Hay contracts?

samedi 31 octobre 2015

Hello everyone,
I have a barn manager who wants me to make hay for her. I have a 60 acre place available to rent but need to improve it To get the type of hay she wants. I want to know what a contract should look like. I'd hate to spend all kinds of $$$ and have her back out next fall and no other market for it at the price I want. Not that I can't find buyers, but its a potential 5,000 bale sale, not a 100 bale sale here, another there. She's looking for 5,000 bales and I figured I can for sure do 3,500. She wants me to store it for her too, that is figured into the price.

Loss of a very close FRIEND

While talking with Border Collie on here about some stuff, she mentioned about the loss of her really REALLY good friend..... Few on here know but Border Collie gets her name on here from that friend. You see her riding with both of those "friends" in a lot of her pictures that she posts.
My heart goes out to Border Collie, Judy, as like her, we both know that all to soon, I hope, we will see that puppy and all of our other good friends and folks when we pass on. I can only imagine the pain that she is going through. Our friend is often the only one that will listen, is always there in the seat next to us, helps us chase those critters and get them back through the broken fence line, puts their paw on our leg to let us know that they are there and care, or has a smile on their face when we need one the most.

Yes, to some that thing is just a dog; a pain to clean up after, a barking nuisance, and that dog down the road that always chases me and gets in the way. For the few of us that know, that friend "loves" us with a love that never dies, is everlasting and pure, and will always be with us...... God bless Judy.......Dennis

slow

I'm new to a Kubota RTV900 diesel, but have a couple questions. Mine seems to "clatter" a lot but have been told that's normal for the 3 cyl. diesel. Also, Low gear works fine but med and high don't much speed up an incline and I'm talking very little incline. Any comments would be great.

Difference in HP requirements for discbines

Still considering trading discbines. In similar sized machines of the same brand, in identical crop conditions, only difference between the two machines being flails vs. rollers, which will typically require more horsepower to run? Or is there minimal difference. My dealer said rollers required more HP, but seems like I'd always heard flails required slightly more, or there wasn't much difference. Just curious.

Land rent

There are 2 -100 acre parcels coming up for bid in my neck of the woods will be five year contracts. Half decent row-crop land not capable of irrigation . On the high end and could do 225+ bushel corn but on the average if you miss a shower or two or it would be closer to 175 bu. Will things get better in the next five years, what should you bid , ,are you hearing any land rents dropping in your area.

We did it! New 2015 RTV-X1100c!!!

jeudi 29 octobre 2015

First, thanks to everyone here who unwittingly helped me make the decision. I have scoured the forum for tidbits and even the dealer said... "you did your homework". I think I asked all the right questions, ordered the right accessories and got a good deal. Bottom line, the dealer knocked off $3000 for me.
Needless to say, the boss approved, and she loved the rig the second she got in the seat.

I will pick it up in about a week. We live in a very remote location and I'm 150 miles from the dealer. I need to take my trailer into town (120 mile round trip) to get new tires and some of the accessories I ordered won't be in for a few days anyway. I ordered a spare wheel and tire, two outside mirrors, sun visors, mud and stick guards.

I'll post a few pictures for future reference. I couldn't find a good 'under hood' pic or one of a cab interior where I knew it was a 2015 version.

What breed to buy starting out

If you where to start out fresh and wanted to run mostly grass fed operation what breed would you buy? I have been looking at the Lowlines, Herfords, Longhorns that should finish on good pasture. I am in South Arkansas I know that makes a difference. We have good pasture that we can rotate them on. We will feed our cows/ heifers just pull what calves we will want to finish on grass. So if you are going to buy 10pairs now what would they be?

Hauling a 1049?

I just won a 1049 in upstate New York (I live in the very bottom of Illinois) and I am wondering the best way to get it. My options are to have it hauled or to use a 2500 dodge and a gooseneck to go get it. I know that pulling it with a 3/4 ton truck will be rough but my main concern is whether or not I can pull the machine up on the trailer. The ramps are pretty steep and I know that those machines are pretty long, my fear is that I will get halfway up and then bottom the thing out and be stuck. Has anyone hauled one of these on a gooseneck and if so did you have any problems?

Thanks

JD 1219 shoes

mercredi 28 octobre 2015

Correct me if I'm wrong but the shoes are not supposed to ride on the ground but instead help keep the cutter bar above the high spots right?

