what the steering box is, and I definitely cannot find a steering box 'shaft assembly' that is only 9-10 inches long. It appears to match a S.67078, but that looks like a one piece long shaft.

If I know I have a shaft assembly that fits, I am willing to cut the shaft and fasten the shaft coupling I have to the end, if that's what I must do.

Help! I need information to know what to do!

Making Corn Stalk Bales with Rotocut Baler

mardi 1 octobre 2019

Looking at the possibility of making some corn stalk bales this Fall.  Anyone make rounds with a rotocut baler?   Thinking small windrows, and only running the knives if the stalks aren't too tough.   Have a Claas 280RC baler.

Anyone have any tips? - or is this just a way to wear out a baler?

Appreciate your thoughts either way

Service Time.

It has been approaching 100° nearly every day for the last week. But it is service time for the balers and other haying apparatuses. I serviced, washed, and wrapped up both the round baler and the square baler. It is a little early to do that here, but we are in such severe drought that there is no hope of anymore growth to amount to anything before we get a freeze sometime in November.

Here is a pic of my little hot rod. In addition to the regular service, I changed the oil and filter in the hydraulic tensioning system.

Regards, Mike
