Boss Snowplow Shoes

jeudi 31 janvier 2019

I have a RTV 1100c with a Boss XT plow from Kubota dealer here in NH
The machine works great and does what I expected from Kubota. However the plow shoes are junk. First of all, the reason you need plow shoes is that you are plowing a dirt, gravel or stone driveway or area. The truncated cone design of the Kubota shoes simply doesn’t have the surface area to support the heavy plow and just digs long ruts in the driveway. I have tried to look for other shoes only to find that each manufacturer has a different shaft size for the shoe....duh ...go figure. Has anyone had this issue, and what was your fix. I have thought of having some broad “skis:” welded to the shoes ....but this is a bandaid.
Any help here?

Massey 1840 square baler

New to hay talk. Probably starting a little controversy but I’m looking at buying a new massey 1840 but hesitant do to what I’ve read about the stuffer forks not having enough capacity and shearing bolts. I live in ne Minnesota wondering if anyone in wi or Mn run these bailers and their thoughts.

Skid Steers

We have a 2013 Bobcat S550 and are looking at trading it off on a newer S550 or Cat 232D or 236D, more than likely go with joysticks and might look at tracks but I don't think we will.  I am wondering what people think of these or other ones, with joysticks and without.

Twine around hay seems to stop short on the right/passenger side. The adjuster is all the way to the end has wing nut to change positions. see picture and maybe I can fix it, hay does drop off slightly when moving it.[attachmenDSCN3378.JPG t=79194:IMAG2714.jpg] tried to post picture hopefully they appear when clicked on. Pasture leases

Our little non-profit happens to own 160 acres of irrigated pasture.  An organic dairy has leased the property for the last decade for yearlings, but their business is shrinking and they're consolidating.  We have a new interested tenant, willing to pay a year round lease, and pay for irrigation costs, move wheel lines, etc.  He trades in beef in the growth stage (500lbs to adult).

What's a fair price for an arrangement like this?  We're in S. Oregon, where the first crop of grass is free and any further growth requires irrigation.  Pasture grass is in fair shape, fencing/cross fencing is intact, wheel lines are functional.  Good flood plain soil.

Newbie to hay - what equipment to buy?

Grew up on a farm my whole life, but never cut any hay myself.  I have 50 acres of grass hay ground that I would like to manage myself.  I  own a Kubota M7040 (67 hp) and need to buy some equipment.  Planning on putting up some small squares (600) and the rest rounds.  Ground is mostly flat, except 1 field (5 ac) which has a pretty good hill.

Considering the following:

 - Disc mower-  size/brand recommendations?

 - Wheel rake - 8 wheel?  Depending on mower size?  How do you decide?

 - Round Baler - considering doing smaller bales for easier loading and marketing to horse and acreage folks

We have a local custom small square baler with racks, so I won't need one of those.  Any advice is appreciated.  Located in Central IA

We have lost the lease on the building that we operated our bale slicer in and had to shut it down.  Lost the help we used to operate it and was looking to sell the machine now.  Wondering if there is any interest out there.  This is the link to the same machine.  https://youtu.be/o7aTvXC7pHw        Thanks.  It is on youtube under Big Bale Slicer the phone number listed is for the previous owner.

Krone V150 xc

dimanche 27 janvier 2019

Bought this baler last year, overall very pleased. From time to time the tailgate latches do not pull up into place. The latches are attached to the bottom of the tailgate cylinders, as these are single acting cylinders, does anyone know how they draw up the latches after the tailgate closes? The problem occurs intermittently, all pivot points cleaned and lubricated. Any thoughts appreciated.

Drilling Alfalfa.

I would like to drill some alfalfa into a healthy existing stand of Orchard grass. When is the best time to do this and how successful can one be? I have drilled Orchard into alfalfa several times successfully, but I never have tried the opposite approach.

Alfalfa/Orchard Grass Broadleaf Herbicide.

Has anyone had success at killing winter annuals in alfalfa/orchard grass with anything other than Butyrac 200. I have quite a outbreak of a hodge podge of winter annuals in one of my alfalfa/orchard grass fields and the weeds are larger than I like for Butyrac. They are not large but are larger than the recommended spraying for butyrac.

