605SJ gearbox

mardi 31 juillet 2018

I have found a very nice 605SJ with new belts and what appears to be a low count baler. However it is 1000 PTO and all I have is 540. Someone told me that supposedly that turning it into a 540 gearbox with the 1000 PTO gearbox is not that hard. Has anyone done or heard of this?

Having trouble with IH 1100 sickle mower

I have an old carted 9' sickle mower and in the brome grass and brome mix that I cut I have troubles when the grass gets thick in that it wont cut.  Some of the grass is matted down and/or hasn't been cut for a year or two and that is part of the problem but on the clay mix and clay/gravel mix areas where the grass isn't as thick or tall it will cut great.  The thick stuff will gather on the mower and drag with it and then it doesn't cut patches and it ends up being a mess.  Would an old sickle style haybine cut this any better or do I need to move up to a rotary cutter or moco?  I only put about 10-15 acres for myself and am getting more smaller custom jobs all of the time, but low budget is the name of the game.

I did spend most of last summer changing all of the guards and am using all new smooth sickle sections and that made only a marginal difference.

New Holland Baler Connectors, what's up?

lundi 30 juillet 2018

What's up with these connectors?

They're just strange. It's like some sort of over engineered freak show.

Did New Holland find a warehouse of B17 hardware

and just use them for convenience.?

I don't know, I just don't understand this sort of thing.

I wanted to get a second connector to wire up

expensive. I'm beginning to think that the connectors

RTVX900G vs RTVX900W

The two models of RTVX900 the general and the worksite.
(RTVX900G - RTVX900W)

Can anyone explain the difference other than the fact about $2k in price. From all I see in person and the spec sheets, I cant see a darn thing. If not major difference then why the price diff?

Shopping all over the southeast for the best deal. I have 2 dealers saying there is no such thing as a General, a few other dealers clearly offer both in the 2018 lineup.

I do however see very few of the G out there.

any info appreciated.

late cutting hay varieties

I have a 20 acre hay field I have a difficult time cutting on time. I have to cross a low,wet area to get to this hay field. On a normal year I can not get to this field until mid July. Is there a hay variety that can be cut late July and not be over ripe? This year has been extremely wet and I am just now getting into that field. Now it is in a mix of smooth brome, clover, timothy and a little O. grass. I live in Central Mn.  Thanks- Dan

Sweating

Just picked up an in-line hay (round) hauling trailer, fantastic for getting bales off the field with just 2 of us. One in the loader and one can haul to dump spot and unload by himself. Question is, by pushing bales tight side (open) to side so soon after baling will they get a proper sweat? I am able to keep outer wraps from touching so have some separation between rows but curious on keeping them that tight prior to proper sweat. Was put up good at 16% +/-, all stored outside.
Thanks for any input

Is there such a thing as a service manual for the thrower?

Alfalfa coming back from the dead?

Last fall I had a field overseeded with alfalfa, timothy, and orchard grass with no till drill.  We had already went over this before, it was overseeded very heavily.

It was overseeded during a drought in September though we did get some rain soon after it was seeded. Then alfalfa started popping up. Then there was a 90 degree scorcher in October.

This spring, only alfalfa came up on the edge of the field where it was shaded from the tree line (surrounded by trees on 3 of the 4 sides). I figured it was a total loss.  It looked like the orchard grass did take though.

First cut happened during the last week of June (grass was well seeded out). About two weeks after that I fertilized (it's been dry here and I had to wait until there would be certain rain). Soil test at the beginning of the season showed the soil was very depleted. The day I fertilized there was a light sprinkle afterwards and the following day about 1/4" rain.

Now I see alfalfa popping up everywhere, it's very thick on the edges of the field, almost straight alfalfa. It's not thick in the middle of the field, but it's there now and wasn't there before.

Did the seeds go dormant and germinate once they got the nutrients? Will the alfalfa stand continue to thicken a bit (I expect the OG will) or is what I see what I get? The alfalfa plants coming up aren't going gangbusters by any means, they're about 4 inches tall. I suspect they're still deprived of micronutrients.

I hope to get a heavy application of dairy manure on it  next spring and hopefully that helps it take off.

Alfalfa coming back from the dead?

Leafhopper lately

I'm wondering the Alfalfa was cut 2 weeks ago if I should kind of plan on spraying leafhopper. According to the little bit of scouting I did they are not near as strong as what they were earlier. We got 17 inch of rain last week and it might dry off just enough before the next four days of rain start Monday afternoon... I'm wondering how strong your leafhopper pressure might be yet

Round baler opinions please

mercredi 25 juillet 2018

I'm running a 2014 JD 559, twine only, we make 5' x 5' bales usually, sometimes 5' x 4' for certain customers.

