Hello, I am new to the forum and in the process of converting some no till corn/wheat/bean cropland into hayland. I am in southeastern VA, near the Chesapeake Bay. Our soil has about a 6" deep layer of sandy loam, with sandy clay beneath. It is not uncommon to have a 3-7 week drought in mid summer, which can seriously stress the traditional grain crops. My goal is to produce small square hay primarily for horses. I am not going to include any traditional fescue in my mix of grasses, as it is not well accepted by horse owners in my area. I am going to disc and cultipack a firm seedbed and start planting with a grain drill with small seed box around September 1. I plan to plant about 10 acres this fall. Grass varieties that I am considering are Persist Orchard Grass, Persister Prarie Brome, and Max Q friendly endophyte fescue. My concern with the Max Q is that the data sheet states "Not suited to drought prone, low fertility sandy soils". Does anyone have experience with Max Q in somewhat sandy soils that are subject to moderate drought conditions? If Max Q is not a good choice for my mix, what other grass might be a good companion plant for orchard grass and brome? Thanks in advance for any advice!
