2006 RTV900 dump bed not working
I've been searching through the forum for a similar issue to mine without luck thus far, but I have learned a lot about these machines and feel a lot better after reading through this forum. I recently bought a 2006 rtv 900 from a friend and knew the dump bed was not working. I didn't think it was a big deal because I didn't know if I'd be using the bed for dumping anyway. Boy was I wrong!!! When raising or lowering the lever there is no sound or load on the engine whatsoever. Its like no power is getting to the pump at all. I've checked the connections and everything seems to be in the right spot. Is there a fuse for the dump bed alone? The transmission seems to be fine and the fluid levels check out okay too.
Any ideas?

V-Raking Field Patterns
I now have a v-rake for the first time and am looking for suggestions on raking patterns in the field. I know there's a lot of different opinions out there, and that's what I'm looking for. So let me start with explaining my conditions:
- All of my hay is 100% grass. Mostly Timothy and Orchard.
- I cut everything roundy-round with my side pull disc mower, but I use a tedder on everything, leaving the hay completely spread out with no distinguishable windrows.
- My new rake (new to me that is) is a 10 wheel (with center kicker wheel) Frontier WR1212 standard capacity.
- Most of my fields are under 20 acres (except for one that's 40 acres) and have at least one straight long side.
- I bale all small squares (NH 5070).
- I typically am raking and baling each field simultaneously.
- Everything is picked up with a New Holland bale wagon.
I've got some ideas, but am just stumped on what the best field pattern will be for me. what are you're suggestions?

Ford 7810
I finally did it, broke down and added a new/used tractor to my now 2 tractor fleet for a small hay operation. I've been looking at the Ford 7810 now for a couple of years. I just like the look plus I already have a 4610 FWD so i figure they would be similar plus I would just feel weird adding another color now.
I'm just wondering if any of you old pros have any experience with the 7810? It doesn't have a loader but I would like to add one. I noticed Tractordata.com doesn't list a loader for it so i'm trying to figure out which loaders will work. Also looking on TD it list it at around 90 hp which seems to be the PTO. After a little internet research it seems the 6.6l 401ci is actually 160 hp, just wondering if anyone could verify that? I guess my next step will be to buy the 10 series manuals for around 250 bucks online, unless the seller can find them. Any info, opinions, experience or personal history with a Ford 7810 would be appreciated.
Also I'm looking at a big round bailer for my operation. I'm thinking about a CLAAS. What's your opinion.
Thanks,
Mississippi.

Small Square Hay Bale Dimensions/Size
Hi everyone,
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard that the width and height are pretty much always the same and this depends on the baler being used. And the length varies based on whatever the operator of the baler wants? So if that's the case, what are the most common small square hay bale dimensions made and sold (Length x Width x Height). Preferably, most common square bale dimensions below 50"L x 30"W x 30"H. Thank you for your time.

Sprayer Solenoid Internal Corrosion
dimanche 26 février 2017
I'm hoping someone has a quick fix for internal corrosion/rusting on sprayer solenoids. The problem:
My sprayer has four solenoids. One controls flow to a cluster nozzle. The other three provide individual shutoff for the right, center, and left spray booms. After each use of the sprayer, the magnetic internal parts of these solenoids rust/corrode and will lock up, requiring me to disassemble each solenoid, dry the internal parts, and remove the rust/corrosion using emery cloth. I've now begun to disassemble and dry each solenoid after each spraying job and spraying these internal parts with WD 40 during the reassembly process.
Is there a simple solution to this rust/corrosion problem that will make it unnecessary to disassemble these solenoids after each spray job.

