Look what the Montana Fires did to The Sun

jeudi 31 août 2017

I took this earlier tonight. I sent it in to our local weather channel who then posted it on the weather report. Smoke from the Montana Fires has moved to our area

This in bold is what was said about the red color tonight.

Particulates in the air such as dust, smoke, or moisture contribute to these vibrant sunsets. Most colors of the spectrum get filtered out except for reds and oranges.

JD 467 Low Voltage message

Almost finished this weeks hay patch when the low voltage message started popping up when the Baler is net wrapping the bale. Monitor is plugged into convienance plug, tested plug through monitor by going to channel 15...monitor indicated over 14 volts. There are times when the Baler starts to wrap, but then low voltage message pops up and netting is not cut. Any ideas on what's going on?

Used Vicon RS410T Tedder - thoughts?

mercredi 30 août 2017

Hi there.  I'm looking at a used vicon RS410T tedder - has anyone had any experience with them?  I'm upgrading from an old grimm 2-star (the 410T is a 4-star) - do about 20 acres a year, planning to increase in the coming years.

The one for sale has a new paint job (for some reason - hiding something?) and the seller is upfront about two rims that need some work, but otherwise says it is in great shape.  Going to look at it in a few days, but wanted to hear what you all had to say about Vicon tedders of that vintage / line.  Any chronic problems I should be on the lookout for?

Thanks!

(attached are pics sent from seller - haven't looked at it yet!)

JD Square Baler Experts

My 328 bale measuring mechanism is very touchy.  A bumpy field gives me fits.  I end up with all kind of different length bales.  Has anyone ever replaced the sector and roller? Or are there other adjustments on the assembly?  The owners manual is not real clear on this.

Non clog

Has anyone ever put stub guards on a sickle mower? I bought a jd 39 as a back up mower this year, and I haven't had many clogging problems until I got in my Reed canary grass. It was a bit damp underneith and lodged. I managed to get it cut ok but the guards on this mower are shot and I'm looking to put something on that's a little better. I currently have the standard double guard that would be used on early jd swathers.

Used Krone parts?

Hey haven't posted up in a long time. But I"m hoping someone has a line on some used sheetmetal for a KR130/KR125. I bought one at an auction this weekend. Its pristine except for where the previous owner fed a big chunk of firewood in. I need a twine box floor and the curved piece of sheetmetal that goes down in the front under the twine box.

Thanks!

Really getting pissed with Art's Way/Miller Pro

mardi 29 août 2017

What experiences have the other Miller Pro users here had?  I bought a Miller Pro 900 rotary rake a few months ago.  I bought it seeing it get God-like status here and I have no doubts about those at all.  It's a SOLID unit, built very sturdy.

But several things on it are just STUPID and I have to ask what the hell kind of an engineer did this?

--the spring pins that hold the tine arms on are metric; 10 mm and 6 mm.  Good luck finding those locally, I had to special order through Fastenal and getting an extra set was something to the tune of $40 with shipping just for stupid spring pins.

--The plug for adding oil was rounded off very well, so I thought I'd get a new one.  Well, it's 3/8" British Pipe Thread.  Once again, good luck finding that locally or even online.

--The plug for the oil level is 1/4" British pipe thread--another stupidly obscure size, and has a square head instead of a hex head.  Being between two tines on the gear box makes it impossible to get any kind of wrench on there so I had to get a special set of Universal sockets that could work on a square head.

--I called Art's Way (the company who purchased Miller Pro about 10 years ago) to order these two new plugs and the guy on the phone was not friendly or helpful in any way.  I asked how much it was, he said 'I don't know, don't have the prices in front of me.'  And that was that.

--Today, a lady from Art's Way called me to tell me one of the plugs was discontinued and listed as an obsolete part number.  I said 'are you serious?  This is a plug.  It's not like it's a highly specific part for this machine.'  She said 'that's just what the computer says.'  I said 'do you still make the Miller Pro 900's?' She said no, so I ask 'how long ago did you stop making them?' and she said 'I don't know, we don't make them here.' And that was that.

So far they're 2 for 2 grumpy, 2 for 2 utterly unhelpful.  I'm an Iowa boy so I'm disappointed at this crappy Iowa service.  Westendorf has been awesome for me and All States Ag Parts has also been good.

All these freaking obscure foreign parts...these were made in Wisconsin. What's wrong with an Imperial size spring pin, or NPT plug?

Love my rake, hate the company, rant over!

V rake size for following NH1411

What size V rake works best to pull 2 windrows together from a NH1411 disc mower.  Heavy alfalfa / grass hay in Northern Illinois, will be round baling with a Vermeer 605M.  My local dealer suggests a 12 wheel v rake set at a sharp angle.   I am concerned that is too wide.  Not sure if a 8 wheel is wide enough.   I have never operated a V rake, always used a side delivery roll bar rake.

Burning Used hydraulic and or motor oil

I have a 2016 RTVX 1120D .Does anyone burn used hydraulic oil or motor oil for fuel? I have a source of 2 to 3 hundred free gallons of used hydraulic (Mobil DTE25 and shell equivalent) per year from changing out injection molding machines. I checked other threads but the one I found wasn't too active aside from hating California, lol. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kubota(Vicon) disc mower leak

My 3 year old Kubota 2028 disc mower has been puking oil out of the top of two different discs.

Took one apart and there wasn't anything I could see that was wrong. It is not leaking around the O ring.

It is coming up through the bearing some how.

Does this sound like the sealed bearing has blown a seal?

Took pics and diagram to the dealer and they were unable to offer anything helpful.

Market Research - Hay Drying Machine

I have a market research question for hay producers, particularly those raising hay for horses.  We have about 40 acres of alfalfa/orchard grass from which we bale about 10,000 small square bales a year for sale to people with horses (except any bad hay we round bale and feed to the cows).

