Hay Glut?

jeudi 15 octobre 2020

Don’t know how it looks in your area, but we are seeing a LOT if square bales around for sale, 180 degrees from last year. Is 2020 going to be a 4 letter word in your area - GLUT?

We’ve sold a fair amount of hay, almost all of it to repeat customers who want quality hay. We’ve had a few nippy frosts, but nothing to drive one time customers out of the woodwork and our way - but there is a ton of $4 hay and IMHO round bales must have set a record volume this year. They are lined up in fields and stacked in barns to the max everywhere.

We’re still in the cutting baling mode when we see a weather window and that includes the rest of October, into November and maybe December. I know that sounds crazy, but occasionally we will get 5 days of warm- non-seasonal weather with 70’s, sunshine and goodly wind even in Oct, Nov and early Dec. We’ve got all of our “horse quality” hay finished and what is left is what I call “gleaner” hay - stuff we can make and sell for cow and goat hay.

I don’t think at this point we are going to sell out by year’s end. I see us selling well into spring until a green-up with perhaps some hay left over. That’s the thought on our farm.

What’s the hay inventory and sales looking like in your area? Hay glut?

Just curious.

Thanks!
Bill
