For those of you with experience with these, what is your cold pressure? I have three running gear with them firestone I-1 8 plus and always heard that you risk failure at higher pressures. Been running 32-35 but there is some suggestion on the internet to run 45 psi. Thanks

Hesston 1840

Ok so I had a weak moment and traded my tired tried and true 348 in on a new 1840 Heston with a Harvest Tech Fully automated applicator. I've done a ton of reading and comparing specs. It was either going to be a Hesston or a new hayliner and the deciding factor for me was ease of transportability down the road when pulling my accumulator. In my reading I remember someone here saying they had installed special straw dogs inside the chamber of the 1840 for baling straw. Can anyone that runs one of these machines elaborate on this. I do bake some straw in the summer from time to time and I'm wondering if it is something I will need. Or maybe I completely misread the thread.

Hydraulic system design and sourcing.

I have been reading up on hydraulics and I am more confused than educated. I work with pumps, motors etc. every day, but designing a system puts me in over my head.

What I want to do is run a hydraulic pump from a 540 pto. I will run it via chain and sprocket rather than run the pto to a gearbox. I am thinking that I will mount it under the pto shaft and generate power via the chain drive.

I would like that pump to power a minimum of a 55 hp motor via hoses, and relatively long ones.

I understand the need for reservoir sizing, and that it should be roughly three times the gpm of the system. According to what I think I know that will put it in the 150 range?

The next question. Where can I source a used pump and motor, and how can I ensure that they are compatible? Of course speeds can be handled via sprockets if necessary. Of course on the motor, of it was 540 rpm output and 55 hp that would work to.

I have a great hydraulic shop semi locally that can help me figure this out, but I can't get in there for a few days and I thought that I would post here.

Of course if this idea works, and I know similar has been accomplished, the information may be helpful to others.

I am thinking maybe a hydraulic pump from a skid steer would work? Maybe from a swather?

My goal is to design a double baler hitch that doesn't require a gearbox. I would like to put a hydraulic pump, pto driven, on the tongue of the first baler, taking power via the chain drive on the pto shaft. Using the tongue of the hitch as a reservoir, and to run the hoses along to the second baler. This in turn would power the hydraulic drive motor for the second baler. The motor would be on the hitch and utilize the original pto shaft on that second baler.

Any input would be helpful.

RTVX-1120D Aluminum Rims

I am not a big fan of the fancy aluminum rims with ATV tires on the recent 1120D. I asked my dealer about swapping them for a dark grey rim and ATV tire. He said they are not able to do that.

After about a week in the mud and...well stuff that doesn't look good on a fancy rim, these will look terrible.

Have others on this forum kept them, traded them, replaced them?

I know the factory ATV tire itself is not great for traction and many other types have been suggested.

If I don't hear a better idea, I will take delivery as is and as soon as financially possible, replace with steer rims and 26" Wild Thangs.

Is there any market for slightly used aluminum rims and factory ATV tires?

By the way, we appear to have a bumper crop of pawpaws in Ohio this year, barring any frost between now and May 15th.

Question on PTO driveline for rotary mower

samedi 29 avril 2017

I have my grandpa's old Ford 22-60 rotary mower/stalk chopper.  With me it enters its 3rd generation of service.

I need to replace the PTO driveline.  The 6 splined shaft that comes out of the mower gear box looks like it's a 1 1/8" shaft.  Are there any PTO shaft drivelines where the implement size is 1 1/8" and the tractor side is 1 3/8"?  I have not been able to find any so if not, would I be able to put a shaft adapter over the mower shaft to bring it up to 1 3/8" so I can then hook a PTO drive line up to it?

Kubota RA 1035 rotery rake - Any tricks to running?

Cold and wet outside so read the manual front to back and sideways. I think I understand, but was hoping experts on single rooter rakes might lent their thoughts  or tricks on running. I was running a Ford 503 side deliver rake before so I am in for a bit of a learning curve. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Keith

604sm help with final adjustments please

/+recently purchased 2013 vermeer 604sm at estate sale and trying to get it ready if it ever stops raining.

PLEASE help

1) Trying to optimize netwrap and the book says measure 3 1/2" from shear bar and horizontal spring steel.  To set timing marks.  Cannot for the life of me figure out what horizontal spring steel is.  Is it the roller that has a wire welded around it that spreads net wrap?  Even with picture am at a loss.