We have found that it is becoming increasingly difficult to dry alfalfa hay evenly while still maintaining color and keeping the leaves.  Usually, when the hay on top looks dry and ready to go, there is some higher moisture hay underneath that will be enough to make the bales, well, questionable.  Our typical process is to mow the hay in the morning (with a mower conditioner), ted the hay the next two mornings after the dew comes off, then rake the hay the next morning after the dew comes off, and bale it that evening so that we can just barely get done before the dew starts coming in.  Sometimes on baling day we will ted it in the morning and rake it in the afternoon if it we thought it wasn't going to be totally dry.  Maybe the weather changed or maybe I'm crazy, but it seems harder to dry the hay than it was 20 years ago.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue, note that we live in KY and have humid summer days and generally get a heavy dew at night.  Most of our customers are very against any type of preservative, such as proprionic acid or those other preservatives that use some type of active bacteria to prevent mold.

So the question:  If there were a machine that would dry small square bales from 30% moisture down to 15% in 12 seconds, would you be interested in purchasing it?  The machine could either hook to the back of the baler, or be pulled through the field to pick up the bales, dry them, and put them back down (or on a trailer, etc.).  For the sake of this research, let's just assume that such a machine exists and works as good as advertised.  The return on investment could be relatively high, given the improved hay quality (and higher sale prices).  The hay would be dry with more leaves, better color, and fresher smell.  It would be all natural, with no foreign substances being added to the bale, and the bale would not be heated over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  It may even save you a trip or two across the field with the tedder.

How much would you be willing to pay for such a piece of equipment?

Sizing loader to grab

What size loader (preferably tractor) would one be looking for to operate an 18 bale grab to be able to move stacks from a self propelled stacker and ideally be able to stack a layer or two above the stacker piles? If going higher isn't realistic without a much larger tractor, then we'll just forget that for now.

NH 630 Round Baler Chain

Im having issues with my round baler. Yesterday a chain broke from what i can tell due to the idler pulley bolt snapping. I fixed the chain and the bolt and after 12-15 bales today again the chain broke. Any ideas what i can look for to see why could be causing it to break?

Thanks

Great farm management product Agrimap.com

I am no way connected to this but thought I would highlight something I came across from New Zealand.

A year ago I was trying to find something to help manage our family farm from far afield when I came across this while I was travelling in NZ. I was attracted to it as I thought it was a simple program our workers and my parents could use

Anyway both have been able to easily use it so I thought I would share.

SEATBELT RECALL on ALL Kubota RTV's

I just purchased an NEW RTV-x900w, and the dealer JUST called me to tell me the good news and the bad news. Good news is the RTV was there and ready to be delivered. Bad news was that he had a "SALES STOP ORDER" from Kubota. ALL of the RTV's have the seatbelt real an he is waiting for kits to make the necessary repairs/changes. Says Kubota will NOT allow any to be transferred and/or registered till he gets them changed out on NEW vehicles. Existing owners should contact their dealers about the recall. FYI!

Pasture renovation. Best seeder?

Any advice of the best, cost effective seeder for an almost novice to start doing over-sowing of fields and also putting in my own oats for hay next year?

I am in south west Western Australia in a high rainfall, rich soil area (not the norm I know).

As per some other posts I am just back on the farm to help out my parents after being away for 20 plus years.

We have the biggest farm in our area but my parents have never invested in this until the last few years but when they have they are now spending a fortune on contractors.

What I am looking to do is find something something I can sow oats with but also over-sow our fields with more pasture seed.

Appreciate any advice.

Straight Pipe

A earlier post reminded me of a question I've had for awhile.
Are there many straight pipes out there? Does it sound awesome? Increased performance? Just curious.
One of the mufflers broke off on my Cummins A few years back so we just decided to cut them all off and straight pipe it. my fuel economy went way up as well as performance, and it sounded awesome especially pulling a loaded dump trailer out of the rock quarry. After a few old people scowled at me and a few kids cried when I drove by I put a muffler from summit racing on it :-).

Best starter round baler?

I am looking for some advice on a simple round baler that an almost novice could keep going.

I and my wife and kids are just starting a new life back on the family farm after about 20 plus years after being away in white collar work.

In the between years I have always been the free labour for my parents and reasonably practicable with everything else hay-wise but never baled as we always had an old faithful workman, who kept our old New Holland baler going with some baler twine and some old fencing wire. But he is now well into his 80s and no longer keen to keep going.

Last few years we have had contractors do the baling, latest one is pretty good and reasonably priced, but I am keen to reduce costs and do it myself.

We do around 3,500 round bales a year (meadow and oats) and looking for some recommendations that I can get to grips with that aren't too complicated. Also reliability is obviously critical.

Appreciate people's thoughts.

Can we kill something

dimanche 27 août 2017

Is there a way to kill all the interfering adds on haytalk.  IE is unusable on this site and I have been using Firefox for posting, but it is getting to the point where it is almost as bad as IE.

I can type a word in a post and then have to wait several seconds for the next word to be displayed or the work may not be displayed and I need to retype what I had already typed, and then the crashes I am experiencing is getting kind of aggravating.  In IE you can see in the lower left corner words flashing like it is loading ads and can see the word ad in the sentences that flash by.  In Firefox the little icon on the left side of the tab is constantly flashing like it is loading something.

It is not just my home computer, but the different computers I use at work.

My Ipad is also giving me problems with my posts I am working on suddenly disappearing.  I cannot say if this being caused by the site or if it is an Ipad problem.

The interesting part is while I am typing this I have not had any issues, but then there are no adds being displayed except at the bottom and it is not actively changing.  .

2014 x900 broken exhaust

I know there has been discussion about broken exhaust here before. My 2014 x900 finally did it. I have around 3500 miles and 500 hours on the machine. I have the extended warranty, so looks like I'll check it out. I dropped it off at the dealer Friday. The tech told me he has seen a couple or so of them do this. The exhaust pipe broke just aft of the flange where it bolts to the engine. I discovered it before the aluminum housing, further back, broke. So, hopefully it will be a simple bolt on repair. They had to order the part, so I don't expect to hear from them until late this week. You don't realize how much you use it until it's not available.

Finally Done with my Access Road

Well I finally finished up my Access Road, a Field Rejuvenation and some major Ditching Work.

My wife and I are tired; it was a 3 year project but we managed to get it done in 3 months doing all the work ourselves. The only supplies we had to buy was lime, fertilizer and seed for the field renovation, while the rest we provided ourselves. The labor, equipment, rock and even gravel.

The latter was kind of interesting as we needed a foot of gravel on 475 feet of road, or 350 cubic yards. We have a dump trailer, but it only holds 1 cubic yard, so yes we made over 300, 1 mile round trips towing it with our Ford Explorer. To fill it we used our 25 hp Kubota farm tractor.

The project was so big we needed a bit of help, I built two homemade implements to make it easier; a homemade grader blade that went on my log trailer, and a ripper that went on the back of my tractor to help plow up gravel so it would be easier to dig in our gravel pit. Both helped tremendously.

Here are some before and after photos.

Oil change questions

Hey all.

Just got done changing the oil and oil filter on my 2015 Mahindra 26 xl shuttle. So I kept the side of the tractor off until I was done as to tighten the filter if I need to. My question is I had a small leak at the filter so I tightened a little more and my oil pressure gauge is still on. Should I tighten a little more??

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Mixing grass with alfalfa

I have been told that mixing grass with the alfalfa will make the alfalfa easier to manage......easier to dry down and less problems with leaf shatter on the alfalfa so I'm going to give it a try. My current alfalfa customers DO NOT want a mix but I have never been afraid of trying a different type of hay and finding a market so I'm not too worried about marketability.

My question is what kind of grass should I mix with the alfalfa? It seems like orchard is the most popular choice but I'm having issues keeping a stand of orchard that I can't seem to resolve. If I can't keep a stand of orchard when taking 2-3 cuttings a year I don't see how it would stand up to being cut up to 5 times in an alfalfa mix.

Tall fescue would probably be the hardiest cool season grass to plant here but fescue is a dirty word to the horses hay buyers so that is a no go.....even if it is endophyte friendly.

With Timothy being pretty much a single cutting crop this far south that won't be a good option either.

That leaves me with brome......how would it preform in a mix with alfalfa? I have a pure stand of 'peak' smooth brome I planted this past spring and I have been pretty impressed with it so far. It appears to have done well here and has regrown very well. I have read though that brome does not tolerate frequent cutting so I'm not sure how it would last mixed with alfalfa.

Any other options I'm overlooking?

New Holland 1047

Picked up a 1047 this past spring and have been slowly getting it back to running condition.  Pretty much everything works now but the power steering. Does anyone know what this unit comes off?  Is it another Ford f600 component.  Its expensive to replace.  I've read on the cesna pump and need to verify a few things for the primary port.  Shimming is one possible fix.  I'd like to put a pressure gauge on the input line but the threads are hard to match up.  Is it tube thread?

What is the orientation if you do the autotie manually?  anyone have a overhead photo of a loaded second table?

Thanks

Rookie with a BHT-2

I just purchased and installed a BHT-2 on my Hesston 4590 yesterday.  Install went perfectly, sensors on the tension rails, calibrated fine with an empty bale chamber.

I have never used technology to test hay.  In alfalfa I use the twist test and fingernail scraping the epidermis.  When those tests were good I'd send a few through the baler and 'feel' the bales for weight and moisture.  Similar process in the grass hays.

I started on a piece of alfalfa.  The meter was anywhere from 15 to 22%.  The bales felt nice but showed some green stems, not heavy.  For a reality check, a friend probes a few with his brand new just purchased New Holland handheld probe and all were above 18%, some showing as high as 28%.  You could probe the same bale 6 times and get 6 different readings often with just as high of a spread.

Next I moved to some alfalfa/orchard mix and the BHT-2 was pretty consistently below 14% with an occasional blip to 16.5-17%.  The New Holland handheld probed these bales in the 20's just about everywhere, again with some extremes near 30%.  Experience told me the bales felt perfect and I would have slept just fine with them in my hay mow.

Without moisture technology, I would have baled and been happy with the hay.  With the technology, I was confused and concerned.  For those who have been running meters from some time, how do you make decisions when the meter jumps up and down 10% from one part of windrow to the next.  And do you trust the advanced metering of the BHT-2, or the 2 inch sensor on the end of a probe more?

RTV-x900, about to pull the pin

samedi 26 août 2017

I currently own a L2501 and LOVE IT!!!! Been looking for a UTV and I have settled on a RTV-x900, camo, I am glad I found this forum.

I live in a hilly part of central KY and need this to get down into the creek bottoms for deer season and fire wood. Not expecting miracles, just dependability. Have asked several local farmers which the would use and why and MOST of them recommend the Kubota over any other, second place is tied between JD Gator and KZ Mules.

Very curious about mods and performance enhancer tips from y'all.

Thanks and I look forward to doing research on here.

NH 326 baler inconsistent bales

I bought a NH 326 baler for baling grass hay last year. I struggled with it last year trying to get straight bales and wasn't successful. I went through the baler this spring and found two broken hay dogs and no hay dog stops. I replaced the broken dogs, all 6 stops and springs. I double checked the timing and went through everything with the manual. I've finally got it making straight bales, and usually nice solid brick bales, but about 20% of the bales are coming out with a curl on the end. I've attached pictures of two curled bales including an extreme example, as well as a nice solid bale. I'm stumped as to what is casing these curled bales. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Feeding calf's

My 2 calf's are 3&4 months old, both are off milk and have been eating bag starter feed very good for 2 months now...

Question ....

I bought 13% grower mix from CPC Carolina, can I feed them too much of this ??

On a side note this mix is so much better priced compared to store bought bag feed, smells like fermented cow feed should and @ 160$ for a 1600lb sack I can afford to feed them as much as they want...

They are pined in a lot with free choice hay & water, I don't have a creep feeder, I cut a barrel in half and have been dumping 3/4 of a  5gl bucket in it every day, they always eat it all... can I feed them too much of will they only eat as much as they want??

They are looking very good and gaining weight, even starting to look fat, their poop looks normal, and they drink plenty of water, I just don't want to rush things and make them sick...

I'll post some pics of them later..

Thanks, Chris

Our experiment in the alfalfa field proved out good. The alfalfa was kinda weak so we drilled in @30 lbs acre a BMR (brown mid-rib) sudan/sorgum hybrid. Mixed Grass, Foxtail and Horse Nettle Reality Check

jeudi 24 août 2017

I've got a field of Timothy mixed grass. Walking it today, there are some patches of foxtail and a few pieces of horse nettle.

At what point do you disqualify your hay for horse consumption due to the presence of foxtail and horse nettle? How much of it is to much?

There is some decent grass in is this field, along with some stemmy purple top coming up. It is otherwise weed free. I hate to just bush hog it down. Maybe cow hay? Goats? Can they tolerate that stuff?

What's your limit on baling squares where there is potential for foxtail and a bit of horse nettle? If anyone has a pic they could post of a field "over-run" with foxtail, I'd like to see it for reference.

Thanks!
Bill

PS - this post is on multiple forums for a broad audience - thx!

Front axle seep

Hi fellow members,

I own a BX-22330. The front axle is seeping ( just wet spots, not puddles ) on the rear side of the pivot pin. I have removed the pin , o,rings , plastic o,ring backup. They all looked good so reinstalled and took all play out of pin by adjusting the nut, also replaced the hydro fluid with 80-90 gear oil. Still seeps.

Has anyone had to replace o,rings with new? Has anyone had this problem?

Kubota zero turn mowers.

So I'm kicking around the idea of buying a Kubota zero turn mower.   Probably their Z100 Kommander series since I'm cheap with regard to mowers.   I like their ones that can take diesel.   I just don't  like the price attached to those ones.   Kubota has good financing terms right now.  Which normally I wouldn't consider, but these seem fair.   I found an old thread about them on here, but it had more to do with Kubota motors in other mowers.   Anyone have any experience with them?   The reason I like them over the brands sold at Lowes, Tractor Supply and such is that they seem to be better built and they are sold at an actual Kubota dealership that can service them if needed.   But my one question.   How good are they at cutting weeds and tougher grasses?  No replacement of a bushhog I'm sure, but I would be interested in it so I could do more weedcutting without having to hook up the bush hog.      That's more what I'm wondering about rather then lawn cutting.   I currently have a Craftsman riding lawnmower that is good.   My dad has one also that outright died yesterday.   It was old and not doing well anyways.   So if I bought the Kubota I would give my mower to him.   My excuse to my wife is this Kubota would be good training for my 10 year son to get him ready for the giant zero turn mower that cuts hay.  LOL.

Managing RTV Refueling

After putting about 10 hours and 50 miles on our X-1120, it was ready for some fuel. I've been told never to run the tank dry and that its probably a good idea to fill it up when it gets below a half-tank. It was just a touch below half-tank.

So I ordered a plastic container (yellow) from Amazon and thought I had avoided those contraptions with valves that always seem to break. But it turns out, it has some crazy switch where you have to arm the valve and press a lip against the neck of the tank. And once your docking maneuver is complete, there is no air vent so the vacuum does not let the fuel flow like it should. No kiddin, this is a real acrobatic feat. And when you have a bad shoulder, its just way tougher than it has to be.

Please tell me there is a solution that you have all found that makes re-fueling the RTV a non-event. Tell me the government hasn't take over this facet of our lives as well.

I am going to put some icy hot on my shoulder and stew about this for awhile.

Yet Another repair to my BR7060!!!!

Just when I thought I would hit a stretch of calm, my BR7060's problems returned again.
Today, under bright, sunny commonwealth of PA, post-eclipse skies at about 2PM, I raked up a 10 acre field and prepared to bale at 3PM. On bale 5 I got the dreaded "ERROR" and that nasty beeping alarm.
Bale was wrapped, but net uncut. Wouldn't return to home position. Got out and looked for anything I could find that looked abnormal, then I found it. The actuator cylinder let go right at the end where the bolt passes through.
Looked like metal fatigue.

I think the whole damn baler has "fatigue".
4,600 bales on it and it seems like lots of repairs you'd see on a baler with 15,000 bales.
I installed a reman actuator. Looks like its ~$700. Parts department said they sell maybe 2 of them a year.
I was back in business by 6PM and because I baled late, I made a bunch of higher moisture than desired round bales. :(
I think I crossed the $4,000 in repairs threshold today on my 4yr old BR7060.

Is this normal? Am I expecting too much in terms of reliability?

I've got a 1375 Massey discbine and the shaft that runs under the tongue, one of the bearing failed and wore a groove in the shaft. What can I do to build it back up. I'll try and figure out how to throw a picture up. Thanks in advance.

Brillion seeder... is it worth it?

I have about 70ac to seed this fall. 20ac for alfalfa/orchard mix and 10ac for straight Timothy. The other 40ac will be put into permanent horse pasture.

Those acres have been prepped with disc and cultimulcher. I finished the cultimulching last night and quite honestly, I'm impressed in how good the field looks. I had annual rye on it for the summer, just to hold soil and keep weeds down. I mowed it as low as my batwing would go before I disked it. I disked on the bias to the initial rye then 90deg opposite to the disc with the cultimulcher. I have approximately 95% dirt with only a very little stubble on the surface. Its smooth... its ready, the seed is in the barn. I am limited to farm work on Weekends, Mondays, and vacations.

But I have yet to make up my mind concerning a way to get it in the ground.

I have 3 options...

1. The local Extension office has a 10' Haybuster, which I used to put in the rye. I'm a little worried about its consistency on depth of planting, especially given it is a rental. (This is the least expensive option and I would plant half density in 2 directions.) This would be the least expensive of all options. But, being that it is used by everyone in the area, it can be difficult to get when I have the time.

2. Relatively local Used Farm Equipment dealer has a 10' Brillion seeder... no idea about the year. It looks to be in relatively decent shape, but when looking at it from the back, it appears to angle a bit. I've seen it up close, and its been 'used' but not necessarily abused. I'd take another close look before I purchased it if I went this route. I could get this for about 30% of new.

http://ift.tt/2xadgb0 and Caddies;page=1;items=20;sort=0;wid=1;disposition=any&fsuid=2c31a678-6b33-4088-8626-60e9a31ca272

3. There is a relatively 'new/used' machine about 4years old, but only rented for one year a handful of times. I could get this for about 75% of new.

My goal is quality hay for my horses and, if any is left over, to sell in the area.

There are plenty of horses so, if I can get the quality, I should be able to sell it well. (Lexington, KY area). But my main goal is a good stand that I don't have to fight all the time. BUT... I won't be planting year in and year out. I figure any of the options will work, but which would work best for the next 20yrs? Would purchasing the 'new' seeder be worthwhile when only using it occasionally but getting a great stand when I do? Would the older one suffice in this instance? Or should I just go with 2 90deg runs of the no-till? Seed is expensive, and I don't want to be foolish in any direction, if there is a chance to prevent it.

Timothy Reproduction?????

Other than seed falling off the seed head and repopulating, can anyone explain how Timothy reproduces more Timothy? You got a bare spot in the Timothy stand, with no rhizomes, how does Timothy naturally spread into those areas - other than via seed?

I gather Timothy can be competitive. Is this via shading out the neighboring plant or somehow growing into it's space and crowding it out?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Bill

cover edge net in older balers?

This has probably been discussed here and I just cant find it. Has anyone ever tried to run 54'' net in a 48'' baler? I haven't measured my 654 net dispenser but I think it will hold it. I wonder if this has been tried? My good friend has a Vermeer and he was going to save me a little dab on the end of a roll to see if it will work or not. Just curious

Water Bugs in Alfalfa??

dimanche 20 août 2017

I found a black bug that looks like a larger version of a blister beetle in our Colorado or AZ alfalfa tonight. I called my hay guy who said they had seen them but they're Water Bugs. The hay is super rich some of my horses aren't finishing it. I can't find ANY information on Water Bugs on water Bugs in Alfalfa online anywhere. Can anyone help me out? No one is sick but I'm fretting.

Kuhns tie grabbers

Just about ready to take the plunge on a Kuhn's accumulator setup, and was wondering what the general consensus was on getting a tie grabber to round out the suite? I'm planning on going for the 1234F behind my Hesston inline, and stack with an S250 Bobcat in the barn.

Those that have the tie grabber, do you find it was worth the additional 5k or so? Do you find that the tied bundles are solid enough as-is on wagons without any further restraint going along bumpy lanes and out on the road? Admittedly, there's only about 1/2 a mile from any of my hay fields to the hay barn.

Those that just run the regular grapple, same question? Do you get enough stability just offsetting along the back rack of your wagon?

Bonus question: What size wagons are you using?

Thanks in advance!

New RTV-X1100C

Hello all. New to this forum. Glad I found it.

I'm getting ready to buy a new RTV1100. I always had Polaris ATV's and my 2004 and 2009's were bulletproof. So I just bought a new Sportsman 570 power steering. It has been a nightmare. bad build quality and lots off issues with it and the dealer. Final straw was having to pay a $56 deductible to use the warranty on it at 25 hours old. I contacted Polaris directly and was pretty much told "sorry about your luck."

Anyway, decided I can use a workhorse more than atv's to accompany my B2620 tractor. I test drove a new RTV and climbed some pretty steep hills after hearing some say they were gutless. It did everything I need it to do no problem at all.

Anyway, I'm trying to decide between the Kubota and a Boss vee plow.
Can anyone give me opinions between these two? Thanks.

Acid spray volume

I make small mini round bales 27" X 22". I just made a spray system for my mini round bales. In understanding how much spray to apply in front of the windrow pickup. To achieve 8 lbs. to the ton, I need to be spraying approximately 1 quart every 15 minutes if I am baling 1 Ton per hour. This would be a fine mist spray nozzle to accomplish this. Am I on the right track here?

Heavy dew vs rain

Here lately we've been having heavy dew in the mornings. Heavy enough that it won't completely dry off until almost noon some days. Wouldn't this be similar to a slow rain or heavy mist during the night? Is this something people take into consideration when buying? Or is saying this hay was never rained on kinda like calling a mutt a dog? Just wandering.

Rake and Bale in Same Trip with Flexrake

Always trying to improve

New to HayTalk, although I've been reading for quite some time. I am always looking for knowledge and ways to improve the efficiency of my operation, as I did not grow up farming.
I square bale about 60 acres of mixed grass hay in Middle Tennessee for my own show horses. Every other year or so I rent a haybuster from the local Co-op and drill ~8 lbs/ac of Persist Orchardgrass, sometimes add some KY31, and sometimes add some Timothy. Every other fall I lime a ton per acre, every March I spray either 2-4D or GrazeOn Next, and every April I fertilize with 60-60-60. I always run a few soil samples, but am always suggested the same thing at the Co-op.
The weather in middle TN is such that we get one good cool season cutting, and then it gets too hot, so the Orchard, Fescue, and Timothy stop growing, and in my case Johnsongrass and Dallisgrass take over. Following my 2nd cutting, I usually spray an ounce per acre of Outrider to try and control the Johnson grass, but if I miss a year, it comes back twice as strong. Also, I don't like feeding hay that has been sprayed with herbicide, and it seems to be stunting my stand of Orchard.
I don't know anything about growing alfalfa, but worry about blister beetles and the risk or horses consuming them. I have been told grasses like Bermuda or Teff raise the risk of impaction in horses' gut.
I am looking for any suggestions or information on improving my operation in any way!
Thanks so much in advance for all of your help.

Is it cheaper to raise or buy hay?

I have read that it is cheaper to buy hay than raise it on several threads over the years and read it again today. This got me thinking. We have been selling hay since 1989 and have done well with it. I am also assuming that others on here are profitable too. So my thought would be that if. I am making profit, then I can't buy it cheaper. But if somebody is willing to sell at a loss or doesn't know their costs and sells cheap, then maybe I can buy it cheaper than raising it. I don't know, just thought it would make an interesting haytalk conversation.

Grass/Clover field and Wabbits

Helping a friend out mowing grass field. After I mowed, I knocked off loose hay from mower, top to bottom. Reached under the mower to grab more hay got a handful of fur. I could not see what I grabbed so I crawled up underneath of mower to find out what it was...baby rabbit. Not sure how long the stowaway was with me or if its brother or sister is laying in the hay. Guess I'll find out tomorrow when the hay gets ted.

Does this kill the next grow

Hey everyone I work at State park that has roughly 500 acres of hay fields.  Things are changing and the cutting is now falling on me to do.  I am trying to figure out a few things:

If I cut tall grass with a sickle bar or a disc mower but do not go back to rake or bale will the grass underneath die off?  Is there a disc mower or sickle bar that can move like a ditch bank mower?  I'm trying to figure out if I can more ditches and steep banks, leave the long non-shredded grass and not kill the grass below it?  Is this why I would be better off with a Flail or rotary mower, it cuts the grass smaller so it doesn't mold and kill the next grow?  Can anyone recommend a good cutting attachment and mower?

Thank you!

The repo guys seemed to have missed the bale baron when they visited the fellows farm but they found the grapple for handling the bundles.  Picked it up at the local auction for cheaper than I could buy the tines.

What to seed?

In the spring of '15 I seeded a field into pasture using a brillion seeder with the following mix:

Foregrazer V Alfalfa 20% Spring Green Festuolium 20 Fleet Meadow Bromegrass 15 Tetra-Gain Perennial Ryegrass 10 Annual Ryegrass 10 Milkway Fescue Blend 10 Climax Timothy 10 Birdsfoot Trefoil 2.5 Alice White Clover 2.5

Parts of the field ended up way too alfalfa heavy.  I spoke with a Brillion guy and he said because it was a premix the small stuff filters to the bottom with every little bump you go over.  Even during transport still in the bag it can greatly separate.

I rotationally graze and finish hereford beef cattle - moving the cattle every other day. This fall I would like to drill in some more grass to thicken it up and also continue to thin out the alfalfa.

Any suggestions on what grass to add to this mix?

Will no-till drilling work?

Fall Weed Seed Germination

Winter annuals - when do they typically germinate and begin growing, i.e. August, September, etc.

One grassy weed I'd like to eradicate in one of my fields is sweet vernal grass.  Seems like I read that it actually germinates in the fall????  I don't know much about the life cycle of this weed, but while - an annual, if it starts growing in the fall, it would be great if/when I hit the field with round-up, I could zap it too.

Other broadleaf weeds - when do you typically start seeing them?  Planning some fall broadleaf herbicide spraying and want the timing right.

Thanks,

2017 X1140 mods

I'm new here and seems to be a great place for info. I ordered a new x1140 from my local dealer this week. And i'm looking for so info. I will be using the rtv for plowing and off road driving to the camp and our local atv trails/logging rds. I usually never am the one to leave anything stock to a degree. And managed to order the lift kit and rear covers for the transmission/receiver. I know they max out around 25mph is there any way present owners are increasing the top end? I also plan on having bigger tires on the unit. I have some luck on my side as we recently hired here at work hired a local Kubota technician. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well the front runner is a Burlington Northern Train Engine #8170 pulling assisting two Amtrak Engines. You don’t see this often mostly only in the winter months. Is 22,000 bales a lot for a baler?

Looking at a used New Holland 650 Fastnet with bale commander.  It has just over 22k bales on it.  I haven't actually seen it in person yet but it looks clean and well maintained in the pictures.  I've read up on the baler a bit.  Seems it's got good reviews with a few quirks (like almost any piece of machinery seems to have).  I'm only going to be doing 50 to 100 acres per year so spending $20,000 on a baler doesn't make sense but at the same time I don't want to spend $6000 on a piece of junk that is worn out and going to break down all the time.

Thanks

Dave

Trouble making it up a hill.

Looking for ideas on how to fix this hill. It's a tad steep but I have others that are the same angle.

The problem is about halfway up the hill is rock, so jagged edge of the rock juts out. The RTV hangs on these as the wheel spins. With multiple ATV's I can make it up the hill no problem.

My idea was to take a sledge hammer and bash the rocks so they are not jutting edges so the wheel will go over them. I could not bust the rodk.

I added gravel hoping to level it all out ....that didn't help, the gravel soon worked away ...RTV never made it up the hill.

Can't go out and around due to lay of land ....so I have to find a way to go through this obstacle.

Round baler belt surface texture

mardi 15 août 2017

Just curious, does any body know what the thinking is behind the various types of surface texture on round baler belts?  Deere has had the diamond pattern as long as I can remember, Vermeer has changed to mrt in recent history, CNH can't decide what it wants so the NH stickered machines get mrt and the CIH get chevron.

Sericea or AU Grazer Lespedeza Condensed Tannins

I have been trying to read up on condensed tannin (CT) forages such as sericea lespedeza. I think I would have a good market as well as personal use for it.

It seems that, in a lot of places (including some older threads from this site), sericea lespedeza is considered an invasive weed. Even seed sellers caution to check state laws concerning it prior to planting. It appears that there are more threads on here dealing with killing it more than growing it (The FBI refers to that as a "clue").

I have tried Birdsfoot trefoil in pasture (it is also a CT forage), but they aren't kidding when they say that it lacks seeding vigor!! It seems to only grow on the other side of the fence and around the field edges.

AU Grazer has been mentioned, in passing, a few times on this site (TimSouth IIRC), and I believe that it is a finer stemmed sericea lespedeza that is specifically bred for hay/forage? It understand that it has less CTs than "regular old" sericea?

It is my understanding that CT s do two things (one good; one bad)
1) reduce palatability
2) have the potential to help control anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal parasites.

I know that I have a customer or two that want me to grow it, but the “reduced palatability” which is associated with Tannins is more than a little concerning to me.

I'm looking at doing @10 acre patch in it, and I hate to have a flop.I am up in the air between AU Grazer or go back with the ladino that has been played out. (I don't think I have the PH high enough for alfalfa yet; will know for sure when soil samples results get here.)

If you recommend AU Grazer or sericea, do you grow it with a grass or as a pure stand?

Feedability?
Pros-cons?

ATV or UTV

Not sure if this is the place to put this subject or not. If not please let me know where it should be posted.

I had a 4 wheeler that I used for many chorses around the place until it was stolen.

Uses included:

1. spraying fields

2. spraying fence rows

3. dragging the driveway

4. dragging logs

5. exercising the dog for hunting season

6. pulling the custom spinning jenny for building fence

7. pulling wagon to clean stalls

8. pulling wagon to pick up brush

So I'm in the market for a replacement. The ATV was very handy and would go just about anywhere. I have an all terrain wagon that I used with it.

How many use an UTV now instead of an ATV?

Who has gone from an ATV to UTV that wish they would have stuck with an ATV?

Hay Market forecast

What would you do if you could glimpse the future of the alfalfa hay market? What if in 2008 you knew the market was going to crash, or at least had some idea it was coming? We personally lost a lot of money in 2008 and again in 2015. Which is why we implemented the same technology that has been used in the stock market since 1990. RTV 1140 followed me home. Lucky lucky lucky

Kudo's to Classified IFTTT http://ift.tt/2iWnPHJ

I set up a craigslist search for whenever an RTV was put up for sale in a dozen or so craiglsist sites in my general vicinity. Places I would travel to for the right deal.

So for the past year or so I get notifications. Some so so, some BS (like the one I posted about a month ago) and finally one that truly paid offf for me.

I got email notification about this ad 23 hours after it was posted.

http://ift.tt/2w84NYJ

I called and made arrangments to go eee ti this afternoon. Another guy was supposed to see it last night but was a no show. He showed up while I was looking and another was coming later. Man, I was shocked to hear that many looking but this was what I consider an exceptional deal.

a 2009 1140 in great shape, 1 owner, 862 hours for 8k. I offered 7700 and brought i home. Yippee.

I am amazed at how much smoother it runs and drives over my 06 RTV 900. It's quieter, smoother operation. No sudden stop when you let off the gas. Simply awesome all the way around.

Pics are in the ad but that will be pulled eventually so I'll add the same pics here that were taken by the fellow selling the RTV.

I'm still in shock. Can't wipe this smile off my face. :D

Spraying Alfalfa At Night

I may be needing to spray my alfalfa for bugs later this week.  My concern is that I have 2 new bee hives located about a 100 yds south of the alfalfa fields.  Alfalfa is not in bud stage and will not be in bud for another 10-12 days.  I was thinking about spraying around sunset while the bees are in the hive.  That would give the insecticide about 9 hrs on the field before the bees get active again the next morning.  Has anyone ever tried this?  If so, how were the results?

NH Discbine Problem

Dad was cutting today with our new (cut around 100 acres) H7220 and something broke between the drive disc and the other disc on the cutter bar. The drive disc (the one driven from the gear box) will turn when the PTO is engaged but the other disc will not. You can manually turn one of the other disc and all but the drive disc will turn. So, back to the dealer. At least it will be warranted. Fortunately the dealer still had the cutter I traded in and he let us use it to finish the field.

Still a bummer, I was proud to finally be running a conditioner.

My field of mixed grasses needs to be cut again or just mowed down. I don't need the hay and would have to pay someone to round bale it. I only do small squares.

With the forecast indicating the humidity levels above 50% and the chances of rain every 4 or 5 days I'm not sure it would get dry enough before the next rain.

I don't run chemicals although I am considering adding it for next year.

What options do I have? Can it be left alone until next spring?

Would mowing would leave a lot of thatch? What about mowing it multiple times?

Annual grass control in cool season grasses

lundi 14 août 2017

Are there any options for controlling annual warm season grasses in cool season perennials like orchard grass and smooth brome? I'm not aware of anything that is labeled to use but I might be overlooking something. Crabgrass and goosegrass are my two main problems. I'm having a pretty bad issue in one of my fields of smooth brome. Im hoping to move away from growing as much alfalfa and plant more grass this fall but I need to be able to find something that will control the annual grass weeds for that to be a viable option in most fields.

John Deere 250 skid steer

I got a friend that has a 250 JD skid steer 06-07 model I think. There s a light coming on that says "restricted filter". He put on a new filter and the light still comes on, cleaned the 2 small hydrostatic screens light still on. Whenever the oil warms up it has a occasional slight squeal to the loader hydraulics. What needs to be done next? Thanks in advance!!!

RTV900 electrical issue

Ok so my 06 rtv 900 is having some weird power issues. When you turn the key sometimes the dash lights come on and sometimes they dont. Battery is brand new within a couple months and test at 12.7v. I get 12v at starter also. The timer relay was making a buzzing noise when I turned the key off, whenever the gauges came on, so I just replaced that and nothing changed. I hooked up my tractor with jumper cables and it was doing the same thing, but after about 15 min and a few tries it cranked up. I let it run a little while and turned it off. tried to crank it again and nothing. Any ideas? Starter relay maybe?

White Mold in our alfalfa

Every year as the monsoon rains come we have a white mold show up in our alfalfa field. It starves the plant that then browns out but doesn't die. Treatment is ridiculously expensive. This year we lightly over seeded a BMR sorghum in the field. Our crop advisor droned the field, you can see the mold, you can't really tell it but the BMR is 2' tall and filled in the patch keeping our cattle feed tonnage OK. The mold goes away as we dry out.

Soybeans to annual rye to alfalfa... need recommendation on tillage option

First time poster on this board.

I purchased 84ac in Lexington KY area a year ago, and have been working on the land since. It has been soybeans/corn for quite a while, with a history of tobacco at some point. The last 2 years have been soybeans and this year I just put it into annual rye to hold the soil in place with intentions of putting it into permanent horse pasture and hay.

I have 20ac which I will be putting into alfalfa/orchard grass and 10 ac into straight Timothy. The rest of the farm will be put into Bluegrass/orchard/non-endophyte fescue for permanent pasture. The land has some mild hills, but overall, it does drop more than 10-20ft over the whole place.

I have a JD5100e (100hp)

I put in the annual rye with a 10' Haybuster no-till which worked very well, but the ground is a bit rough, not horrible, but I'd like to get it in as good of shape as possible prior to putting in hay.

I have access to a light 8' disc... which I had intended to work the ground up then cultimulch it (14' cultimulcher) However, the disc is so light, it just skims the top, and really doesn't cut enough to make it worthwhile or take out many of the bumps. So now I'm in a pickle.

Given I don't have a lot of time before seed needs to be in the ground and my ability to work is relegated to weekends and Mondays, I need to get something which will work this ground well. I really don't want to purchase it... because it will be a one time use until several years down the road, however it appears I have no options. So I am trying to decide what would work this field into the best shape in order to get the best stand I can.

I've thought about a field cultivator and there are 2 on auction this week. 14 and 15' one with sweeps the other with points. There is also a couple chisels around, but I haven't used a chisel in 30yrs, and don't know if my 100hp tractor can handle much of one or if it is even the right thing to use.

I still am unsure of whether I should purchase a Brillion seeder (12') to put in the stand. That, at least, I can see holding its value and being useful to me and my neighbors in the future. But I have access to No-till drills from my County Extension for much less cost.

I'm at a loss and feel like I'm behind the 8-ball. And I'd like your thoughts. Given my situation and limited budget and time... is there a piece of tillage equipment that you would recommend to smooth this place out so I can pull my cultimulcher and then plant? What would you do in my position? (I've even thought of just buying sweeps and putting them on the cultimulcher and using it as my tillage tool then pick them up and roll it down. But I haven't seen ANYONE talk about doing that before. The straight teeth are too far apart to use alone, I think I'd have to have sweeps to make any reasonable progress. I tried it in 2 directions and I had some pretty bad undisturbed ridging/diamonds which really didn't look like a good seedbed.)

5-6 time rained on hay

dimanche 13 août 2017

So at what point do you just bale hay to get it out of the field? I have alfalfa and grass that has been rained on several times the last two weeks. No day has allowed it to really cure. It was kinda close today after raking. Wasn't supposed to rain and now it's raining again. When we were raking it looked like the rakes were on fire with all the black dust coming off the hay. So at what point do you just bale and set it well away from anything else?

using acid on Alfalfa

Weather forecast went south after I cut 3rd cutting Alfalfa Saturday, tedded early this morning before dew was gone. I was partly to mostly cloudy  all day. They are calling for rain Monday night I have an acid applicator and a moisture tester in the bale chamber, What is the highest moisture % you can bale and the crop saver has worked well. If we juice the hay I plan to store it myself before I sell it.The book tells me 20% I have heard guys baling a 30% any help would be appreciated.

The 2017 Editions are Arriving.

Last November my herd sire decided he needed a case of foot rot. So I selected one of his sons to fill in. He was a black baldy out of a 14 year old Hereford cow that had never missed. I'm getting some good baldy calves. The bottom photo arrived 4 day ago.

Korean Hay

I work at a Korean Company here in Michigan "LG Chemical" we make car batteries for hybrid and electric cars.  Anyways on Friday I was having "tea" with the CFO who is a Korean national.  The Korean nationals can only work/stay in the country for 2 years before having to return to Korea.  Anyways his english is not the best but we were having casual conversation and he asked what I liked to do outside of work.  We eventually started to talk about horses and hay and whatnot.

He told me that in Korea they harvest the wheat and then the "straw" and they mix the straw with something and they feed that to animals.  He didn't explain it that great but I thought that was interesting. He said they do that because they don't have a lot of land to grow grass hay.  Any idea what they mix straw with?

Wrapping cornstalks for stalklage??

samedi 12 août 2017

Anyone do this?Pretty sure Mlappin and IAHaymaker do.Just wondering how well it works and the moistures it even works at.I know wetter the better after combining but wondering if stalks are getting drier how well it would work,or how dry can it be where you wouldn't do it.

I'm thinking he should be chasing the combine with the balers.