Can someone give me an idea as to how low to set the shoes? Or is this another one of those "your preference" things? I had a couple of spots where my bar dug a little and some of the grass was cut very short. Not scalped but you could easily see the dirt but it came right back after some rain. Just seeing what others have done/are doing.

New Field

I'm in the process of getting the home farm fields back in the next several years from the current renters. One of the fields, I  just found out, had a good dose of Atrazine used. My question is has anybody had good luck putting in a new seeding the following year? If not is there a annual I can put in to make baleage out of or am I better off just letting the current renter put another year of corn on it and take it back next year.

ATV/UTV Sprayers

I know most of you have one around to take care of the small stuff, we use our to do commercial right of way spraying. Having a water hemp problem this year that required a massive dousing of 2-4D I've found the wand that I use and came with a sprayer that we cannibalized for our custom unit to be woefully inadequate. Used a garden hose nozzle with mutable patterns that worked great but took duck tape and zip ties to make it through one session, in other words it was junk. What I'm looking for is a lever action rain shower pattern garden hose nozzle that will hold up to Constance use, am I dreaming?

Round Baler - Down to 1 brand, 2 choices. What would you do???

I've decided to get a different Round Baler.  99% of balers are 5x6 here in central Nebraska, just to let you know.  We bale around 1,500 bales (1,200 #'s/bale).  I sell about 750 ton.  About all we do is hay, I have converted almost all my row crop to hay.  Alfalfa, Oat hay, Teff, Meadow/Prairie Hay.

Reasons for purchase:

  • I've got customers that want the net wrap, as well as my hay mover has stated he has customers wanting net wrap.
  • Speed up the time in the field actually baling.
  • Better ability to handle 1st cutting hay that's gotten rained on, then the windrows turned causing feed problems with my current baler ( I have rotary and V-rake).  I still had trouble baling this year with rained on hay and the windrows were turned with the rotary.
  • Reliability  - my current baler is 20 years old with approx. 25,000 bales in it.  Spent $2,000 in repairs this year.  I will keep it as the price/market for it is around $2,000.  I works fine and we'll continue to use it on grass hay for our own use.

I'm not going to name the brand right now, maybe later.  Doesn't matter to me.  I'm just looking at the numbers and want a fresh set of thoughts.

Baler #1

Brand New 2016 model, twine/net

2 year warranty

$42,500   - firm.

Baler #2

4 year old, same make as new baler, one model older twine/net

no warranty

4,000 bales through it

tin work is excellent,

overall condition very good

will need about $1,000 in update on a chain/sprocket area

$25,000 cash

Dealer is about 60 miles away, but does ship parts to my door.  Very accommodating small family owned dealership.

Lastly, I can write a check for either, but will still be making payments.  I'm willing to buy either.

So let's hear your thoughts/questions.

Thanks for your time.

Winter Annual Weeds

Hello from Nevada.

lundi 26 octobre 2015

I'm a retired miner and mechanic. I live in the high desert of Nevada and have had a BX24 since '07 I think it was. That little machine has been the best piece of equipment I've ever had. It is tough and does anything (literally) that I ask of it.
So, I decided to get an RTV-X 1100C to replace my Polaris Ranger. The Ranger has been great, but momma wanted power steering. That led to a cab with AC and a Diesel. That meant orange.
We go to town to drive the thing and seal the deal on Thursday.
Thanks for letting me join the forum. I hope to be able to contribute to and learn from the place.

Hello from Nevada.

How to get baler onto a flatbed trailer

I have a chance to buy a New Holland 269W baler in great shape for a great price--only hitch, I need to trailer it some 400 miles. The owner says its 98 inches wide (tires) and 16 feet long. I have an option of renting a 16 ft or a 20 ft trailer. Seems like it should work on the 16 ft?

The trailer does not tilt, and its bed is about 2 feet above the ground (forgot to measure--maybe even a tad more). The owner has a tractor and front-end loader, but I'm not sure how we would go about getting this thing on the trailer. Should we use a sturdy ramp to pull it up? If I make a ramp out of a couple sheets of thick plywood, that would be only 8 feet long, thus a pretty steep slope... If I unhook the truck and we put the tractor at the head of the trailer and use chains from the raised bucket and back the tractor up, would this work to pull it up? Or, we could use a hand winch or two from the raised bucket to the baler?