2)Baler has field upgrade that repositions netwrap brake spring.  Baler is cutting and ripping net to early so I figure I need to loosen spring tension.  How do we adjust this upgrade spring tension is not in vermeer manual.

Underlayment

vendredi 28 avril 2017

I went back to using plastic underlayment in my barn to help keep bottom bales nice and dry.
Had some outside stacks that didnt get picked up till spring and lost the bottom row. We typically get them up fast enough we don't loose the bottom row. Was thinking for this year to use underlayment on my outside stacks. My plan would be to stack on a old tarp and cut the excess off of both sides of stack, to prevent pooling of water under stack. Just wondering if anyone has tried this. Looked at some other systems but would rather not go that direction. I know building is my best bet but tarps are a nessisarly evil for me.
Thanks for any tips

Help needed ASAP-Steel Tubing Source

I am midway through changing running gears under two wagons and ran into a need for a longer piece of steel tubing.  It is the material used between the two axles, 3" OD and somewhere shy of .25 wall thickness.  Anyone know where I can get that in the Hagerstown-southern pa area?  Need two pieces 14' long each.  Thanks.

2014 x900 vs. 2016 1100

I bought a used 2014 x900 a few months ago and thought the whole throttle connected to the hydro drive arrangement odd from the beginning. My machine to me seems a bit sluggish. I put it in H and press the throttle and RPMs come up and then it seems like suddenly when they get to a certain point it begins to move. Now today I noticed an 1100 sitting at local JD dealer and decided to stop in and act like I was interested in buying it so I could take it for a spin to compare it to mine assuming they are similar beasts. I was extremely surprised that when I put the 1100 in H it was extremely peppy with no lag between pushing pedal and going. Is this normal for them or does my x900 have issues?

Thinning alfalfa and winterkill...

mercredi 26 avril 2017

I have an issue I need some advice on, I have 40 acres of straight alfalfa this is the 4rth growing season. One 30 acre field and 3 patches to make the other 10 acres.

The big field may have 10-15 percent winterkilled. my plan is to seed 10 pounds of anual rye in the dead/thin spots to keep weeds down and get something off it then go back to row crops for awhile in 2018.

The small patches I plan to keep as forever hay fields, as our row crop equipment is really to big for them. I want to seed them with some sort of grass possibly orchard or timothy. Just wondering for a long term at and what would be best.... I have also Been told to mix a few pounds of brome seed it as it spreads and fills in as the alfalfa and other grass thins. Thought?

My plan was to use out old press drill to "no till" it in as soon as it dries up. I have had success no tilling alfalfa should work for grass? It seems the old wore out disks and Springs just scratch the hard surface enough but don't get it to deep like if it was all worked up...

So thought of the best grass mix? Also if anyone else has done similar to an old alfalfa stand?

Stability

For arguments sake and because the forum seems quiet.... I took a S, almost a z curve in my x1100c today on asphalt at 24mph. I drive this "one car road" behind my house every day, in the 3500 ram 15 mph is hanging on, 25 mph in the wife's car wouldn't fly if she was in it. My point is the x1100c is capable of higher speeds and is not high centered. At no point was I worried about flipping or even getting on two wheels as a matter of fact I was smiling and having a ball. While going down the road I almost felt comfortable enough to yank a right turn onto a road without letting off the throttle.. almost
Further more I can't see the high cog argument when 99% of the machines weight is below the seats.
Long story short and maybe it's just me but I feel like the current configuration is capable of 40mph the only thing questionable to me would be the hunt and peck hydraulic steering

Water in NH Discbine module

I have a NH 1409 discbine 9-3 with 7 modules.  Just finished servicing it to be ready for hay season.  I started changing the module gear oil each year as I was getting discoloration (milky color from water) in the gear oil on the outside module.  Local NH mechanic who seems very knowledgeable and who has been very helpful on multiple issues is stumped.  He says the seal is not leaking as there would be oil coming out and I would at least see oil stain somewhere when the db has been parked for a long time.  We thought it might be that I washed it off while it was still warm from use so I made double sure it was cool before I washed it off all last season.  I wash it out after every use to try to save the sheet metal as much as possible.  This year, same discolored gear oil but only in one module. Now there is not a lot of water getting in, no free water drains out.  It stays shedded most of the year.  only out when cutting hay as I have to prop wagons with hay in them  in the shed that I store the db in  during the off season.

Anyone with a theory on why the water is getting in?  MIke 10?