Rtv 1100c sounds like it’s shifting

So when you start to move the 2016 1100c is louder and vibrates more until you get up to speed and let off the throttle a little bit. Then it smooths out and gets qouiter. Kinda like when the clutches shift on a sled or wheeler. Fluids are full. Is this normal any ideas why it does this?

Towing a bale loader

Hey guys, what I believe is a really stupid question but I have no idea.
How do I tow a NH 471 bale loader up the highway?
I am looking at an old one that has been stored for a long time and no one at the farm knows anything about it, it’s always been there.
A quick look shows where that linkage is tow to when picking up bales but I’m not sure that would be good at speed. Also, it has skids on the front and the hitch is flexible so it would rip the tarmac up good and proper.

Calf disappointment

Well my cow had her first calf today, some time after lunch I think. I wasn't home and when I got home @5pm, she was standing by a black pile so I went in and sure enough the calf was dead, she was nugging and talking to it and wouldn't let mess with it much. The calf's head was bent back and the tongue was sticking out eyes open and a little stiff, calf was dry but didn't look like it moved from the time it hit the ground.. I sort of think it broke it's neck when it hit the ground..

I didn't see any sign of afterbirth but the area around the calf was well worn from mama going round & round it so it could have been their but trampled now.. The calf was 1 month early ( 9 months )

What signs will I see if something is still inside mama like afterbirth, she is still heavy looking and I'm a little worried their might still be another calf in their..

Problem is I don't have a head gate to confine her but I can take her up the road where their is one if she needs checking by a vet..

What should I be looking for in the next few days???

Thanks, Chris

jeudi 24 janvier 2019

I found a pretty well used 2010 Kubota RTV1100 on a government auction website and decided to place a bid. I didn't meet the reserve price and the auction ended with me as the high bidder. I assumed that the auction was a lost cause and moved on with my life, but then a week later I received an e-mail asking if I would like to purchase for my bid price. I accepted. Final sale price was a hair over $2500 after taxes, fees and all that good stuff.

The machine has definitely seen better days. I was told that it needed a new engine by the selling party, but they had received the prognosis from their local Tractor Supply store. Considering I have never visited a Tractor Supply that had a service department I was highly skeptical that a new engine was actually necessary.

Once I got it home and charged up the stone dead battery, the engine turned over fine and fired right up, but it did have a very audible knock that got louder as the engine ran longer. I feared a spun rod bearing so I dropped the oil pan and inspected all three bearings. Cylinders 1 and 2 didn't look great, but they didn't look bad and certainly were not in a condition that would cause rod knock. Cylinder 3 looked excellent so I decided to put everything back together, change the oil and filter and focus my attention elsewhere.

After firing up the engine again, I popped the valve cover to see if there was anything obvious underneath. I found nothing. Everything looked to be operating as normal and while I didn't check the valve lash with a feeler gauge, nothing seemed excessively out of adjustment that would cause the knock I'm experiencing.

Next test was while the engine was running, I cracked open each line to the fuel injectors to see if there was any change in operation or tone. Opening the lines to injectors #1 and #2 caused the engine to bog down and shot diesel fuel all over the place, but the knock remained. Opening the injector line to #3 caused fuel to shoot everywhere and the engine to bog down, but the knock decreased. The more I opened the fuel line, the more the engine bogged down, the more fuel hit me in the face and the more the knock vanished.

Now I'm faced with figuring out what this means. I'll keep you all posted.

Meyer feed wagon ?’s

mercredi 23 janvier 2019

Currently using a NH 818 forage wagon that we removed the roof on to feed silage when the tmr wagon isn’t required. It has definitely earned its keep for the 20 or so years that we’ve used it and now it’s nearing time for replacement.

Looking to replace it with something new or gently used soon with about the same capacity and preferably a little heavier built. Up in Alberta forage wagons (new or used) are as rare as flamingos here.

Browsing the net and came across Meyer wagons and they look pretty good and the specs would work for us. Looking for opinions on them and how they would compare what we currently use. I believe Badger made the NH wagons. Thanks for any input since nobody local uses these wagons but they are much more common south of the 49th.

