Rotating out an old pasture.

samedi 20 mai 2017

I have a field that used to be a cattle pasture. Currently it is mostly orchard grass and Timothy. This field would most likely be classified highly erodible I have been making hay on it for the last several years and am tired of bouncing my machinery over the rough surface. My plan is this.
Make several cuttings this year on it. Plow it down this fall or late summer, for the soil and plant a ryegrass on it. I would then make baleage from the ryegrass next spring and plant back to a nice mixed hay. Am I missing something here or would you all tackle this differently. I could plant a row crop in it but hate waiting two hay seasons to get a hay crop back in.