New Holland 276 broken needle

Hi,

My new holland 276 conventional square baler has broken one of its needles and i cant figure out why this has happened. I have removed all the hay from the bale chamber hoping to find something in there that the needle could have hit but i couldnt find anything. I don't think there is a problem with the timing of the machine that could have caused the plunger to hit the needles because then they would both be broken??. I did notice there was some twine stuck in the billhook of the knotter that has a broken needle, not sure if that could have anything to do with it. Is there anything else someone could suggest I check as I would like to know why the needle broke before I put a new one in or repair the broken one if possible. Any help is much appreciated.

How wet is too wet of ground to plant grass hay?

We've killed the hay field, and tilled it twice at 4 inches to break up the hard pan clay. Has been hay field well over 20 years by previous owner, with minimal care.

Plan to plant pure orchard grass.

Question : how dry must the soil be before planting? Boss man with no experience says powder dry, no cultipacker.

Will plant using brillion style planter with microtiller on front.

Field has baseball size clay lumps in certain areas, especially wetter ones (tractor is leaving tracks). I'm thinking to field harrow it, then pack it and clumps will level off, rain forecast this weekend. I don't think it has to be bone dry, but that's why I'm asking.

What is best to prep for planting?

I do have pics, but not sure how to add.

Using GoldSky in teff

I have about three acres of land that's come available to me that I want to grow in produce next year. It is covered in dock and foxtail right now. I will need to plow the ground, as it is rough, and was thinking about planting it in Teff this summer for weed suppression followed by rye in the fall. I know after I plant the Teff I am still going to have issues with the foxtail and dock. I was reading some studies online where they tried different herbicides for weed control in Teff. It looked like the best one was GoldSky at 0.5 pints per acre. They said it did a great job controlling foxtail and dockweed and increased the yield substantially. Looks like they sprayed about 3.5 weeks after seeding. Has anyone else used this in Teff before? If so did it work well? I know the tests are several years old, so is there something better that I should look at? From reading on here, it seems that Latigo is used by a lot of producers, but it didn't perform nearly as well in the study as the GoldSky. I also know all trials do not totally relate to what is experienced on other farms. I have included the links to some of the studies below.

Metallurgy - Best way to straighten this grapple?

I picked up this John Deere WorkSite Pro GT72 grapple at an auction Friday.  A buddy has been wanting one.  I'd like to straighten some of the teeth that are really out of place, then weld pipe spacers between them 6 inches in from the ends for support.  How would you go about bringing these teeth back into proper position?  Not sure how I can do it without lots of heat, but not sure if the heat would be a good thing in the long haul.

Vermeer 605k recharge hydraulics

My 605k needs to have the hydraulic system bled/recharged, I have the operator's manual but no info on the procedure...can't find a repair manual anywhere... spoke with local dealer, "ya just have to bring it in", come on I've have as nice a shop as they do and am somewhat mechanically inclined, I just need the procedure...this is the one thing I don't like about Vermeer, I can't get a repair manual for it...We have JD, Case, NH, Kubota and Polaris on our ranch and I have service manuals for all equip. except the Vermeer...60mi to dealer, so we have to do repairs ourselves...love Vermeer but this issue will make me trade this unit in on another brand if I can't resolve it...sorry just venting

Selling for haylage or baleage - 1st cut alfalfa?

samedi 22 avril 2017

Last year I sold all my first cut alfalfa to a local dairy for haylage.  I mowed, they had a custom operation merge, chop and truck.  I'm wondering if having it rolled and wrapped, then marketing the baleage would/could be advantageous to my bottom line?  I have no idea what baleage sells for.  Thoughts on marketing baelage?

Swather Needs A Ride

Bought a MacDon M205 w/16' rotary head and I need to get it shipped from Colorado to Missouri (850+ miles).  I am checking with local transport companies and equipment dealers, but dealers are busy now and not many locals have experience with self propelled swathers.

If anyone can recommend a transport co. that they have experience with, I would really appreciate their contact info.

Or maybe someone in Colorado (who is tired of waiting for grass to grow) would like to take a trip east and make a little extra income.

Any thoughts, advise, recommendations, or references are appreciated.  Thanks

Did the Roundup work?

Last week Friday I sprayed 10 acre mixed grass hay field at the rate of 1 quart per acre, and 2 acre empty field (previously teff)now weeds and cool season grasses creeping in, at same spray rate.

Mix was 20 gal water with one quart roundup plus 1.75 cup dish soap. This was recommended online to help the killer stay on the plant. This was done for each acre.