It's a good machine, I have yet to plug it, even at fairly high speeds on thick windrows.

I like it but I think I want to upgrade to a net wrap system.

I have priced the net wrap kit from the local JD dealer (about 11K) plus install.

The local Vermeer dealer is trying to sell me a new 2018 6650 Rancher, with net wrap AND twine capability.

They are offering a decent trade value for my JD.

Tempting.

Is the 6650 Rancher as good a baler as the JD 559?

Krone 42T vs well casing

I have an opportunity to pick up this rake that did not win the battle with the well. Biggest issue is that the collision resulted in a snapped pinion. It broke a few bolts too as it appears the entire rotor and pinion housing stayed with the well and the hitch and frame stayed with the tractor. List price on the ring and pinion set (the only way I see it listed) is $1960 (that’s a hard no) but I’m not terribly worried about that. Searching for parts deals and/or working with a machine shop is fun for me. The real question is what is the real world value of a decent 2009 42T rake? I think it’s cheap enough that I’m in on the deal regardless but I don’t need two rotary rakes and I’m not giving up my double so I need to make it worth resale.

Chain saw carrier for tractor

mardi 24 juillet 2018

I've been putting my new AG tires to good use and brush hogging areas I have not been to in years. Fun stuff. But I find to often I need assistance from my chain saw.

I've carried a 5 gallon bucket bungied to the rear of the ROP, but the chain saw is to big for that if I carry my other tools.

Thought of strapping it to the hood but have not found a way that would hold it in place and not scratch the hood all up.

How do you carry your chain saw while working on your tractor?

RTV900x ROPS Removal

I am giving serious thought to getting one of the new 900x rtv's. I am curious has anyone that owns one, or knows can one remove the ROPS?

reason for asking? I am buying it for property I have in another state, but want to store it in an enclosed trailer I have and be able to transport back and forth, Until we decide to relocate there one day. Its about 3" to tall to fit in the door. I could settle for a 500rtv and fit no problem. but really want the 900 Diesel.

Looking at one up close the other day at a dealer, I see where it does bolt in behind the seat, and also appears to have some bolts just under the edge of the dash. Just wondering if anyone has ever removed theirs. Calling dealer today they say its all welded in and not possible (sounds like sales guy with zero mech background and spouting liability talk)

any info appreciated.

Looking at new rtv k connect question

lundi 23 juillet 2018

Looking at getting a new rtv x1100. How does the k connect system attach to the rtv? Does the system hinder ground clearance? How much of a job is it to remove the entire system in the summer months. RTVX Transmission Shield

Some time ago, I added a receiver hitch extension and skid plate to the back of our X1120.

With the amount of brush this thing is operated in, it occurred to me that a transmission shield might save us a ton of money in transmission repairs.

Just curious if anyone had damaged the outside of the transmission and if anyone invested in the shield. Its roughly a hundred bones if you look hard.

Hired Hands

Dont know about you but finding someone that is dependable and willing to sweat/work is near impossible to find. Yes, they are often dumber than the rocks that I hit with my old Horse tiller but they show up...……..The latest go round with this one that I have had for 2 years now is that she cant read nor do math.

Friday I was out sweating the pasture below my wife's goat barn....yes a real barn....anyway, we are losing trees left and right due to the drought and who knows what else. Talking about old growth hickory and oak. Several were gonna fall on a fence line and another on the barn so had the tree guy come and help me who of course.....dropped a hickory on the fence line. Anyway, went down Friday to cut up an oak for splitting and to get it out of across the middle of the pasture......24" and 100' of good usable …...cut a bit then had to move a rotten branch with the tractor so shut down the saw. WOULDNT START.....PROBABLY 50 PULLS......I remember the saw doing this a while back and then it worked just fine again.....It's a 550 Husky and is usually a fantastic cutter and runner...So, about 2 AM, you know how it is, it dawned on me that the last time this happened the hired hand had mixed the gas and I had to dump that gallon and start over with all working fine...….The other day when I filled my tank in the saw it was a new gallon in the can...…………...F......ckn hired hand!!! Once again 8th grade drop out math and reading skills strike again....She cant read the can chart as to how much to mix and then cant figure the ratio as to how much...……..

