Front Mount Reverse Rake

vendredi 31 août 2018

Anybody seen something that would work?
So after I cut my hay, I spread the swath back out the width of the cut with my recon 300 spin spreader.
So when I go to rake with the dual rotary rake, I’m driving on the hay and want to stop that.
I don’t want to make a windrow in front of the tractor, but would rather move the hay to the outside and get mixed up with the other hay. The other benefit to this is to have all the hay moved and fluffed up from where it was.
I’ve seen the kuhn and the agronic wr500. Right idea but moving the hay the oppisite way.
Would love to find something so I don’t have to customize something. Even though it would fun as h__l to do, it would probably cost me more.
Any help would be great.
Thanks all.

Newb Questions

Greeting All..new member, SE Texas, new owner of a 16' camo, 1140 CPX.
I've spent several hours reading the years of posts here. Wow...what an amazing resource! You guys really know your stuff. Wondered if I might get some advice on the following...

1. My RTV is showing some rust on the underside of the cargo bed frame. The frame containing the plastic panels. Can just this frame be replaced without replacing the entire cargo/dump bed?

2. How are the plastic panels in cargo/dump bed taken out? Looks like they might just bend a little and pop out, but don't want to break them trying to remove.

3. Does anyone sell the above mentioned panels, just the plastic part?

4. I'd like to add very bright LED bar to the front of the RTV and possibly back. Recommendations on brand, place to purchase?

5. I want install to look neat, no wires hanging etc. Best to mount pvc or conduit type thing to the vehicle? Would like to use the switch blanks in the dash to operate them, anybody have pics that could guide me some?

6. Last, I promise (at least for now!)...has anyone mounted a cell phone charge bank to the dash (or elsewhere) you think is clean and works for you? Would like to be able mount/charge two devices...and again look clean.

Really looking forward to getting a lot of use out of this super versatile machine! Thanks all for expertise I've already seen here!

2014 Cabela's LM35H - Electrical assistance needed

Hello all, this is my first post, thank you for allowing me to participate in the forum. I am looking forward to learning from and sharing info with the forum.

TRACTOR INFO:
2014 Cabelas LM35H Tractor 4x4
Serial Number: 35NJG00008
Model: Agricultural Tractor LM35H
Type: 4 Cycle Diesel
Engine: 35ps / 2700 RPM
Manufacturer: Tong Yang Moolsaw Co., Ltd (TYM)
Brand: Cabela's

BLUF: The "fuel shut off solenoid" stays electrically charged (hot) once started, unable to turn-off with key switch, burning up wires.

REQUEST: I am in need of the electrical wiring diagram for my 2014 Cabela's LM35H tractor.

QUESTION: Is there a difference in the control assembly for a TYM 354H (Part Number: 1472-680-210-2) and a Cabela's LM35H (Part Number: 1472-680-210-3)?

ENVIRONMENTALS: Replaced Wiring Harnesses, Relays and Controller Assembly after a SNAFU that burnt up the EOM wiring harness. Everything appears to be functioning fine with one exception, the "fuel shut off solenoid" stays electrically charged (hot) once started. The local John Deere dealership has been helping me out, though we have not been successful in finding the Cabela's wiring diagram for this tractor. We do have the TYM shop manual, though it leaves much to be desired and has not proven to be of value with respect to this issue.

NARRATIVE SITREP: I purchased this tractor approximately 6 months ago from the original owner. At the time it had 14.1 hours logged, not a single scratch and nipples on the tires. The tractor was 100% operational, not a single issue and it worked perfectly for my needs.

Fast forward 3 months, a little over 30 hours logged, and it had been setting unused for about a week prior.
Sunday morning at 0600 my dogs start barking and I awake to my tractor sitting under the lean-to..... "running". No one is around (validated through security cameras), the key is NOT in the ignition, but sure enough..... it's just sitting there running (thought it was God's way of telling me to get to work).

I drove it to the garage to investigate, but by the time I got there the wiring harness had already began to burn up. After shedding a tear, I reached out to the local TYM dealer requesting assistance. They were more than happy to sell me parts, but did not have the man power to take on the job of repairing my tractor. After replacing the main and dash wiring harnesses as well as the battery terminals, I started the tractor, which immediately led to the new wiring harness going up in smoke.

Since then it has been at the JD Dealer, it's all back together, but the "fuel shut off solenoid" stays electrically charged (hot) once started.

I've reached out to Cabela's where the tractor was originally purchased, who were extremely nice, they pointed me to the company that services their tractors. Everyone thus far has been very pleasant to interact with, but nobody seems to be able to crack the riddle of the "fuel shut off solenoid" staying hot.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mx5200

jeudi 30 août 2018

Traded my John Deere 5055e 2wd for mx5200 HST 4wd.Only have 23hrs on it so far. Very happy with the kubota. It is quite a bit smaller in weight and size but also a lot smoother and quieter. Runs a 6ft bush hog just as well as the bigger Deere. Smaller size actually helps a little as I use it in places to far to drive my bigger tractor or too tight to get it into.