Grass was greenish, but still low, maybe 3in tall? Sprayed on sunny 60 degree afternoon with rain late evening.

How do I know if it's working? The grass only appears slightly yellowed near base of plant.

I plan to fire burn killed stuff, then light till of top 2 inches then seed orchard grass with brillion style seeder and cultipacker.

Like to plant early May, so I need to know if my grass is sufficiently sprayed to die!

What's the time frame with signs?

Kosher Slaughter on the farm

So I had a call yesterday from a person who wants to come and buy a steer from me. They want to come to the farm and "Kosher Slaughter" the animal. I would then need to take carcass to butcher for processing for them... Not sure I really want to get into this, but it could be a good niche market for me to sell my 15-20 animals a year. Any one every do this? Input? FYI a kosher slaughter means cuts its neck and letting it bleed out while live....

Massey 1328 Disc Mower Troubleshooting

I have a MF 1328 3-pt disc mower, about 6 years old, low use (about 300 acres).  At the end of last season it had a vibration/bumping when I raised it up to turn, then all of the time as I finished the last field.

I did not have a heat gun but two of the rotors were very hot to the touch, the other four were not so hot.  Just ran it about 20-30 min and used a heat gun, all six gear boxes were around 90 deg F, and no vibration.

I checked the dip sticks in each gearbox and all were full to the top, one had blue color to the grease the others were brown.  Wondering if it might be the spindal bearings in a couple of them, and how to replace them.

Anyone have experience with something like this?

Thanks!  I need to settle it before we begin cutting.

Well, I took a chance and laid down 30 acres of rye yesterday.  Weather showed 20% chance of rain.  Woke up this morning and rain was coming down.  Rest of week calls for upper 80's.  Will I be able to save this and make hay?  New to the hay making business and would like suggestions on how to save this if possible.  Can't afford to lose this.  Still haven't recovered from last years drought and army worm attack.  Thanks

New RTVX1100C

mardi 18 avril 2017

After weeks of searching this forum and visiting my local Kubota dealer I finally bit the bullet and bought a new RTV1100C. It will be put to work on my hobby farm, sawmill, and maple syrup business. My father owned one of the first RTV900s and I am amazed at the differences in my machine. I considered the Polaris and John Deere but in my opinion Kubota makes the better UTV. The 0% financing is great too !

I have been doing a lot of research on the ck series of kiotis. And I'm trying to find out if I can get a MMM for the ck2610. I like the bigger size of the overall tractor compared to the ck2510. But I need a mid mount mower. I have a lot of close corner cutting to do and just would like to find out if there is an option to get a ck2610 with a mmm. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

New holland 575 baler inches or metric main crank bearing

I am rebuilding my 575 and when ordering parts from messicks website, I ran into the problem of deciding whether I need to order the metric or inches main bearing from the gear box crank arm to the plunger crank arm?  My question is how do u tell if you need the metric or inches bearing assembly?  The inches is 265 and the metric is 365 somewhere in there.

PTO Shaft Problem

The CV joint on the PTO shaft of my Bush Hog 2615 shredder was going bad, so I bought a replacement shaft from Sloan Express.  This is a 21 spline 1000 RPM shaft

The 2615 end went on -- no problem.

The tractor end of the new shaft will not go on enough for the locking balls to seat.  I cannot get the female end to go any deeper.  Looked inside--there is an-ever-so-slight ridge by one of locking balls.

I'm wondering if this is a manufacturing defect or if the clearances are that tight?  Any thoughts?  I have used the 1000 RPM PTO with the old shaft--no problem.

Thanks,

Ralph

Question for all the small square bale guys

How many bales an hour are you folks doing when conditions are decent, not perfect.
Pops is hung up on 200 an hour, and says "ain't nobody doin' better ern dat" I laughed and said WOW...
Usually we get decent hay except for last years second cut.. normallywe would get 3500 plus.. we got maybe 350 yeah...not good.
Anyways he bales with a NH310 with a 70 kicker into 18' wagons stacked to 200 per wagon.
He thinks that a 570 isn't much faster than his 310... yeah old school Yankee... oh and the tractor he uses to do this with is a 2000 NH 2120 4wd with weights and loaded tires...43hp gross 35pto hp. Will this little turd run a 570 with kicker towing a wagon? My tractor is a 97hp 2wd 1594 Case.
If I can't get 350-400 bph I'm gonna be really pressed for time..