S0.....just ordered on of course Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Opti-2-Gallon...eywords=opti+2

Have used this stuff for years but then the outfit I got it from in town went out of business so had to switch to bottles that you figure and mix..…….Yes, I know you can get the little bottles of pre mix but I like brands that I like...……...ANYWAY, the stuff works good and always started and ran just fine.....Witness a Stihl saw '87 vintage that is still running fine with 1000's of hours on it that is just great using the stuff for years...…..

So, now I can be happy with the hired hand, NOT be cussing HER as the machinery wont start, and get some work done,,,,,,,,which I am gonna go do....See you then...,God bless...….Dennis

Hoelscher Accumulator with Kubota M5 Tractor

Trying to see if someone is running this combo.  I just picked up a red Hoelscher 10 bale on edge accumulator that I've hooked up to my Kubota M5.  Discussions with the Kubota folks indicate the Kubota is an "open center" hydraulic system and I currently have the accumulator set up as a "closed system" as it came off of a JD 7610.  Accumulator is working but really puts a load on the tractor when the bed dumps.  It does fine when the bale arm moves the two bales on edge to the bed.  Just seeing if anyone runs "open center" on the accumulator and if it has made a difference.  I may try to switch the accumulator to open center later this week but in reading the instruction manual a hose needs to be switched along with a valve adjustments.  I just hate to break something that isn't really broken but also concerned about wear and tear on the tractor hydraulic valve.  Thanks for any help.

BX2660 Mower Rear Links Removal

I finally removed the Mower rear link from the frame by jacking up the floorboard. This allowed me to rotate the link arm upwards far enough so the triangular plate would pass through the triangular hole in the frame. This was not an easy fix as I thought I would possibly break something else in the process. But all well that ends well.

Accumulating Hay and Stacking Hay Recommendations

I bought a Maxilator which is an accumulator and grapple combo. A good unit but want to explore or consider options.  I do decent job with the accumulator but wondering about options. I know there are pull type accumulators and there are the trailer type and also the Kuhn type.

Have a second question here, using pallets. The Maxilator does the 10 bale group of four wide, two deep and two across the ends. That is about 7 feet wide and 8 feet long. Would like to stack hay 10 rows high. Wonder about placing the hay on pallets (which would be custom made) either on the ground or placing the pallets on the trailer and loading them there. Either way then using forks on fel to unload and place in barn and move as my be needed.  Also wondering about that size pallet what length forks to use.

Suggestions and experience are being asked for. No right answer or wrong ones.

Case IH 1490 sickle mower-conditioner

Just picked up a Case IH 1490 hydroswing haybine at an auction today for $900. Everything seems to be in good shape other than part of the arm on the knife assembly bar than needs to be replaced next to where it attaches to the wobble box. Should be an easy fix once I get the parts from the dealer. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this mower or one similar, I am currently using a NH 479 which is a 9ft cut and the new mower is a 12ft cut. I have no experience with a hudroswing however and would appreciate any advice, tips on what to watch for, and any general info on the differences in a hydroswing driven haybine compared to my current 479. Any input is appreciated, thanks

Ok I currently have a NH 648 SS baler with bale slice that is getting long in the tooth and is about time to make it the backup baler. Looking at some BR7070 and RB460 balers and there lot of crop cutters for sale it seems. How much power does it take to run the cutter in high moisture crops? Can the knives/cutter be removed to bale "normal" uncut hay? How is knife maintenance? Thanks

2nd Cut Fizzled Out?

My orchard grass looks like death warmed over! After first cutting I applied 100 lbs to the acre of 40-0-0-10s and had about 3/4” of rain a day or two afterwards, so I figured I was off to a good start but that was about the only rain in 4 weeks that it got and temps have been in the upper 80’s to low 90’s most of that time, so needless to say it looks pretty burnt. There is a few lower spots where it tried to grow but for the most part it’s 5-6” high and crispy. Should I try and mow it to get it growing again once it rains or just leave it be?

Question for mike10

vendredi 20 juillet 2018

I have a NH 650(auto wrap)round baler. I'm having problems with the hydraulic bale tension randomly working. Ran into this issue at the end of last season so I pulled the valve that controls the bale density apart. I couldn't find anything wrong with the valve or any other component for that matter and re-installed everything before the start of this season.

Fast forward to tonight and was a baling some light swaths and had problems again with the system not building any pressure. It does work if there is a large enough volume of hay going into the baler to trigger to the system. So at this point I'm slightly confused as to what is going on or where to start looking for the problem.

