Ph meter = junk?

Has anyone tried one of these? I wanted to check the ph on some ground i just acquired to assess how much lime ill need and for whatever reason none of the farm stores close here have the disposable strip type tests. My options were buy this dumb thing from menards or have the local coop send soil samples off to be tested which costs $30 per test and takes 2-3 weeks (im a lot more worried about the time then the $$$). Has anyone had one of these actually work? The instructions said to take a sample to test as opposed to sticking the thing in the ground, so thats what i did and the needle doesnt even move.