Pro's & con's of not taking first cut Fescue
samedi 25 février 2017
Due to unforeseen circumstances I may not be able to spread much if any fertilizer this spring.
I have a lot of hay in the barn from last year, both first & second cuttings, enough to feed all summer & then some.
We are expecting more of the same drought as last summer so I am considering not cutting my Fescue, let the seed dry out then early fall bush hog the seed tops off and then take a cut leaving a high stubble..
I'd like to know the good & bad with this idea.
Thanks

I have been looking to buy this ripper for the past year or so but just didn't want to spent the money. Dealer was asking $28,500 last year. This unit is all but new, very little use. I saw the dealer had marked the price down to $22,000 and had it in their bargin section where it would be reduced each week until sold. I called and made them a low offer and we ended up buying it

A very big thank you and farewell....
I would like to thank so many of you who over the last couple of years have gotten in touch with me to ask questions about the seed business, and specific genetics. Many have even made an investment with me, and the company I represent. At this time however, I have decided to make a transition away from the seed industry. This was a very difficult move for me due to the outstanding company I had the privilege of representing, and the many, many relationships that I have been able to form.
This is an opportunity that I just could not pass on though, as I am now transitioning into my new role as Technical Nutrient Advisor for Rock River Laboratory. I am excited to learn and continue to grow and cultivate my network. I look forward to continuing my relationships with many of you.

Anybody still run @ 540? Why - why not?
I hardly ever rake or tedd @ 540 anymore. Only in really heavy, wet hay. Usually right after mowing.
Baled with the JD 458 round baler @ 540 this past season. Reading here that it may not be the best way to put hay up with a round baler.
After seeing all the leaf chaff in the round baler chamber with 2nd cut hay.. I'm thinking about slowing the "spin cycle" down a notch.
What do you all do? Thanks.

unexpected experiment
Last fall I did an unexpected experiment in dry down on my hay. On my Kuhn discbine on the bottom conditioner roll I spun a bearing and wrecked the shaft. It was a tuff season last year with all the rain and of course this happened when we had a week of sunny weather. So I didn't have time to fix things properly. So I just took the bottom roll out and ran with out a conditioner to at least get some haying done.
What I noticed is it didn't make much difference in dry down. I did take the swath forming shields off my discbine the year before and lay a wide swath. Its about 9 feet wide out of a 10 foot cut and really cuts down on the drying. What I found was that before I raked the hay that was not conditioned ,was not quite as dry as the conditioned hay at the same time since cutting. But I could make up for this by still raking with my rotary rake at the same time. The rake on the non conditioned hay would always make a taller, wider, fluffier swath that would not start to settle near as fast as the conditioned hay(or settle hardly at all). Without all the crimps in the hay the stems were stiffer and held things up better. So after raking my dry down was pretty much the same on the same hay with or with out conditioning.
It was an interesting result from an unplanned experiment. As long as I always raked when the stems were starting to become stiff instead of limp when they are just a bit too wet yet. I ended up finishing the season without the rolls in the discbine. I cut anything from fine grass(which the rolls don't make much difference on anyways). To courser grass, to fields with half alfalfa second cut hay. I could still make dry hay 36-48 hours after cutting depending on the day just like I could with the conditioner rolls in the machine. Now it has me thinking weather I need the conditioner or not.

Sudangrass Hay Advice
Looking to get the most $/acre out of some hay ground that I have leased. This is in KY.
Right now planning to cut fescue mid-May then till that ground and put 30-40 lbs/a of sudangrass and a little shot of nitrogen. Want to try to mow it under 3 feet to make it easier to dry down and just better quality hay. Planning on applying around 30 units of nitrogen after each cutting and hope to get 3 cuttings like this if I can get it in the ground by May 20th and wrap up final cutting around end of August.
My questions are how tough will it be to get to dry down to bale for hay in my area even though I'm mowing it earlier than most? Will be in big squares and will use HayGuard on it. Does 3 cuttings over this time period sound feasible, and what kind of tonnage per acre would you expect in this situation?
This hay will end up in a dry cow ration, do you think there will be any problems putting it in a mixer wagon or will it be similar to fescue?
Thanks.