What is problem/s that I am encountering?

New Holland BR7060 2M Wide Pickup frame-auger problem

I have an older New Holland BR7060 Crop Cutter Round Baler. The 2M Wide Pickup frame around the feed augers seem to have a large gap and plugs up easily in moist hay. Dry hay does not have a problem, but wet hay get wrapped around the augers. I suspect it is due to this large gap. I have looked at newer models of the BR7060's and the gap is pretty tight. Is there a way of closing this gap back up if this is the root cause of moist hay wrapping around the augers? I did notice a new Frame Assembly (NH Part # 87045638) is listed on the parts diagram. It is a bit pricey, but the baler otherwise is in excellent condition. I am considering getting this new frame and feed augers in the hope it will solve the problem of wrapping damp hay around the augers. The S/N of my baler is Y8N040802. Anyone have any insight or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Need help with Massey 124 square baler

Helping a neighbor out with a Massey 124. He told me last time he used it he broke the needles. He put a different needle frame on it and new needles. This thing is so much different than the John Deere balers Im familiar with. I have the manual but the needle adjustment position is not very clear. The 3 hay dogs on the top are all froze up. I wonder if the needles broke due to the stuck hay dogs. Do these needle need to come way down and be closer to the knotters? Thanks

Used round balers - Vermeer vs JD

Hello all,
After about 5 seasons using my Hesston 540 to bale with I'm ready for an upgrade. I have no problems with the Hesston and it's been trouble free, it will make a nice looking bale but it will work you to death doing it.

I'm looking at upgrading to a 4x4 or a 4x5 baler with auto twine/tie and a monitor. My initial research has led me to look at the used Vermeer 504 i&L series balers or the John Deere 435,446,447,456 series balers. My main concern is I want to be able to make and tie 4x4 bales even if I get a 4x5 baler. Are the 435 Deere and 504 Vermeer able to do this? I sell alot of hay to small horse farms and 4x4's are what they prefer here. Dealer support is about the same for Vermeer and JD here and I would lean Vermeer since I have already done business with their dealer. NH is off my radar at this point due to poor dealer support in our area.
I'm making around 400-500 4x4's per year now so I figure a nice baler will last me a good while.

Give me your thoughts and opinions and I appreciate it very much.

RTV-X1120 Side Bolster

We purchased a new RTV-X1120 last week, and it came with a "bolster" on either side. My guess is the bolsters are intended to help keep the occupants inside the ROPS in case of roll-over.

The only photos I've seen on a Kubota website of RTV's with the bolsters are photos of the new RTV-XG850 Sidekick.

Construction appears to be steel stamping welded to the side rail which is covered by a molded plastic shell.

Postimages pictures disappearing

I know it has been a while since I have been around but life sometimes takes us in other than planned directions mainly our health. And this is a tractor forum so posting wildlife pictures probably don’t interest many.

But I did come back and it looks as though all my pictures have disappeared. I use post image and the do have a time option but I turn that off.

Sorry for the missing photos and I would put them back if I could but I can’t

Bit any advice for future I sure would appreciate it.

Haybuster Rock Pickers

Would like to hear your experience with Haybuster Rock-Eze rock pickers.  The rocks we want to relocate are on top of the ground, don't need to dig out.  Wondering if it would work on fields like this:

hay supply and prices in your area

I have been hearing tight supply and prices for hay starting to move higher, our area has had lower yields but prices have been steady. $5 ss and $40 to $60 for 4x5 rounds not a lot of big squares made around here. Cold dry spring hurt first cutting yields but rain has helped second cutting yields here. How are things in your area?