Also, it seems the balance point should be roughly over the baler's axle (a bit forward no doubt). What should I do at the front and read ends of the baler--brace them up on something before cranking down the straps/chains?

Or is it a flat-out crazy idea to try to trailer this thing for 400 miles?

Any advice would be most helpful.

Dave W.

Dehydrated Alfalfa

dimanche 25 octobre 2015

I am attending an international alfalfa convention where the European Union delegation highlighted the benefit of their dehydrated alfalfa hay, and a few Spanish dehydration equipment manufacturers also setup a booth explaining how to integrate their machines into the harvesting process.

Are dehydrated alfalfa popular in the U.S.?  Prior to my trip I had no idea about its dominant role in European alfalfa export.  The folks I talked to said it is easier to achieve consistent quality for export, and to reduce potential bloating.

The U.S. folks did a pretty good presentation as well.  I met a director from National Alfalfa & Forage Alliance (http://alfalfa.org/) who laid out some good cases for U.S. alfalfa production.

Advice on inspecting IH 445 baler before buying?

I have a chance to buy an International 445 baler for $1300.

It supposedly works well, but I don't think I'm going to get a chance to see it run before buying it.

Is it dumb to buy a baler without seeing it in operation?

Any advice on particulars I should look for when looking it over?

Thanks much for advice to a novice (have never run a baler before).

Hello, first question from new member. After 4 years of borrowing the neighbour's baler, we are going to buy a machine as we go from 150 to 450 bales a year.  We have a small 50hp tractor and are cutting oaten hay with a UFO drum Mower and have the MF20 Side delivery rake.  The price and conditions look all much the same the NH69 and 317 have hydraulic tensioning.  What would be the experienced buyer's choice? Thanks

older equipment

I am trying to start my farming career and have been given the opportunity to lease 20 acres and purchase some equipment. The equipment is older but the owner says that it runs pretty well. My question is, will it be better to use the older equipment or to purchase some that is a little newer because I plan on expanding in the near future? This equipment for small 2 string bales.

older equipment

Brought home a new toy! (That needs a little work)

Went to a local auction this morning for a small dairy farm that was going out of business.  Had a mix of older equipment that was worn out and some newer stuff that was in nice shape.  I was mainly interested in the CaseIH 8312 mower that was there, but also kept an eye on the JD 4230 as well.  The mower was in decent shape, but there was some sheet metal that needed to be patched and the safety skirt was pretty ripped up.  I ended up going for a little more than I was willing to spend given it's condition.  The 4230 appeared to be in nice shape with only a few dings here and there, no serious leaks and one rear tire that's a little worn on the sidewall.  Managed to pick it up for $7k.

Only possible serious problem I've found so far came when I started driving it home. The hi/low shift to go between 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th doesnt' work.  The tractor makes no reaction at all when you move the shift lever, so I'm hoping it's just a disconnected link or something like that.  Drives fine other than that.

To top things off, one of the other guys there noticed my interest in the mower and let me know that he has the same mower (he says it's in nicer shape) that he'll sell me for what my last bid was.  His mower is a drawbar hitch style but he said he does have a 2pt swivel hitch off of an 8315 that he thinks will fit it.  I checked the CNH parts website and it looks like both hitches take the same bushings.  Does anyone know for sure if you can swap the hitches out?  I could live with the drawbar hookup, but the swivel would be nice.

Bobcat t300

This summer Was the first year I have run the Kuhn 18 bale accumulator. I bough the tie grabber also. Long story short the machine I had originally thought I was going to buy was on tires and is just not suitable for the tie grabber. Which was a cat 262c with extra weights. Tires leave to many marks in the fields and it also had a slew of software problems which led me to give it up. So I ended up with Good deal on a bobcat t300. Good tracks and runs well. Been using for about a 2 months using the regular grabber and not the tie grabber. I absolutely love this thing. Way better in the fields and smoother ride and tons of lift power.
Long story short I need to add a second hydraulic function to run the tie grabber and I'm wondering the best way to do this. I could add a splitter on the tie grabber but I would rather add the function to the machine.
Does anyone have any experience with this or have any good ideas?
Thanks, Seth

H7230 Roll Bearing

Finished up mowing for the season today, and noticed while cleaning the machine that I'm getting a scraping sound every 45 degrees of so of rotation from the upper roll bearing - the one near the gearbox.  Machine is three years old and has around 500 acres on it, so I imagine it is a quality Chinese bearing.  I replaced those bearings once on my old 411, but things look a lot tighter on the H7230.  I need to get a shop manual, but is it possible to remove that bearing and swing arm without pulling the gearbox?