What did she get into

What a day; late yesterday we fed the cows because we were planning on making a trip down the Craig Colorado, but because they were supposed get snow we did not go.  Well we decided we should go check on the cows.  We seen one cow that looked like she had wooden tongue, and I seen one that was lame the day before.  We get all 108 head in and sort out all the ones that were lame, and doctored them.  You think that finding the cow with the wooden tongue would have been easy to spot; she did not have a number tag.  That cow was one of my uncles and most of his had a tag in each ear, well except the one we were looking for.  After going through all of the cows we sorted off my cows and all the cows with two tags.    This left us with about a dozen head or so.   By this time our stomachs had thought that our throat had been cut, so after lunch we went out I finally found the cow we wanted.  Got her loaded up and off the vet we go.  It turns out it was not wooden tongue; she must of got something wrapped around her tongue, and damn near cut the end of it off.  The vet cut it off and gave her a couple shots, by this time she was wanting to see someone; not a happy camper at all.  Had one hell of a time getting her loaded, and after getting her home we did not get her into the pen we wanted her in.  I am hoping that she will be in there tomorrow morning, and maybe not on quite with those that caused her so much pain.

Deutz hay rake

Hey guys. Finally got my baler going. Couldn’t get parts but with a very understanding machine shop and some mods I’m back in business. Many thanks to mike10 and all the guys that sent through parts diagrams!
I’m now looking at a rotary rake, a Deutz Fahr KS85DN. Even though it’s second hand (like all my gear) I was wondering if anyone has one and what I should look for when viewing it. It’s a fair hike to go and check it out but finding a second hand one in our area is like finding a needle in a haystack. The guy has receipts for all the bearings and journals recently being overhauled and it looks ok but I haven’t heard of this model before and not sure if they were a lemon model or just not popular in comparison to the big name brands of rake.
A wise old elf told me to go new as the only time people sell a rotary rake is if something is stuffed. Truth or old wives tale?

Drag type bale accumulator suggestions.

lundi 21 janvier 2019

I am getting ready to build a small square bale accumulator that I would like to pull behind my baler but would also like to be able to pull it behind a ATV or truck if need be. So with that said what type of drag accumulator seams to work the best one that the bales drop out of the baler into the accumulator or one that drop bales onto ground and then go into the accumulator. Just looking for people that use them and what to good and bad if each is.

First year in review with Coastal Bermuda

Well Friday night was told all of crop has been sold. Boy what emotional swing for me in selling the hay. First only 15 acres of first full year of hay and did not sell any first year, gave away that single crop to family and friend.  Wanted honest feedback on it.

I thought would sell maybe 25% in the field. NOT one bale was sold that way.  Began to wonder what was wrong. Read comments here on when hay sold and some seem to sell full crop with never loading in barn. Have two friends who also raise hay, (with one being my friend who does my cutting and baling) that said wait till grass dies. When I learned Friday night our crop was totally sold and next year already being asked for maybe twice what we had this year. Now how to produce best quality and amount of hay possible.

We have been pleased with feedback on the hay.

I think our operation has proven there is many ways for a hay operation to make it, albeit only one season.   It is made up of three different parties (each long term friends) who each brings a part that makes it better operation with each wiling to offer help and equipment to help each other any way possible.

So many here have been a help,  Don't ever think the wisdom and knowledge you share does not help others you are never aware of.

Replacing RTV900 U joint

Is there a thread that provides specifics about how to remove the front drive shaft on the RTV900? The U joint is kaput.

I have removed the spline/yoke pin on one side but there is no drive shaft movement after doing this.

Does this require removal of the center bearing support?

Hard to believe a Google search was not helpful.

How many acres can you run

I realize there are lots of variables including location, climate, equipment, employees, storage, type of bale, etc.

We make almost unanimously small squares in IL, mostly alfalfa or mix acres. One baler/accumulator setup, might go with 2 in the future.

Whats the most bales a guy can put through a small square baler in a season, in the midwest?

One of my biggest concerns with lots of acres would be a wet/humid year in which dry hay is a constant fight.

Those guys wet wrapping big squares or rounds can sure cover some ground. I'm just curious more on guys trying to make dry hay.

Krone EC400

vendredi 18 janvier 2019

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a Krone EC400 mower. Particularly what size tractor would be required to handle it, in the field and on the road? I'm concerned about how it would handle on sloping ground as well as during road travel and about how harsh the tail swing is when turning. I have looked at the mfg. Specs but looking for any real life experiences. Thanks in advance.