Questions on spraying Lambda-cyhalothrin for army worms

I have read post below but I still have questions. I have Bermuda/crabgrass hay that is about 2 weeks out from cutting. I just found a heavy infestation of army worms all different sizes. I have some 12.7% Silencer that I have had stored inside for 5 years. I am going to spray tomorrow so I need answers tonite.

How many oz. of the insecticide per acre would you use? How many GPA of water do I use? Do I wait till dew dries off to spray? What spray height above grass canopy would you use with blue TR tips? Please help ASAP!

First time out for the Bale Bandit

I was able to get the new to me Bale Bandit in the field for the first time yesterday.  After getting the baler set to 42" bales, I powered it up and started feeding it.  It ran without a hiccup for the first 7 bundles.  Then it hatched a bundle with only one strap.  I noticed a strap dragging along behind the bandit and stopped to investigate.  Got that cleared up and finished the field without any more issues.  Overall impressed for my first experience with the machine.  Would like to try to shorten up the bales though.

Sorghum-sudan grass

mercredi 29 août 2018

I planted in 12 acres a product called Green Grazer V.. it has worked well in the past. ,BUT 30 in of rain last month when I went back to the farm to clean up the edges with the rotary mower I knew it was getting ahead of the cattle I didn't realize it was this bad. I clipped some of it off as high as I could lift the rotary mower. I wonder if some of this could be dry bailed or it needs to be wet wrapped

Anyone run oats with pea mixed in? Customer reviews?

I had looked before at adding pea to my oat hay.  As I recall this can boost protein to ideal levels and increase palatability for animals. No doubt cattle will love it but wondering how horse folks will be?  had plenty of horse owners buy my oat hay and everyone was happy with it, but have heard peas makes it even better.  I think the challenge becomes getting the right varieties so they are ready at the same time, and getting the ratio right.

Tree triming saw

Anyone have any experience with one of these saws?

http://limbsaw.com/

I seen one last night at the local 'have it all store'.  Presently I use a pole saw to cut limbs hanging out in my fields, I'm limited to 12' - 15' high (with branches coming down on operator).  Price I was told around $1,800!! Dealer cost around $1,700.

This saw appears to be in the Priefet family (the livestock handling equipment company).  This store is a grocery, hardware, Subway, equipment rental, lumber, Prieftet, Big Tex, Featherlite, etc. dealer.  I say "if Ben's doesn't have it, you don't need it" store (they even have a covered two place parking spot for the Amish folks ;)).

Chain for blades?

Looking at options in a offset cutter and happened upon this one. What I find most interesting is the "blades" it uses and what looks to be decent cut with them. It looks to be normal "link chain". On the grass it may be just beating it to death and not really cutting it and two days later it is back up. But still find it interesting. Guess you don't want it long enough so it could wrap around a uncut tree. Then you are depending on it cutting as it moves into the material just as with a blade.

Wonder if this would work on other rough cut mowers. Can think it would be safer if broke than rough cut mower blade but you sure have to keep rpms up there to cut level.

It is about the 42 second point.

Chain for blades?

Your customer's favorite bale size and baler options?

Looks like we might run hay again next year.  Probably Oat hay again laced with some yummy stuff.  I was yacking on another site and maybe sort of talked myself out of small bales.  I just might not have the time and man power for all that!  Plus I would have to invest in what I guess I would call a square bale "brick machine" that produces a steel banded square from 18-21 small bales.  That is slick, but I would have to spend some cash.  Need a baler and "brick picker upper" too....lol

My current baler is a 4x5 soft core Kron I believe.  I do like that there is no belts but the net wrap system just SUCKS!  It also requires that I pull a friggin rope to both start the net and cut it.  I could probably update it but was wondering if it will be worth it.  Last time I was under that thing like every 10th bale cutting net off the feed rollers.  It was NOT fun!

Ideas or thoughts on bargain balers that would have an ejector, proper monitor, and a reliable net system?

I am sort of still leaning on my 4x5 size.  I seemed to get some horse folks because the bales are light enough to handle, the width on a trailer is legal for all states, etc.

Managing Cow Herd Going into Drought

dimanche 26 août 2018

It's been hot and dry for a prolonged time in many parts of Texas. Our place is not considered overstocked with 42 cows, 3 bulls, and 12 yearling heifers on about 95 acres of well-fertilized hay and pasture land for a normal rainfall year, but this year is not normal. Spring rainfall was adequate to produce 1.5 cuttings of round bale grass hay and 4 cuttings of alfalfa to almost refill the 50 x 100 ft hay barn with what was fed last winter, but then the spotty showers began missing here. Today we made the difficult decision to sell all our calves except 8 of the best looking Brangus heifers three months earlier than normal because the grass, although it is staying green, is not growing. There will be no vac-45 weaning for a special calf sale this year. I put out rb grass hay Friday, at least two months earlier than normal, and the cows are eating it. If it doesn't rain soon, we will have to cull more of the cows.

Plans are to plant about 50 acres of cereal rye and oats in October and 8 acres of ryegrass in the alfalfa (taking it out after 5 seasons) in September as soon as we receive adequate moisture for germination and growth, but that will be a while before it is ready for grazing. Since I'm relatively new at cattle management going into a drought, how do you well-experienced guys handle this kind of situation?