Best way to rake to speed up production

I am running into an issue raking this year, and not sure of the best way to fix it.  Put up hay on 100-125 acres a year, mostly rented ground, and some of it is pretty rough.  About 800 round bales, and 1000-1500 small squares.  Most of these fields are 5-10 acres, and oddly shaped, lots of hills.  I work full time, so speeding things up is pretty important.  Is usually just me, but dad will mow or rake for me when he can.  Usually I mow 5+ acres at a time, what I can get back up in an evening.  I'll then go in and rake the night/day before baling, and bale the next day.  I have been using 2 roll a bar rakes on a double hitch, so that does speed things up some.  If dad rakes, he usually only will use one rake, and double up windrows.  This year we are really late finishing up 1st cutting because of the wet spring, and a lot of this hay is pretty big.  We round bale with a Krone KR 125.  What I have been running into is if I set up my double hitch to rake double rows, it will plug up at least one rake, and if I just single windrow, I have to run the baler tractor faster than I would like on the rougher ground and hills.  Double windrows make baling faster, but if the windrows get too big, the baler doesn't like them and will spill some hay off the sides.  Not a big problem other than it will leave hay on the field, and I don't like that.  I saw some folks baling yesterday, the same big first cutting that we are dealing with, baling huge 25' windrows.  I would have my baler plugged in the first 3'.  I know a rotary rake would solve a lot of problems, but trying to work with what I have until the right deal comes along.  Mower is a 7'10" Frontier, so about 15 feet of hay or so seems to work pretty good.  To me, an 8 or 9' rake takes too long.  Raked about 7-8 acres last night on a rough hillside with 2 rakes in about 1 1/2 hours.  Any suggestions for making good windrows in big hay, and keeping things moving along?

These are the results I had when broadcasting and packing BT into an existing pasture. More of a feedyard really. It's where I finish out the steers in the fall. Baler plugging

So I bought a used vermeer 665 rancher. And sometimes in big windrows it pushes hay infront of the pickup. I think what causes this is the tractor axles bunches it up in a big ball then it get free then getinfront of the pickup.

If i slow down to about 4.5 mph it doesnt do it. But when i go about 5.5 mph it has happend twice. I have to back up far enough to push the pile down with the loader then it will go into baler.

Anyone else have this problem?
When going 5.5 in big windrows it makes a very nice tight perfect shaped bale. Am i pushing it too hard? First baler so other than the about 700 bales i have made with this one i have no prior experance.

I have 2 neighbors one has a 568 deere and the other a 569 and they both said "that yellow baler sure makes a pretty bale".

Has me thinking maybe i need to adjust my rake to gather only 2 cutter passes rather than 3 if i am in heavy hay. Said field made 4.5 bales an acre 4x5.5 with pressure cranked all the way up. Using a 10'6" cutter.

Also goig that fast most of my bales end up 67" when it is spose to be a 66" bale. Vermeer dealer said most people run them like that where you are cramming it in so fast you end up with a 67" bale. He said dont worry about it ahouldnt hurt it? Whats yalls take?

Front PTO

Hi, newbie here.
Was looking for a little help if possible.
I have a Yanmar 187D and have been looking for an electric PTO for a belly mower for this machine. I believe a 186 is the same and not sure if there are others. I also wondered if any J.D. PTO's might work ?
I thought maybe someone on here had run into this before or maybe knows of a 187 parts tractor somewhere ? I've already talked to Hoye, but have not investigated others yet. Any information or leads would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Yanmar Bretherin.

New Holland BR7060

Very frustrated!!!! Bought a 2013 BR7060 baler and have had nothing but problems. Only 2700 bales. Keep running baler and computer wont grow. Have to reset the bale sensor, calibrate and it will bale about 10 bales and acts up again. Dealer put new sensor on and still having same problem. Dealer said if don't fix may need new wiring harness from tractor to baler which is very expensive just to test with no guarantee. When unhook wiring harness and back in goes error full bale. Any suggestions. So frustrated

pre emergent weed killer in Coastal Bermuda

lundi 16 juillet 2018

Saturday was looking for some help on our lawn and stumbled onto a youtube video on Bermuda lawn care. Found it interesting. The person called himself "DOC" and that is really all know about him and the video.  He went over what you should be doing to your bermuda lawn in each month based upon where he lived in Georgia. Dec, Jan and Feb...do nothing. He talked about how you should scalp bermuda when it reached a certain green up point to get rid of all the dead grass. Made me think of the burning off the field. He covered several other points but the one I want to ask about. He really recommends pre emergent use at least every three months. I have used pre emergent in row crops, and when I had Coastal Bermuda sprigged but never used it in my yard and never thought about it in my hay field. I really felt dumb for not ever considering it...his reasoning really made sense.

What is recommendation of pre emergent on coastal bermuda and your thoughts or suggestions.

Oil Pressure Alarm

dimanche 15 juillet 2018

I have a 7200.  During the winter I had my dealer work on it, transmission issues and a wiring harness because mine was dry rotated an cracked and shorting out the switch that operates the PTO shaft.  Most of the instrument panel didn't work at various time.  Long story, but, the general manager had his guys build an new harness for it. instead of purchasing one for 1700.00.   It has worked great until today.  Oil pressure alarm would come on and go off.  I was in a very rough field.  The oil is new in the tractor, and full.   Could I have a short?  Where do I look?  What color wire?