New Holland 575 plunger adjustment

lundi 17 avril 2017

I put new knives on my baler.  The bottom horizontal roller on the knife side of the baler wasn't even touching the rail.  Then I went to the left side of the plunger to adjust it over through the inspection plate.  When I loosen the nutt and adjust the cam I can spin the cam in circles when the left upper roller is against the left rail.  There is no adjustment left.  My question is will new rollers fix this problem  and give me a tighter plunger that I can adjust or will I probably have to replace rails?   I can feel a groove worn in the upper left,  rail but that should only be vertical play, I cant feel any deep grooves that are creating this horizontal play.  I cant figure out where all the side to side play is other than maybe the rollers are smaller sized now than new. If anybody can understand this I would appreciate help. thanks Im headed up to measure the rollers I believe they are 2.5 od new.

Preservative applicator nozzle location on a new Holland 426

I'm putting a cropcare applicator on my 426. Harvest tec is the most readily available preservative around here. Anyone put one on a 425 or 426 and how did you mount the nozzle(s)? Two mechanics have said in the cross feed, cropcare suggested above the feeder. That's 3 or 4 really tiny nozzles if my math is right. Putting one near the cross feed looks sketchy, thinking it would be easily broken off. Any ideas would be great, picture would be awesome!

Pepperweed in new planting of hay.

Planted field of orchard last fall and frost seeded red clover in it. The field had beans in it the last 7 years so I though the weeds would be down pretty good so that's why I went ahead and put red clover on. But there is plenty of weeds. But the majority of it is pepperweed. Actually got a real good stand of it. 2-4d will take out my clover so I'm hoping to just keep it cut and hopefully the pepperweed will not come back next year. Any experience with this stuff. The only good thing is it's not a toxic weed. Maybe I should just spray it and fall drill either clover or alfalfa. There is 18 acres of this. Spray or try and mow it out?

We have a pull behind bar rake. Tricycle type. It seems to spiral the hay tight. I have been looking at getting a wheel rake instead. However, I see a lot of people using bar rakes on here. Any ideas? There is not really an adjustment to make but I'm curious why it spirals. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!

Oats

Where does oats fit into hay making for horses - small square bales? Where do oats fit in crop planting, timing, rotation?

To late for oats this year, but I've got my eye on a field I'm going to redo this fall and am curious as to how oats might fit into the mix.

This field may go into Teff for a couple of years, so I'm wondering what other crop I might fall or spring plant as an annual to glean some hay prior to planting Teff.

If Teff is a good spring to fall crop - frost to frost, what can be planted, harvested as the balance of the cooler year to generate revenue - oats?

Not sure around here horse owners would know anymore about oats than Teff - might be an uphill sell.

Oats? Where does it fit in an annual crop that would otherwise be Teff? Maybe it doesn't.

Thanks!
Bill

First of all Happy Easter! The promise of eternal life.Looking at a 1045 NH Stackliner.Never have used one.Specs say I need 15 feet to tip the stack.Well the bottom of my trusses to the ground are 14 feet, with more clearance between the trusses. Its an open pole barn 100' ×80'.My question is would tipping the load before entering the barn gain me any more room?I measured the overall length of the second table that the stack sits on and it is about 12 feet.Seems to me that having the stack tipped most of the way might gain me more room before entering barn or am I missing something?

Question on a Claas round baler net wrap motor.

The Claas 62 baler that I picked up a couple years ago has always had a jury-rigged net wrap system on it and I'd like to get that fixed.  Currently, the system is set up with a manual switch to control the solenoid that diverts hydraulic pressure to either the netwrap system or to the gate cylinders.  However, this jury-rigging eliminated the function of the electric motor which trips the knife, so I'm left stopping the baler and cutting the net wrap by hand.  The original design had a control box that handled this by monitoring a reed swtich that was used to determine the amount of net wrap that had been applied to the bale and then activating the electric motor.  I've checked everything except the control box, the DC motor and the wiring itself.

When I started looking at the motor I discovered that it has 4 wires.  I know it is a DC motor and the system runs on 12V from the tractor, but that's about it.  Anyone know a way of testing this motor to make sure it is OK?

RTV900 '06 - No Power to Wheels

Hi All,
New to the forum..and looking for help

We have a '06 RTV900.
One morning, started it up and no power to the wheels.