An interesting observation regarding pigeon grass

samedi 25 août 2018

Does grazing have an effect on pigeon grass?  We hay some flood plain pasture, most of which we turn dairy heifers out on to graze for the rest of the summer and early fall.  We rent a few acres of pasture adjacent to our own pasture and that we only hay, we do not graze it.  I noticed recently that the portion of pasture that is not grazed is nearly 100% covered with pigeon grass.  There is very little pigeon grass at all on the acres being grazed.  Other grass fields or pasture that get cut and bale but not grazed are also covered with pigeon grass.  Any thoughts?

Mchale rd baler?

Anyone own or seen a Mchale rd baler in the field baling hay? I bought some Coastal rd bales baled by a Mchale that appear to be very firm well made bales. Gentleman I bought the 4X5.5 bales from stated he thought bales would weigh 1300#s which I seriously doubt.  I going to see if hay hauler will weigh a load of these bales.

Thanks,Jim

What’s a burnt Maxum worth?

I can pick up a burnt 5130 (in a barn fire burnt) for $100. I’ve only seen one picture so I couldn’t tell much. If it has any weights there’s at least something. Otherwise, for a two wheel drive ROPS tractor, is it worth much bother to run 50 miles for it?

Anyone NOT tedding their 2nd or 3rd Cuttings?

I clipped a couple of my fields yesterday, never intended on a second cutting (Timothy), but with the rains we’ve been having, the fields just needed manicured...

It looks like there is enough foxtail, milkweed, dogbane and purpletop to make a few squares of goat hay...

What’s there is - is free of Autumn Olive and multiflora rose, so that’s good...

Seriously, Ive cut is thin, but I think I can get a few squares. My concern is two fold. First - if I ted this stuff, I’ll loose a lot of it in the stubble. Second - if I don’t ted, come Saturday, i’m either going to have dry hay or buffered propionic acid hay.

I’m inclined not to do anything, except rake and bale.

What say you - do you automatically ted your later, thinner cuttings?

I thought we were done after our first cuttings for the year, looks like we ain’t finished yet...

Thanks!

Vermeer 504 SI Equal Fill/Auto-Tie

I recently purchased a Vermeer 504 Super I with Equal Fill/Auto-tie. The baler works fine but the auto tie and monitor do not work properly. The NEAR FULL and FULL work fine and to tie arms automatically retract to the twine feed position. After a second or two an E2 code displays and the beeper goes off. The maunal says E2 is under voltage below 10.5 volts. Also, the field count does not increment and occasionally the auto-tie will start randomly before the bale of full size. I have checked all the reed swithes and they all check good except a switch on the windguard that my Vermeer dealer cannot tell me what it does. It is made when the windguard is up. They are normally closed switches so I disconnected the windguard switch but saw no difference. I have the power plugged into an auxiliary plug on a Kubota M9000. When running the tractor puts out 14.2 volts. The aux wires are small, 14 or 16 gauge. Any advise is greatly appreciated. I would really like some input on how to troubleshoot before I just send the monitor off for repair. Does anyone have a schematic or wire color code so I could test the wiring to the connector and the switches? There is very little electrical help in either the parts or user manual.

Thanks, David Cochran

Control of Yellow nutsedge in Og

Has anyone successfully used Outrider to control yellow nutsedge in OG?  This year's  rain has thrown me a curve ball.  One of my go to fields for late summer hay got too wet with the monsoons and now has quite the infestation of nutsedge.  Unfortunately, I just spent a lot of money on redoing this field last fall and really would prefer not to have to burn it down with Gly and start over.  If you have been able to use it on OG when is the best time of year?

New Holland 575, problem or not?

Hey guys, long time lurker soaking up knowledge from you all. I finally run into something I need some advice on. Got a 575 with about 8000 bales through it. After last cutting I noticed some more pronounced wear on the knotter frame from the needle. I know the needle is supposed to contact the knotter, but is this too much? I’ve got 1 more run of about 600 square to do. I am wondering if it’s ok to leave alone and finish up, then clean the baler out at the end of the year and properly adjust and check the needle adjustment? Thanks for the advice and I hope my pictures show up.....

Lacing Baler Belts

I am lacing up some 10" belts on my Vermeer 504G. I am using braided cable. What I want to do is to put a J-loop at *both* ends. What I'm doing is pushing the cable all the way through with about 1" sticking out on each end. I then try to push the loop back into the belts. This is proving very difficult. I've tried other strategies, none very satisfactory. Since I can find no one talking about this, I presume I am missing something "easy." How do you guys connect cable to the lacing. Are you using only one J-loop. Is there a trick that I am missing?

