Backgrounding Shed

dimanche 31 décembre 2017

Hello all,
I am considering building a shed for backgrounding calves and wanted to get opinions from experts.
My plan was to build a 30x50 shed possibly with a concrete floor to keep some calves in.
I figured I could buy some 3-400lb calves at the auction put 2-300lbs on them and send them back to the sale. I know it's probably not the most profitable system but I could get rid of some hay that isn't horse quality. I was planning on giving them free choice hay and feeding ground ear corn/soybeans mix around 14% protein.

My main question was how many calves would a 30x50 barn support? They'll have access to an acre lot around the barn and I'd like to have several calves but I also don't want a muddy nasty mess because I have too many.

I hope you'll all weigh in on this and any tips would be appreciated. I've had more experience in row croos than livestock even though I've been around cows my whole life.

Disc or aerator/renovator

Hogs have done a number on my hayfield this winter. In the past I have taken a box blade and front end loader repaired the damaged but this year out of 90 acres 75 to 80% is rooted up. What can i do to get this field in shape to be baled this summer? Would discing it up with a tandem disc too drastic? A guy that I work with, is telling me to run a aerator/ renovator over it. What have you guys had the best result with? Trapped/shot 50+. dec 15.

JIGGS

Hi all! New member here and looking for advice.

I currently grow Tift 85 for horses and cattle. I have heard good things about the Jiggs grass and I have a sprig supplier found. I need any and all relevant bits of advice about this grass before I pull the trigger and plant some. I have sandy loam dryland in southwest Georgia, USA. Thank you!

Vitamins

Just curious what others do for vitamins to the herd for the winter. Normally we feed TM salt mixed with rumensin and vitamins AD+E with the silage or grain. This year the price of that blend went from $1,000 to $1,725 a Tonne and the mill is blaming it on the vitamins. Apparently a BASF plant in Germany that does the initial step in vitamin production burnt up and is offline till end of March. We found two months supply of straight AD+E at 4 different Coop stores and cleaned them out yesterday since the price still seemed reasonable. I know some guys who only give blue salt blocks year round and don't have issues (my FIL's cows don't get anything else besides ivomec after they start scratching). Not going that route but I'm wondering if others are having issues with supply or are changing their practices this year.

The nutritionist said it's "only $1.20 a month more per cow than last year". That's like $5k for the rest of the winter which I could find much better ways to blow than this.

BTW the nutritionist doesn't have cows and that probably affects his view on this.

New, nh br7060 ss crop cutter vs jd 582 ss

samedi 30 décembre 2017

Buying my first round baler in the spring. These are two local balers for sale. The JD 582 looks in good shape. Didn't get to look it over real well yet. The dealer wasn't sure of bale count without hooking up the monitor and they want $16,000. The nh 7060 was in perfect shape everything looked good. Mega wide pickup and crop cutter. A little over 5000 bales and they want $21,900. I have no experience with round balers and wanted to get opinions on my better choice. It's getting tougher to find someone to bale for me and with a year like this one, everyone was having at the same time.

Help me with feed choice questions

I use CPC Commodities for bulk feed, I am about to order another tote sack of bulk feed and would like some advice from those who know more than me...

Feeding a 2yr old heifer & 2- 6mo old calf's, also feeding the same feed to 3 horses..

All are on a lot, cows are separate from the horses, all have free choice hay.

The last sack of feed was 13% grower, everyone loved it, I hand feed every evening.

I think I want to up the protein level, thinking it's winter and they could put the extra fat content to use with body heat ??

If ya have time, look over this link below and advise me what I should feed this time please.

I'm leaning towards their "CPC 16% Supreme"

Hesston 1160

I just bought a Hesston 1160 for $450.  I don't see a single issue with it.  I'm scared there has to be a huge hole in it somewhere lol.  Anybody have any experiences with this unit.  Good/Bad/Ugly.  Things to look out for.  How it performed? etc.  thanks

My winch won't fit.

NOTE: I posted this in two different forums here on purpose. Reply to whichever one you see first. I'll find it. Thx

I bought a warn winch for my RTV 1140. I was having full service done by the dealer and asked them to install the winch. They said ok. But then call and said it won't fit. Said it would work on an RTV 1140x or any RTV 900x or 1120x etc., but not on my 09 1140. Crap.

I asked if they'd trade me for one that would fit, nope. So, I got a winch without a home. Since I have industrial tires on my tractor, I have been in some spots where a winch could help. Even with my FEL I could not get out of or get past some spots on my property.

My question, are winches okay to put on tractors? Do they make mounts for them or what???

Alfalfa Seed Recommendations

Newbie here,

I'm going to be seeding 300 acres of new crop alfalfa next fall.  The land is currently a very old stand of alfalfa and I believe brome grass.  Probably only 10-15 percent alfalfa left in the stand.  I'm going to take this years crop off and then burn it all down with roundup and once it's safe till it up and seed new alfalfa.  I've never raised alfalfa in ND before.  Only southern MN.  I'm totally unfamiliar with the seed available now.  This soil is a pretty hard soil.  I would classify it as silty loam.  There are some areas of gravel under the top soil however.  I have read a couple studies from the Univ. of ND research dept.  The studies showed that 8lbs per acre yielded their best results vs. all other seed rates up to 28 lbs I believe and as low as 5 lbs.  So 8lb seems to be the magic number.  What I'm concerned with is the actual seed.  Hay growers here on unirrigated land generally take one cutting.  But they let the alfalfa go way past the full bloom stage.  Don't bale tell into august.  I think two cuttings is certainly possible taking the alfalfa at bud or up to 10% bloom.  So any thoughts on that would be great.  My biggest concern is what would be the best seed to go with in a colder growing region that gets a modest amount of rainfall and in that type of soil.

Skid steer bucket Help

We just did some work on our skid steer one of which was replacing the front tilt/dump cylinders due to the old ones leaking very badly. The new cylinders we bought have the same bore size and stroke. The issue i have now is the bucket will not completely dump. this is especially true when the load is at any decent height. Any ideas were to look for an issue. The hoses are not rubbing any where and the cylinders never come close to contacting the frame.

