NH sledge pivot wear

mercredi 9 août 2017

In rebuilding my 644 sledge, I have discovered what seems like a lot of wear in the pivots. While the grease zerks have always taken grease, most of the grease always pushed right out at the top of the pivot instead of traveling around the pivot in the track. After wire wheeling all of the surfaces, it's apparent that the track was not plugged but that there is enough wear that the grease had been escaping at the top. I could replace the pivots (and I still may) but I assume some of the wear is in the baler frame and that isn't getting replaced or bored. I think what I have now would still function IF I could find a way to lube them better. I have considered adding a zerk on the inside of the left side pivot that would apply grease at the bottom instead of the current grease point at the top. I think this is simple and viable but it unfortunately won't work on the right as the bearing flange covers the entire inside of the pivot. I'm thinking about trying to add a zerk through the frame into the bottom of the pivot hole. Looks possible but not fun. Anyone ever encounter a similar situation and how have you handled it? Thanks.