JD 435 Bale Density Valve

Good evening all, havent had this baler long, makes pretty decent bales, however running through some checks and after replacing the faulty density gauge with a actual pressure gauge that works I have found that after closing the bale chamber the pressure slowly leaks off. I have manually checked the cylinder packing by removing the lower hose and applying pressure to the cylinder and they seem absolutely perfect. This is where it gets really interesting. With the lower hose removed on the RIGHT HAND TENSIONER when I close the gate and apply pressure to the cylinder the pressure rises to around 1200 psi and then hydraulic fluid begins to gush from the hose, not the cylinder, the hose. If you remove the LEFT HAND side hose and do the same thing there is no fluid backfeeding into that side. This is quite confusing and I seemingly cannot find any info as to how the valve is supposed to flow, obviously this cannot be correct. Hoping someone with experience of these Density Valves will be able to help me. For reference the sides I am calling Left and Right are looking at the front of the baler. Also, if anyone has a Technical Manual for one of these balers or a scanned copy it would be greatly appreciated.

Fall panicum and goosegrass

Hello there!

We bought a 30+ acre farm in SW Virginia in December of 2017. The 12+ acres of fields were used to grow corn and soy in succession. We cleaned up the fields and drilled in orchard/fescue mix in April of this year (it was a very wet beginning of spring!). The grass is actually doing great these days, I think the stand is getting established nicely.

However, I noticed two grasses in it: fall panicum and goosegrass. The orchard/fescue mix we planted was for our horses and hopefully to sell some leftovers (we only have two horses). However, fall panicum can be extremely liver toxic to horses - someone here just lost two animals to it being in the hay.

Has anyone here run across these? If so, how do you fight them?

Thanks!

Neighbors cows

mardi 21 août 2018

Today I had my dad come look at 2 herds of mine and while driving place to place we pass by other peoples pastures and talk about them. A few people in my area just graze to the dirt and the cow is always showing a little rib. I asked him about a few herds I drive by daily and he remarks that the guy with that herd is the same guy who has these cows and these....
He then says that guy always says gata keep a cow hungry or it will get lazy and not forage. Very rarly does he have over 2 inches of grass. All be it pasture is weed free and he is running more cows per acre. Seems to raise nice claves, bragus cows and brangus bull.
So my question is this. I know this is far from what any publication or book recommends. But if he is running more cows raising good calves isnt he technically making more money per acre. I guess his cows my not last as long. But he also isnt fertilizing or spraying a pasture for weeds. I doubt i could do this as i lease land and my land owners would run me off. Although this guys cattle are on leased land.

Help with a friend's haybine

I put up a former coworker's hay for her, using her equipment on her field since her husband left her. She has an older NH 488 with a reel that's slipping.

When I lower the mower all the way down it tilts forward really far, a lot farther than my 488 does. Even with the skid shoes dropped for a 3-4" cut. The angle is only adjustable for 7 or 10 degrees and if I recall is set the same as mine, so I don't understand why her's tilts forward so much more. As a result, if I have it lowered all the way, the reel will slip, or spin in a jerky manner, or just stop spinning altogether. If I raise it just a little bit then the reel moves properly. It's irritating because I have to manually set the height via the lift hydraulics which leaves a lot of hay on the field.

Could the reel be set too far forward so it catching on the ground or grass too much?

New Holland Troubles

Local dealer is apparently dropping NH as of Sept 1 this year.  Lost out to Kubota.  Never thought I would see the day.  Now there is more to the story which includes big mega dealers undercutting prices etc but this dealer has been strong here for some time.  Pretty sure that if Kubota had not picked up a hay equipment line it would not have happened.    I am actually surprised they did not pick up Krone.  Wish they had.

RTV900 trailer fitment

I posted an original thread some time back wanting to know about removing a rops in order to make a RTVX900 fit inside an enclosed trailer. I did find out that in fact the ROPS is quite removable with just a few bolts, but did not want to do it unless I absolutely had to.

http://www.nettractortalk.com/forums...t=17711&page=2

I did in fact buy a new 900 about 3 weeks ago. So far what little I've used it, enjoy everything aside from the sudden kiss the dash situation of stopping. I plan to deal with the static breaking/coast valve situation soon.

The trailer I had purchased earlier this year, I had to have built to certain specs to meet certain situations I needed it to meet. All that posed a bit of a problem with getting a 900 inside, mainly on height. But, am happy to announce thanks to lots of input and ideas, it is possible to squeeze an egg into a pop bottle.

6x12 enclosed trailer 81" overall interior height (max DOT height for a 6x12)

The door is 63"w x 75" tall

The rtv is 63.2"W x 79" tall

As for the width, ramp and door cables were plenty wide, the fenders give enough to cover the .2"

I lowered the shock preload to bottom which got me 1". Let 1/2 of the air out of the tires but due to stiff sidewalls only got me another 1.5". The rest was done by lightly compressing the shocks with ties down straps. Ramp slope geometry also played into the situation, making the opening actually around 76" by time the ROPS area need to clear.

Even though I bought this thing for later use, and will mostly be stored for a while, I do want to get it out from time to time to run it. It is doable but quite a chore. Ive ordered a set of 22" tires, that will allow me to get it in an out without any of the mentioned strapping. Will store the original set for that day when trailer storing it is no longer a desire.

How slow you can go is sometimes more important than how fast you can go

dimanche 19 août 2018

Sometimes the ability to go slow and creep along is what matters, not top speed. However when looking for information about UTVs on the internet it is easy to get the impression that top speed is the single most important spec.