Grain Cart to Feed?

I hope the idea works and others have tried it an it did.

I bought a grain cart with auger. I intend to use it for bulk pelleted feed. I have two self feeders but they are inside cattle pens. One is creep feed for calves, the other for wet cows. It is a pain to get the feeders in and out when the ground is muddy. I want to pull the grain cart to the feed store to get bulk feed. I hope to auger some into the feeders and also feed in the pasture troughs.

I bought a Caldwell 400 bushel cart. The tall sides bolt on. I was thinking of removing those so I could look back over into the bed. I would have to manufacture a cradle for the auger to rest as it is made on the front panel. I could still carry as much feed as I needed for a while.

I want to put some kind of extension on the auger down spout to channel feed into concrete troughs in the pasture. My grandfather made one out of "tote sacks" sewn together when I was a kid. He had it on our old Gehl grinder. I like that idea because it is flexible.

We brought it home yesterday and hooked it up today and am pleased so far.

Am I nuts to think this will work? Any ideas on a better way to make a downspout for the chute?

2009 RTV 900 Steering Problems - No Steering

This forum has been a great resource so I hope someone can help me again. I installed rear tracks on my 2009 RTV900 and was zipping around the field to test out the traction in about 2" of snow. After about 10 minutes I lost all power steering. I could turn the wheels manually left to right without any problem. No response at all from the steering wheel. The steering wheel does stop after several turns in both right and left directions.

I pulled the power steering pump but didn't disassemble it. When I turned the shaft manually fluid shot out into my eye.

I then drained all the fluid from the reservoir. It was ugly, so I thought maybe that was the problem. I was gravity draining it at first but then decided to reconnect the low pressure line and attach a spare hydraulic hose to the high pressure port. so I could run some fresh fluid through to clean out the tank. The pump did pull out the rest of the fluid, but slowly - like a steady stream. When I reconnected the high pressure line I could see fluid spilling out into the reservoir from the return line - so presumably the circuit is still intact.

How much 'pressure' should the pump actually produce?

I reinstalled the pump. I then removed each line from the steering cylinder individually and turned the wheel with the line detached. Fluid did stream out about as fast as when I had the high pressure line removed from the pump. With the engine not running I can turn the wheels left to right and fluid will squirt out of the cylinder ports.

With everything reconnected and the front end off the ground there is an occasional, weak jitter of motion from the wheels.

So it seems like fluid is going where it's supposed to, right? And the pump must be working to some extent, right?. And the steering controller seems to be passing fluid to the outlet ports, right? And the seals in the steering cylinder must not be completely shot or else I wouldn't have any pressure when moving the wheels, right?

So what am I missing?

Thank you.

Disc plow for RTV 1100

I need to buy a disc plow to take care of already established food plots and to create new ones. Any suggestions? I don't have a three-point hitch on my Kubota. The dealer in Brundidge, Alabama told me that hitch would cost 700 dollars with installation. Way too much. If I buy that I won't be able to buy the plow. So I'll need a plow with some manual device to raise and lower the discs.

I have established orchard grass but really suffered last year with the rain so I have to overseed this spring.  also did so last fall with highly variable results, 100% germ in one row, nothing sometimes right next to it.  So anyway, I am going to monitor the long range starting Feb 15 to seed as early as I can without frozen ground for two weeks after seeding.  Probably a mix of 15# of Persist og in the big box and 5+# hulled NVS og in the small box that is dropped on top of the ground but pressed tight.  Drill is Great Plains 10' NT.  My question, if I spray prowl after first cutting will I control any summer annual grass like goose, foxtail or crabgrass or will it already have germinated.  My thinking is that after first cutting with more access to light, that some, maybe a lot will germinate but checking with others to see what their results have been.

Brutal year here for paddock ruination and hayfield losses with the wet weather last summer then lots of summer annuals came in all of which died at frost so those bare spots are going to be easy pickens come march.  hopefully if I get the seed on early, I will get full cover before summer annuals start to germinate.

Hello Again!

It's been a while since I've posted on this great forum.

Just wanted to share that my 2011 RTV 900 XT continues to support our farm every day. Still on the original tires and battery. Have replaced rear u-joint once and have had some issues with the water thermister.