* We measure 0psi at the Check and High Pressure Relief
Valve (machine started in neutral)
* So no drive to the Assist or Stationary Motors.
* Hence we focus on the control of the Variable Swashplate (HST Pump)
* No problem with Regulator Valve Assembly
(Feedback Level, Control Level, Regulator Spool)
* Pressure by Charge Pump at the Charge Relief Valve is good
- reading 87psi
* Suspect the servo piston position is not changing, regardless of
Feedback Lever position, so the pump's variable swashplate remains
neutral - hence 0psi
* To verify this, we adjusted the Piston Adjusting Screw to force the
piston to move. Sure enough, we get power

Why would this need to be adjusted?
Could it indicate issues e.g. piston seals

Just not sure how to interpret the results of our "debugging"!
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Too dry for April, too dry so far this year...

vendredi 14 avril 2017

While I know that many of you are up to your eyeballs in water, we had a very dry winter with no snow and no groundwater recharge and spring is already very dry.  Bad way to start the hay season.  Guessing the averages will get steadied by a monsoon in the end of may that will last to the middle of June and wreck the hay crop.  Are others on the east coast experiencing the same?

Sweet Vernal Grass

Looking over one of my fields this morning and there is one area in it where the sweet vernal grass is growing like crazy! The Timothy is plenty there too, but the vernal grass is growing much faster. The stems are so thin, as well as the leafs, so while its competing, the stuff isn't smothering the Timothy. We are small enough of a hay operation that we can segment/grade our hay when storing it, so I'll bale up the vernal grass and sell it as a Timothy mix.

Question is - other than killing off the field, any other way to deal with sweet vernal grass in Timothy? The stuff puts out a ton of seeds, I'm not sure killing and replanting gains much as the legacy seed bed is so great and it's eradication is complicated by its earlier than hay harvest life cycle.

I'm to understand from reading that sweet vernal grass IF allowed to mold can cause internal bleeding issues with horses, but can't really find it's been an epidemic problem across the US. When I go on Craigslist, I see the stuff in pics of square bales and it's everywhere around here. I know sweet vernal grass (and the presence of other weeds) is a reflection of poor soil. What's puzzling to me is this field is in very good shape, has a PH of around 6.3 and is fertilized per soil analysis - so it ain't a "poor" field. Kind of makes me think sweet vernal grass likes "good" soil too!

How do you deal with sweet vernal grass? No problems ever, bale it up - sell it as part of your premium bale, it's never seen in your hayfields, got some in every bale, the "sweet" smell of it helps sell "green" hay and worse case it offsets the vinegar smell of the buffered propionic acid...

How do you deal with sweet vernal grass?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Bill

What do folks charge to make their land available to hay producers?

Will likely soon have a small place in East Texas that will have about 10 acres of quality producing hay pasture.  What are common arrangements that folks have to make such land available to a local person interested in growing, cutting and baling hay on the property.  I don't need any of the hay currently, so is there a typical range per acre that land owners will charge to a hay producer.  Any past experience with this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bale Barron or Bandit , - gather same day or wait one - ??

We have baled Bermuda small squares and packaged up same day , no problems but getting ready to bale straight alfalfa and alfalfa grass mix, it just seems like the tight cube the Barron makes could set up an envioment for spoilage , unless dry dry , and if you wait to bale real dry alfalfa there will be no leaves. The Agatronix bale moisture , shows 12-14 percent when baling and using preservative. Any experience, and this is GA , not out west with dry air all the time. So anybody wait one day or bundle up same day , if same day at what moisture ??
Thanks

Kuhn accumulator & grapple

Well I took the leap today, order a new Kuhn accumulator (1534) 15 bale on edge, a tie grapple (TN615) and regular grapple (615).  Small square bales here I come again, no more round bale customers asking if I do small squares. :)

Now I just need all the 'tips and tricks' about using a grapple system.  I seem to remember a posting something about 'I could teach a lot of grapple tricks in 20 minutes' and 'lubing the top of the accumulator (graphite?? maybe), postings on HT.

Maybe all the HTers tips and tricks can be pinned like, Mike10's tricks and tips.  (GREAT reading BTW).  I don't seem to have good luck on finding old previously posted good stuff on HT.  Someday, I will have to show my grandkids HT, they will probably show me how locate stuff on HT (if I can pry them away from the games, FB, Twitter, SnapChat, etc.).

Told a friend about my leap today and he ask if I was willing to do some custom work.  Now, I need to figure out the cost/profit of an unknown.  Has anyone penciled out grapple custom rates in their area?