Grazon P+D (Generic) - What is not to like????
Looking over other herbicides and while there is GrazonNext, there is or was Grazon P+D - which there are now generic versions. I guess the patents ran out on Grazon P+D.
What I don't see is any label restriction (as with GrazonNext and other herbicides with residuals) that hay cannot be taken off the property for 18 months. P+D has residuals, I think, as I read about it and with respect to the label - just not a restriction for moving hay off the farm for a given time period, which is good for us as we sell our hay.
Some reading on the internet indicated to me that P+D can cause a multi-year (maybe up to 3 years) seed suppression. Bad if you are replanting or perhaps over seeding, but maybe good if you are trying to keep summer annuals under control in your hay.
Aside from having a license to apply the stuff, what is the downside to using the generic version of Grazon P+D ? What do you like about this herbicide?
Just looking for more non-residual herbicides to add to our rotation - this one is on the radar.
Thanks,
Bill

Testing Seed
Spring is a comin and I wanted to test my hay seed for germination. This seed (Timothy Orchard Brome) is 3 years old and been stored in my barn on pallets. This is not temperature regulated and we got to minus 30 c for like 20 days this winter. I couldn't believe my results. 90% Germination still with 3 year old seed stored like a typical poor farmer haha. Damp paper towel rolled up with seed inside. Then placed in ziplock bag for 5 days. Any how just curious how you guys store your seed if your shop isn't heated. Also how many years after production can you get germination?

What is Your Spring Spraying Regimen?
Grass hay here - mostly timothy and a new field recovered with it's native mixed grass.
Since I don't use chemicals with residuals, I've been thinking about spraying twice. Early with 2,4-d ester or Weedmaster and later with Pasturegard. They would be spaced apart and sprayed such that the timing wouldn't preclude cutting the hay when it's ready.
Obviously the goal of spraying is to kill down weeds, but to also take advantage of any pre-emergent qualities of the herbicide to suppress summer annuals to the extent possible for a clean first cut.
You folks spray one and done or more than once?
What is your spring spraying regimen?

AGCO pushes for square baler classifications
Looks like AGCO is pushing to make the industry start classifying square balers (large and small), much like is done with combines. However, instead of using horsepower to rank a baler, it'd be done by comparing the max rated plunger load (the force used to compress the bale).
Most other manufacturers have been using a percent based load value in their software, but AGCO has been using arbitrary numbers. Turns out they've actually been using a unit all along, kiloNewtons, just never published that was the case. For example, I know you can set their XD to 465 which would equate to just north of 52 tons of force.
It'll be real interesting to see if the other manufacturers follow suite (maybe not make those units as settings on their software, but at least publish the max rated value) as it'd finally give something a little more concrete to compare against rather than vague bale weights or comparing density gains over other balers in their lineups. Even then, I'm sure it's much like combines where even if you compare the horse power, you still don't have a complete view of what the machine can do.

Talk Me Out of a NH 565 Square Baler
Hi guys! I know someone who wants to sell me their 565 New Holland, that I'm hoping to do some custom baling with this year should everything happen to work out.
Can anyone school me on this baler? It'll be my first, although I've worked around similar models before. What should I look at when I go see it? They told me they'd disassemble a round bale and feed it through to prove the machine functions...
Any idea what it might be worth? I think its cheap for this area based on ones I've seen on craigslist (its $4000) but its been barn kept and (so they say) well taken care of. Its a twine tie machine.
What should I know about it?
On a side note - anyone know what size rims this machine uses? I want to order a spare for each side, because they'll be good to have for the (2 hour drive) trip home behind my truck, and I'll also want them stashed somewhere as I plan to take this machine on the road quite a bit if I buy it...
Thank you everyone!

The Case of the Missing Hay Buyer
Our hay business is located in the Midwest and as most know, we have had an unusually mild winter, at least up to this date. Our hay sales have been really down and especially with our small squares. I have had customers come and get a few bales and then tell me that they are putting their animals back on the pastures. I don't see how that is going to be good on those pastures come spring and into summer. If we have a drought, as some forecasters are predicting, they are going to be crying for hay sooner than later. Other producers are also stating that their sales are flat. The big question we have is, where are they getting their hay? Are the buyers feeding alternative feeds for their animals? Did a lot of folks just get rid of their livestock? Its almost like a mystery--the case of the missing hay buyer. The hay auctions and craigslist also reflect this downward trend in hay prices as well. I am sure some producers may just throw in the towel this year because there isn't much profit in hay these days. Perhaps this is a trend in the Midwest and not other places. Inquiring minds want to know....