Folks for a piece of equipment used every day, I'd say that's phenomenal! I hope that statement continues to be true.

God Bless all of you!

Acceleration problem RTV900

dimanche 13 janvier 2019

Ok I know there is some good posts on this problem. I have a 2008 RTV 900 But I have red through most and my problem still exists. Ok first I know these are not meant to spin the wheels off and I know at the end of the day its a tractor based system. But here is what Im dealing with. When I accelerate the machine in M or H it takes a country mile to get up to speed and forget about on grade or if you happen to be in a rut or something the motor will rev and the machine will crawl forward or not at all. Here is what I have done so far. I have adjusted the throttle to transmission cables so that all are at there fullest position when the gas pedal is depressed to the floor. I also adjusted the servo screw several times with no change in improvement. All filters and fluid have been changed in the whole system. I have a very good background in rebuilding hydro pumps for commercial lawn mowers hydro pumps which in the pictures looks to be a very similar setup using a rotor block and piston system. When this similar problem happens on the mowers its almost always the swash plate is worn and or a combination of plate and rotor. Though in the mowers it seems when the fluids warm up the problem will get worse and worse as more the fluid bypasses easier. Im dont seem to get that problem with this RTV. It just seems genuinely very weak throughout all fluid temperature ranges.
2 question here. Is it possible the servo plunger is stuck in a fixed position and not adjusting? If so how hard of a repair is that?
Second is it worth pulling the swash plates out to verify there condition? If so is it a huge undertaking? Or is it something that can be done while the system is still the the RTV?

Priefert Cattle Cage

I am looking at getting the Priefert cattle cage. I understand it is no longer being made but you can still find them. I like the simplicity but more importantly the access to all the animal. One big reason is my brand is on left shoulder and on other chutes the frame is always in the way and makes branding a pain. I just like this little chute. Does anyone out there have one and if so what they think of it.

Class liner 650 twin slip clutch

Came across an option to buy a line 650 twin with a diagnosed problem of slip clutch issues in the back rake.

Info on the web seems to be hit or miss on if this is a common problem or how expensive the fix might be.

Overall condition of the rake is decent, not bent up, arms and tines all good etc.

Is it worth making him an offer or am I asking for trouble even at a steal of a price?

How to rent hay field?

vendredi 11 janvier 2019

Hello All - First post here.  My Mother owns 40 acres that's been in her family forever.  The land is located in southwest Virginia.  She just turned 90, so I have started taking care of more and more things for here.  The land has never had crops on it that I am aware of.  It has always been used for either hay or pasture.  Our current tenant is raising beef cattle and has been on the land for at least 15 years.  There are only about 30 acres that are viable for pasture or hay production, as the rest is wooded.  The current tenant is leaving.  To my knowledge, the tenant has never put down any fertilizer or lime.  I want to give the land a break from cattle for a while.  He kept about 25 head on the land, which I felt was too many for the size of the land.

I want to just grow hay on the land for the next several years.  What would be a fair price to charge someone to harvest the hay on those 30 acres using all their own equipment?  Do you base it on acreage or number of bails harvested, etc.?  I'm just hoping to get enough to offset the biggest part of the property taxes.

For the first 2-3 years, I am guessing that the quality and quality won't be great until we get down some fertilizer and lime in order to get things back in shape.  Would it be fair for me to pay for the fertilizer and lime and the other person to supply the labor and equipment, then probably charge a reduced rate for the hay for those first years?

Thanks

Sitrex QR12 Parts

jeudi 10 janvier 2019

Hello - thank you in advance for the replies.

I am looking at upgrading hay rakes this year.  I farm about 50 acres of alfalfa and alfalfa/grass mix on flood irrigated, laser/gps leveled ground in NV.

A small used equipment place near me has a Sitrex Q12 for sale at a pretty decent price.  The reason it is at a decent price is it looks like the previous owner ripped off the forward most wheel on the right arm.  When I say "right arm"  I mean when you are sitting in the tractor looking forward, the arm on the right side (behind you when sitting on the tractor) of the rake is missing its forward wheel assembly.  It is currently missing the wheel, arm and spring on that forward most wheel on the right side. This can be seen in the attached picture.  The rest of the rake looks straight and in good shape.