Deciding on a roof.

New to the site. I just purchased a new RTVX-1120D in camo and I'm having a hard time getting a straight answer on the correct roof for it. I purchased it out of state and didn’t think to get the roof included at the time of purchase. My issue is i want to put doors on it and add heat eventually, but I'm being told by my local dealer that the poly/plastic roof works with all
door kits. The dealer that i purchased it from said the poly roof won't work with laminated glass windshield with the wiper and will leak around the doors because of the short overhang. Does anyone have the scoop on which i the tried correct method? I want the laminated windshield and wiper, but not tomorrow. I do want the the roof asap and definitely want to add the metal doors in the future. Does the overhead console fit in the poly or metal roof, which roof is better to add an LED light bar to.

Thanks

MF 1250 intermitant forward travel

I have an MF 1250 with 775 hours on it. I use it mostly for brush hogging weeds and small saplings. The tractor is 14 years old.

Today as I mowed the tractor just stopped twice and would not go forward. It would go backward but not forward. Both times occurred as the tractor engine was nearing the top of the normal temperature range. Weed seed badly clogs the radiator screen and I have to stop fairly often to clean the screen and front grill. This has been the mode of operation for many years.

After sitting for 15 minutes, when the shuttle shift was put in the forward position, the tractor tried to move but couldn't. After sitting another 15 minutes the tractor behaved normally and I finished mowing the field.

I moved to a second field and as the weed seed clogged the radiator the temp increased and about the time I would have stopped to clean the radiator screen the tractor stopped again. After sitting for a few minutes it shifted and moved normally once more.

Any idea what is going on? The hydraulic fluid is clean and full. The hydraulic filter has less than the recommended hours to change. BTW, does anyone have a cross reference for that hydraulic filter which costs $80 at my dealer?

Any help is appreciated.

Vermeer baler 5400,made in USA ??

well a few years ago I was looking for a round baler. found the vermeer 5400. Looked good for what I have to do.

Now less than 3000 bales through it. Already replaced the belts. This week a well lubed chain broke, Stamped CHINA right on the chain. Made in USA and even IOWA ? . don't think so.

I noticed a color change in the paint near a roller. Yeah bearing was hotter than heck. .

So less than 3000 bales and less than 3 years old.  already new belts , chain and now bearing is heating up.

Beware of New Holland and West Hills tractor in TN

mercredi 21 octobre 2015

I wanted to share my experience with Westhills tractor in Jonesbourgh TN. In the spring of 2015 I traded a 2011 New Holland h7220 discbine in at Westhills tractor for a brand new 2015 H7230. My reason for trading was because my h7220 discbine had a standard hitch and I was hitting the side of the hitch with my tractor tire when I made sharp turns. I decided to buy the h7230 because it had a swivel hitch and it would allow me to make tight turns, and not bind and hit my tractor tire. So after trading and having a total of $24900 in the new mower I immediately notice that the mower was not crimping my alfalfa evenly and I also noticed that it was not cutting my crop as well as my old mower was. This was on my second cutting as I had used my old discbine on my first cutting. I contacted west hills and the nightmare began we will get out there and look at it just let me know when you cut again. 3rd cutting came I called no one showed up. Called again on my fourth cutting no one showed up. Finally after my fourth cutting they did. They realized the roller had a flaw in it and had to replace the roller. I had to cut my 5th cutting with my neighbors disc mower because they had my mower for 2 months. I also knew it was hopeless that it would cut it cleanly. My neighbors disc mower cut it beautifully, but it didn't have the crimping action which I need to help dry my crop down. After two months of calling and calling I finally got it back. I Went to cut my final and beautiful 6th cutting and it cut it horribly. The mechanic they sent out said it looked like I had tired to cut my hay with the mower off and just dragging it across the field. It is a $24,900 field drag. So he gets to working on it. We lowered my drawbar on the tractor from 18" to 15" and it helped but still cutting bad no where near what it was advertised to do. I lowered the tire pressure from 36lbs to 10lbs as a final attempt to get the cutter at closer to the ground. It helped alittle more, but still not cutting acceptable. The mechanic says there's nothing else that can be done and I agree he his right. The owner of the company Tim Foster tells that even though it is under warranty tells me it is now a used mower and we will not take the mower back and give you a new mower and we will not refund your money. New Holland says that they will not have anything to do with them taking it back that they have nothing to do with the selling part just the dealer. No I am force to take West Hills to court and waste my time in court and lawyers fees in order to get what is fair. The fact is I spent $24,900 on a brand new piece of equipment that has never worked right from the beginning and I am going to now spend more on lawyers fees. I ask you to please consider this before doing any business with West Hills Tractor in jonesbourgh TN . If there is anything I can do to keep you from going through a nightmare like I have please feel free to PM me.