Anyone use a JCB Teletruk?
Came across this while looking at telehandlers, and it appears that it would be an ideal machine for the handling of hay in small barns and also for the loading of semi trailers. They have a 6-7000 pound capacity and something like a 15.5' lift height and are available with 4wd. They have the reach of a telehandler and the maneuverability of a forklift without a mast that sticks up above the attachment.

Changing to wide belts, Vermeer 605C
I have a Vermeer 605C. Its all I am going to have for several years. It works and its paid for.
My belts are all smooth. I assume new belts with texture will work better, right?
All of my belts are very much short, limiting my bale size a lot. I want to replace some belts, and splice the remainder to the right size. I was thinking replace the outer 4 4" belts with two 10" belts, and a new center belt.
Any tips for cutting out the belt guides smoothly? I was thinking sawzall to cut the bar, and angle grinder smooth. I might be able to get a belt sander in there. Anything I am missing?
I might have to make a tailgate holder-upper to safely get inside.
Tips? Besides a newer baler. In good hay and good conditions, this baler has worked for me. For feeding only a few animals, I am not buying a different baler. I want full size bales, and the best operating I can get from the old technology.
Thanks

Raking and custom pricing

I rake very little hay, mainly if it gets rained on. I have a New Holland swather and lay down a 5.5' windrow. I tend to find that the hay will dry just as quick laying in a wider windrow as it would raking it and turning it over. Furthermore the bottom of the windrow is dry(14-16%) and has full green color and is not sun bleached. Forage testing also is a better quality not being bleached in both sides.

Small wrapped bales gone mouldy.
A customer of mine who also buys from another supplier has called me for some advice. She bought about 40 small, wrapped bales from someone else which have gone mouldy.
The bales were made in early December (beginning of our hay season here) and stored off the ground in a ventilated shed through our summer.
Opening them now (Feb) she is finding they have white mould in them.
She has called me for advice because the person she bought them from has refused to provide a refund and says they have gone mouldy because they were stored in a shed rather than outside.
Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

Cow finishing question
I usually use visual markers and time to tell me when my cows are ready for butcher. Time being just as important because butcher too early is just a waste of an animal that could fill out more in time.
This article pretty much describes my process exactly, all the way up to the measurement part. I had never done that before. I have the time and energy to coddle them to fatten them up, but rely primarily on grass, and about a quart of sweet feed per day over the winter. Plus, I usually stick with young heifers. No bulls or steers.
So my question is, since the article pretty much describes my methods, how much validity do you give to the tape measure method of determining if they are finished? We had planned on butchering a polled Hereford heifer in late spring so I did the tape measure trick (as best I could) and she seems to be 54-56 inches to the top of the hip bone. So according to the article, she's ready.
Does this article seem legit to you? If so, I will save back the chart in my notes for further reference.

Caterpillar CAT 242B Hydraulic Interlock and Battery Drain
I was helping a guy try to diagnose a battery drain on his Cat 242B skid steer last night. It just started doing this since on some of the colder days we've been having. I've isolated the problem to the hydraulic interlock system, but I can't determine if the behavior is normal. Was curious if anyone else was familiar with this, or has this machine or a similar Cat skid loader that would be able to check functionality.
What I found was that the door microswitch was a little bit sticky, and I suspect it was not releasing when the door was opened after the machine was shut down. I cleaned the lubed the switch, and he is now aware of what causes the drain, and I will replace the microswitch if it continues to be an issue.
My question is whether the observed behavior is normal. It goes like this:
1. Enter machine, lower safety bar and start engine. Hydraulic interlock light is lit.
2. Close cab door. Hydraulic interlock light goes out.
3. Operate machine.
4. Turn off machine. Alternator/Battery light flickers dimly.
5. Open cab door, door switch opens and the alternator/battery light goes out. Zero amp draw.
If you reverse the last two steps and open the cab door first, and then turn off the machine, the light goes out as well. So basically as long as the switch works, he shouldn't have an issue. I'm having trouble understanding what the connection is between the two. I can't think of a reason to keep the interlock circuit powered once the machine is shut down.
Here is a schematic of the interlock circuit and the flickering light.

