Dryland alfalfa

dimanche 9 juillet 2017

Looking for info from anybody who is growing dryland alfalfa out west or in the western Midwest. We are still looking at properties in central and western Kansas, and not much alfalfa is grown out there, at least compared to wheat and corn. I see it being grown while we drive around, but not a lot of info on yields, etc. The area we are looking at gets around 22-26" of rain per year, and I know alfalfa is grown dryland in places hotter and dryer than central Kansas, just wondering why some folks in Kansas think it is so off the wall. Maybe they are just so used to huge acres of wheat that hay on a smaller scale seems odd to them, lol. Seems to me that anywhere that gets enough moisture for corn, should do fine for alfalfa.