I would think it could be a loose wire at either end possibly.  Any help would be appreciated, really need to be baling not put it back in the shop.

Thanks

Scott

Source for disc mower blades

Looking for a good source for disc mower blades for a 416 new holland. This is the first year running a disc mower (previously only had sickle). I got some from shoup but if you have a better source or have found something you like let me know. I would like to try some flat blades if I can find them. I mow everything from small grains, sudex, millet, mixed native grasses that can vary from very thick to very thin light hay. Thanks

PTO Shaft has annoying metal band

samedi 14 juillet 2018

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the metal band on the outer

PTO shaft is for?

After some pretty good swear words, I figured out how to take the covers off

my PTO shaft. This is from a NH BR7050 baler.

I kept thinking that if you rotated the shafts in some special way

that it would slider together. This darn thing is heavy, and it was too long

for my situation.  And it sounded like metal hitting metal.

PTO.JPG

So, I wanted to put the covers back on.  And I was wondering if this thing

needs to be there for any reason.  And I'm wondering if it can be tapped off.

This baler is new to me.  The 3rd bale was OK. The first 2 were practice I guess.

I was so worried that this thing was going to spin itself apart and collapse into

a pile of expensive junk. But everything worked pretty well, except for the PTO thing.

If anyone wants to help, thanks.

JD sickle mower

I mowed my usual spot, then I tried my low spot then was loaded with grass. Must’ve been too bumpy. I seen the breakaway arm come apart so I went to back up and put it together. I noticed a little surprise here. Glad I cut what I needed to today.

Is this a common break?

Vermeer 505L problems/question

Just bought this baler and have couple questions. How can I tell if this baler has the drop and go option as far as not shutting the PTO off when ejecting the bale? When opening the tailgate the hyd density gauge does nothing, I screwed the valve in just in case for some reason the previous owner backed it off during the off season but I still get nothing. As far as leaks go on the density system I'm not sure this thing hadn't seen a water hose or air gun in sometime. I did clean it up but two days later and I don't see no leaks. I know this has been asked many of times on the forums and have found the recharge info on a 605K and was curious if the the 505L is the same, if not would anyone know how. Thanks

Horse hair wrapping around mower blades

vendredi 13 juillet 2018

I don't even have horses!  Neighbors horses spend time at the fence between us and evidently, that's where they like to shed.  I noticed a lot of hair clumps when I was mowing, and then the mower stopped.  I had to cut out horse hair every time I made a round near that fence.  Is this a common problem?  And is there any way to clear it before mowing?  Is it going to be a problem if I ever get hay worth cutting?

What to plant for winter forage?

South Michigan, small 1/2 to 1 acre area I seed every year for winter forage. Really it's more late fall forage since they get on it in mid November. Rape does amazing on it every year, is there any sort of grass that might come in with it? I should have kept track of what I've tried over the years but I don't remember much of anything coming up except the rape which totally takes over. How about cereal or annual rye, any certain type of oats?

KUHN GRS 24 tedder/rake

Hey folks!

Got a big "tine" problem.

I keep breaking tines. It is a 3pt hitch model.

I use it for both tedding and raking. I am going through 2 or 3 tines every 20 or so acres. Overall the fields are in pretty good shape but there are a number of rough spots in one of them.

Thought I might be too low and have adjusted up a little. IDK.

Any Kuhn Tedder rake secrets?  I read on the line something about keeping the tines from spreading by binding them ? Might be time for an upgrade.

567 baler net wrap issues

My neighbor has does my baling for me.  He has a John Deere 567 mega wide, silage special baler with cover edge wrap.  Yesterday was the first time he had to change the net wrap.  The baler worked fine before we changed rolls.  Now we are having problems with net wrap wrapping properly.  He wasn't wrapping at all.  I think this was because we hadn't threaded the wrap correctly.  Then we tried one more bale before dark and it made a big rip in the wrap and the bale was busting out.  What could be the cause of this??  Does cover edge need the plastic spacers in the ends of the rolls??

JD 530 Baler - gate not latching

I had a leaking gate cylinder on my JD 530 baler that I thought was causing the latch to drop down too soon and preventing the gate from closing.  I removed the cylinder and had the JD shop rebuild the cylinder which they did in just a few days.  I have replaced the cylinder and the gate lifts well but the latch on that side of the baler still drops too soon and keeps the gate from latching.  I have run the cycle 5 or 6 times and have loosened the hose fittings to allow any air that might be in the cylinder to escape.  It seems like the left cylinder is doing all the work and the right one seems to drop more quickly on its own letting the latch drop before it should.  Anyone have any ideas on this one? Thanks!