Johne's disease
We have recently been getting a education on Johne's disease. We had one of my uncles bulls that was not gaining weight, and was having diarrhea. We took him into the vet last week, and has been diagnosed with this disease. It takes two years from the time the animal was infected to the time that they start showing signs of the disease. According to our vet they pick it up from eating grass or hay that has been crapped on. In my uncles case these bulls were infected when they were calves; the hard thing to swallow is that these bulls are coming 3's. So these animals had to come from the breeder. The vet talked like my uncle should be OK with using these bulls, because they will be so disburse out on the range this summer, but my uncle is worried about spreading this disease to his herd. If he chooses to replace his bulls this year, it is going to be a big hit. It looks like way to deal with this disease is to come up with a management program.
My question is has anyone else out there ever had to deal with this disease?
From what I understand the disease attacks the intestines so that the animal can't get the nutrients from the feed. So they are eating, getting a belly full and starving to death.

My dad and I had a little time this past 2 weeks to build out Big Square Bale Spears. We built 3, so that we can have 1 on each skid, and also 1 on the tractor-loader if needed. We felt they turned out pretty good. Yes they look heavy built and weigh about 450lbs a piece.

The pros are too many to list almost everything about it is a pro, 4x4, diff lock, dump, cab everything smooth as butter. The only cons i can think of are the price, purchase and parts, and the top speed.... I know no one bought theirs for the top speed, and I did not buy my truck for its top speed but sometimes its nice to feel the wind in your hair :drive2:. Other than that the only minor things I would change are improved arm rests on the doors and inside door locks.

Alfalfa rotation
When you rotate your alfalfa, what crop or crops do you rotate with?
I have three fields to plant this spring. One is going back into alfalfa after a year of barley. It is getting 30T/acre of manure before it's planted. It should be fine, soil tests will give us the details.
I have two other fields to plant and I am looking at options. I would ideally like to put in a crop that I can harvest with my hay equipment, but that may not be possible. I have thought of beardless barley and haying it at the dough stage. I have considered Teff grass but it doesn't do well here from what I understand.
The other options that I have considered are Corn or Sorghum. Corn and Sorghum would require a chopper, a cart, and trucks. I have everything necessary for a silage pit and cover etc....I also have use of a chopper and cart. It shouldn't be that hard to track down a truck.
I should mention that grains are out due to Coors and Bud reducing acreage contracts by roughly 40 % this year.
Another consideration for me is that I would really like to increase organic matter in the soil as mine is fairly depleted. The home place is a work in progress. Prior to 2006 when we bought it, it hadn't been turned under since the 80's.
My acreage changes from year to year dependent on rent ground etc. This is an ongoing conversation that seems to present itself every couple of years.
If you have any suggestions, fire away. I am sure that there are crops that I haven't considered.

What do I need to keep an eye on?
I'm picking one up this weekend from a local shop. The guy traded up to a 6 basket, but I'm still going to try and get his number and call to talk to him about it if they will let me.
I know it needs about 5 teeth replaced. Plus I'm going to lower it down and check for play in the universals and each basket. Anything else I need to look for?

Kuhn GMD 44 disc mower problems
Hey guys. When I bought the mower, the guy said he took really good care of it, and I know him, so I didn't look too closely at it when I committed to the purchase. Long story short it has some issues, and I was hoping to pick your brains if you have experience with these things. I'm sure it'll be a good mower with about $500 +/- in parts, which is fine because I kind of planned on spending some money on making it right anyhow. I only paid $1000 for it, which is good around here. It's hard to find a used disc mower period!
Details are in the vid. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Winter depression
As many or most of you know last year was my first season putting up hay. So naturally this is my first "off season" and it's not going well. I usually get cabin fever during the winter but it's been worse this year because I keep thinking about haying. It is a lot of work wrenching on broken down equipment and throwing squares in 90 degree weather but I can't wait for it. Personally I think it's the payoff after all of the hard work and perseverance to produce a good solid bale. Aside from that it's nice to be self sufficient and be able to feed your own animals.
A lot of people put up hay as part of there job but I do it because I enjoy the process. I don't think I've ever enjoyed something as frustrating and challenging in my life. If you enjoy haying what are the reasons?

I want to wire a 12 volt 2way asco solenoid valve(generally closed) to a murphy tattletale switch(518 APH). There are three wires coming from the valve, obviously one is ground, one should go to a SW terminal on the murphy, where would the other yellow wire go? I know I should call my local electrician but surely I can figure it out! I included a couple pictures to better illustrate what I'm working on.

Article on: Adjusting Mowing Equipment for Increased Stubble Heights When Harvesting Native Grasses
I found this while looking the cutting height of standard shoes on a New Holland DiscBine. Interesting article from the Univ. of Tennessee. Not sure I agree on the placement of cylinder limiters on a NH Discbine lift cylinders because that means the head could just be hovering above the ground and anytime I've seen that the head bobs up and down with the header flotation springs. High Stubble shoes on a DiscBine like we run will get you about 5" cutting height max. according to NH but I think it's more like 4". Not sure if the first article has been posted before but I've posted the second one in the past.
This is a good article on adjusting a DiscBine for regular crops.

We just started a small horse ranch. We have a 80 x 150 ft. corral. Over time the horses have compacted the soil to the point that water simply runs off or pools. I have a John Deere 3320 tractor. What implement should I purchase to break up the soil? I planned on mixing sand into the soil once I get it loosened up. Any suggestions?

As we are about to build our new barn, one of our biggest costs is in keeping stock tanks ice free here in Maine. Add in 10 more stock tanks at 1500 watts apiece, churning 24 hours a day, in the state with the highest electrical costs in the nation, and it is easy to see why we came up with a geothermal system that would keep our stock tanks ice free. It would even be cheap to do, so when we were approached about a Rural Alternative Energy Program I had the highest hopes.
Nope, we do not meet the cost requirements...we were too LOW in cost!
They loved the idea, they just did not like that it was not an off-the-shelf commercially available product, and cost $250 per water tank; we needed to be at least $10,000.
The thing of it was, they would gladly pay for an $80,000 windmill at our farm, or a host of other things, but my wife and I did not want to take advantage of tax-payers, we only wanted what we would rightfully use, and help us be productive and kick food onto the national food chain; no more, no less.
The kicker is, the reimbursement is only 25% so the farmers that are funded are the ones who really don't need it. Needless to say I was a bit agitated. Perhaps being up all night due to a blizzard and lambing season did not help, but I fired back a scathing email. It down right angers me. In the National Farm Bill there is only 1% that is available for conservation and so many are vying for it, it is silly to fund a program that continues to hurt low income farmers through the downward spiral that is the current electrical pay-per-killowatt system. Here is my response letter! Keep in mind their replay was something like, "I hope you understand, but we cannot fund your project..."
Dear REAP,
I understand; it is NOT okay, it is just that I have long understood the travesty of the current alternative energy situation. Until the way electrical usage is changed via the pay-per-killowatt system, no real change will come about.
Sadly, people like my Uncle who have exorbitant amounts of money to spend, qualify for cost-share programs and rebates, and obtain them, while the ones with low income are unable to due so. As his energy bills are drastically reduced, the financially struggling end up paying more per kilowatt since it costs Central Maine Power just as much to maintain the lines no matter how many kilowatts are pushed over them. With the Public Utilities Commission increasing electrical rates to compensate Central Maine Power to maintain their portion of the grid, those who can afford efficiency and alternative energy are motivated even more to do so. With Central Power making even less money because of the reduced kilowatt usage, rates continue to climb yet again. Its a downward spiral leaving the fiscally strapped even more burdened; and yes small farmers especially.
I was hoping the REAP Program would help in ending that situation, but I can see its merely government bureaucracy at its worst teeming with overreaching mandates that hinder and not help. Due to the limited amount of funding for farmers as is, rather then fund a program that caters to those that can already pay for their energy costs, I will contact my congressmen to try and eliminate some over-reaching mandates of this program. To be frank, 25% is a pretty low implementation percentage, and until the REAP Program approaches similarities like the USDA-NRCS EQUIP Program, it will not help those farmers who need the most help.
Sadly I lacked the time already put into this endeavor as I am super busy, however now it will take even more time as I try to get this program defunded through the proper channels. This is not about not being funded for a particular project, it is about a program that does not help those whom congress intended it for.
Regretfully,
Rutted Field

