Rough Alfalfa Field

I have a 4 year old alfalfa field that has gotten extremely rough to the point that haying it is a nightmare. I read an article somewhere about being able to use a vertical till machine right after getting the hay off to smooth it up. Was wondering if anyone has tried this and your thoughts slim whether it would damage the alfalfa. Thanks.