We've had our RTV X1120 for a bit over a month and it's gone 23.7 miles during 12.0 hours of use for an average speed under 2 mph. We live on 11 acres on the side of a hill, with the majority of the land being former pasture which we mow once a year. The grass and other vegetation is thick and up to 5 feet tall this year which obscures bumps, rocks and holes and makes it difficult to tell where the edge of a bank is. There are some mowed paths but even those have bumps and low spots as well as the occasional step grade. So we go slow, ready to stop if we get too uncomfortable, though that rarely happens. On one of our first excursions through the fields I did mis-judge our location and started to drive off a three foot high boulder. But we were creeping along and I realized where we were, stopped and backed up.

Use of our RTV has included moving tools, hauling plant debris and rocks, carrying supplies when working our bees, general inspection of the fields and woods, going to get the mail, and taking friends for rides. The hydrostatic transmission in the X1120 is wonderful for crawling over difficult terrain and through high vegetation, and the dynamic braking is appreciated. We are almost always in Low range except for occasional trip on the drive in High when going to get the mail. So far we have not experienced any lack of power.

The hydrostatic transmission was one of the deciding factors for the X1120 over a Gator. The dynamic braking of the hydrostatic transmission works at any speed down to stopped. We have a tractor with a hydrostatic transmission so I'm used to easing off the the "go" pedal to avoid stopping abruptly rather than just lifing off and expecting the vehicle to coast as in a car or truck.

Overall we are very pleased with the X1120 and its ability to go as slow as we want. It's also fun to use.

What to do with rained on hay?

samedi 18 août 2018

My luck making good quality dry hay this summer has been terible, anyway I had about 15 acres of alfalfa grass mix cut down and was very close to being ready to bale, we got 3 inches of rain and it's now pretty much crap. So my question is what should I do with it? I don't own a chopper or I would blow it back on the field, would a rotary cutter chop it up enough and spread it out. I do have acces to a 15 ft rotary cutter.

TF OG new hay field. Need help

I planted 20 acres of TF and OG this spring. This is the first field I have planted. I didn't cover crop it and I've have had weeds, weeds and more weeds. I cut it 3 times so far and I think I have every weed that I could possibly have. I was hoping to get a cutting of in a couple weeks. It looked good from far but far from food. I believe the nice tall grass I was seeing is summer grass. More than half the field is loaded with it. I couldn't have got that nice of a stand if I planted it. I can't even see my OG anymore. The trefoil seems to be doing very well and I have a lot of clover in it that I didn't want. I have 2 questions, if I cut and bale into baleage is it going to be worth a crap and should I expect this field to be better next year or should I replant?

Drum Mower or Disc Mower

My operation is at the hobby level, less than 1,000 small bales a year with old equipment.  The tractor I am using is 54HP and my land is flat.  I am finally ready to ditch my sickle bar and move up to a better cutter.  Here is eastern Virginia I do not run across used equipment very often and buying a used disc cutter sight unseen and having it shipped to me is a bit scary to me.  Even if I find one locally I am not sure I would be able to tell if it is in good condition.  I am looking at a new Morra disc mower from Agri Supply or a Tar River Drum Mower.  The Drum Mower costs a lot less than the disc mower and being belt driven I think it may be more reliable than a low end disc mower.  Is my reasoning sound here?  What are the downsides to Drum Mowers versus Disc Mowers?

Changing Coolant Every Two Years

I've always tried to stick with the recommended maintenance schedule on my Kubotas, including changing/flushing the coolant every 2 years. But recently I've had two different dealers tell me that they don't change coolant unless there is discoloration or high hours. Thoughts?

New Holland 1069

vendredi 17 août 2018

I have a new-to-me NH 1069 Stackcruiser with the Perkins diesel. It appears to have lead a hard life with little maintenance over the years. I am in need of many parts - so far looking like I will need do completely redo rear brakes. Needs a fan blower motor. And a few other small things. If I have to buy from New Holland I will be broke soon. :-)

If anyone has part number cross references / interchanges to NAPA or other parts stores I would greatly appreciate it! Any info regarding the drivetrain would also be appreciated. I believe I heard that many of the rear end and brake components from early 80’s Ford F600 trucks would be the same. My bale wagon serial number is 2892 - not sure what year that would have been bulit?

Late cut baleage

Our weather around here lately has been pretty tough to make any dry hay. Had a really wet/cold spring, then turned hot and dry. Got a good bit of our hay put up, but then again starting in August, it has been 60-80% chance of pop up storms nearly every day. The worst thing about these odds it that it really hasn't rained many of these days, but when it does, it's a wash out. Hard to make plans. Between this and my work schedule, finishing up hay has been difficult. I have about 20 acres left that I need to get put up that is getting pretty old. I know it's not recommended to wrap anything but top quality because of the cost of wrapping, and lower sugar levels in the grass will keep it from fermenting. Any suggestions? I would like to go in right behind the mower and bale then wrap, and try to beat some of this rain. We have some other 2nd cutting that we would like to put into small squares, but it may end getting wrapped also.