I have found a Sitrex QR12 parts catalog located here:

https://www.pricebroseq.com/media/pdf/QR_2010_complete_manual_QR8_QR10_QR12.pdf

In order to fix the rake and get it back in original shape I believe I will need the following:

Wheel (part #210.180 or 210.181).

I will also need a wheel arm (part # 230.723 or 230.724).

I will also need the spring assembly that creates downforce on the rake.  As far as I can tell those are parts 13 - 22 on page 49.  The part numbers are as follows:  13 - 630.375, 14 - 230.729, 15 - 230.658, 16 - 230.661, 17 - 230.663, 18 - 230.662, 19 - 230.709, 20  - 600.441, 21 - 600.018 and 22 - 630.586.

The questions I have are as follows:

1.  Do I need a right handed or left handed wheel?

2.  Do I need a right handed or left handed arm?

3.  How do I go about finding a dealer that carries Sitrex parts?  I have looked on the Sitrex website and obviously the company is Italian.  I don't see a good "dealer locator" function.

4.  What are folks general opinions of these rakes?

Thank you very much in advance.

OhioTC18 could sure use our prayers

Hey guys,
I just talked to Phyllis, Jerry's wife. Jerry has been in the hospital since Dec 10th. He is in ICU. It has been a whirlwind she said. He went in for a hip replacement as the fall he took last May and the recovery from the fall did not work out.

So they replaced the hip. Jerry got pneumonia and had to be put on the ventilator a few times. He is having heart issues and now the latest there is an ulcer eating through his intestines. Sounds horrible. Each time on the ventilator has only been for a short period but he has requested no more ventilator. He and Phyllis could sure use our prayers and good wishes.

Thanks guys!!!!

Disc Mower in a Box

mardi 8 janvier 2019

I have a local CL ad for a 2018 Fort 9'2" disc mower unassembled still in the box for $6,200. The bar is fully assembled. Please give me your honest advise on this. It is a new mower so I assume it would have the obvious advantages. Am I correct that the Fort mower is not as heavily built and of the quality of a Krone or Claas? I cut 50 acres 2-3 times per year. I know my fields and they are pretty clean, no rocks, no terreces, etc... I am looking to make a 10 year asset purchase. If I should be steered away from these mowers please, please do you best to give me the info I need.

Thank you,

David Cochran

4wd not working???

2016 x1100c front wheels are not engaging in 4wd. Had chains on back with blower but couldn’t steer for crap so I moved the chains up front and noticed that the back tires are spinning but the front tires are doing nothing. Jacked all 4 wheels off ground and put in 4wd and the front tires move. Any ideas?

Double beam hay rack frame

I got given two running gears that I'm going to make for hauling round bales. The problem is that the middle pipe and braces are TARFU. My question is I have access to the horizontal pieces of a pallet rack system. Nice and heavy build. Is it possible to replace the middle section with this? Is it built with one tube for a reason? The rack is what I'd like to do. The pallet frame pic is what I'd like to use.

Leg strap for wireless plow remote

lundi 7 janvier 2019

I have a Sno-Way V-plow with the wireless remote and i'm looking to get/make a leg strap so it sits on my right thigh while plowing. I need a third hand while plowing with this thing (my last plow was a Fisher 4-way, so not a lot controlling of the plow required). Does anyone have something similar either that they made or bought? I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel if I can avoid it. Thanks

X1120d Won't Start - Troubleshooting Suggestions?

My X1120D suddenly has decided that it doesn't want to start. Turn the key and nothing happens except a relay click. Here's what I've done to troubleshoot so far.

-Had battery checked at the dealer.
-Replaced (and eventually bypassed) the neutral safety switch.
-swapped the relays around.
-inspected the battery terminals and the ground wire connection.
-checked the slow blow fuses

Not sure what else to do besides pull the starter and have it checked. I'm thinking the key switch is OK since I hear the relay click?

Other suggestions?

An original promotional video of the New Holland D-1000

I have a soft spot for these balers, so when I heard about this video I had to watch it.  I always wondered what on earth New Holland was thinking when they chose the 24x36 (60x90) bale size as far as convenient transport.  Turns out I wasn’t thinking about it right.  Most of the aspects of the D-1000 are very well thought out.  In my opinion, the only thing that New Holland really messed up was the knotter clutch, it is too light.  Also the main chain tensioner was poorly designed.  The needles should have been stiffer also.