Haybine knife for cutting greenfeed

Deliver distance for small amounts of SS bales

My son just had a request to deliver 100 bales of hay just over 70 miles.  He knows that we sell hay with two prices (one price here and one higher price at their place, not a 'delivery' price, just a higher price ;)).  He quoted her $4 a bale higher price (thinking of scaring her off) and she said yes (cash sale, no check).  And she want to know is there anyway to get two hundred more bales   BTW, yes this is legit, she is a friend of another horse customer.

To me this seems insane, but is this just a MY area that has this type of insanity?

losing bushing on haybine again... what am I doing wrong?

I've been using an old NH 469 and last year and this year I wore out the bushing for the blade head NH PN 134182. These suckers cost $42 each. Last year was my first year with the cutter and the guy I bought it from didn't take great care of anything so I sorta figured it was just worn out. This year, after about 40 acres later, it went out again. I assume there are "best practices" or something to look for that might cause premature wear on these, or do they really only last so long? It's been weedy mulch hay but IMO nothing too crazy. Before I curse at the machine I figure I should curse at myself (but it does make me want a discbine pretty bad)

Round bale stacking w self leveling loader

Apologies in advance if this has been discussed- I could not find it

Can anyone give me some tips, pointers and advice on stacking round bales with a mechanical self leveling loader please?

I’m using a JD 542 on a 5525 with 4’ 800 lb grass bales. It’s making me crazy. I have a hole in the barn and I have wore out 20 bales. Granted my bales are to soft but I never had this much problem with my old tractor.
I would like to stack two flat and one round (mushroom or double rick I have heard it called) in long rows then tarp. I finally gave up and stacked in 3-2-1 pyramid

I’m having problems setting the bales both on end and the round and getting out of the bale as well
I’m not able to tamp the bales together to get a nice tight stack either. As I said this batch is soft but still

Any help??!

Rookie Opeating a Small Square Baler for the First Time

I've been haying with a NH 688 round baler for four years now and I wanted to see if I can develop a market for small squares with local horse people. I bought a used Hesston 4600, added a hydraulic cylinder for the pickup, did the maintenance checks and greased 'er up. and after getting most of our hay as round bales I proceed to try my hand at small squares haymaking. I promptly plugged up the Hesston! And I mean plugged it. I waded into a big windrow with low pto speed and high ground speed and within less than 10 ft, broke  the shear bolt on the suffer fork! This happened at 8:45 pm last night so I figured I'd fix it this morning.

I used a bale hook to try to clear it from the front. No way that was going to work. Fortunately the forming chamber has an removable access panel at the rear of the baler and I removed that and found a wad stuck in the lower left hand corner. 2 1/2 hours later I got it cleared. Started up again and remembered "high pto speed, low ground speed" and we were off and baling.

Now I notice the bales are falling apart as they come off the chute. It turns out the knot connecting the twine balls got stuck in one of the needles and broke so only one knotter was tying. I fixed that and finished baling. I monkeyed with the bale density control (hydraulic) and it's making nice bales now, just a s I run out of hay to bale.

What I learned was that a small square baler is a more complicated beast than a big round baler. The pickup has a much lower capacity and you have to operate it differently that the more high capacity pickups on  round balers. The knotter mechanism is also more complex than the net wrap system on the round baler. It takes a different skill set to operate and maintain a small square baler than it does a big round baler.

I thought some of you long time hay shakers would get a kick out of hearing about my rookie problems.

Kuhns accumulator dumping early

Hey guys,

First season with the (new-to-me) kuhns 1036F and I have noticed that my dump gate is triggering early fairly frequently (head numbers, I want to say 1 in 20 groups), most of the time it's missing the last bale, but occasionally 5 or 7 bales drop. Everything is greased, bales are 36" long, so nothing is over-extended and tripping it that way. Any thoughts on adjustments there?

i found a piece of black heater hose about six feet long laying in the road. the OD is just a nice snug fit to the inside diameter of my exhaust pipe. i carry a big metal spoon with a loooong handle with me and when i see a fresh gopher mound i stop and open the tunnel , stick one end of the hose in my exhaust and the other end into the tunnel. i then kick some of the dirt from the mound over the hose and let the RTV idle for a few minutes. when i am done i pull the hose out and put a dirt plug into the tunnel and throw the hose in the back. i have almost completely freed 80 acres of gophers in a couple of months spending about 20 min a day.