Return on accelerator sticking and drive to rear wheels appears intermittent

Hi there, I've moved onto my next project, a 2007 rtv 900, ex fruit farm and ex kids playground toy! It has had a harsh life but I've managed to acquire it and am willing to try and fix it. Fuel tank was full of sand so removed and flushed out, removed sand from air inlets etc, put new battery on and after about an hour tinkering have managed to get it starting off the key! Not bad given not run for three years or so! Next problem, broken rear CV joint to rear axle. Axle removed and engine started - sometimes drive to rear wheels sometimes not...when there is drive to rear wheels I tried to stop manually but pushing out well and cannot stop it. Another issue is I cannot remove from gear once in gear unless I stop engine?? Are these issues linked? Hoping it is a relatively easy fix. Didn't want to spend lots of money on new drive joints then discover gear box is knackered!! Any advice would be appreciated. Suspect removed from farm due to issues but then put ibro farm play park for kids to play/climb on! Thank you.

Boom or boomless for small farm

I would like your experienced opinion. I have been hiring my spraying done by a local spay company and they do a good job, but I get wedged in between the big jobs so I don't always get optimum weather or timing. I also have lots of animals to move out of small paddocks to allow for the rig which does not work well. So I have been spraying small pastures/paddocks with a 12' boom sprayer 25 gal. tank. I works fine but it is slow going. The farm is just 40 acres, all pastures or hay.

I'm considering going to a bigger setup, and  bigger tank and 30 ft boom....but boomless would be much easier to move through gates and store. But the concerns about spray control, windy days and overlap makes me wonder which way to go.

I welcome your experienced input.

Skid steer for Steffens 6515

Hi everyone,
I purchased a Steffens 6515 I am looking at what skid steer would be a good option for this. First off I use a 1037 wagon to stack the bales in the shed. The Steffens is for grabbing the bales from the stacks and loading on customers trailers. Worst case for weight, 18 second cutting bales 75-80 pounds. I also I’m going to add a 1/4 turn rotation and that will put more forward weight. I live in an area where Bobcat is the only game in town for service and parts. I also would like a track unit rather than tires.
I am having a hard time making my mind up what i need. I was looking at a 120 Hp John Deere tractor that would work for the 6515. I also want a 40 Hp utility tractor for food plots. I could always use another tractor with a PTO for haying but i think a skid steer would work for loading bales and food plots. A skid steer will also be cheaper than the 2 tractors i want.

Grass Weed Plan for 2019

As most have experienced on the east coast this year, we have had unrelenting rain which makes hay fields lush but also provides for more grass type weeds.  Thinking barnyard grass, nut sedge, fox tail and crabgrass.  I certainly have my share in my OG fields and I keep my stands thick.  they are especially bad in the new field that had lodging kill after first cutting.  Now normally, I would stay ahead of the seeds by mowing but there is no weather to make hay here and none in the 10 day still.  So, I have to assume that a bunch of this stuff is going to drop some seed meaning I get to experience it next year as well.

So thinking ahead, what is my best approach, wait until about July 2019 and go after it with something that takes out crabgrass and foxtail after germination?  I mean pre emerge isn't going to work as the seed is still there lurking so i may as well let it germinate and try to kill it after germination.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Forklift for Grapple Stacking in Barn

This is our first season using a Kuhns AE15 accumulator and 15 bale grapple - nothing but praise so far with the system.  Having now spent some time stacking in the barn with the skid steer, I have had a lot of time to think about ways to improve our system.  I keep coming back to thinking how much faster I thought I could be with a forklift, not to mention stacking higher.  After a quick search on here, looks like I was not the first one with that idea!

I have read enough to be convinced this would be a good improvement for us, but wanted to get thoughts from some of you on forklift sizing for this task.  The 615 grapple recommends a loader lift capacity of 1900lbs, but this will not translate directly to forklift lift capacity, as the 15 bale stack extends farther from the mast and could lead to tipping concerns in an under-sized machine.  For any of you that are using a forklift with a grapple or have other forklift experience, how did you go about determining the size of forklift required?  Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Reminder: Time to mow woody plants

mercredi 15 août 2018

August 15th - September 1st is a good time to mow pastures and CRP ground to control woody plants like multifloral rose, blackberries, brush, etc.

These plants tend to go from limb growth to storing sugars in the root system for next year.  Mowing them now inhibits that storage mechanism so they cannot regrow next spring.

What herbicide to use?

I got some pastures I’m wanting to spray and I am not sure what to use. I have a lot of ironweed but also a mix of about everything else you don’t want as well.

There is hardly any clover so I am not worried about burning it. The pasture is used for beef cow/calf operation and no hay is going to be made off of it. I saw the GrazonNext HL thread and thought maybe it might be the ticket? But I thought I would ask.

What herbicide to use?

Seeding over OG

I did a google search and didn't find the answers I was looking for.

I have a field of Alfalfa and Orchard.  The alfalfa is thinning out, and is time for it to go.  I do have such a nice stand of OG, and I was wondering if I could overseed some grass into it and get a grass blend field.  The question is:

What type of grasses to overseed into OG?  Timothy or Brome would be my top choices, with maybe annual ryegrass to get established.

