Starter repair

lundi 31 octobre 2016

drove rtv 1100 into water hole at hunting club wasn't expecting it to be deep, big mistake.
now starter started to sound like battery was week but battery is good, now starter just spinning not engaging. new one almost 600.00. very expensive mud hole. Any ideas on a replacement or repair. Auto parts has one aftermarket for 130.00 but it says it fits all models. When I called Messicks they had to call Kubota it lists two of course mine was the more expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Power washing rtv1100

dimanche 30 octobre 2016

Well, i changed oil today and left the dipstick out while engine was running. It sprayed oil out onto everything. The engine was dirty from the dusty summer and needs cleaned anyway. Is there anything i need to watch out for when i power wash it clean again?

Tractor tire chain fitting

Not sure if this is the best place for this, so I apologize in advance. I am running R4 tires on my Bobcat CT 235, and as such clearance is tight. I got a kit from  http://ift.tt/1fYWBJq. Its the Tygg H pattern. I have used a lot of chains, but never fabricated one up for a specific fit. I am attaching the photos of the trial fit. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. I am hoping to get the inside chain a little higher on the sidewall. I have good tensioners for the outside once fit.

Mods You have done to your RTV

samedi 29 octobre 2016

Hi folks:
I just bought a 2014 kubota RTV-X1100c with 200 hrs on the clock. I had my local western plow dealer install a Impact V plow to it not long after I got it. I have a set of amber LED warning lights that I'm installing soon for plowing. (our 1st snow came early this year 10/27 wasn't much but you never know) I was wondering what other people have done to there RTV's to make life easier. I'm not sure what I could do as this 1100 seems to have everything already. Tricks of the trade for working on them are also welcome.

Self propelled swather vs triple mower mounted units

I'm looking at buying a new mower conditioner for grass hay. I've got a NH 1431 rubber on rubber as well as a JD 946 impeller. Looking to go to a "one tractor" unit. Either a self propelled disk swather (16') or a the type of mower that mounts to front and rear 3 point hitch to make a 30' cut. Looking for opinions on both types as well as what brands you would recommend. I run beef cows and feeder calves. Cut around 500 acres of wheat/ryegrass along with 500-600 acres of fescue/orchard grass.

thank for your help with this as i am hoping to get a baler soon and would like to make bales at about 50 Lbs.

Kight Upgrade to the RTV

After an encounter with a trespasser a couple weeks ago, I decided I needed to do a light upgrade to the RTV.

First up were some 18W/1200 lumen lights from Signstek off of Amazon: http://ift.tt/1Ai8jrQ These are the same lights that I installed my Kubota L4330 tractor.

These were mounted to the front grill as shown here:

They added a pretty good amount of light but didn't really get into the Wow! area as far as lighting up the front of the RTV.

So I decided to double down and buy these LED light bars from Amazon/Nilights: http://ift.tt/1Ai8jrQ

These are 120W (no lumens listed) LED light bar with a combo spot/flood pattern for good coverage to the front.

Pics:

Tonight, I'll take night time pics and show how it lights up the dark, stay tuned!

... Freak out

I have that moist aka damp hay that I baled Tuesday if I remember right. Well I haven't had time to take any internal temperatures yet. Plan on that today. Anyways behind the barn is a burn barrel. Apparently my wife's cousin was burning trash. From my house it looked like the smoke was pouring out of the barn..... I sprinted over to check it out.... And took a big sigh of relief.

... Freak out

Planting delima

Well we are 12" ++ behind on rain, we haven't had 2" sense June here, very dry....

I was going to plant about 4ac into Fescue this fall but things are so dry it won't work, so here I am thinking I could maybe find someone to sprig the field next summer with Bermuda of some sort..

My problem is I free choice feed round rolls to the horses & cow at the same feeder, I don't believe my horses will do good eating that much Bermuda hay anytime they want... & I really don't want to do that different as it works great...

So, without a small sq machine what to do with the Bermuda rolls ???  Not much of a market for hay around here unless ya give it away for 20$ a roll...

I don't really want to leave the field empty next year waiting on maybe planting Fescue and then not being able to like this year...

Thoughts on a plan going forward from those that know more please.....

I haven't had good luck with planting Fescue late fall with dirt that is powder ...  I haven't plowed the field at all after I nuked the Teff a while back, the dirt turns to powder just driving across the field so no working will be done for some time, at least till a good soaking rain anyway..

Thanks fellas....

What's this made of?

KIMG0230.jpg KIMG0232.jpg

I'm thinking jersey/red Angus mebbe Hereford. He's polled whatever he is. He was 35 lbs in June. He is now a touch under 400. Short and fat. Not real beefy. Great eater. I

What's this made of?

Rototiller vs Plow and Disc and Harrow, etc.

Does anyone out there besides me use a rototiller for plowing hay fields? I used to moldboard plow and disc and harrow, and always thought of 3 point tillers as not tuff enough to handle more than a couple of acres at a time. Then a few years ago I ran into an old timer that turned me on to a rototiller brand called Northwest Tillers, and my perspective was changed. It took my a while to find a good used one that was the right size and model, but I finally did and I haven't hardly touched my conventional equipment since. It's possible that it's a little bit slower, and I realize that one method is never right for everyone, but in my opinion the advantages out weigh the disadvantages: It replaces at least three implements with one, it's easier on both the operator and the tractor, it finely tills, chops and buries the old sod leaving a ready to plant seed bed after a couple of passes, and it has no problem with sod bound ground that most plows have a difficult time with.

The one that I have is 8ft wide and has a basket roller on the back. I run it with my 100hp Kubota, and I wouldn't want any less power. I just tilled an 18 acre grass field with it this fall that I figure hasn't been plowed in 24 years, and was heavily sod bound. I tilled first pass at about 1.5MPH, and the second pass at about 2.75MPH. I'll leave it set for the winter (we don't fall plant here) and then till it one last time before planting it into a Timothy Orchard grass mix.

Does anyone out there do anything similar to this. Just curious.

Late haymaking

Went by my new orchard grass fields yesterday.  mix of 1/3 Tekapo, 2/3 Extend (late mature date) seeded in teff stubble Sept  1 2015.  Got three nice cuttings of beautiful hay this year already.  Top dressed with 60units N with S after first and second cutting.  Dang stuff is thick as all get out, and almost 20 inches tall again.  Sure is tempting to cut.  Stuffed the genie back in the bottle and tripple wrapped it with Duct tape.  NO OCT HAY and I don't make silage so Nov is out also.  Too bad, sure looks nice.   Step away from the discbine, Rick....

New Holland BR7000 series net brake problem

Question for mike10, was there an official NH fix for the net brake being quite tight on a full roll of net, but not braking enough on a near empty roll?  Never had a problem with this on my 7090 till this year, then suddenly the net wouldn't start wrapping because the tail was almost nonexistent.  Had to back the brake off and lengthen the knife arm linkage to get everything happy again.

OG late boot stage

I am reading that it is best to harvest OG during the late boot stage.... or early boot stage???  I am having a hard time figuring out when this usually is in Michigan in the spring time.  I'd like to get first cutting next year started at the proper time so all subsequent cuttings are more lined up.  I understand weather plays a large factor into this but just looking for some insight.  I'd like to cut every 6 weeks after first cutting "weather permitting."

For highest quality hay, orchardgrass should be harvested in spring during late boot to early flowering stage. Beyond this stage, digestibility decreases at the rate of about 1/2% per day. Aftermath growth can be harvested at 4- to 6-week intervals. Production and cutting frequency are greatly affected by soil moisture, temperature, fertility, and disease.

and I read this....

Cutting and grazing management greatly influences forage quality, productivity, and persistence. Quality is most affected by maturity stage at harvest. To obtain high-quality preserved forage (hay or silage), harvest orchardgrass at early boot stage. See Figure 8. Delaying harvest until head emergence or early bloom increases yield but reduces quality and regrowth.

Time to change the tires on the RTV900

These are the original tires on my 2004 which are now in need of replacing. They are the OTR 440 Mag Off Road tires and they have held up great. 25x11-12 on the rears and 25x10-12 on the fronts. Replacement cost are about $90/tire on eBay.

I really do not want to spend a lot more than that. I'd like to go a little bigger without rubbing issues. Any recommendation on what to go with or should I just stay with the original brand and size?

I use it for mixed used, yard clean up and for hunting. I don't do a lot of off road stuff and I don't want a tread pattern that will tear my yard up either, but I don't want a turf tread either.

Conditioner Roller

Hi

I make top quality hay for horses, has Dryer for hay where I dry 84 bales at a time and up to 250 bales, round bales size in 48 "height 59".

I make hay in Denmark, and I have a challenge in dry hay, out on the field enough down so it is storable. (12-18%)

It's hard to get moisture in the hay below 23-30% before we bale, would like down to about 20-25% before we baler.

Grass is timothy and other grasses are the most stem as alfa alfa.

I tend it 2 times per day for 3 or 4 days and bale it on the 4 day. (round bales)

the leaves are on the four days dry, but the stems are not, especially the knees are difficult to dry.

mower we use is with flair conditioner in Europe.
However tried one individual mower with rubber rollers with cevron pattern, a new class disco, where the pressure on the rollers were held with a spring and the rollers could not be adjusted perfectly, = there were spaces between them.

The weather in Denmark in summer:

In day time 22-26 degrees celcuis humidity 45-65%, at night 15 degrees celcuis and humidity 100%.

I go and are considering whether to buy a mower with steel rollers Vermere mc 1030 because parts can be reached at Lely Denmark.

have considered to build the Circle c super conditioner after the steel rollers on Vermeer mc 1030 = 2 types off conditioner steel on steel and rubber on rubber with air suspension.

or and reconditioner Recon 300 or macerator 6620th

Have read almost everything online about conditioning and crushing of grass straw.

Is there anyone who can help me, to tell about their own experiences.

Best regards
Eriksen

Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!

When I first start my RTV 1100 I hear that sound for 30 seconds or so until the engine warms up. If I turn the A/C off it stops. If I turn it on it starts again. Then, after about 30 seconds it stops altogether, both with the A/C on and off.
I hope it's nothing serious. I don't have a trailer to tow the RTV to the dealer's, and he charges $80 to pick it up at my place and return it. And the dealer's shop charges an arm and a leg for repairs.

Opinoins on small square balers

Hi folks some really good reading here for sure!
Any how here is my story: Pops is getting older and so is all his equipment, baler is a NH 310 that has baled too much cordwood....don't ask.. and needs to be replaced. What is a good reliable baler? Needs to make 40-50# bales consistantly and be able to run behind a 40hp tractor in a bind. Have 97hp availble.
Oh and JD stuff is out of the question.. local dealer is horrible.
We do on average 10-15k bales a season except this year.. drought killed us only made adout 5k. Anyways used or new if its not too $$ center or side pick up?

Realistic Yields

Going over a soil sample form to get some soil analysys' done and one of the entries to fill-in is "Your Yield Estimate"

I gather that a big variable in maintaining/improving one's soil conditions is some expectation of the desired yield....

Here's what we got for next year:

Established Timothy, one field Clair, one field Climax.

A couple of new fields with Clair Timothy.

One field - legacy mixed grass.

One field to be planted in Teff grass

Our Timothy is a one cut and done deal.

The Teff and mixed grass will be cut through the summer as necessary.

Considering the above, what is a reasonable tons/acre yield to be expecting/estimating for next year's fertilizer/lime planning?

Any wisdom is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Certified Fescue Free Hay????????

Anyone ever heard of certified fescue free hay? Got a person that is interested in some hay of mine, but is breeding a horse over the winter. They want "certified“ fescue free hay. I'm thinking endophyte free hay would deliver the mail for them.

Question is - are there labs that can perform such a certification? Is this type of testing common/practical?

If there are labs that do this - any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Tell me about a power harrow!

lundi 24 octobre 2016

How do power harrows do for leveling and making a good seed bed? Could I plow or chisel plow and then go over it with a power harrow with packer in the back and be ready to plant? I know they are expensive but that would cut out a disc and cultimulcher if it would. I don't have a problem with rocks.

Flail Mowers - what do people think of them.

I looking at getting a Maschio Gireffetta 160SE for my Bobcat CT 235 tractor to do field edge clean up and ditch bank mowing. Also for pasture maintenance. I understand these units do a much better job of mulching and not leaving grass clomps like a 3pt rotary does. Thoughts?

PS: I can handle the weight. after working with my new hay rake that weighs more.

disc cultivator

I would like to buy a disc cultivator to tow behind my RTV 1100. There are so many on the market I can't decide which one I want. When I read the reviews I become even more confused: X falls apart after a couple of hours; Y is too light and just bounces on the ground without cutting into it; Z is too heavy...
I don't have a hydraulic system on my Kubota to raise or lower the cultivator, so I'll have to use one that hitches on the ball (no three-point hitch) and that is raised and lowered manually with a crank. I also would have to tow it two miles one wayon a paved highway to plow my food plot. Any advice? Thank you.

Relative feed value tests - I am more educated

Attached are some feed tests (samples) that I recently had analyzed.  After reading these sample (numbers 1, 2 & 3), then try to answer these questions:

  • Would you (should you), feed this to horses, goats, sheep, beef cows, etc.?
  • Should you let them have any of these free choice (all they can eat)?
  • What would the veterinarian say about feeding these choices?
  • What would your customers say about these feeds?
  • Do you have a personal option on the quality of these samples?

I know that they show RFV (relative feed values), I am looking at a different vendor, to be able to get RFQ (relative feed quality), test results, but that will be next year's project.

My education continues, I will post more information later on these samples.

NH 648 string wrap

Hello all, well I'm done for the year bailing and will be spending some time getting things cleaned up for winter...  if it ever cools off and rains here that is....

My NH 648 round baler has trouble with wrapping the string on the roll....

The string starts and wraps good until the end of the rap or outside edge of the bale...

When it gets to the edge of a roll the string just stays in the same place and makes several wraps then cuts the string like normal BUT...

The trouble is when I dump the roll the string starts unrolling off the roll also.. wtf ???

The baler string doesn't "move" any while wrapping the ends of the string and doesn't lock the string and if the roll rolls any when dumping the string always comes loose from the edge of the rolls..

The baler does have the roll kicker and I always back up when wrapping due to my exhaust being under the tractor, dump then move on...

I'm wondering if their is anything I can do that will help this, it gets old messing with the string that doesn't want to stay on the roll.. I have the baler rolling tight rolls and the string is tight on the roll it's just the outside edge string needs to move some so the string will catch itself and hold itself on the roll.... remove the kicker maybe, but that won't help the string .....

Anyone have a fix .....

Thanks, Chris

What size finish or offset disc?

samedi 22 octobre 2016

How big of a finish disc or offset disc do you think my John Deere 6120r 4x4 without loader will pull? The ground is flat to slightly rolling, with a clay silty loam mix. I am thinking about buying a large hydraulic fold tandom disc 18'-24' wide. My gut says it won't pull it, but I plan to buy a large cheap tillage tractor one day so if it doesn't pull it I will just keep it folded up. Is that a bad idea?

Getting your ground weed free??

vendredi 21 octobre 2016

In the spring of 2015 I picked up 25 acres that was loaded with pretty much every kind of grass and broad leaf weed you could ask for. I wasn't worried about broad leaf weeds to much because I knew I could spray them out after planting orchard grass, but the crab grass and Johnson grass had to go since couldn't spray it out once I planted the Orchardgrass. So in the spring of 2015 I sprayed it with glysphate let it green back up sprayed it again and did this every month which was four times. In August I disked the ground up cultimulched and seeded with my brillion. The new orchard grass came up awesome and very very clean so I know this system works. My question is there another way to exhaust the ground of weed and grass seeds without taking the land out of production for a year? I hope to close on 54 acres of new ground in December. As of right now I plan to plow it this winter. Disc and cultimulch in the spring to create a false seed bed. Let the weeds flush burn em down and do this 4 times like I did on my last property then disk and cultimulch the ground next fall and plant.

Round baler comparison by make

I sell small square Bermuda bales to mostly horse customers.  I use mostly John Deere equipment except I have a three year old New Holland square baler that I bought new cheaper than I could a John Deere used 348 square baler.  I have customers who have horses and cattle asking for some round bales as they prefer the quality of my hay.  I make more money on squares but the addition of a round baler would give me more options on sales, convenience, ability to bale hay that has been rained on or degraded to less than horse hay quality.  I'm retired except for my hay sideline so being able to bale rounds and leave them in the field until I got back from pleasure trips would be a big plus.

I have been looking at John Deere 467s, 468s, and a few 469s but the one's I like are all in the $22-30K range as I don't want junk or ones with over 10-12K bales run through them.  A local Kubota dealer has a 2013 New Holland BC-7060 or maybe it 's a 7070 with only 2800 bales, mega wide pickup, twine and edge wrap for about 20K. Said it was a recent trade-in but I don't have the details.  I like the idea of newer model, less bales, etc for a baler at the lower spectrum of my price range.  We have a New Holland dealer within 30 miles with a good baler tech and two John Deere dealership at same distance but I don't know anything about their techs.

I have been very pleased with my New Holland small square baler but everyone I know in my area buys only John Deere's and gives them great reviews.  Anyone have experience with New Holland Round Balers?  I won't be doing a lot of round bales compared to my squares , probably less than 400 per year. Would appreciate any reviews or recommendations including helpful options like belt dividers, feeding flares, etc.  This baler will be exclusively baling Bermuda hay so no silage, corn stalks, straw, hay grazer, etc.  Thanks

Bill (hay wilson in TX) Wilson

Today I got a PM from our good member and educator Vincent Haby. He spoke with Bill Wilson today and said Bill sounded good, but is occasionally still having some temporary memory loss that comes and goes.

It sounds like hay wilson in TX, as we know him, has probably retired from farming as Vincent said Bill told him that he had sold his place and was just enjoying life now.

Life goes on for all of us....some of us will be like Bill and health will force us to retire...some will retire because they just get tired of ag...and some will be forced out for economic reasons. I guess what I am saying is to enjoy it now....for tomorrow is not promised.

Thank you Bill (hay) Wilson for your expertise and wisdom....and especially for helping to make "Haytalk" a very credible and resourceful website.

And thank you Vincent for contacting Bill and informing us.

Oh, btw, I purposely placed this into the Alfalfa forum as Bill dearly loved his lucerne.

Kubots RA 1035 Rotery Rake Extras

jeudi 20 octobre 2016

Greetings folks.

I have been reading through all the manuals, parts books, literature on my new Kubota RA 1035 Rake (mfg by kverneland group  http://ift.tt/2eMtzpB;). In the literature and in the assembly manual were some options I am wondering if I should get to add on. I already have the boogie wheels and dont need the lighting group.

One option is the tine safety clips. They attach to the tines near the arm to keep a tine attached if it breaks. The also appear to keep the tines aligned. I can see this saving my baler knives, but dont know how often tines actually break. The other option is some sort of shock assembly at the head stock. Anyone know anything about these. Other than having to flip a set of the boogie wheel over it appear to have been set up correctly, including the rotor tilt.

If anyone runs one of these I would love to hear about any tricks of operation.

Thanks

X1100C tie rod removal

I've searched the forum, but can't find any posts on removing a tie rod on a X1100c. I bent mine and got a new rod, but I can't get the old one off. I have the workshop manual, but all it says is to remove the tie rod. Am I missing something? I did find a video on another site that said his Mac Tool guy came by and had a tool to do the job, but he didn't show how to use it. And, the audio left a lot to be desired.

The piston rod turns with the tie rod end. I've tried vice grips on the piston rod, but it just turns inside the vice grips. There must be a way to get this thing apart.

Anybody know how?

dry enough?

I don't have a moisture meter or anything technical to measure moisture.  My hay is dry"ish" what I mean is some is dry some has moisture still in it...  without knowing for certain the moisture content I don't know if I should bale or not.  I could keep waiting which wont hurt unless it rains of course.  My info is very vague I understand but can hay that has more than ideal moisture still turn out if it's close "enough" to proper moisture level or is it always a certain disaster.

I keep raking opposite directions only using the end of the rake to just flip it... or I raise the left side and lower the right to kind of feather it out or spread it out.  With the humidity high and mainly cloudy days it's drying really slowly.  I've obviously have it cut and mainly dried out.... I'd really prefer not to lose it at this point.  Is it worth baling in the next couple days and crossing my fingers? Or smarter to not bale at all unless it's dried for certain...

What to look for in a Round Baler

I am interested in buying a new to me round baler. I prefer Deere since I have three dealerships all with 45 miles of me. I have been picture looking at some in my price range. Before I go look at them in person, what are some things to look for when looking at a used round baler? I notice in older posts that some are talking about chains and sprockets and belts, but what else? I have looked at 466, 467, 557, and a 567 online. I prefer net wrap bales. The guy that does my round bales for me now prefers a 4X5 bale and I like the way they fit on our trailer. Dont have much experience with a 5X5 or 5X6 bale...

I plan to pull it with a JD 2955. Will it pull these balers on flat land, with grass hay?

There are 3 567s that I have been comparing. The most expensive is 7.5K more than the cheapest, but it says it has the monitor. Can I use the wrap without the monitor or twine only?

Any insight would be appreciated.

My hosting and ISP renewal bills have already started coming in for next year so I hope to cover those and other anticipated costs for 2017. This year maybe we can cover the whole year. We got close last year but came up a few hundred short partially because of the unplanned solid state disk upgrade.

Expenses do have a way of creeping up each year. I hope your generosity continues and we can cover the biggest part of the expenses. Then I try to fill the gap with advertising that is not to obnoxious.

Bale watch monitor

I have a '98 John Deere with a bale watch monitor. All it does is show bale shape and beeps when bale is getting to size. Can I swap it for a baletrak monitor that kind of looks like it but has the lights as well? Does the baletrak auto tie? Because that would be nice as right now I have to manually tie with the electric controller. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help/advise.

Selling teff

mardi 18 octobre 2016

I planted teff last year and really thought it was an outstanding grass. Tested good rfq (can't remember the numbers right off the top), yeilded great and had potential to make a bunch of money. However my experiment on my one acre test plot left me with about 100 bales of "funny looking hay" that was eventually donated to the local ag college. I used my best marketing tools and was only getting the "nah I'll pass" or the "can I come try one bale" from the picky horsey people.
The other day I was approached by a neighbor who asked what the best way to go about rotating Alfalfa while still keeping a hay supply, and I suggested teff and told her my results. She became very excited and hired me to take over her feild to plant teff. So now I'm in a pickle, she wants to go shares on teff to feed her horses but I'm hesitant in the idea of planting something I can't sell. I also don't want to tell her no and close the door on the opportunity to farm the Alfalfa the following years. So how well are you teff guys selling your hay? How did you market teff? Thanks in advance

Horse Nettle Herbicides w/o Residuals

Got a horse customer that relayed a story to me the other day out of concern that I use herbicides on my Timothy hay.  The comment was, "how soon do you spray before you cut the hay?"  The reason for the question was, apparently a friend of this person bought some "really clean" hay, fed it to their horses, scooped up the horse manure and recycled it onto their garden.  Residuals were in the hay and they put a major hurt on the garden.

GrazonNext XL has residuals and I'm starting to associate super clean hay with herbicides that have residuals.  There is a lot of it sold around here and I probably wouldn't be to far off the mark to assume the "really clean hay" had GrazonNext XL sprayed on it.

Before I bash GrazonNext XL - which is not my intent, I'd like to use it.  Amazing that Bristol Va and Bristol TN are separated by a state line.  There is a supplemental label that allows GrazonNext XL in Tennesee, but not one foot across the line in Virginia - go figure!  My preference would be to use GrazonNext, which sounds like a terrific herbicide and will kill Horse Nettle, among other things - and inform the customer - don't put the horse manure on your beans....

Speaking of Horse Nettle.....

I've got some Horse Nettle.  I don't use any herbicide with residuals to date.  I hit the Nettle with both Pasturegard early spring and then with 2,4-d after the first cut.  I don't recall seeing any Horse Nettle of any amount when I sprayed Pasturegard, but saw a bit when I sprayed with 2,4-d.  The 2,4-d stung it, maybe some of it died, but I've still got some Horse Nettle.

Here is a link to a Virginia Tech PDF regarding Horse Nettle:  http://ift.tt/2dZEzg8

In the article under "Control in Forages", it speaks to the use of triclopyr and 2,4-d.  Crossbow is such an herbicide combo - and has no residuals.

The article further states, "Long-term control of horsenettle, however, is much more difficult to achieve. High rates of Remedy® or Crossbow® will provide acceptable levels of long-term horsenettle control (Table 2); however, repeated applications of these herbicides over several years may be required for complete elimination of severe horsenettle infestations."

There is no table 2 - unless I'm missing it.

For some reason, I think I've read that 2,4-d is effective at killing or maybe the right term is burning the leaves, but does nothing for the roots????

Crossbow has 16.5% of triclopyr

Remedy has 60.45% of triclopyr

Pasturegard has 45.07% triclopyr - not as much as Remedy, but has almost triple triclopyr as Crossbow.  The Virginia Tech publication is silent on Pasturegard and Horse Nettle.  Maybe the publication is a bit dated?

Anyone having luck with Pasturegard alone killing Horse Nettle?  I just can't remember from my past experience with it.

I realize to rid Horse Nettle - is a multi year process.

Anyone have any success with other non-residual herbicides and Horse Nettle?

Doing a little planning for next year.....

Thanks!

Bill

Hayguard Preservative

Today, John Ashworth representing ISF(Hayguard) came by the farm. He had some information for me about my Hayguard woes of blistering paint. Seems that my mention of Hayguard in my applicator tank having a very strong odor got his attention. He further investigated and found that this was a common thread of folks who were experiencing paint blistering. When you buy Hayguard in the tote or barrel it comes odorless.....I happened to have a partial sealed container and checked it while John was with me and it was odorless. The Hayguard in my applicator tank would knock your sinuses out of your head.

Seems that the culprit was too much oxygen constantly getting into the applicator tank preservative due to the lid venting constantly. This constant oxygen supply causes the properties of Hayguard to change over time and evidently increases the Sulphur strength....which in turn causes the paint blistering. This is why some folks experience blistering of paint and some don't as others may use all their tank mixture in a day or so and then others may have some Hayguard remain in the tank for weeks....absorbing oxygen.

John gave me a new lid for my tank that vents only when the pump is turned on....I believe he said it was a Dohrmann lid and it would now be supplied with Dohrmann applicators that were going to use the ISF product.

I remember John telling me last year that he was totally bewildered by the paint blistering as not everyone was experiencing this phenomena. This sounds like good news and I am anxious to try out the new tank lid on my applicator. He said that when FarmerCline and myself were having conversation about the applicator odor here on Haytalk that was what got him thinking about our situation and he and the ISF people started exploratory investigation. Hayden, I believe that John said that he was going to pay you a visit next week.

I sure hope this solves the problem for everyone that experienced blistering, because I know that Hayguard works well for preserving hay. If anyone would like to contact John with any questions you can reach him at john@isfusa.com.

And if you need a new lid that only pulls oxygen when the tank pump is turned on I believe you can get those thru Dohrmann Enterprises.

October grass hay.... stressful

I am posting this as another update to my hay learning process.  I cut with my sickle bar IH 27V starting on Friday (ran out of day light) and finished on Saturday.  It promptly rained Saturday night and Sunday morning probably an inch or more.  Against better judgement and probably good advice I raked it up yesterday... I know I know it dries better unraked but I just couldn't let it sit there totally saturated.  I thought if I raked it the ground would have a chance to possibly dry up a little.  I thought that by drying up the ground when I raked the next few times it would be better situation.  It did look ridiculous raking wet green grass...... I knew ahead of time that we were supposed to have high winds last night and all day today.  Another thought was that if I raised it up a little in a windrow the wind could blow through it better than if it was flat.

I just got home from work and ran out to check the field.... I was PLEASANTLY surprised how much the windrows had dried down.  I picked up some grass and it was a little crunchy which was promising! The bottom was still damp but not wet.  I'm guessing it was greatly in my favor that the windrows were moderately sized instead of large.  The forecast is calling for 0% - 20% chance of rain through next Monday.  I know this means jack crap this time of year.  I'm hoping to flip it tomorrow after work let it dry all day Thursday and if need be rake again Friday and bale.  I'm really hoping it doesn't rain...............

Culbac vs Hayguard preservative

Looking for some thoughts on the two preservatives. I understand the liquid form of Culbac can be applied when cutting and is a lactobacillus? All I put up are small squares for horse feed. How will the Culbac work for horses? Hard to find any info on this. I have varying  windrow conditions in all of my fields trying to save the windrows that won't dry down when the rest of the field is ready to bale and perhaps get it baled a bit sooner. Regards

Harvesting Teff grass seed

My neighbor had 90 acres of Teff grass this year. He took off two cuttings , but the wet weather in September prevented taking the last cut. It now looks like straw and probably has little or no feed value if he could cut it and get it to dry. I was wondering if it could be combined and harvest the seed for next year? Anyone had any experience harvesting Teff gras seed here?

Handling Baleage

A couple weeks ago I made some baleage in 4x4 rolls.  First time I have done this as hay was damp and rain on the horizon.  I do not have a bale grabber or such and sell all my hay.  I only have a bale spear.  Can I spear these on to a customers trailer and then tape up the spear hole so the bale is in airtight plastic once again and does not spoil?

Should I?

I am starting to wonder if I should sell my nh 256 rake in the spring.  I would do this to generate some capital to purchase a dual purpose rake.  I've been told by many of you my current rake is a one trick pony.  What are my two trick pony alternatives? I'm assuming there is a rake that can be set to fluff or windrow.  If you could give me some to look for to help me in my search it would really help me out.

First Baler: NH 650 auto-wrap

samedi 15 octobre 2016

Hey Folks,

This is my first time on the forum. I am in need of equipment to bale around 50 acres of hay next year (round bales: bermuda and bahia mix). I have the tractors needed (see screen name), but I need to find a baler, mower, rake and may pick up a tedder. I am trying to keep my expenses as low as possible since this is such a small amount of land. I have a local gentleman interested in selling some older equipment he isn't using. He has a 1995 NH 650 auto-wrap and a Kuhn 7 disc mower he will sell together for $2,500 and he will throw in a transfer fuel tank made from a semi-truck diesel tank. The baler is my main concern, it is in fair condition and has been shelter kept.

This is what I know about the baler: It was baling fine when he last used it, it has been sitting up for two years (scares me), hydraulic hoses are good except for the hook up ends which have about a foot with no rubber left that will need replacing, Four of the belts are okay but two are questionable: they might last for a couple years or they might pop on the first bale so if I do buy the baler I will probably buy two belts to keep in the truck, all of the pickups will need to be replaced- some are broken and some are bent, the chains all seem to be in very good condition and do not have excessive play, one of the belt guides on top of the baler is bent slightly, the baler will have to have two tires and I have no idea how many bales it has baled.

So all together I am looking at having to buy two tires which I plan to buy used if possible, new pickups, a little hose work and two belts which may or may not be used immediately.

The mower is a 7 disc kuhn that has also been sitting up for two years. I would say it is in fair condition as well and don't know the year. I know it has one bad bearing that will have to be replaced before use, but all of the others seem to be okay and the blades were replaced right before it was parked with the bad bearing. The frame seems to be solid, and the tarp is currently in one piece. I really won't know more about it unless I buy it and get it home.

I could spend a little bit more money if I had to, maybe double the asking price of this deal, but that will be about it. I would really prefer to keep this operation on the cheaper end if possible, but I don't want to buy something if it has a track record of being a shop bill and I am not familiar with anything new holland. We don't have a dealer near by, but I would be ordering most of my parts online no matter the brand. I am sure you all already know this, but this baler has the buzzer system not a monitor. I have been assured I will be able to hear it in the cab with the back glass open, but I have never ran a baler like this.

I have searched the forum and read several threads about these balers, but if anyone has any input or knows anything you think I may need to know or should be looking for on this equipment I would greatly appreciate your help.

I am young and at the very beginning stages of building a commercial cow/calf operation from scratch for secondary income. I am trying to do as much as possible out of pocket over the next few years to get established. I want to keep my equipment expenses as low as possible, but I don't want to end up spending more money buying lower end equipment than I would if I just saved longer and spent a little more money to to begin with.

Thanks in advance.

Ideally, I'd like to make about 5-600 3x4's a year for mushroom and about 300RB's for my cattle guys.

3x4's infinitely easier to ship and my buyers pay 10% more per ton for 3x4's than 4x5 round bales.

What is the story on Befco Rotary Rakes?

This is my first post so I should start with some background.....  First, I would be classed as a hobby farmer, we have a 10 Acre hayfield and may be picking up another 20 acres or so next year.  Both fields are mostly orchard grass and clover.  For the last three years we paid to have the hay cut and baled but it is getting harder and harder to get this done when the field is ready.  This year we kept getting pushed back for almost a month and by the time the field was cut it was mostly stems.  I understand that the farmer has to put his fields first and our little 10 acres isn't much to get excited about.  I have been looking at used balers for the last couple of years and just last week I bought a JD214 in good condition and an old Sicklebar for $550 so now I am looking for a rake.

Browsing the second-hand market I noticed that the Befco Rotary rakes are significantly cheaper than any of the other brands I see.  In my area I have a 10 Wheel Befco offered for $850 that I am considering but there is a NH 258 Rollabar for $1200 that looks good as well.  Which would fit my small time operation best?

Bermuda Grass, Coastal, Tifton 85 & 44 - Stand Life?????

Been reading a bit on Bermuda grass and it's variants. While some can be seeded, planting sprigs sounds like has the most common?

What I haven't found is how long does a sprig'd or seeded stand of Bermuda grass last. Timothy 3-4 years is a common read, OG - thinning out after a few years....

What kind of a lifespan in years does Bermuda grass offer?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Bill

Johnson Grass - It's Coming.....

Over the summer around my neck of the woods, in addition to the usual milkweed, stick-weed, Queen Anne's lace that I see in fields as I drive around the area, this year for the first time, I really noticed small patches of Johnson grass taking hold.  On our farm, we don't have it - yet, but killed a patch that was beside to our land next to a highway.  I see a LOT of it along the roads.

Not sure where the seeds are coming from, maybe trucks hauling square and round bales through the area are dropping Johnson grass seeds.  We have an autumn olive problem around here too and one of the main culprits over the years is wild life eating the seeds and poop them out onto other properties as they move around.  Maybe that's where some of the Johnson grass is coming from.

So I want to be prepared for this potential invasion.

I understand the herbicide part of killing Johnson grass, but have some questions about toxicity of Johnson grass and how to understand/deal with it.

The concern is not necessarily stress and/or frost induced prussic acid.  I think I might understand this.  Sounds like the cure for prussic acid is to wait for a couple weeks after a post drought rain or a frost and it dissipates?  If you bale Johnson grass, wait about a month and the prussic acid dissipates too?  I can find much info Johnson grass and prussic acid issues, however, straighten me out if any of the above isn't accurate.

The concern is nitrate poisoning.  How does it occur, is the toxicity permanent?  In other words, we get a frost or drought stress period, will the nitrate levels go back down to a safe level prior to cutting/baling or is there another trigger for nitrate poisoning?  I'm to understand that if the nitrates are in Johnson grass when cut, you're stuck with it whereas prussic acid dissipates over time?

I gather horses can tolerate Johnson grass better than cattle due to how they process gas.  Sounds like cattle will bloat and suffocate on toxic Johnson grass?

When you find Johnson grass, how do you deal with the toxicity - especially nitrate poisoning side of it?

Some I read say it's great hay, some say it is a noxious weed.  I don't want any part of it (I think), but would like to know the fall-out if there is a patch that comes up in my fields over next summer and beyond.  I think in our area, ready or not - Johnson grass is coming....

Thanks,

Bill

Fall Spraying For Weeds

Clearing another field and it's got every weed imaginable - but to my surprise a pretty good stand of mixed grass, likely OG and fescue of some sort.

Typically when I clear fields like this, I take a full years cutting on them as they stand - less the weeds and briars to both generate some immediate revenue, allow lime to do it's thing and just see what I've got in a hay field before plotting a path forward.

The question I have is - how late can I spray for weeds in the fall.  It's October, we are a week or two from a frost.  Is it to late to hit this field with 2,4-d or Pasturegard or GrazonNext or something else - other than round-up and have a nice weed kill?

Thanks,

Bill

New Holland BC5050 square baler slip clutch adjustment

lundi 10 octobre 2016

My small square baler, New Holland BC5060, jammed during the end of my last cutting.  I actually got some smoke from the slip clutch but after removing the plug I was able to finish baling.  However, I sense that it might have slipped during some of the heavier hay inputs.  I have a 150 hp tractor on the baler so there is plenty of power to make a clutch slip if not adjusted properly.  I went to the New Holland dealership today and talked to the baler expert.  They didn't have a service/technical manual for the BC5060 baler but he said to just add one turn on each bolt in the slip clutch.  I asked if I installed two new slip discs how would I know how to correctly adjust the bolt tension.  He didn't have an answer.  I could not find any help on the internet yet.  I think I will give the tension bolts one more turn each and see what I get.  I would have expected New Holland to have a procedure where you torque to a specific value or use bolts/springs where you tighten all the way.  Anyone have any experience with adjusting the slip clutch pressure plate or know the correct procedure?  While I'm soliciting help for flywheel slip clutch, does anyone know if there is any adjustments for the pickup and/or auger?  Thanks.

I just checked oil and it is low. Dealership closed now. What time of hydraulic oil can I use to top off? Any UDT or Super UDT? Thanks in advance, I'm using it tomorrow for hunting and can't wait til Monday to get Kubota brand.

4000 series Deere tractor will a bandit?

I currently have a 6120r tractor and yes I really like it and haven't had any problems with it with the 300 hours I put on it this year, but every time I see a 4000 series Deere my mind says now that's a tractor. I guess it's just what I always saw in the fields growing up. Will a 4450/55 work with a bandit? I know it has barely enough flow at around 21gpm, but the bandit recommends 2900 psi hydraulics and on tractor data the 4000 series are usually rated around 2200-2300 psi.

Update on My first year Baling Hay

Hey guys, I just wanted to come back and make a quick update on my first year baling hay with all our new to us equipment. This is a follow up to this post. http://ift.tt/2dmj7jb

So just to recap,

  • I first bought my tractor a 1968 JD 3020 in September of last year. I have put 100 hours on this tractor in a year. I know not all that much but this is the first year.
  • We bought a New Holland 617 Disc mower at auction sight unseen and ended up having to rebuild the gear box but still go out cheaper than buying one at a local dealer.
  • We got a Haymaster 8 Bale accumulator, unfortunately my land isnt flat enough to use this as much as I would like so I need to find another option. Looking at Steffen
  • Bought a Hesston 2 basket tedder, I sure wish I bought a 4 basket.
  • The Baler is a NH 575 and I drove about 2hrs there and back to get it at a really good price.
  • I got a NH 256 rake from FarmerCline and it has worked with out issue this far.
  • I also picked up a Steffen 6515 Bale grapple at auction but have yet to use it.
  • In addition I also added a few running gears that need to be built out into wagons still.

I made some modifications to my tractor this year, I switched it over to a 12v system, I moved the loader hydraulics off the rear ports, I finally identified the loader after chipping some paint off its a STOLL, and after contacting Stoll I found the Model is a super 2 Loader. Now my Loader is frankenstein, it is a Stoll Loader with a NH quick attach and a Kubota Bucket, more on why later. I also added a new power distribution block and switch panel so I could add some LED light Bars.

The past year has been particularly interesting, the company I was working for closed its doors, the parent company offered me a position to relocate to another state but after moving my daughter around multiple times in her life I made the decision to seek other employment. As a kid who moved a lot I know what its like to make new friends every few years. After 6 months of unemployment, while working on my Disc mower and buying parts at a local AG dealer I decided to see if they were hiring. My background is in Service Center managment so long story short I now manage a Service Center at a tractor dealership. I know I am new to AG and am learning the tractors and equipment but running one is basically the same concept as the other service centers I have managed in the past. I have learned a lot working there and go out and work with the mechanics as much as possible. Since I make a bit less than I was my equipment buying has slowed a bit but this is how I ended up with a Franken-Loader.

Now on to the hay, after using some weed killer that was a little bit, well, indiscriminate on what it killed, our first cutting was basically a total loss, I think we got all of about 50 bales total. We wont be using that again. We re-seeded all of the fields it was used on and we ended up with a fair second cutting. The Disc Mower, Rake, Tedder and Baler all work very well. The first cutting a shear pin broke on my knotter on the baler but that was a simple fix. During the second cutting a bolt fell out of the needle to plunger safety catch on the 575 and I had to do some panic or alternative repair to get it up and running since it was Sunday. The following day I ordered the proper stuff to fix the problem. It took me some time to get a decent bale out of the machine. I attribute it to a learning curve, figuring out what does what to adjust density length etc. I learned that the windrow size/uniformity and land speed drastically changes the bale as well, I am still working to get that perfect but they are pretty good now. I know there are plenty of how-tos and information on learning this but I am the type that learns by experimenting so this was best for me. Our yield is very low but out of the fields we cut at Second cutting we got about 1000+ bales at about 50lbs a bale for most, some are heavier.

I still need to pickup a decent accumulator, looking at the Steffen 1550. I still need to make some repairs on the JD, I need to rebuild the steering, reseal the front pump, rebuild the brake booster, replace the hyd lines on the loader and I really want to paint it. Then I want to make some more modifications to it such as a joystick remote with a third spool, take my existing loader control valve and use it to add another set of rear Hyd ports.  I also need to finish building the Hay wagons from the running gear that I got. We are also having to add on to our barn for more hay storage and equipment storage. I would like to pick up some more land to do and our neighbors are already asking if I can cut and bale their hay. Some want a 50/50 some want to pay per bale. Next year should be a decent year, We have the no till seed drill rented in November and are going to resew a couple more fields.

We have been picking up hay out of the fields for years and have known that hay is hard work for a long time. This is the first year we cut and baled with our own equipment. I have to say that I like it. Its hard work, but to me there seems to be a peace when working the equipment and a different sense of satisfaction when its all done. Again thank you everyone for your input, guidance and assistance.

Just for fun here is a video of my drone following my tractor while raking the field. Dont poke fun, I missed some hay but I was trying to watch the drone. https://youtu.be/bSESW0LbIVo

Belt tracking on 660NH

vendredi 7 octobre 2016

My neighbor has a NH660 and the belts don't track straight, on the top rubber roll it's the worst. The belts push rather hard to the left and one belt will even try to run underneath the belt next to it where it can. Tried adjusting the 2 rollers at the rear bottom of the baler but it seems to have the most problem on the top front rubber roller. Is there an adjustment for that & since everything looks straight in the machine could it be caused by the tensioner if it were to be sprung somehow? I thought maybe Mike10 might have an idea what to look for.

Pasture Cleanup

Hi all..  closing on my new farm this coming week and need some advice on puring up my bermuda.  The front pasture was for growing hay, and the back 2 pastures were horse paddocks.  I went out and grabbed some soil to send off for testing this afternoon, so I don't have those numbers yet, but I noticed that since the horses have been off of the back pastures that the bermuda has come back good and strong.  The horses unfortunately gave the weeds a good boost and the soil is compacted badly.  I'll probably hit those with a shank renovator to loosen the compaction, but what is a good method to use to clean up the bermuda in all fields?  Should I wait til about late January to mid February (central Georgia) and just burn down the fields with RoundUp?  The front field was recently hayed, but appears to be a mix of bermuda and fescue.  I want to pure that up as well.  The bermuda in the back pastures is grown up beyond the point it should have been harvested in my opinion.  Should I bush hog it down for the winter and spraying?  Sorry for the novel, but thanks for any input.  The pics are the most prevalent weeds I saw.  I also have the typical yellow flower field weed (but white).

For want of a screw...

Today I went with my wife to refill a feeder. I parked the 1100 by the feeder, letting the engine run in neutral with the parking brake set. When we were done I tried to release the parking brake, but when I pushed the side button the handle (the plastic part with the button and the finger grooves) came up the shaft and remained in my hand. Fortunately my wife saw on the floorboard a tiny black screw. There is a tiny hole on the bottom of the handle. The screw enters that hole and locks the handle in place by being lodged in a groove in the shaft, thus preventing the handle from riding up the shaft when its button is depressed. Good thing the Missus had her Leatherman Wave with her, so I was able to fix the problem. Securing a handle with a tiny screw seems to me a very flimsy and cheesy design. If the handle cracks, or the tread in the plastic becomes enlarged and/or worn with prolonged use and age, the screw will fall out. If it is not found, or if it cannot be seated firmly again against the shaft, there will be no way of releasing the parking brake. I did not expect such a cheap contraption in a very expensive machine.

rtv 900 speaker placement

I have looked through a few posts and haven't found what I am looking for yet. This will sound somewhat crazy or genius depending on which way you look at it. Has anyone added to there roof or found a way way to add bigger speakers 6.5's or maybe a pair of 8 ' s without losing any headroom or interfering with the cab kit with heater. I'm about 6'1 and need the leg and head room and already have an factory overhead console installed.

Irrigation Pump Question

I am considering purchasing a water reel to irrigate some 5-6 acre pastures that I have. The pastures are hilltops with thin topsoil, and are prone to draught. Each pasture is surrounded by woodland so there is no way  to "go big" with something like a big reel, center pivot, etc. I have a nice size creek running through the property to pump out of.

I always buy at auction, on the cheap, so I am looking at some of the water reels that I can pick up from a turf farm or school district. The kifco B140 appears to be fairly common. Running two of these reels would cover my field and require around 150GPM of water.

Now, the pump... I would like to get a diesel trailer pump. That would be the easiest to move, and I can find them around for fairly cheap. The problem is all the trailer pumps are BIG capacity. Like 400 GPM and 4" pump outlet.

Will these pumps work if you throttle the engine back to an idle?

I wasn't sure if centrifugal pumps will pump at low RPM. Low RPM pump with a hose split to run two reels would probably get me close to the water I need.

How much to bale and bundle?

jeudi 6 octobre 2016

So I bought a bandit, and told my neighbor he now wants me to bale and bundle his hay for him next season when I'm not baling my own hay. How much should I charge to bale and bundle the hay? No raking or anything just baling and bundling. I think there would be a pretty good opportunity to bale and bundle a lot of other people hay around me, but I don't want to wear my equipment out for nothing. So it has to be profitable for me to do it.

Home made side dresser

I am going to try to make myself a side dresser this winter. I have an old 24 row band sprayer for the frame. My thought was using double disc openers from an old drill. I plan to pull my 2300 concord cart and run dry urea... any reason the openers from an old drill wouldn't work to get the fertilizer in the ground? Also is there any reason to go with liquid N other than convenience? Because urea is significantly cheaper per actual pound of N.

Picky Round Bale Customers

I was just wondering if anyone has been having the same experience I have had with selling big round bales. This year there seems to be a lot of round bales in my area. Had a lot of rain and the hay season was a tough one. We have quite a few round bales and they are all stored outside. Our good small squares are in the barn. I have had several calls inquiring about our big round bales and they want them without mold. Hello! They are stored outside! Then today, I sell a couple of big rounds to a nice couple that drove over 50 miles to get some hay. They call me later in the day stating that one of the bales smells really bad and has mold all the way through to the middle. They are peeling off the big round bale layer by layer to feed their goats. Boss tells me to let them come back and get 2 more big rounds. I tell the customer this and also remind them that they are round bales, stored outside. We are fortunate that we got up some good hay this season (in small squares) but others did not get any good hay up at all due to the heavy rains this season, hence, a lot of big round bales. I am thinking I will need to get even more of a thick skin fielding all the phone calls from picky buyers. I describe the hay as honestly as I can but it is, after all, just hay and not a Swiss watch. I think its going to get rough out there for us hay sellers and picky buyers will either have to adjust their standards or go elsewhere!

Rotary Rakes - Kuhn GA 3201 GM vrs Kubota RA 1035

In looking at my local choices I am comparing the above two. Some good folks have already told me the Kuhn is a good unit. Anyone running the Kubota RA 1035. How do the windrows compare if folks know. I am retiring my old Ford 503 side deliver model this year.  My dealer sell both, but is currently out of stock on the Kuhn. The Kubota rakes roughly 1' wider, but is 100 lbs heavier too. Also is appear the center rooter requires some maintenance over the Kuhn being totally sealed unless I am not reading correctly

Thanks

Tilted left

I am sitting at a sale right now and a lot of these Holsteins have a tilted head. At first I thought maybe it was a one off due to a tough birth or stiff neck from transport. 5 so far have come across the scale. They sure don't bring much. Any clue on what causes it? They have all tilted left and the ear and eye are also slack. Almost like a stroke.

X 1120 D Overheated

This past Sunday, I was riding to check my trail cameras, and my overheat alarm sounded. I immediately killed engine, turned key to on position, and fan ran as it should. I let machine sit with fan running while I inspected all hoses, and fluid levels. I could not locate an issue other than water reservoir was just a hair above low line (and im guessing that was only because of overheating and evaporation). It took approximately 10 minutes for engine to cool to normal operating temps (between 2 and 3 bars on digital screen). I was able to ride it out of woods and down county road 3 miles back to camp at full throttle without anymore overheating. I loaded up machine and took it home, where I again checked all fluid levels, topped off reservoir with water (only held about 8 oz), cleaned radiator and screen. I then rode machine in low at wide open throttle, for approximately half an hour, and operating temps held at 2 bars (normal operating temp). I'm pretty stumped as to what caused this, unless the thermostat just simply stuck for a brief period of time. I only have 80 hours on machine and have had no other issues. Anyone else with similar experiences, or suggestions as to what caused this?

Chemicals

Mike (Vol),

In my last Farm Journal (I just got this week), in the first few pages (I don't remember the exact location, left hand page top, it was 5.30am) is a piece about chemicals their breakdown, etc. that I thought might be of interest to those on HT. You have to register to access if my memory is correct.  But I am not that tech savvy, can you post or do I take a picture or scan and post, after I remember to bring to the office.

Where can i find a Monitor for a Vermeer 504L baler?

Our monitor for our Vermeer 504L baler was ruined after the cab on one our tractors leaked recently, I need to find another One ASAP. Any ideas where we could find reconditioned or used one at a reasonable price? Have priced new one thru Vermeer dealer, would like to see if there are any other options out there. Any help wil would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Model MAX25 and eMAX25

I am looking at several of these models and I have a questions. If I get one without the backhoe (I have seen some with the TLB versions of the Max 25) can I easily add a backhoe later or do I need to do a lot of work additions...like plumbing for hydros and do I need to add a subframe at an additional cost? Do these models already come with what is needed to simply add a backhoe to them. Most small tractors have no subframe for a backhoe unless the package is ordered together. Thanks

Four Wheel Drive not working

Helping a neighbor drag a bar joist frame with my RTV 900 and noticed the front wheels were not spinning. No noises or anything but now the lever to engage 4 wheel drive goes in and out with little effort. It always required a firm push on the lever with rocking back and forth to engage before.

Knotter fans

dimanche 2 octobre 2016

I have a Welger AP71 conventional baler and was considering fitting a fan to blow across the knotters to keep them clean.

I can buy new car radiator fans from 10" to 16" (25cm to 40cm) that will fit into the gap nicely.

I was expecting to power it from a car battery sitting on the baler rather than run a cable up to the tractor (one less thing to get tangled).

I'm keen to hear from anyone who has fitted their own knotter fan(s) and what they would do better next time.

Placement

Does it even work

How long does it run for on a car battery

Silage (wrapped grass) season starts around the end of October and hay will be late December. So I have some time before the fan is needed.

Thanks

Shane