Some rational for my questions is there is nobody that I know of using a grapple system in my area.  The closest dealer with an accumulator in stock is 130+ miles away.   I blazing a trail again, we use hay baskets, throw wagons or flat decks (hand stacking) mainly in my area.   I know of a couple of old NH pull stackers and one hay Bandit or Barron (metal straps are used about 30 miles away, just seen the finish product at a neighbor's farm last Sunday).

Thanks in advance (I can learn from reading and/or a video).

Cereal Rust Mite Video - Tinothy

Interesting article about cereal rust mite and video linked in the article by Penn State.

The Timothy field they are in looks pretty brown. Hope that's before full green-up (which is when I thought you sprayed) and not post cereal rust mite damage.

You folks spraying for cereal rust mite in your Timothy fields this year? I use Sevin XLR plus. Can't say I've ever seen evidence of the mite here - yet....

Kuhn Model 55 Mower

Need some help with a hydraulic cylinder for a Kuhn mower.  When I go to lift the cylinder back to vertical, it will come up about half way and the oil comes out of the overflow port on the top end of the cylinder.  Has anyone seen this before and can these cylinders be rebuilt? Can't seem to find a replacement cylinder on any web searches I have done.  Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Hesston 4760 guys

lundi 10 avril 2017

So it looks like I'll be purchasing a used Hesston 4760 baler this week or next. It's a good used machine, well cared for, 22k bales w/ harvestec applicator. I have zero experience with big balers, this is one of the first ones in western NC, definitely the first one within 100 miles of me. So does anyone out there have lots of experience with a hesston big baler and want to make a trip(travel and lodging and time paid of course) to beautiful western NC to help a young farmer get this baler running this spring? My dealers have never even seen a big baler and told me they wouldn't be able assist very much in setting the baler up and getting tuned etc. Thanks in advance. I'm dead serious about the offer, if you're a seasoned veteran with these balers. Feel free to call or text Stuart at 828-429-3574. We have accommodations on our farm or can put you up in the local hotel. 1 hour from Charlotte or Greenville/Spartanburg or Asheville airports. If anybody has any other type of solution I am all ears.

alternative to hot branding?

Saturday all the guys and a bunch of neighbors combined to brand, vaccinate and castrate calves. My question is what are alternatives to hot branding? Our farm is located in New Mexico and I don't know if there are legal issues regarding what is an acceptable form of identification. We are wondering about using the cold brand method and about the bolus RFID or ear tags. In particular, what is the cost of the RFID that the cow swallows? I can find plenty of sales information on the bolus RFID, but here is never a price given. I would rather have someone tell me the pros and cons of identifying our cattle by different means and the cost. Hot branding doesn't cost much except for the man hours, but I am wondering about a method that is less work for guys and something that is still effective. I wonder about permanence as well. For instance, if someone were to steal one of our calves that was identified by an ear tag, that seems to me the tag could be removed and no way to recover that calf. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Headlight reflection from grill guard RTV1100cw

dimanche 9 avril 2017

Driving around this evening I realized that I have a lot of light reflecting back to me from the silver grill guard. Has anyone been bothered by this? I don't have the roof lights hooked up yet. With the light reflecting back it distracts from seeing for me. I was thinking of painting the back side of the guard flat black to see if it helps. Has anyone done anything to theirs?

Silver Queen corn herbicide

I have a small 50'x50' plot I'm going to plant some Silver Queen sweet corn in for supper eating.

I have some herbicide that is a few years old, it's been in the barn out of the sun..

Sim-trol 4L   &   Princep

Question is will the herbicide still be good...  and how would I figure how much to put down in a small plot like this..

I have the plot plowed & have spread P&K, lime, and have plowed it in, I will smooth it Monday and prep for planting.

I will be using my tank sprayer and can get the dirt wet.

I have read the label for each and both say it can be used as a pre emergent on corn, but not specifically for sweet corn.

Thanks, Chris

Harmony Herbicide in Rye - How long for results

Sprayed my Rye with .5 oz acre of Volta, which is generic Harmony. Label recommends .3 to .6 oz/acre. 5 days later I dont see any effects... Anybody have experience with this herbicide? I would have thought by now I would see something. Most of the "weeds" are the little purple violet type things that are all over this area in the spring. Also some chickweed and other small ground cover weeds.

Installing BHT-2 moisture tester in an inline baler - what is the cut side ?