Calling on Bermuda Experts

OK Bermuda Guys,

I've been posting pics of the progress of my newly sprigged fields (sprigged in March).  I have one field that has really taken off.  In fact I am close to complete coverage with the Bermuda about nearly knee deep.  I was going to bush hog one more time but....

I was going to wait until fall for a cutting but this field has really taken off.  I had a coastal field sprigged years ago and took the first cutting off of it after about 6 months.

Will this harm the Bermuda taking a cutting after only 4 months?  The type of Bermuda is Tifton 44.

Putting NH 499 head on a Heston windrower

lundi 9 juillet 2018

This is my first year with my Heston 6610. I went from a pull type mower to this older self propelled because of my small odds field shapes. The head on the 6610 is my least favorite part it is 16 foot and single sickle. I would like to put on a 499 head because 12 foot would.be a better width for me also I believe the 499 will be able to cut faster to make up for smaller head. I should just be able to hook hydraulic drive right to new header right? How bad of idea is this?

Having issues with JD 348 tying

dimanche 8 juillet 2018

First time out for the year and having issues with the knotters . First both sides would not tie, it was the tucker fingers not going to the home position. After I figured that out the right side was not working. I am using 9000 twine on one side and 9700 on the other (9700 is purple and yellow for weed free for the state of ND). When I put it away last fall every thing was working great. I switched the two different size twines from right to left to see if that was the problem, it is still missing on the right. I adjusted the twine disc they were both retarded but it always baled good so l left them alone. Here are some pictures let me know where I am needing adjustments.

Once I got it home I made up a couple jumpers to a battery charger directly to the actuator to rule out any electrical problems. When I first hooked it up it seemed to be locked up but broke loose and ran both directions after that just fine. I could tell the motor was laboring when I first hooked it up for a couple seconds then it was just fine. There’s not a whole lot to bind up on the baler so I don’t think that was it. I feel the actuator was stuck. I did have another relay go bad so I wonder if this actuator is drawing too much current and burning up the contacts in the relay? It’s weird how now I can run it back and forth without issues. Does this sound like I should just replace the thing? I would think if it was a wore bushing or something inside the actuator it wouldn’t be so intermittent. Anyone have similar issues with one before?

RTV 1100 2” Receiver Mod

Just picked up a 2008 RTV 1100 and it doesn’t have 2” receivers. Don’t know why Kubota would do such a thing but has anyone else modded their RTV 1100 to a 2” receiver front and or back?

Thinking of just welding a sleeve on top of the smaller hitch vice cutting it off for the rear and welding a 2” receiver onto the bumper for the front.

2846a belt tracking issue

Having troubles with the far right belt tracking over a little too far to the right. Looking at the rear it appears all belts are slightly to the right maybe by 1/2” at best. Up front they are good. It seems the far right belt for sure has a bigger gap than the rest telling me Only it is tracking farther right. No buildup on any rollers. The book shows to pull the belt and flip it around. Anyone have a idea if I should try this or just tweak the rollers a little? My second question is that it wore into the roller arm guide and wore through it. Then hay got behind it causing it to slice into the belt on the edge. How hard is this wear plate or guide to change out? Any help is appreciated.

Hoelscher accumulator arm modification

Hoelscher sells a pushover arm modification manufactured by g.l.nause that fits the newer black Hoelscher accumulators. Hoelscher can tell you what serial number starts the line that require no additional modification to install. I installed The arm on my black accumulator with no problems.
I also have a 2000 red Hoelscher and installing the new modified push over arm requires some work. Or you can buy a new arm. I decided to try using the original arm and here’s how it worked out.
The square tubing arms extend into the triangular horizontal piece so after cutting off the front of the arm to the proper length one must cut an access hole on the opposite side to allow a cutting torch inside to carefully remove the tubing from both sides.
I then used an air drill to clean and deburr the rough edges. This has to be very smooth to allow the guide rail to slide. I thought I was home free until discovering the area within the horizontal piece is too small for the guide rail. The guide rail consists of tubing and a welded piece of channel. Carefully cut off the channel rail with a cutoff grinder wheel. Then remove equal amounts from both legs of the channel down to about 2.10” tubing & channel width. I tacked the channel several times and slid it in and out of horizontal piece before it worked.
I haven’t had a chance to really punish the modifications with thousands of bales, but initially I’m pleased