When to seed?  Now, or frost seed?

I could drill it with my old 510 drill, or drop seed it, or broadcast?

What's the "lifespan" of OG?

thanks,

Scott

Back and forth movement on upper a-arms

mardi 14 août 2018

When letting off the go pedal I can feel a clunk turns out it’s slop in the front upper a-arms. I did some searching on here and found a couple threads about it but no real fix. Has Kubota come up with a fix? My fix would be a couple shims on either side of the arm to take the slop out. Any part numbers out there for these shims?

Small herd breeding options

lundi 13 août 2018

Id like to have my 5 goat does bred this summer, 2 boer/lamancha crosses and 3 alpines. Although bringing in a buck might be a little more “my speed” I am starting to like the idea of artificial insemination. Any thoughts or past experiences with doing this? I was thinking Id like to use a boer sire. Never had any experience with AI, and input is appreciated

Cows- to take up the free time I dont have!

Well, after wanting to get some cattle for a few years it looks like this is the year. Ive got the hay production and the brother just got some land with a few barns on it so we can finally make it happen, as if we didnt have enough going on already. Ive been keeping an eye out for Highlands due to the smaller size and ability to reach a decent weight without grain and very little has popped up that isnt 2 hours away or too far above what I can afford. As it turns out I found a guy about 5 min away who has 5 Highlands he wants to sell. Never knew they were there as his property is dense woods up front. He has 2 cows (each about 6or7 years old), 2 heifers (1year old), and a bull calf born this spring. He had them as a hobby but doesnt want to feed them another winter, is asking $700 each. Figure I cant go wrong at that price, they all appear to be healthy and solid. Definitely getting 2, maybe more if I can scrape up the change....

NH BC5070 FLYWHEEL SHEAR BOLTS SNAPING OFF

The BC5070 bailer has about 5,000 to 6,000 bales through it. I am the origanal owner. I start hearing  a strange banging noise on and off. The shear bolt on flywheel broke. This was the first time ever having this issue. I install new one snap! ok something is way wrong. The first thing I find the safety latch  is banging on flywheel arm. I adjust cable to move latch back. Snap again. Than I notice needle arm is not coming back all the way. Now I try turning the knotter break springs three of them . One full turn. Can still move knotter back and forth buy hand pulling on it. Flywheel bolt snap. Now I try another  half turn ( in all was 1.5 full turns on springs. knotter is now stiff. Than I find latch adjustment screw and move it about 1/4 inch.

So it seems to me the knotter is not returning needle arms to the right position. Is why I tied what I did. The tack on tractor is after market and has proven to not be accurate. So I count the RPM and find it was 68 if I remember right it should be 92 RPM.

I turn up RPM to 92. Than smooth sailing after all adjustments listed. I still don't really know what was right  and what was not necessary.  Got the job done but what about next time. Will I have the same trouble next time or what???????

Thank you much

Hay customer needs 10% sugar

I have a customer that needs hay with a max of 10% sugar in it. I normally have just the field of hay to accommodate her but not this year.. it all got baled before August.
Her horse is like 38 years old and she says he will get Founder if the sugar is over 10% I feel kinda bad that I can't seem to get poor enough hay for her. I need some really late first cut but can't find any. What a dilemma.. and she wants 250 bales.. best part is she tests the hay before she buys it so we know what it is. So all my hay so far has been too good LOL, not funny for her but good for my other customers.

Leaf Spot Disease - Coastal Bermuda

Hello group.

I've been using this forum as a resource for a couple of years now.  I want to thank everyone for all the good conversation that has always proven to be helpful.  This is my first post to the forum.

I have a field that was sprigged in coastal bermuda back in May of 2016.  I'm located near Aiken, South Carolina and I'm dealing with about 9 acres of hay that I put up mostly for my own horses.  It's been a great stand of bermuda up until the past 3 weeks.  Along with everyone here in the Southeastern United States, I have been unable to catch a suitable weather window for baling since my first cutting that took place in the first week of June, 2018.  Excessive and almost daily rains accompanied by ridiculous humidity, even by our standards around here, have really been causing difficulty.  I've noticed that my field is browning out, considerably.  Upon some investigation, it appears that most of the grass is infected with a leaf spot pathogen (helminthosporium / bipolaris).

Hoping to get it cut off and round baled soon to try and start over fresh.  Just curious if anyone else is seeing this problem down around my region?

Anyone else ever seen this before?

Will a Farmhand grapple work with a Hoelscher accumulated bale stack?

Hi Guys,

New guy here trying to make hay on the cheap (aren't we all).  Picked up a Hoelscher 1000 accumulator with a MF 1839 baler at auction but it didn't come with a bale grapple. The ones I'm seeing are going for more money than I want to spend but I did find a Farmhand grapple that looks like I could modify (add more hooks?) and make work. Has anyone done this or know of a reason this wouldn't work?