No till convertion question.

Is it possible to convert a conventional drill into a no till type? I use a john deere 7000 no till planter and I've seen them in both styles. I'd assume they can be converted to a no till. Can the same be done with a drill? I have a chance to get a IH 5100 for a good price but don't like the idea of tilling... I no till my beans in 30 inch rows but don't like how slow they canopy and split row units as nice as they are are expensive. I'd like to do narrower rows.

First impressions: 1100C

vendredi 4 janvier 2019

I just bought a new RTV-X1100C in early December and with a mild start to our winter here in northern Michigan, I haven't had the opportunity to use it a heck of a lot yet (~13 hours). But I've used it enough to know that it's one heck of a machine and I really, really enjoy it so far.

I bought this to replace a 2017 John Deere X739 garden tractor with the full Curtis cab and the 47" snowblower (as well as mower deck, bagger, cart, etc.)

My primary duty here is snow removal. I live at the end of a 1000' long private road in a very snowy area. (200" last winter, 265" a few years ago.) Before I bought the X739, I had a John Deere Gator 620i XUV which I used to plow the road and I always had fun using it. However, in heavy snow areas like mine, the problem with plowing sooner or later becomes "Where are you going to put all that snow?" Pile it up 4 feet high along the side of the road, throw in a few freeze/thaw cycles, and pretty soon you have immovable walls of ice.

So that's the issue I was trying to address when I sold my Gator and bought the X739 -- but what a mistake! That tractor could throw snow maybe 15' max and it wasn't very good at lawn mowing or leaf bagging either. Somehow, I expected much better performance out of a $25,000 package (no joke, but that does included 6% sales tax).

So when I stopped tearing up my lawn last summer with the Deere and just went back to my Honda walk-behind mower, I started thinking about going back to a UTV and snowplowing the road. I have 32 acres but it's heavily wooded with a bunch of steep hills and my lawn is only about 1/2 acre, so even at the advanced age of 62 it's not going to kill me to mow my lawn with that Honda. The main thing here is to keep the snow off the road.

And you know what? As much as I liked my old Gator, the Kubota is way, way better. I was thinking that I might end up buying the K Connect system so I could put a snowblower on the 1100C, but now I'm thinking I may not need it after all. The Kubota has so much more power and so much more traction than the Gator had that I can push snow piles way off the road, in places I'd never have dreamed of going with the Gator. With the Gator, I was always in danger of getting stuck if I dropped the 2 front wheels off the pavement and the rear wheels were on a slippery roadbed (yes, even in 4WD with the differential locked). Maybe it's the greater weight of the Kubota, maybe it's the HDWS tires versus the JD's ATV tires, but whatever it is, I haven't even come close to getting stuck. We had 12" of heavy, sticky snow earlier this week and I ran it 20' off the road in some spots with no problems at all.

Beyond that, though, I'm amazed at the level of quality and refinement in the Kubota. That factory cab is SOOOOO much better that the JD's Curtis cab -- just about airtight and very quiet. I rarely had to turn down the heater on my Gator, but the Kubota cranks out so much heat that I could comfortably plow snow in a T-shirt.

I'm also a big fan of the Kubota's hydrostatic transmission. The Gator, like most UTVs, had a CVT transmission and it wasn't ideal for work applications. It was peppy and fun to drive, but with the way the primary clutch engaged abruptly, you couldn't "feather it" in to tight places the way you can with the Kubota. No, the 1100C doesn't feel as lively as my old Gator, but I didn't buy it to go trail riding. I bought it to be a work machine and I think it's going to end up being nearly perfect for that.

Only one concern so far: I get a nasty "dry metal" grinding noise in 4WD in reverse at slow speeds. It's not a squeak -- it's definitely more of a grind. It sounds exactly like a snow plow on dry asphalt. I've checked underneath, of course, and there's nothing dragging or anything broken that I can see. The noise goes away when it put it in 2WD, so it must be something with the 4x4 system. I guess I'll have the dealer come out and take a look at it!

Overall, though, this is one heck of a machine. With the very unsatisfactory experience I had with my John Deere tractor and now the Kubota far exceeding my expectations, I'd be hard-pressed to consider anything but a Kubota if I decide I need a tractor around here. That BX series is pretty nice, isn't it?