Massey 7475 Starting Issues

Hi everyone, I have a 2008 MF 7475 (Perkins engine) and one of the plastic fuel line clips wore out and due to delivery times it was replaced with a rubber fuel line.

However now it doesn't want to start, turns over but doesn't want to start, cannot get any error codes on the Dot display but there is a CI.70 or C1.70 displays on the other screen which I have not noticed before.

Any help appreciated, thank you

Barn Lighting

As I mentioned in a earlier post, my son has built a new barn and he is basically finished with just a few things yet to do.

The main part of the barn is 40'x60', and this is where I am directing my inquiry. I visualize it being lighted with 2 rows of four light fixtures each spaced 12' a part to give it good light. The lighting will be about 12' above the floor.

What types of light fixtures and wattage/lumens has been used by all of you who have recently built barns in the last 5 years or so?

Front spring setting w/plow

For those of you that are running a v plow, what setting do you have your front springs at? Currently mine are in the middle but thinking about turning them up to get a little more height on the main plow frame. I have a few more inches to go before I max out the height on the rtv mounted bracket but trying to find a happy medium between the 2 adjustments.

Kubota commercial plow review

We’ve had a few snowstorms, so I can finally give a review.
I have a good sized driveway, live on a half mile private road, and plow about 300 yards of paths for the dog on the lawn every winter. The road is plowed by a contractor, but I usually push banks back and clean up out near the main road. My previous RTV500 had the Kubota electric plow with manual angle.
My initial reaction was Wow! It takes a bit to get used to the buttons, but the action is very fast compared to the old plow. It raises much higher, which is great for pushing banks back. It’s very fast and being able to change the angle is a game changer. I push at an angle until I’m near the banks, then straighten it out to push them back and stack snow. This thing will push as much snow as our contractors F250 and is way more maneuverable. I clean up out near the main road, pushing backs back and getting snow away from our mailboxes. The truck just can’t get the angles I can. Stuff I’d have to run at with the 500, I just ease into it and go. Way less shoveling as I can now back drag away from the garage doors.
I was very happy with my 500, but the 1120 and the Kubota commercial plow are a in a whole different league. Happy new year!

New Holland 505 Baler

jeudi 28 décembre 2017

Need some help with the New Holland 505 Baler. The pickup rake is no longer turning. Problem seems to be related to the clutch on the pickup feeder drive.  Does not seem to turn allowing the chain to turn the pickup assembly. Not sure if I have all of the official name of the parts correct.

Spreader comparison

I sold my Meyer V MAXX 3954 mushroom soil spreader with the desire to get into a bigger spreader hopper that will need less refilling stops and be more reliable. The 3954 was a good spreader and at $6,000 although it needed a few minor fixes, overall served me well for the investment.
Now I'm onto bigger and better (and far more expensive) At first, I wanted a Meyer 8865. There's a lot of decent used ones out there in my price range, some equipped with brakes. However, the flotation tires are set so wide at 140", I can't get across a bridge into one of my primary fields, and honestly, the roads I travel looked to be challenging at that width, too. However, I need flotation tires big time. Regular truck tires are not suitable. Also, I am getting increased interest in spreading for a few other small/medium time operators (SMTO's? LOL), so it could be a source of some extra income along with my needs.
There are a few local choices, but after looking for 2 months, there's not very much local inventory and "spreading season" (JAN/FEB) is fast approaching.
Then I started looking at Meyer Industrial 8720's. Smaller than the 8865, but still bigger than my 9524. Max width is 118" which BARELY gets me across the bridges and seems a bit more manageable on back roads. It's a V hopper design with 3 augers unloading to 2 vertical beaters in the back. It's just a bigger version of what I had. I know what I'm getting for a spread pattern, which is not exactly the best. It'll spread maybe 18-20' wide and leave some clumps.
I found this one at Swiderski in WI. I feel like it's priced fairly and in good-very good condition. Trucking to me is salty. I'm probably looking at $3,000-$3,500. http://ift.tt/2pKB9WY

Another one I found is a Kuhn Knight PSC161 at a dealer much closer to me, but not local. Dealer initially offering to deliver for free (bout 150 miles). It is a stronger, bigger spreader, but works on a different principal. It has a flat bottom box. The hopper is shaped like a 20 yard dumpster with a flat bottom. On the bottom, it has a chain/sprocket driven live floor unloading into rotary hammers and rear discharging via 2 large flat spinners. Kuhn claims a wider, thinner but more even spread pattern. It has a 108" max overall width so it's a bit narrower. The floor is hydraulically driven. My tractor has variable adjustable outlets to control the speed/output of the live floor. The spinners are PTO driven. Requires 180/160HP and I have 230/190, so I'm OK there. Does NOT have brakes, but my tractor has 4 wheels air brakes. Here is a link to the Kuhn Knight I'm considering. http://ift.tt/2E6UzIY

Videos/evidence seem to indicate a more "particulated" spread (less crop smothering clumps) from the Kuhn Knight. I could live with the Meyer spread pattern, although I did feel like a chain drag is kind of needed once the field was done sometimes, but I don't want to go over the field again. It's also worth noting I had trouble with the vertical curved guides being close enough to the vertical spinners on the old Meyer spreader I had, and this can create spread pattern and clump issues. So it's likely I will see an improvement on the 8720. I was told the Meyer working optimally will spread 30'.

The Meyer will probably be $28K delivered. The Kuhn will probably be 32K delivered. The Meyer is 44K new. The Kuhn is probably 65K new, but that's a somewhat edumacated guess. The Meyer is a 2015. The Kuhn is probably a bit older, maybe 5 years old. Still gathering info as I go.

Questions
1. Which will have better spread pattern? My guess the Kuhn.
2. Which will last longer given equal levels of care?
3. Is one with a chain/slat floor delivery system likely to last longer than a 3 auger delivery system? Is it likely to require less replacement of bearings, chains, etc?
4. $5K difference between the 2 leaves a lot of money in my pocket, but the Kuhn is a "bigger/badder" spreader and is 20K more new. It might be a bit too much spreader, but my business model seems to be gaining more acres and going bigger to a manageable point.