Thanks for any help and thanks for all the info on this forum - I've already learned so much

Anyone use this coast plug for x1100c?

moisture readings

We were baling some alfalfa today and the moisture reading on the baler was reading 14% to 20% and my hand held was showing 17% to 25%. We were using preservative I was wondering if the high moisture reading could be from the center of the bale compression and the preservative? We unloaded it and will watch to see how it turns out rather then sell of the rack. I could not believe the hay was that wet because of the leaf loss.

New Idea 402 rake

Ok I have a New Idea 402 Rake that I was hoping to limp through this year but the roller bars keep falling out of the bearing holders. Is there a fix for this? The rake doesn't work all that bad other than that. I'm hoping to go a different route next year as far as a rake goes.

Reasonable project?

As some of you know, I am actively looking for a 4x4 baler. They can be had cheap and they are fairly abundant, but not in my area. One (Heston 4910) showed up at my dealer in a rare opportunity, but by the time I could call them, it had a deposit put on it and it was gone. Lots of 4x4's out west in "big sky" country, though in the 10-20k range. I don't quite understand why they're so cheap.....
Anyway, I'd like to bring one in from out there if one can't be found locally. May be advantageous in that it's a drier climate and the baler may be better than an eastern baler. I think I can get a good one with 15-30k bales on it in the 15-18 range. Figuring on 2-3 for transport. So I'm thinking 20k budget to get it here.
Now comes the background and question: my 7495 will pull it and stop it reasonably well on flat ground, but my dealer, MM Weaver, thinks it'll require brakes for the hills I'm on and "roading" the baler. My 7495 has air trailer brakes and hydraulic trailer brakes ready to use.
So, I started looking for one of the single axle "one ton balers" with brakes......nadda one available. MM Weaver estimates $10,000 for brakes. They were available as an option on the Heston 4910 and a similar Massey baler. I guess I could sell my 7495 and for $10,000, just buy a bigger tractor. However, I really like it and would rather not start that process all over again. I got a nice deal on it.
My question is: Should I try to find an independent equipment specialist to install air brakes on a 4x4 baler? Is it even possible? Do they make generic kits? Obviously I will keep looking for one being sold with factory brakes, but if I can't find one, this could be an option I may have to consider. Could end up with 25-30k in the baler. Other balers with steerable tandems and/or brakes are out of my budget or require a 200-250HP tractor.

New to us 2016 x1100 is pretty jerky when pushing go pedal and hst braking is a little harsh for our taste. My old 900 I installed the coast cave and liked the feel of that. Would like the new one to act the same. No cost valve available for this model, read there is an adjustment I can make to lessen the braking?? Is there something I can do to stop the jerky stars? Also why haven’t they put a grab handle on the drivers side?? Anyone find a grab handle that will work??

Picked up the new MoCo

Well it’s been a long time coming and after over two years of talking about it I finally have a disc mower conditioner. Picked it up at the dealer a few days ago.....fresh off the truck from the factory in Ottumwa Iowa. Got the V10 steel rolls, equal angle drawbar hitch, hydraulic tilt, wide swath kit, and high stubble shoes. Spent a few hours today getting it set up on my tractor and ready to go. Can’t wait to try it out.....looks like we might have a few dry days starting Monday......have 4th cutting alfalfa that is starting to bloom and needs cut asap. Looking so forward to being able to mow without having to get out and unplug the haybine constantly.

Another hay field renovation question

I am going to renovate my hay fields this September, Fescue KY31.

My fields are KY31 now but are getting thin and becoming non productive. I have taken soil samples but don't have the results back yet. I know lime is needed, It has been 3 years sense the last spreading. I have 2 loads waiting on the spreader, enough to apply 3t per ac. Also plan to spread P&K when the sample lets me know what is needed.  I will be doing all my planting this time with the county's no till drill..

Questions ....

1 - Will I hurt the Fescue that is established in the fields now if I set fire to it to get rid of some of the thatch, plan to bush hog it down close in the next few weeks..

2-  Is their a better variety than KY31, not going to convert to the fungus free type either...

3- planting rate per ac for no till over seeding..

4- With fall weeds starting soon should I plan to spray early this fall or better to spray before planting, and what to use that won't hurt clover planting late winter..

5- Plan is to have seed in the ground by mid September, should I spread a fertilizer mix before or wait till after the new seed comes up..

Thanks, Chris

V Wheel Rakes

I'm contiplating on looking at eithe an 8, or 10 V Wheel Rake. I had a 4 wheel rake before, but only could do one row at a time, and I thought it did an alright job. I sold it, when I bought my Tedder Combine Rake, and still use my 5 bar rake, but with the 5 bar rake, I can only do one row, at a time, and would like to speed up the raking part, of haying.
I operated an 8 V wheel rake years ago, to put 2 rows into one, and it did a good job, as well. I know they are ground driven and my only concern is this, we put manure on alot of our hay ground, in the fall, and in the spring, we harrow, using Chain Harrows, to help break up the clumps, and spread the manure out better.
What In wondering, or worried about, is the manure being gathered up again, by the rake, and put into the hay rows. Just wondered if that was anything to worry about, or now. Just thought it would help speed up Hay Production. What's everyone else's thoughts, on this matter. Thanks again, in Advance, for your input. Bruce.