New Baler & Accumulator
Just following up on my post last month on bale kickers, I gave up on finding a local machine without having to travel 100+ miles to go get it:
Yesterday, I brought home an unused 2013 Case IH SB541 baler (New Holland BC5070) & 2016 Kuhns 1036F accumulator & grapple. I'll still have to go with hand stacking in the barn, but the Kuhns system gives me the most flexibility for the future. If things go well, I will get to build a new barn in a couple of years. I'm looking forward to the spring weather getting here now!

Best 1/2" Ratchet on market today?
Ok, I have had my Craftsmen sockets since the early 70s and they have served me well. I think I broke one years ago and replaced immediately by sears, no questions. However, my primary ratchet went lame on me probably 10 years ago or so and I have been to sears 3 times for a replacement but it keeps doing the same thing, the ratcheting mechanism is weak and its a pain. So, I am no longer going to play the replacement game with sears and just spring for a new 1/2" drive ratchet. Question for you tool experts, who makes the best one today? I am willing to pay for the quality, I want my tools to work when I need them to and that means skip Walmart. I would prefer to buy on line rather than track down Matco or some other outfit but I probably have a way to do that as well. They don't come to my barn to sell stuff. SO?

PZ Haybob 360
I've just bought myself a PZ Haybob 360, Grasspa 360
This is the wider version of the traditional haybob.
It can rake off to the side rather than out through the middle like the smaller haybob.
It turns and rakes well, and was especially useful on a job I did yesterday which was 6 small paddocks. The rake would fit through each gate without needing to fold it up. Much faster than my Kuhn 4m tedder that needs manual folding and unfolding each time.
Anyway, to my question.
The haybob just corner well.
The wheels don't pivot, not does the headstock.
Should the wheels pivot ? Perhaps they're seized.
Any gems of wisdom from other haybob owners.
Thank you

RTV 400ci - tires?
I just purchased a 2012 RTV 400ci and need to replace the tires. It came with 24x9-12 and 24x11x12. I would like to get the HDWS type tire since it will be used only on firm dirt roads. I haven't been able to find a source for these in the 24 inch size. It appears to me that going to the 25 inch sizes can be done, but I don't want to spend $400 - $500 on tires that won't work. Anyone here have experience with this? Any advice for vendors would be appreciated as well.

RTV 1100 relief valve relocation
I've found a huge amount of info on the function and adjustment of the HST system on this forum, it's a great resource.
I have a 2007 1100 with the HST relief knob on the dash. My understanding of the system is that the knob is attached to the high pressure relief valve and the low pressure relief valve is connected to the brake peddle. I need to pull the knob about 50% of the time during shifting while plowing. Because of the location of the knob, it's a pain to operate. I was thinking of connecting the knob cable to the brake peddle so it was always activated when the brake is applied. Does anyone know of a reason not to do this?

Silage facer
Thinking about building a silage facer, one of the rotary type, mounted to the top of a skid steer bucket, rake the face down then scoop up the silage and load. I am only feeding about 100 tons per year, pile is only 6' or so high so reach is not a concern. I have a hydraulic motor, they look pretty simple. What am I missing? Currently we are scraping down with the backhoe, slow but its working well enough. I would rather use skid steer to feed with, but I don't want to start 2 machines twice a day.