Beautiful laid-back evening

It was a heck of a nice evening here. It got down to 26 the other morning…today had a high to @83. Was gonna cut firewood, but the bugs were too bad to suit me. I poured a little snake-bite-medicine, let the sheep out into the hayfield (getting crappy, going to redo soon) to eat their fill as the pasture is going fast due to lack of rain. I snapped the picture because the leaves are turning and are beautiful. The pic is too dark to do the colors justice.

sheep out.jpg
There is not fence around the part in which they are grazing but that is no problem as my sheep are remote controlled. Notice the voice activated Border Collie that puts them in. The black and white one is just 5 months old and gets in the way more than he helps, but mom (the mostly white one) hasn’t had time to teach him his left from right yet.

...well crap, it won't let me (I'm blaming "it" just because I don't know how to load a clip) load the video of the dog bringing the sheep in using only my commands

Bale Processor for rebaling

I am looking at a highline 7800 processor for rebaling some rounds into small squares. All of my hay is long stem hay no alfalfa just grass hay. I have watched one run and looks like it would work like a charm. Even had a guy say he took off half of the flails to keep it from chopping to small. What do you think? I need to figure out some way to get this done ASAP. looked at a BP500 but they sold it yesterday.

first calf

Me and Pat bought a wizz-bang young angus bull last year. The first cow that he bred had a calf yesterday, a nice size black bull calf, mom was a brown cross. Patrick wondered if the bull questioned his function at the ranch as he didn't look very busy. Glad to see this one --looking for more!

Bale sled gate latch

Can somebody point me towards a good picture of a bale sled gate latch? I'm talking about the sled that's pulled behind the baler that bales drop into and when full the driver pulls a rope and the gate opens and leaves the bales behind in a pile. I'm thinking of building one. I would much rather have an accumulator and grapple but for no more then I'm cutting (15 to 20 acres) this is about the only thing that makes sense money wise. It would cut down on the trips on and off the tractor.

How long do you let your round bales stay outside to "sweat" before stacking them in a shed. What if the bales get rained on during that time?

Sale barn loafers

After I got done hauling my stuff on Monday, I decided to swing by the sale barn with my son and wife. I hadn't been in awhile and it's nice to see faces and what is being brought through the ring. Prices were all over a bit but I caught the tail end of the sale.

Something else caught my eye. I thought they were just city boys just checking to see what this was about. Nope, they were buyers. Guy in 20s had on girlie jeans, polo, some tight fitting exercise jacket and loafers. He looked like a frat boy. Another guy looked like suburban dad in khakis and tennis shoes attending his daughter's dance recital. This was a far cry from the old men in gimme hats, starched BLUE jeans, and so forth.

I guess either the buyer demographic is really starting to change or cattlemen are being metrosexualized. A buyer is a buyer and the more the better. Is it going to just be me in my sharp collared shirt and Wranglers tucked in to my colorful knee high boots in 20 years?

Rails are done, yet still working on something for the back behind the cab to prevent debris falling on the motor. One of the reasons I did this was also to get rid of the rattle from the tail gate. Diesel's are loud enough but that rattle had to go. I bought this used 2006.

1100 Dual headlight housing blank hole, Wire and Load?

So I have a 2010 RTV 1100 and I want to introduce headlight bulbs to the empty and outside holes of the OEM headlight housings. As you know, the RTV comes with 2 headlight housings, a driver's side and a passenger side. Each housing has a place for 2 bulbs, one next to the other, however, the headlight housing comes from the factory with a only 1 bulb installed in each housing, the inside most part and it contains Philips light bulb # 894's. The outside bulb hole of each housing is closed off from entrance of a bulb but I am wondering 1) if that flat piece of plastic is possibly a knockout blank and 2) do I add an OEM wire connector to the existing white plug 3) and do I use 894 bulbs or will that overload the circuit? I have not found a kit available which would have made this easy so now I actually have to think, bummer.

