Bill bugs on Steroids?

Out bushhogging hay fields today. Lots of apparent billbug damage on both the fields I was clipping and on the adjacent farm. Lordy, we went to orchard grass because there were fewer pests but these things just wipe out patches which then become foxtail, crabgrass (if you are lucky), and lately goosegrass. Why are we so lucky?