Baler - MF 1840 inline , I have the pads mounted opposite each other , on the tension rails, top and bottom, instructions say mark the set of wires you have on "cur side " so you can plug into the monitor correctly. But the " cut side" is both top and bottom of the bale on an inline right?? So which is it then ??? I'm confused

A good rake problem...

After a few years wrestling junky rakes I gave in and bought a new 258 from the local NH dealer. It has the standard 100 teeth. First day on the job, had teeth bound up on strippers, felt it was an assembly issue and sent it back. Came back and worked fine. So this winter, I go to add the 155 tooth kit, and I see where the teeth are currently in the outside holes(2 standard teeth per). Everything I've seen says right tooth should be a reverse when using the fine tooth setup...and now I'm thinking that's why it jammed up at first.
So now they've "adjusted" the bars to where the wrong teeth are in the right place? If I set it up according to the manual, now the forward teeth are closer to and rubbing the bars instead of the reverse teeth. I shorted the dealer $300 as a thank you for this mess but am now thinking I'm still behind on my time and still not sure I want to bend everything back. There is no precision bending on these stripper bars and this is a brand new machine.
My options are, let it rub, bend on it, or send it back again.
I really don't want to send it back.

Silo King applicator

samedi 8 avril 2017

I called the Silo King rep for this area yesterday to set up a date for him to bring out an applicator to install on my new 1840 baler. I have two choices of applicators......either a Gandy applicator with a blower or the Sidekick auger meter applicator with blower. The main difference I understand between the two is the Sidekick applicator would allow me to be able to adjust the application rate on the go in the cab of the tractor while the Gandy I would have to get out and make a manual adjustment to change the rate.

I really don't know if I would use the on the go adjustment with the Sidekick applicator all that much because I would just set it for the maximum bales per hour I would bale and adjust my ground speed as the windrow got heavier/lighter which would keep me baling at the max capacity which I set the applicator for. For the on the go application rate adjustment I would still have to refigure how many bales per hour to know how much to change the rate setting.

There is about $1,000 difference in the price of the applicators. The Silo King rep is recommending that I go with the Sidekick applicator but I'm leaning more towards the Gandy. Thought I would see if anyone on Haytalk had used either applicator and which one you would suggest I get.

Teff vs. Italian Ryegrass

I am still trying to determine what we are going to plant this year.  We were going to plant twenty acres in RR alfalfa, but due to the higher cost and the fact that we have some oats left over from last year we decided to plant regular alfalfa with oats as a cover crop.  We also have twenty acres that we are going to plant either Teff or Italian ryegrass.  The Teff is $2.70/ pound, and the ryegrass is $1.69, so I am leaning towards the ryegrass, and the fact that we can plant it earlier than the Teff.

Now my seed guy recommends 15# per acre for Teff, and 20# per acre for the ryegrass.  Does that sound about right.

What do you guys think of the Sorghum sudan grass?  I can buy it for $1.59 per pound, but my seed guy said to plant it at 30# per acre.

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Kicker radio and pods

I just installed a Kicker radio and pods. I couldn't be more happy with the ease of the system, quality and expected durability. There is now room in the dash to install a receiver, this one goes in the cup holder. I got a simple, inexpensive, marine receiver, KCM2, and pods the hang from the ROPS. It has enough power that no other amp is needed. The only issue is the 4" pods have 1 1/2" hangers and the ROPS is 1 3/4", so you will either have to get 6" pods or get creative is hanging them. I'll post pics in a bit.

Hay Gone to Seed and Horses

Had a horse customer that got some hay last year from someone, second cutting, with foxtail in it and after a vet bill, they bought hay from me.

Is foxtail seed the only seed that can damage a horse's mouth? We've got some mixed grass hay coming this year, probably everything in it from early maturing/seeding bluegrass, orchard grass, fescue, a lot of sweet vernal grass - pretty much anything a broadleaf herbicide won't kill.

All of the above have their own maturing dates and some will go to seed before cutting.

Aside from foxtail, are any of these other grass seeds harmful to a horse?

Anybody use Sahara DG Herbicide

I have been spraying some fence rows with this sahara was told it is good stuff the soil is damp and the bushes and vines have been cut so spraying it before it gets too tall but Im not seeing much results, been over a week since we started mixing a pound with 7 gals water hand spraying but how long does it take it to work or will it work better when the weather warms up and the vines get more actively growing ? I sprayed it straight no suffactant or roundup mostly spraying at the ground and putting it out til you could see the spray dripping off the vegetation.  Thanks