Man, It's boggy out there

The sun is starting to peek out in the mostly cloudy sky . This has been one of the wettest few weeks I can remember. If not for the RTV, I'd be in bad shape as far as fence fixing goes. Actually, the RTV can hardly make it with the thin nobs on the front tires, but it has so far and now at least 4 days without rain ahead. Yaaay !!
I don't know how many inches it's rained but my gauge has been running over and the canal the gubbberment built across the bil property in the 50's or early 60's keeps claiming more land as the water swirls and eats at the banks. The fences have been claimed by it in several locations as ya'll might remember me posting last summer. Well this time was especially bad when it washed off a tree and took part of my electric fence with it. Of course it was raining when the 50 bulls decided to check the grass on the other side of the property powered by the washed away fence. I quickly tracked down the problem with my fence tester and then the battery on the tester went out.. alas .. my spare battery was dead as a doornail.. but that's what a fiberglass hammer and a t post are for.. along with good ears to hear the strength of the pop as the fence is shorted out by the hammer. :) I looked down the washed out area and found the remaining wire - fortunately it had broken off at the point where the insulated doughnut and jack had been on the tree. I was able to pull it down the area and reattach it to the power source at a gate by the wash and hooked it up.. I had about 2 inches of spare wire.Yet another blessing. :) The picture is a huge tree, although the canal dwarfs it. That's gonna be a problem too..
I am sure looking forward to Spring..
The bulls had gotten out but we got them back up ... now they want out and test the fence daily.

Krone KW 7.82/6X7T (six basket) Tedder

jeudi 3 janvier 2019

Hi:

I have been going round and round to find the best Tedder for my hay making operation. I use a 10 foot cut. So one of the machines I'm really considering is  Krone (six basket). I found a 2015 that looks pretty good.

I always struggle with machinery values. I look on Tractor House but that is mostly Dealer.

So what about privet sellers?

I have a lead and just don't know if it is a good price?

Anybody trade one in at dealer of found one on auction?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Any one have a good machine for sale or know any body?

Kuhn 4000RG, Gehl 2412 or neither?

I need to replace my NH 1431 and am looking at a gehl 2412 or a kuhn 4000RG.  I know almost nothing about either.  I am hoping I can get some insight on these discbines.

I have read the Kuhn has the diamond rollers that are specifically design for a discbine.  Since hay can come in at any angle on a discbine, having the diamonds makes sure the hay is always crimped.  At least that is what the marketing folks say.  I have also heard their may be issues with a gear box but there was a kuhn service recall to fix it, but I do not know if this is true.

I know nothing about the Gehl 2412.

I only have around 40 acres of hay a year (4 crops) so I can not justify buying a newer more expensive brand.

I am hoping someone can give me some insights into what is right, what is wrong with regard to these.  Is there something I should look for?  Should I stay away from one or both of them.  For example, how does the cutter bar and the rollers hold up?  How is dry time compared to other units?  Are there any common gearbox issues?  How about parts availability (Gehl)?   Any suggestions on where to look for excessive were.?

1st Year Irrigated Alfalfa

mercredi 2 janvier 2019

Hey HayTalkers,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with a question I have? My family has a piece of land with irrigation on it and I am wanting to put it into alfalfa hay. So I was wondering if anyone would know how many cuts I would get in the first year. I have it down on paper that I would get 1.5 T on the first cut and 1 T on the second cut. Are these numbers to low or to high? I know there are a lot of variables, but I am currently just trying to get a rough estimate. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys! TIA.

How to tell what model RTV is, worksite, turf...

mardi 1 janvier 2019

I bought this used with a huge dump bed on it. Must have been at a campground or RV park for picking up trash. I think it's a 2008. It has 24x9-12 tires that are almost like a golf cart tread. I'd like to put a mixed atv/street tire on it. I see a lot of options on ebay but they are all 420# rated. I found these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tusk-TriloB...c17:rk:15:pf:0

But they say only fits worksite not turf utility.

Vin is KRTV900A81094166

I think I have a 2008 but I have no idea what sub-model I have.
Any information on what I could put for tires on here is welcome
It does have the hydraulic dump bed.