Hay Guard- First year review - Welcome advice/reviews

dimanche 18 octobre 2015

Good evening Gents,

Bought a 575 New Holland at the beginning of this year to replace my Massey 124. (which is for sale btw lol)  First time I had a spray system on a baler. Heard a lot of good things about propionic but got convinced to try out Hay Guard. Plus prop has that awful smell. So I ran Hay Guard throughout this season. Seemed to accomplish its goal. Baled some at 25-30% and didn't mold. Doesn't have that 'just baled' smell when you break it open a few months later as I have heard some reviews on prop has. Which, not a big deal. My concern right now: I just baled the last for the year and started cleaning up the baler to put her up for the winter. Air blow-Powerwash-Grease-Coat in diesel fuel etc... I pulled off the nozzle(s) housing and noticed a decent amount of (salt) buildup from the spray. Now Propionic makes surface rust, but salt eats equipment alive. I was told this is a "non-corrosive" product. But I am coming into the mindset that I was fed a bunch of malarkey.. The spray can work great but if it corrodes my equipment, well we all know we cant be having that. Any similar experiences. Sidenote: Still in first decade of taking over grandpas farm. Call me green if you will. Mainly bale alfalfa and grass hay for horse market, feed a few cattle to get rid of the lower quality stuff.

Don't know what to do!!!

I have 25 acres of alfalfa that hasn't budded yet, but it is about to. It's probably 14"-16" tall if I don't cut it will I have a lot of last years old crop in my first cutting next spring? It has already frosted twice in the past two nights.

Don't know what to do!!!

Whats the future look like for New Holland/CNH?

New Holland was founded 20 minutes from me. The engineering and hay tools plant is still in operation there. This is/was NH hay equipment territory through and through. New Holland skidsteers were on virtually every farm. It seams since Fiat took over the deal things have really been going south. Their 200 series skidsteers that came out in 2011 were a disaster. That left many farmers in the area going to another brand. I have an engineer friend in the combine group. He said it feels like Fiat is just trying to blead it dry.

In the past I would have only considered NH hay equipment but I am really having second thoughts about that attitude. Maybe all the other players stepped up their game and are giving NH a run for their money because it just doesnt seam like NH has a hands down better product like it used to be...

Then there is the spare parts, which got me thinking about this today...I bought a brand new knotter back in 2004 for $470 dollars. A year later we junked the baler and I kept the knotter. Neighbor just broke a knotter frame. I told him I have a complete knotter with less than 2K bales through it. I didnt know how much to ask for the knotter so I looked up a new price. $850 for a new knotter! Now I understand inflation but I also know that there have been a lot on advances in CNC manufacturing that have driven down costs. Inflation is one thing, but double the price in 10 years? Good grief...

Whats the future look like for New Holland/CNH?

Too late for more hay?

I'd like to get in a 3rd cut. The grass+clover is border-line ready (if it was summer I'd wait a few weeks) and I could sure use the feed.  However, I've heard that if the grass is mowed and doesn't have time to grow back some, it could be damaged by the cold (northern Vermont). Is this the case? Would it help to spread manure & used bedding as a mulch afterwards?

Thanks

Alfalfa - Round Bales

I appreciate everyone's replies on my spring planting of alfalfa.

When we clear cut our old pasture, not only did we make flat ground available for potential hay fields, but some hilly areas too. When I say hilly, safe for a tractor to be on, but probably to steep to pull or load a wagon with squares - in that I could see the stack falling off one side or worse yet, pushing the tractor/baler/wagon down the hill.

We don't want to let these hilly pastures return to woods or just wilderness/brush, at minimum, they will be bush hogged.

What I'd like to consider is making round bales on these areas.

Set me straight if I'm wrong, but I gather the highest dollar hay is alfalfa. Around here, grass hay round bales are not profitable. But what about round bales of alfalfa?

I've got enough tractor for 4x4 round bales. Do you feel there's a demand for 4x4 round bales of alfalfa?

Thanks!
Bill

Permanent winter home for the cows

Well it started out slow, but finally got a 24'x48' up for the cows.  They will have access to 12x48 of it for the winter, while the rest is to keep atleast a few items out of the snow for the winter.  Waiting on my board n batten to get cut and then that will be going on from 32" up and steel along the bottom 32".  Still have to run a couple more angle braces and finish up through bolts, but the labor intensive stuff is finally finished.  Based off a couple combined university plans, and put up by myself and my 5 month pregnant significant other along with the help of my mother and father for the heavy lifting on a couple days.