Mixed grass hay field conversion
Currently I bale a 4 acre field that produces more than enough small squares for my two horses. It is a mixed grass field brome, timothy, orchard grass, and fescue. The horses do not leave any behind even when they have access to the pasture. I would really like to remove just the fescue.
Is this even possible? I have heard about spraying it with plateau.
1. Any one have experience with plateau and killing fescue without killing brome?
My options I'm considering:
A. Spray the field with plateau in the fall.
B. Till it under and start over.
What would you do if it was your field?
Thank you,
matt

Wonder of Wonders: Survival
I am more stunned then anyone, but the credit goes to my wife.
We had twin lambs born last night and it was -5 degrees out, the ram-lamb about 3 pounds and the ewe-lamb about 2 pounds. I had just checked for lambs at 3 PM, and at 5 PM they were so cold their ears were blocks of ice and their hooves were frozen to their knees. Both were limp and lifeless and if it had not been for their chest moving, I would have thought they were dead.
So we bring them into the house which is standard protocol. Naturally you cannot warm them up until you deal with kytosis or you will put them in antiphelic shock and kill them that way. So I inject them with 3 cc of A and D and 5 ccs of Dextrose as the wife rubs them dry with a towel and gives them enimas. Sitting next to the woodstove they start to thaw, but their mouths are closed tight, so we just wait. By 7:30 PM they are starting to bleat in pain (a good sign), and then by 8:30 PM they are tossing their head about in spasms (another good sign).
I went to bed, but at midnight the wife notices they have their heads on the floor and their tongues are no longer flicked back against their esophagus (which is why you NEVER give a feeding tube to a cold lamb), and makes a bottle. Both suck it down, and with warm milk in their rumens they perk up and stand. At 3 PM when I get up for my lambing shift and to check the sheep for more lambs, they are walking all around.
A complete and amazing recovery. This is on par with some other amazing recoveries, but it never ceases to amaze me when it happens.
For other sheep farmers; never assume a cold lamb is dead. They come back from near death for a full recovery.

A friend had farmed it for close to 40 yrs.He didn't even know they were going to put it up for auction. He planed on farming it another 3 yrs till retirement.
I didn't go to the sale.It required a pre bid and a $10,000 deposit to attend.
Another neighbor sub leased the pasture and I would bet that goes into a CRP program.
Poorer farm for the area.Needs a lot of tile.It would take 150-200K to do that.

Size of Skid Steer needed for 10 bale grapple?
mercredi 8 février 2017
I have a skid steer on my wish list and intend to use it on a 10-bale grapple that is 8 with 2 ties and is @8' long from mounting plate to end of grapple. My bales tend to be 55 lbs and have not weighed the grapple.
I would like to know from experience how much capacity is needed to safely handle the grapple/hay on level ground. The specs of capacity will not readily convert to just weighing the hay and grapple due to leverage; I'm not good enough at math to figure it to my satisfaction.
I see 1845s and 743s etc around here fairly cheap, but don't know if they will do the job at hand.
I searched around on here, but didn't find my answer in previous topics.
Thanks, Mark

MF 25 3pt rake
I am considering trading my V-rake for a MF 25 3pt rake, I am waiting on pics and should have them this evening. Fella said he replaced ALL bearings last year, replaced the tires with solid tires, straightened a bar, he said it works great and also has another for spare parts.
My V-rake is just too cumbersome and doesn't do well in my small odd shaped fields so I'm thinking a rola bar would be better suited.
The fella is 3 hrs away around Knoxville,TN and he will be making the trip to me. I will be able to run it to have a look at it's operation and I'd like to know what to look for and check as I don't really know much about them, I ran one when younger but don't remember much..
I like the idea of being able to lift it over windrows & stop the pto as needed...
Those that know them please school me on the pro's & con's ...
I'll post the pics when he sends them...
Thanks