Sorry for the long winded description, was trying to be thorough. Leaning to the Meyer, but the Kuhn name/reputation is very good. I think the Kuhn may get a better paint job. The Meyer paint jobs are pretty bad. Equipment image is important to me since each of my farms is a "customer".

What are your thoughts?

Mowing and raking headlands

lundi 25 décembre 2017

I'm not happy with the way I mow and rake headlands.  When I mow with a 9' haybine, I make four passes around the outside of the field. After mowing the outsides I split the field in half, and then drive along the headlands back to the edge of the field.  I don't like going in a big spiral around and around the field The problem is the headlands get really smashed down when I turn around at the end of a row, and then again when I ted, and then again when I rake.  I rake the outside of the field first.  After the field is baled there's a lot of grass left in the headlands that just never got picked up.  I haven't tried raking the outsides last. My rake has hydraulic lift and I raise it when I'm turning around in the headlands.

Is there a better way I should be doing this?  I try not to drive on the same area twice.

Deere 7200 Power Quad

samedi 23 décembre 2017

How does a Deere Power Quad transmission work? This is on a 7200 series tractor.

Do you have to clutch to shift? Is it a good transmission for cutting and baling hay? This is not a Power Quad Plus.

Opinions appreciated.

Deere 7200 Power Quad

I agree

http://ift.tt/2pn9POj

I'd like to see the same principle applied to hay equipment.  I'd love a "medium" sized big square baler capable of producing 2x2, 500-700 lbs bales.  3x3 and bigger balers are too much for my environment and my customer base.  And small squares are too inefficient, even with accumulators, bale wagons, etc.

Just ordered a 72” Berco snowblower for my RTV. It’s the self powered version (24 HP Honda engine) since my old girl doesn’t have a PTO.

Should have it in a week or so. Will give an update after a few uses.

Do X1120D Doors fit on a X900?

jeudi 21 décembre 2017

Hi all,

I have a number of Kubota products, and I recently upgraded from a Kawasaki Mule 610 to a new X-900. I wondered if anyone knows (or has installed) if the half doors on the X-1120D will also fit on the X-900?

I don't want to deal with full size doors when working on my property, but thought half doors would add some safety when the grandkids are riding around the property and woods.

I know there are a number of options to add soft and hard full doors to the X-900, but don't see any aftermarket half doors. If they would fit, I'd order the necessary parts from Kubota. It looks to me like the frame and roll bars on the x-900 and x1120D are the same...

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate being added to the forum.

Krone EasyCut 2801CV - 9ft cut, 2 point hook-up, gear swivel head, high shoe skid kit, wide spread baffles, quick change blades, shear hubs and newer type hook tine impellers.

Left over 2016 year model according to the dealer (been on the dealer’s lot probably for a year or more that I know of), which made for a good deal IMHO. Tried to get a JD 625, but they are scarce and priced that way too. I had the dealer price out the Krone and it was about $1,500 less than the best priced 625. So I pounced.

Much thanks to everyone that has answered my questions over the past year or so to help me make an informed decision.

Also, my beloved Hesston (which I’ve got running/cutting like a Swiss watch) will stay around and be used - especially in some rocky fields we are taking back. The Krone will get me a 9ft vs 7ft cut and 24/7 mowing abilities regardless of heavy dew or rain.

Fingers crossed....

Annual forage crop for headlands of row crop

lundi 18 décembre 2017

I am looking into seeding the headlands of my sugar beet field into an anual forage due to the expensive costs of raising the beets. I would have 120 feet on each end. I need something that will keep growing in the fall to suck moisture out of the ground and hold the beet trucks up when harvest comes. We have seeded headlands to wheat put in a wet fall that turns to mush. Quality salable dry hay is what I'm after. Considering teff grass just don't know how long it will grow into the fall. My back up plan it to plant wheat then get a cover crop growing after wheats off. Thoughts of idea?

Can hay compete in Corn/soy country with $3.00 corn?

Hi everyone,

First time poster.  This may be long, so, sorry in advance.

Went home for Christmas, (we're a few weeks early in celebrating, saves everyone airfare).  Last weekend, I went to a land auction with my dad, (prices finally coming down), and then helped him move some small squares of grass hay bought from a friend for the stock cows.

So, anyhow.

guy selling says he's getting $2.90 at the sale barn, and alfalfa is bringing $4.00.

We've never baled more than 1,000 bales a year of square bales, grass and alfalfa.  We've never had a lot of cattle around.  It was always thought of as a second rate crop, we'd find an odd-shaped corner of a field to plant to hay, and bale grass off of land that is too wet to row crop.

I'm thinking, if we can get 4 tons/acre/year, and $4/ #50 bale, that's $640/acre in revenue.  This is slightly better than $3 corn at 200 bu. / acre.  Inputs have to be less.  Less fertilizer? alfalfa seed is expensive, but, not as bad as corn seed.  What am I missing?  Have Just discovered a niche market for a young-ish guy to start farming?

If its part of your complete rotation, you could monetize the gains from breaking up your corn/soy rotation.  Does it make sense to add some alfalfa to a grain farmer's rotation?

What are some honest assessments of input costs?  Anyone in Southwest Minnesota, Northwest Iowa have a handle on realistic yield estimates?

We have some old haying equipment, suppose I'd get nicer stuff if it actually works.

I suppose it's a temporary thing, while everyone is still planting corn ditch to ditch, and hoping for the market to improve.

Maybe slightly better than corn, resulting in not losing money as fast for a lot more work?

Can hay compete in Corn/soy country with $3.00 corn?

baling frost killed Alfalfa

samedi 16 décembre 2017

I have customers that need round bales for cattle and I have 40 acres of alfalfa the had 45 days growth before frost back in late October. The weather looks good starting Monday and no rain or snow til Friday. Will removing the hay this late hurt the stand by increasing winter kill? Also what is your system? I plan to cut Monday rake Tuesday and bale Wednesday will this work or just a waste of time and fuel. I figure I can get $30/4x5 bale. Any help would be appreciated

aftermarket mini excavator track

vendredi 15 décembre 2017

In the process of purchasing a used Bobcat 334 mini ex with a hammer for lowering rock profiles in hay fields.  Seems to be in really good shape, especially for the use I want but eventually I am likely to have to replace the track.  Anyone with experience in using aftermarket rubber track.  My assumption is that the use and demands are fairly different between excavators and skid steers but any thoughts would be appreciated.  Looks like grizzly track is about 1200 for the pair.  thanks.

Bed creep

About a month ago rustyshakelford talked about bed creep in his lighting thread. I had this same problem with our X1100C with a sprayer in the back. After going round and round with the local dealer we came up with putting an electronic hydraulic stop valve in-line between the outlet at the top of the ram and the return. Attacked are a few pics.

Vermeer 5410 Rebel Vs NH 638

Looking to upgrade our round baler.  We currently use a NH 853 and it is soooo sloooowww.  We usually have very good yield but our current baler can take up to 4 hours to get up 10 acres of hay.

We keep the bales on the lighter side so our old equipment can handle and stack them easier (800# bales).  Everything stays in the shed so we aren't really thinking net wrap at this point.  Only put up around 150 per year, but that is somewhat because we are so bottlenecked with the equipment.  I'd like the option to put up more bales.

There is a REALLY nice Vermeer 5410 close by at a decent price.  I used to work at a Vermeer dealer and love the brand.  Just not sure if I want to get into their "economy" line of baler.  It only put up about 250 bales a year since 2013.  Not sure before that (it's a 2009 model).  But there is still paint on the pickup and its clear it has not had a rough life.

There is also a real nice NH 638 that I'm considering.  I just don't know anything about these balers other than they make 4x4 bales.  Are they built for more work than the Vermeer rebel series?

I'd like a NH 644, but the nice ones are a little out of my price range, and the ones in my price range are beat up pretty bad.

I was really surprised that Tribine does not weigh much more than a JD680....and the Tb wheel base is longer. So i am not so sure which one would be worse about compaction.

RTV 900 Floor Panel & Inner Fender Well

mercredi 13 décembre 2017

I recently bought a 2009 RTV 900. Probably paid too much for it but I've been looking at them for some time and finally pulled the trigger.

Cab, heat, hydraulics - everything works - which is great. I knew it had some rust issues so before mounting the plow I stripped the front end down to the frame to investigate. It wasn't terrible - not nearly as bad as I have seen elsewhere - and someone did a decent repair job some years ago.

However, the inner fender wells and floor pan need to be replaced.

Has anyone fabricated these parts for themselves? And if so would you be willing to fabricate another set? And ship them (if not within driving distance)? Of course I want to pay for them - we can negotiate a price. I am shocked Kubota doesn't sell them.

I am inclined to do it all myself, but I'd rather get this thing finished and put back together asap, and I know it's going to take me a long time (shop is full of other projects, it's cold out).

Thank you.

Water in hydraulic oil

mardi 12 décembre 2017

Well I've got another newbie question on my Ford 1715 for you guys. It looks like I've got a tiny bit of water in my transmission/hydraulic fluid. The guy I bought the tractor from had just changed the oil and filter before I bought it so it was nice, clear and clean but as time marches on I've noticed it looking slightly milky. Not bad by any means but none the less I want to clean it up so what is the best way to get the water contamination out other then flushing over and over cuz that filter aint cheap! Ive heard drain and flush with diesel or kerosene but I would like to know the details on the best safest way. Not to mention where could the water have gotten in at in the first place... Thanks in advance...

Front loader on Ford 1715

lundi 11 décembre 2017

Hey folks I've got a few question if you have the time. I recently bought a 1995 ford 1715 2wd with turf tires and was wanting to add a loader to it. Ive been looking at a westendorf 111 but was wondering am I wasting my money adding a loader with those turf tires? According to my buddy I am because I wont get good traction when scooping dirt from a pile with turf tires. Second what would the best bucket width be for that machine 4 or 5 ft. I was thinking 4' would be the best so far as not being wider than the tractor... What do you all think?

Hi out there.... looking for information on an original 1967 Massey ferguson solid state AM radio made by Bendix that I've had for many years. Can a 50 hp pto tractor run a Hesston 4590/MF 1840?

jeudi 7 décembre 2017

I just recently purchased a Hesston 4590.  It is a 2006 with around 20000 bales run through it.  I have a 2016 JD 5065E, engine hp of 65 and pto hp of 50 (according to Deere).  My question to everyone out there is this.  Will my tractor run this baler and if so how would it handle the baler at max capacity.  Max capacity meaning going hard, breaking shear bolts with massive rows sort of capacity.  I know it will run it, I have seen smaller tractors on YouTube running the MF1840, but not to capacity.  I just have not seen or heard of anyone running this baler with a tractor like mine and to the baler's capacity.  If anyone has the answer I would appreciate it.  Thanks.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

For a good cause. There is two of these trains. One runs in the US and the other in Canada.

CP HOLIDAY TRAIN

Quote:

The CP Holiday Train program launched in 1999 and has since raised more than C$13 million and four million pounds of food for communities along CP's routes in Canada and the United States.

"The Holiday Train program is all about local food banks and food shelves and the critical role they play in our communities," said Keith Creel, CP's President and Chief Executive Officer. "People come for the beautifully-lit train and stay for the incredible show – all in the name of community. The holiday season is the best time of the year, and we look forward to bringing together thousands of Canadians and Americans this season for this incredibly important cause and a great time."
Last year I was able to get it at night and tomorrow night in another town I should be able to get it again in the dark. Each town it stops at they have a show basically musicians playing. One of the cars opens up and the band plays from the car.

Kubota RTV x1100c Hood Rack

Has anyone seen someone sell or anyone ever fabricate their own front hood rack for a rtv x1100c? I've seen racks for all the other models, old and new, but not for the cab version. I know it's because it has the cab and the roll bars aren't accessible due to the windshield, but has anyone ever made one? I can't seem to find anyone who sells one.

I did see the one I posted below that supposedly was being sold for a x1100c (at least the description said it was. Yes I know the picture shows it on a 900) but they were no longer selling it and it was like $350. No idea what the website was now, but I saved the picture in case I decide to fab my own.

That is exactly what I'm looking for. One that only attaches at the front and is cantilevered over the hood and can either be hinged or some sort of quick attach to be able to access the hood. Anyone have any luck finding something like this or made their own?

I'd love to have something like this. Storage on a x1100c is kind of lacking due to the glovebox being removed for the heat/ac controls. Plus if I want to use the cargo bed for actual work like firewood or dirt moving I need some other place to hold the cooler! The passenger seat will be occupied by my wife.

I have an old (75ish) Massey 1080, and come winter it is almost impossible to steer. Everything works fine spring to fall, but come sub zero temps and you need Charles Atlas to steer it. Kubota RTV x1100c LED Light Bar

I've had my RTV x1100c for a few months now and I love it. I finally got around to adding some LED light bars. I searched quite a bit and found tons of different types, sizes, and mounting concepts from other people. I went with a 42" led (I think 960 W) on the front and two 4" floods (I think 54 W a piece) on the back. All came from Ebay. Some guys at work helped me with a mount for the front led. We came up with more of an "L" shape bracket that we bent to kind of conform to the curve of the roof to get the led low. I wasn't wanting to increase the overall height of the unit too much with the light and if I ever got into a clearance problem I wasn't wanting to rip the light off. I'll get some more close ups later on of the mount.

I bought a pack of illuminated rocker switches from Ebay and put them in the switch panel just below the radio. They work great. I didn't get any wiring kits or anything from Kubota so I cut off the molex type connectors and added my own connectors to attach to my switches and lights. Not too big of an issue to do. Also, the rear lights are only prewired to the back left mount so I put in some jumper wires to get power to the right side.

Since I took these pictures I had one of the floods cause me a tons of headaches by blowing fuses left and right. Short story, there was some sort of grounding issue with that particular light so I threw it away. I had two extra 4" spot lights from a previous project and decided to add them too. So for the moment I have the left side with one flood and one spot 4" led and the right has one spot 4" led. I'll have to get some pictures of that later on.

If you have any questions of what I did let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

I'm back!!!! With a Deere 946 question

lundi 4 décembre 2017

Howdy y'all, haven't been on in quite a while. We made the big jump from the frozen north, and bought a little house in Jewell, Kansas. Mike, it is every bit as nice around here as you said! No land yet, but I am looking at a few pieces and getting my equipment lined up to be ready once I get some hay ground.
That brings up the questions! There is a Deere 946 MoCo a ways south of us we are planning on going to look at this weekend. First question is just for generic info on the Deere discbines that I should look for? I read somewhere that some had a weak conditioner gearbox? This one is an '04 model with rollers, and a 2 point swivel hitch. And that is the other question. I am planning on pulling it home behind my pickup, do the deeres have a transport drawbar style hitch, or am I going to have to fab up a 2 point adapter for the hitch on my truck?
Thanks guys!

Some of the calves that graduate this week. Weaned, vaccinated 2 rounds, on feed, ryegrass and drinking from a trough. The hardest part was getting them to stand upside down.

Trying a new sale barn that has more buyers and a demand for weaned/pre-conditioned calves. Will have 25 in this group and see how it goes.

Led light bar for roof of x1100

I broke my ankle last Sunday and have a bunch of time on my hands for the next 4-6 weeks. I’m thinking theres no better time than now to do some more tinkering on my buggy. What I’m wanting is to install some light bars on the front and rear of the roof of our buggy.

I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here and wanted to ask the masses what they have done. Trying to decide on the size most importantly. I can fab brackets as needed also but don’t want to get to wild. Would like matching ones too.

Does anyone have info they can share about this project. 40” looks to big and 36” might be to small. Open to suggestions.

Taking it to the dealer sometime soon to fix the lifting bed problem and will get a rear glass screen at that time too

How to service Brakes on 2012 1100

I just got a 2012 RTV 1100 from the south. Low hours (270) but due to be serviced.
All proceeded well until I tried to do the brakes. The master cyl was full and the fluid light colored. Good sign. Normally on a brake service I suck out the master cyl and add new and then bleed the brakes. My service manual shows the system with bleeder screws at the wheels. Guess what? no bleeder screws!! No way to suck out the master cyl because of a fine plastic screen which appears fixed. There is a 10 mm hex plug where a bleed screw might go but no fluid came out even with pedal pressure. And no brake lines at all to the rear wheels! I considered cracking the banjo fittings of the brake lines at the front wheels . While that might work to drain the fluid it might not suffice to bleed air out as it low on the hub. Anybody out there with any ideas?

Heston 560 Round Baler

I am going to start baling 250 acres that a buddy of mine owns.  It's mostly grass with maybe 10-15% alfalfa.  About 285 bales were taken off it last year.  I just picked up a Heston 560 baler that is in immaculate condition for $750.  Always stored inside.  Figure it would be a great starter baler until I get a couple crops off and can trade up.  Anything I should know about this baler?  Problematic areas, etc.

Hey?  Anybody ever use/own one of these???

I'm needing to know at what engine rpm they worked best at.

I'm in the middle of building one, and need to decide whether to gear it to run at idle, or a faster engine speed.

Not sure how much power they require (I'm gonna use it on 90hp tractors) to mix 9cu ft of mud at a whack.  I'm sure 90hp is plenty, but at idle?

Thanks

Round baling corn stalks

Once again I have been asked to RB corn stalks. Same guy asked me last year but we never made a deal and did it. Is this the procedure:
Mow stalks with bush hog set low
Rake stalks into rows
Bale

Now for the questions:
I have a CX-15. It does not have a corn stalk kit on it. Is this a problem?
Do I need to change my rake? Like set it higher than for hay?
Do I need to change anything on the Baler? Should I add more wraps? Currently set at 2.5/bale.
Are the bales typically heavier than average 15% hay bales (I know it depends on corn stalk moisture, but just an expected average would help)?
How Do I charge for it? He has no hay equipment. Is it kind of like I get the guys corn field cleaned up and I keep all the bales? Or do you typically share bales with him? If yes, how many or what percentage?
Anything else?

Torching the windrower

Buddy has a windrower that he bought with the conditioner rolls removed. He priced out a set if used rolls for it and it was half as much as the machine was worth. The conditioners are only about 5 ft Max and thus the windrows are 5 ft wide on a 14ft cut. Has anybody tried making the opening wider to say 8 or 9 ft? I'm thinking that it would increase drydown rate much better.

Loading trucks with Bale Handler/Steffen Systems grapple

First time posting, but spent lots of time reading.  My younger brother and I put up about 8,000 small square straw bales a year ( I realize not a huge amount in comparison to a lot of folks).  We currently run an 8520 Case IH Inline and a 1037 New Holland Stackliner.  Most of the straw is sold by the semi load and getting a time when we can both load or get help to load has been a constant issue, this next year we plan on expanding into alfalfa and grass hay so more bales to load.  I picked up a Bale Handler grapple today, its capable of lifting 18 bales on edge. My hope is to pick from the stacks made by the stackliner and set the on the semi with an f11 farmhand loader.  What's the consensus on this plan? I realize that an f11 on a tractor is not the fastest way to load but without shelling out cash for a bigger skid loader I thought this would be the next best option.  Any insight or ideas would be appreciated.  I would like to stack the bales 6 wide on edge and 6 tiers high. Thanks!

I have a small hayfield,approx.5 acres, that needs to be reseeded. This field has poor drainage and very heavy soil, so sometimes hard to cut hay on time. Flat field, so drain tile is not a option. What type of hay would work in this field? Something that requires more moisture that could help dry out this field.  Thanks  Dan

Sold my Calves

Sold my calves the other day; I was well pleased with what I got. I got a $1.94 for my steers under 500 pounds, $1.69 for my steer between 500 and 600 pounds., and averaged about $1.47 for my heifers.

Got all my cows preg checked and only had one that was open, I have about 5 that are going to be late calvers. I was thinking of selling them, but I think I will just keep them instead. There is no way that I am going to be able to replace them for what I bought them for last year.

All in all yesterday was a good day, but a busy one. I would have liked to watch my calves sell, but we just had to much work to do. We preg checked about 370 through yesterday, of those 18 were mine.

Ford forklift power steering issue

mardi 28 novembre 2017

Have a Ford forklift ( turned around Ford 801 which is not the one father was supposed to buy) that has a power steering issue. Previous owner had a screaming brain fart and welded the coupler on the engine to the shaft running the hydraulic pump, so in order to change power steering belt you literally need to pull the weight box, then unbolt the steering assembly from the engine and slide it away just to change the power steering belt. Have a segmented belt on it now but it slips as the pulley on the pump is also shot. I’ve tried all kinds of different sites for antique tractors to find a new pulley, I’ve found all kinds of selections that are too large, no room for a larger pulley and also the reservoir has a recess for the pulley.

So my thinking is this, why can’t I route the return from the forklift valve stack thru the power steering motor at the steering column? Both are open systems technically, if required I’m sure I could find whatever valve or relief required from Burdens Surplus Center if the flow on the return from the valve stack is too high to route it all thru the steering motor.

ND irrigated Alfalfa

Hey all, new to the forum

I farm in ND. Some of that is in irrigation. With todays grain prices its very hard for me to get going only been on my own for a few years. The irrigation is nice but budgets are very tight. Another thing is that the pivot ground has PH  6.8-7.2. and makes it hard to grow anything productive other than corn and barley. (which i hate dealing with malting barley).

So this is what i got, Some higher PH soils that is on about 1-6 inchs of decent soil then the rest is pure gravel. Like road gravel. So i have compaction issues that need to be addressed every 4 years. Next spring ill be renting a sub soil ripper to break up hard pans. (no-till planting/seeding here ). Then minimal tillage ( joker, pro-till) the rest.

So if a guy would put in alfalfa, is liquid fertilizer an option ( through the pivot) instead of a granular? Again I have compaction issues, So i don't know if i would want a floater going over the top if i can just run liquid through the pivot to meet my P&K needs. there is an irrigated organic alfalfa grower north of me i heard say once in the bar he used calcium and Humates?? and brags about getting 250RFV; but i don't know his yearly tonnage. Ive seen his organic operation and his alfalfa does look nice, very few weeds. But i don't know him well enough to ask more about his operation and how he does things.

So what kind of tonnage could one expect and RFV (obviously if put up right) on irrigation? and organically as well?

What size of square baler would you guys recommend? I hear in ND its best to ship out of state.

Last, what are prices going for conventional and organic alfalfa?

Im pretty much stuck on conventional but at this point I'm open in trying going organic alfalfa after spraying the field pre alfalfa emergence and start the 36 month clock countdown.

Just starting out, which equipment to buy?

I won't be baling much, 20-50 acres. Currently my dairy farmer neighbor does it but he can't always get to it. He doesn't care if I take over doing all of it or just do certain parts myself and he'll take care of the steps that I don't have the equipment for.

I'm in Michigan, these will be grass/alfalfa fields for sheep and cows. My current tractor has 40hp at the PTO and does not have remotes. I'm keeping my eye on the used market for something a little bigger with remotes.

So which equipment to get first considering how I can piece this together over time? Start with a tedder and rake, wait until I figure out which tractor I'm going to use before I get set on a baler and haybine? Any certain style of each type of equipment to look at? The fields here are pretty flat if that makes any difference. There's a Sitrex 2 basket tedder at a local auction that I'm still liking the price on. They also have a Kuhn 4120 rake but that seems to have drawn some attention and it might go high. Would I be better looking at the older style equipment since I'm not doing that many acres, and it costs a lot less. Like maybe just using a wheel rake?

10-34-0/starter set up

Any one use a starter when drilling forage crops/small grains etc. I want to put liquid fertilizer on my drill and seem to be getting mixed opinions on how to do it. Currently I just broadcast all my phos but would like to try dribbling 10-34-0 either on top of the row or close beside it. I don’t want to put it on in furrow because of sandy lighter soil . My thought is that putting liquid on close to the row or close to it would be more efficient/effective than broadcasting map over the whole field. Any thoughts would be appreciated

running some 4" drain pipe but ....hit a rock.

lundi 27 novembre 2017

I rented a ditch witch for last Saturday and dug a trench for burying 70' of 4" drain pipe. But I hit a rock about two inches down in the middle of my trenching.

So, I moved over 3.5 to 4' and tried again. Hit the rock again. Arrrrgggg. Now I'm looking for ideas on how to run the drain pipe anyway.

Possible solutions I have checked on: a jack hammer. A bit much for me to handle I'm afraid ...and it would cost me a couple hundred. So, if paying out that much I prefer to rent a small track hoe with a jack hammer implement on it to pulverize the rock. That will cost 300 to 400, depending on a few variables.

Anyone have a better way to take care of this pesky rock?

Home made grapple question

Anybody ever seen a grapple made with an electric actuator rather then a hydraulic cylinder? My loader tractor doesn't have a remote and will cost about $1000 to put one. The actuator I've found has about a 7 inch stroke and 1000# of force. I thought this should be enough to push the hooks in. If I remember right it's around $300. Seems like it's worth a try to me. Anybody else try it?

Again with the Gleaner k

dimanche 26 novembre 2017

'm trying to cut soybeans in the next couple of days here and I'm cracking about 20% of them if not a little more. I am running the concaves wide open and the cylinder speed as slow as it'll go. I'm having no problems with them threshing but I'm having an issue somewhere with them getting broke. I tried running at the recommended speed and clearance and broke probably half of them I'm trying to figure out what to do here as I've never run a combine before. Maybe taking concaves out will help where would those be located?

Looking for an innovative way to sprig

So, here's the deal. I did some experimenting with Jiggs last year. After attending a "hay day" with the university here I discovered Jiggs seems to like my clay based soil. I purchased a few round rolls green and planted in an small area (about 3 acres) just to see how it did. Well, after I planted I got absolutely no rain for over 2 months. To my surprise when the rain finally came it started to grow is has done very well.

Not having access to any type of sprigger what I did was roll the bales out with the loader as best I could and then used a fluffer to back into this mess to try and spread it out. I guess it worked ok but my soil was so dry it was one big dust bowl.

So, I am looking for ideas on how to better deal with the actual spreading of the sprigs. Any ideas other than using my fluffer? I actually tired to hire some Mexicans from the row crop guys but at that time they could not spare any.

Three year alfalfa/hay contract

vendredi 24 novembre 2017

We are going into a three year contract for alfalfa/hay mix, and I am wondering what would be a good price per 825 lbs net 4x5 round bale to sell back to this guy, as he will buy half back and we will get the other half. We are paying land rent and for the seed, he would be buying it from us as it were off for our own land. We are in the Norwood, MN area.

balewagon vs accumulator

jeudi 23 novembre 2017

Hallo there

I follow you guys for quite sometime ....

i have some questions

Will a bale wagon be faster than a accumulator

I farm 250 acres and make about 30000 bales and have a 1044 bale-wagon but i'm leaning towards a accumulator because off my storage

i have no barn and been always storing outside and tarp it but always loose bottoms etc

i am going to put up a dome 80 x 40  and 100 x 50

if i use my wagon i probably only get 3 stacks side by side in the 40' and 4 in the 50' wide structures and maybe 10 forward in the 80' long and 14/15 in the 100' long structures which is 30 stacks in the 40/80 and 60 stacks in the 100/50 building

that's not that much

i am wondering if i accumulate in the field and then load on a trailer and then go in the dome with my grapple if that's faster or the same because this way i can double my storage capacity

also if anybody knows if these dome drip/condense on the inside because hay usually is a bit different temperature

thanks

Willem

Help identifying “Hay” - not Timothy Hay?

Thought this was 2nd cut Timothy. Told it was 2nd cut Timothy....Not so sure after looking at it. Anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated. Just worried about what it is since I’ve never seen this type before and have no experience with anything other than orchard grass - alfalfa - and Timothy. Worried about feeding to the animals not knowing what it is. Thank you so much! Added photos on here so hope this worked. Seems to have things mixed into it that I can not identify.

Farm king rakes/discmowers.

Does anyone know anything about the farm king haying equipment? I noticed at the trade show that farm king has a rotary rake. Both a single and double and they have 3 point disc mowers. Does farm king make these themselves or are they rebadged? They only had the rotary rake at the show. The rake looked alrighr, price was good. Not as heavy as the krone of the same size, but than again nobody at the krone both would take the time of day to talk to me. I hate that at farm shows. Why be there if your not going to talk to people. End of rant.

Anyways, how realiable are the farm king rakes and mowers?

Properly using an offset disc harrow

I'm getting ready to work up some really rough ground with an offset disc harrow. I have used it in the past and it seems to be a pretty good tool for riding down the humps and high spots......while it works pretty good for rough leveling I also found out that you can really make a mess of a field with an offset disc and leave some big furrows. With the offset disc harrow I was taught to work the field round and round always going in a clockwise direction rather than going back and forth. Is this the best and proper way to use an offset disc? With other tillage tools like a chisel plow or regular tandem disc I make a few rounds around and then start going back and forth in the same direction that I will plant and harvest.

Old 6 bottom plow pulled by Steam

Here is a couple of pictures of an old 6 bottom plow. I was told that it took three people to run the plow by one guy. Another told me one can run the plow so I am not sure. I do know it took two to run the tractor. So it could take up to five people in all to run this.

Oh yes and when you go to an event like this you have to stop in and eat. This is from a stand that three sisters started. They do an awesome job and all the food is great

Health insurance

Now that I parked the combine for the year. One job that I have is the search for health insurance for my wife and I and my son's family of 5 with two on the way. the past couple years I've purchase that during the Open Enrollment time I think our only option is to use that Marketplace. I think a lot of Republicans that shot their mouths off should realize it's worse now then the past couple years prior. In Pennsylvania it's County specific and the county I'm in there are only two plans available for my wife and I and neither of those plans use the doctor's we would use and they are higher priced than before and they put up the levels where they subsidize or help you out in those plans. Anyone else on here applying for health insurance during open enrollment where does anybody see any good alternatives

Windsheid for No Cab X Model 1120D

I am checking to see what our fellow RTVX owners chose for a windshield, if any.

The link to the windshield below is a fast attach and rides on rubber collars attached to the ROPS. It is not a tight seal and some air does get past by design - I told to prevent condensation. It goes for around four Hondo U.S.

Did anyone else get one of this and if so, how do you like it.

If you got another kind, we would appreciate any input you have. This is our first winter with the bota.

Bale spear length

I'm converting my round bale unloading tractor to skidsteer quick attach and will be buying a hay spear.  I've got several 49" spears, but I'm making round bales that are 39" wide, and having the spear stick through can be troublesome when moving lined up bales, so I'm thinking of getting one with a 39" spike.  But will there be unintended consequences? When I buy supplemental hay rounds they are usually 48" wide or more, will I have a problem unloading them off a trailer with a 39" spear?  Thanks!

Grain Sorghum w legume interplant

Many of you are aware of my practice of taking first cut and then seeding forage sorghum for the summer months. This has worked really well to suppress weeds and reduce tillage requirements as well as stretch that fertilizer dollar.
I am considering switching some acres to a grain variety on 36" rows and then interseeding red clover. My thought is after the grain harvest in October I should be able to make baleage from the stubble and lower clover. It appears the height difference should allow for harvest with minimal green material clogging up the old gleaner rotor.
Thoughts on how the interseeded clover will affect grain yield? Thoughts or experience on how clover will do as an understory crop.
Suggestions for a different companion crop?
Thanks

Hard Brake Pedal

I've got a 2012 Toro Workman HDX. 4 wheel disc brakes, manual braking system (no booster). I've had many problems with these brakes and end up changing all the calipers and rotors about once a year to the tune of $1500 each.

I just replaced the brakes on this one, went out to break the pads in, noticed the pedal gradually getting hard after the first couple braking attempts. Once the pedal hardened up the braking quality disappeared. I could stand on the pedal and it slowly stopped.

I re-bled the system just in case, no air came out. I figured the master cylinder must have went since everything else is new (except the lines which are braided stainless) and I have had to replace one on a previous machine a few years back.

Bench bled the master, installed, bled the system again until all air was out. Drove, same thing. Once again I decided to try to re-bleed just to be sure. Got air from the fronts. Drove again, same. If it sits for a little bit, it will brake well for the first couple then get bad again.

At this point all I can figure one or more of the calipers are bad or the pads are junk and glazed over or something reducing the friction.

I just drove it and was easy on it and it still didn't seem right. I'm at a loss.

Spring Seeding Orchardgrass

I have around 50 acres of ground that needs to be seeded back into hay this spring.  One field is about 15 acres that has always been row cropped but has some pretty sizeable ditches in it, I am seeding it to keep the ditches from getting any worse.  The other 35 acres has been in hay in the past but was row cropped for the last 5 or so years to help get rid of a Johnson Grass problem.  All 50 acres were in soybeans last year so I couldn't get it drilled in the fall, so I'm going to have to do something this coming spring.  I am wanting to grow an orchardgrass mixed hay, but I know that it will not produce great the first year and spring seedings are not the best.  What I am wondering about is putting an oat nurse crop in with the orchardgrass, then if need be adding to the orchardgrass in the fall.

Is this a work able solution?  When would I need to plant the oat/orchardgrass mix?

NH 560 prices

dimanche 19 novembre 2017

So, just for fun while I was sitting around on a Sunday afternoon, I went on NH's site and messed around with configuring a 560 Rollabelt.

At first, I thought there must've been a software problem---it came up over $58,000!  I tried a couple of times, same answer.  So I went to Tractorhouse--used at $50,000+.

I must've been sleeping under a rock since I bought my 780A.

Kubota BX1500D information needed.

I am a newbie to tractors. I’ve had shoulder surgery on one side and am likely to have surgery on the other side as well. I have to face the fact that that I can’t do everything I used to. I have a 4.5-acre lot with a large garden. So, I wanted to be able to move snow, move dirt, mow the field and till the garden.

I have a tight budget, so I wanted to buy a used sub compact tractor.
After watching for one for a couple of years a 12-year-old Kubota BX1500 with less than 500 hours of run time became available at a reasonable price and I travelled 90 miles to purchase it. It has an LA181 FEL, a mid-mount mower, and back blade. I hope to add a snow blade and a rear tiller at some point.

The prior owner had quite bit of work done to it to make it ready for sale and provided the invoices. New seat, new belts, oil changed, filters changed, new headlight assembly and switch. Mower deck got a new wheel, new blades, and one of the spindles replaced.

But, of course, there are some issues. First, no owner’s manual. Didn’t seem like much of a problem at first as it was assumed that copies were available for download online.

It seems that is true for nearly everything other that the BX1500. It turns out this tractor was only made for three years, 2003 to 2005. Mine is a 2005. So, I went to the local dealer to see if they could order one for me. The answer was yes, and the cost was $20.
I ordered one. Turns out the dealer didn’t research enough to find out that the manual was one that superseded a previous version and now applied to BX1800 and BX2200 only.

The dealer said they couldn’t refund a special order, even if it was wrong. They also said it would be virtually the same, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

There is plenty that is not the same.
• Specifications – different engine means different fluid capacities
• 3 pt hitch – this manual says Cat 1 but dealer and others have said mine is Cat 0
• Are the dimensions really the same?
• Implement Limitations Spec Page – are they correct for the 1500?
• Instrument Panel (dash) – definitely not the same
• Fuse Block - 1800 & 2200 are different, so I suspect the 1500 is also different.

These last two points are an issue for me at the moment. The dash is missing the lens over the Low Fuel light. The graphics for the other lights have disintegrated. Upon removing the plastic face (most of the adhesive had failed) I found several socket areas to be empty with no bulb or bulb socket. I don’t know what each bulb represents and have no reference in the new manual. I have figured out a few from a 1500 specific parts manual I was able to download. Also, tail lights and turn signals not currently working.

I know there have to be others who still own and operate this little tractor. If anyone can help me with any of the above missing information I would deeply appreciate it.