The 2015 hay season is winding down, what will you do different for 2016?

Wife and son put in about 12 acres of Ryegrass for early cutting for this past Spring, not again, not enough tonnage and difficult dry down in the early season. Also no more BMR for dry hay, too expensive for the tonnage it made and like FarmerCline said it's too hard to dry down here in NC, even with the stalks completely crushed with roller conditioners. If you were wrapped it as Haylage it might do fine.

The plan right now is 40 acres of Winter Oats for hay and combining some of it for ground feed. Eight acres of Cereal Rye for early cutting next Spring, neighbor done really well with his Rye this Spring. Come in behind the Rye with 8 acres RU ready corn for ground feed. I went with her pick up the Oat seed Friday, $6/bushel for cleaned non-certified Oats. Been buying from the same place for years now and they've always done well. Certified Oats are about $11.50/bushel.

Will most likely get certified Soybeans and Brown Top Millet for 40 acres next Summer for hay. The soybeans bought last year didn't germinate well partially because of so many split beans and partly because of the drought.

Hot Beans

Fella that has a farm in Southern Illinois that I will be hunting on this fall was picking beans yesterday....wind coming straight out of the North was blowing hard as he was picking South when evidently chaff ignited around the blower. He said it was real dusty with a strong wind yesterday when he smelled smoke and swung out of the beans. He said he saw it was on fire and left the blower going in hopes of pushing it out. Not to be. He had almost 200 gallons of fuel onboard and it ignited. Nearby fella came running with 2 shovels and unbelieveably they were able to hold the fire back in the field until the fire department got there....it was a miracle it did not get into the beans. He said two hours later the local Deere dealer that they do business with had a late model combine with a 40' draper parked beside the burnout. Just the rear of the combine burned....the head and front tires were not damaged. Combine was about a '08.

Rearview Mirror

Decided I needed to see where I've been. So stopped at O"Reilly's and picked up a $9 convex round 5" mirror with swivel and mounting stud. Dug around in the iron pile and found a small angle bracket with hole. Cut it to length and welded it to the third from the left U-clamp that holds the top on. Works pretty slick. And if I need to fix my hair I have a mirror to look in..... :)

MF 1035 Parts needed

Hello,

I have a 1987 MF 1035 tractor and I'm looking for a few parts.

I'm looking for a Hourmeter/Tach Gauge and the cable that goes with it. Also the Instrument Panel. My MF dealer says he isn't having any luck finding these parts so I thought I'd ask here.

I'd appreciate any help. NOTE: The parts can be used as long as long as they function properly and in good condition

Thanks.

Brand New Brillion Seeder

Rented a brand spanking new Brillion SS8 from NRCS office and planted 19 acres with it.  I was the first one to use it.  Worked like a champ!  Metering was absolutely spot on.   Jane at the office was like a mother watching her child go off to school for the first time.  Said she was glad that I was the first one to use it because I always return equipment better in better condition that I picked it up.

Got done and started cleaning out the seed box.  Found a 3x1/2 bolt wedged in the agitator!  I know it wasn't there when I started.  So it must have come from the seed or been hidden under the agitator.

Makes me sick to my heart!  I hate tearing up equipment!

Spring Planting Alfalfa Questions

jeudi 15 octobre 2015

I've got a small - probably 2 acre slice of ground next to one of my hayfields that we just finished clearing from wilderness - back to a potential hay field. I'll probably use this strip for some test/lessons learned planting before committing whatever I plant there to larger acrage.

I think I'd like to plant it in alfalfa. It would give us a whole new variety of hay to learn first hand.

Question is - can you plant alfalfa in the spring and expect much in the way of a first year's crop?

The field will get fertilizer and lime over the winter per our soil sample in prep for spring. Since the plot is so small, we'll disk up everything, hit whatever weeds come out of it afterwards with round up. Next we'll broadcast the seed and cultipack down.

Any recommendations on alfalfa seed type/preference? Should I consider RR ready alfalfa or is it to new for prime time?

We would make square bales of it when cut. Curious also of some average tons per acre yield estimates too.

Any sage advice, tips or tricks are much appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill
