Need help with setting baler belt tension

dimanche 29 avril 2018

I have a NH br750 baler and am trying to set the belt tension as reflected by the tension gauge. I can pressurize the system with another tractor and have cycled the system several times by opening and closing the  baler. Once the pressure is reflected on the gauge (say 1800, for example) and then close the baler the pressure remains and does not drop down to zero. If I have the pressure at zero then there is no pressure  reflected when I open the baler. I have the control knob at the cylinder open as far as possible - counterclockwise. I cannot find any help in the owner's manual. It seems like I am missing something simple, but I cannot figure it out. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

2018 Custom Hay Stack/Haul Rates

samedi 28 avril 2018

Hi all. I'm new to forums and new to the custom hay hauling business. I am located in central Nevada. I own a Roadrunner hay squeeze, that I am currently running. I recently purchased a New Holland H9880 and have a Milstak clamp ordered so I can haul 3x4 bales also. I am also putting together a Peterbilt with a hay retriever bed (may not have it ready this season).  Curious what are the average rates for these are? Currently I am charging $100 per hour or per truck load for the squeeze service.  Not sure what to charge for the stacking of small or big bales for the bale wagon or the hauling of the retriever. Also curious what they are charging in southern Oregon or northern California (if not enough work here, might go that way). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Baler moisture meter for small squares.

vendredi 27 avril 2018

I am sure this had been covered several times but i I am considering installing a agritronic moisture meter on my John deere 336 square baler and was wondering if it is worth going with the bht-2 vs bht-1. Also I will be baling midland99 bermuda horse hay so what would be the highest moisture % I could bale and stack bales in barn the same day? I have always tried to be bellow 16% but it does not always work out.

Choice between micron early bale or new holland/harvest tec crop saver acid.

Tried hay guard for a couple of years and though it seems to work I just don’t like all the left over dry ‘salt’. We can get a lot of moist sweating situation in the humid summer and it just seems to reactive the salt properties of it. Even if you spray it off is seems there will be a haze left of dry powdery residue. I’d rather not use a pressure washer, just hose off and it just doesn’t seem to rinse off. I’ve used acid before and feel comfortable with clean up and a hose. So my choices are between early bale or crop saver. I’m sure both are good. Is there any reason to lean to one over the other? Price is about the same and ease of ordering is as well. Thanks for any input as I know these preservative threads are beat to death sometimes.

Farmhand accumulator hydraulic tank size?

jeudi 26 avril 2018

Can anyone tell me what size the hydraulic tank is on the farmhand accumulators? The one with the pump inside that runs off the flywheel or even one of the ones that go with the PTO pump system. Also would be interesting to know what size steel it's made out of. I believe heavier steel helps with heat dissipation. Although mine is lighter steel I don't really notice the oil getting too hot. I didn't get a pump with mine so I rigged one up and used the rule of gallons should equal the output of the pump which is approx. 12gpm so I used a 12 gallon tank. When I look at pictures of the farmhand one it looks to be quite a bit smaller than that. I'm thinking of trying another tank and the smallest size I can use would be better since it goes on the side of the baler by the pickup. I'm still having a problem of the pushover arm cylinder failing to push the bales over all the way sometimes especially when it has to push the six bales over to make room for the final two. If I could buy a regular farmhand pump in tank I would. One thing I will try this year is to eliminate the suction strainer I have in the tank, I was just reading that they are not good to have.

RTV900 Does not move in M or H when trying to go up a slope

Hi guys. I am a new member and I recently purchased a 2004 RVT900 with 1400 hrs on it. I test drove it while on a level lot and everything seemed to work okay. But when I got it home, my property has several sloping grades . By grades I don't mean hills but gentle sloping pasture land. When I try to go up a slope, L works fine but when in M or H, it will not budge. I can go in reverse up the slope. All this has been tried with just me in the seat, no heavy loads in the bed. Any ideas where I should start looking?

Stacking square bales with grapple

mercredi 25 avril 2018

I was wondering how many bales high y'all usually stack small squares 14x18x36 bales with or without a grappler. I was wondering how many bales high I could go before it became unsafe or started squishing and damaging the bottom bales. I have been going 6 bales high but was wondering how far I could go and what works out good for everybody.

2017 Planted Brome Field is Empty?

Hello everyone,

it's near the end of April here in Michigan, and my Orchard Grass field planted last spring seems to be growing ok, but my brome grass field is nearly empty. Granted, our pasture grass isn't really very green yet and grass everywhere is just starting to pop up . . .

Now, the brome field is in a lower area and tends to stay wetter longer. There's no standing water but the ground is pretty squishy. We seeded both field twice thanks to a druought after the first seeding in the spring, but the brome field never really seemed to grow even last year.

Now it's growing weeds everywhere, and just little tiny bits of grass sporatically. I don't remember the lbs/acre but we bought 2 50lb bags and used a drop style seeder. So about 50lbs each seeding on about 1 acre.

Did a soil analysis before planting and ground was ok. We've had good luck here with teff in the summer and since brome grows wild EVERYWHERE we figured it was a no brainer to try to grow.

It's a pure stand of Big Ton XL bromegrass. The bag does say hard to establish, but that's pretty vague. My husband is mad as a hornet and wants to rip out the field and plant something else/. The brome grass was $260 per bag. I had asked the feed mill guy if a nurse crop of oats might do it well over winter but he said no need. Now I'm wishing I had gone with my gut :(

Will this field bounce back once it dries a bit more? The weeds are really sprouting and I'm not happy. Or could I add a nurse crop right now to help push the weeds out or will this push out the brome too?

I'd like any thoughts or advice on this one. The Big Ton variety is best suited as a monoculture planting according to the info on it.

Thanks!

Suzanne

Oversized round baler tires

mardi 24 avril 2018

Replacing both damaged tires on BR7060 Sileage special
Factory tires were Carlisle Farm Specialist 31-13.50-15 8 ply
Factory rim looks like an 11x15
Looking at any other options, especially if I can safely get into a larger tire
If not, I will switch to Carlisle 10 ply. For some reason they are cheaper than 8 ply..

Anyone successfully upsized their tires on a 11x15 factory rim?

Disc mower leak

Howdy, new to the forum, but a long time lurker.

Need some advice, I'm working on a Sitrex DM7 disc mower that I picked up at an auction last fall. I did my homework and it is identical to the Rhino DM7 and New Holland HM236 type of mowers with a gear bed design. Seemed like good backup to my troublesome sickle swather at a great price.

I tore into the machine today. Right off the bat, I could NOT turn the turtles by hand. Not that surprised as it had sat for a few years prior. After removing the retraining nuts from the turtle caps and some convincing with a hammer, I finally freed them up. They all turned and so did the PTO shaft, but still rather stiff. As a few of the turtles needed some welds anyway, I decided to remove them and inspect.

After removing the turtles, I scraped out all of the old twine, hay and dirt that had built up underneath them. Then, I noticed a problem...oil had started seeping out from around the shaft on the last turtle at the lowest point of the cutter bar.

Now, my first instinct is to replace the seal referenced in the manual, which means destroying a good bearing. As this is my first time working on one of these, is this something I should even worry about? Or will bolting down the turtle act as a seal regardless? See the schematic. Any advice is appreciated!

TC24D battery light on - guessing alternator

Been using the tractor off and on all winter without issue, including all day cleaning the barn a few weeks ago. Went out last Sunday to take some feed to the barn because it was too wet to take the truck. Start the tractor up, battery light comes on and it stays on. Thinking, uh oh, this isn't good. I go ahead and take the feed to the barn because the girls were yelling and wanted fed. So I brought it back to the garage. With everything off, the battery was sitting at 12.38 volts. With the tractor running it was at 12.2. Thinking it was either regulator or alternator itself I start looking. I checked eBay and what do you know. Found a bunch of hits. These all of course look like Chinese knock offs, but it was $60 w/ free shipping. It came Thursday. Saturday night I pull the old one off. It is very rough turning and if you listen closely you can hear a small screech in it. The new one turns very smooth and can hear nothing. It had a diagnostic paper in the box with everything saying the voltage and amperage and everything it put it. Supposedly it is able to put out 52 amp when the tractor originally came with a 40. I compared the old and the new. Identical except the new is silver instead of painted black and has a metal casing on the back instead of plastic. I put it on, fired the tractor up, the battery light was off.

Told my wife, it fit and works, now the question is how long. I'm guessing I could change several of these $60 units for the price of one from New Holland. As long as it isn't failing all the time, I think I'll be good.

Grinding my own feed.

I have a small but growing feedlot that I finish some cattle for freezer beef. (10-15 currently). It's in an old 3 sided hog barn that I've converted to work for cattle. I'm currently buying a complete feed ration from the local feed mill. Going into my third year of this endevour I'm considering saving myself some money and grinding my own feed. I have acces to shelled corn, or rather I would purchase it from a local farmer and run it through a feed grinder. Does anyone do this themselves? I know nothing about grinding and making my own feed but am strongly considering buying a pull type grinder mixer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Farmall Cultivision A for sale - what's it worth

Hi Folks, I have a 1947 Farmall Cultivision A that's been completely restored. This tractor is in showroom condition and it's taken the first place prize at a tractor show. I mention that just to demonstrate what a nice job the guys did in restoring it. Anyway, I'm in a somewhat of a financial bind and I need to part with the tractor. My question is...what is it worth? Also, what is the best way to advertise it. I could put it on Craigslist but I'd like to avoid that. Is there a better place to advertise antique tractors? Thanks.

All,

your advice is appreciated.

New Idea 5209 Cutter Bar Service

After about 17 years at 300 acres per year I have taken the cutter bar out of the haybine.  I bought it used about 17 years ago, it was just like new when I purchased it, one of the red ones.  I have done the yearly maintenance religiously changing the grease in the units and the hypoid in the main gearbox annually, regular greasing  and I have always kept it inside.  So, I still had a pretty good machine except the cutterbar was loose to the point that it was making me nervous.  The job was alot easier than I thought it was going to be.  I removed the cutterbar according to the directions in the manual.  It is very easy to work on once it is up on a couple of benches.  So, in the end I replaced the hex drive shaft, all the skid shoes and wear plates, new knives and the bushing type nuts that they pivot on,  All the self locking cap screws and most of other nuts and bolts.   All the individual drives show not wear.  The biggest part of the job was drilling out and retapping the 8 cap screws that broke off  during the process (8 out of 28).   Any of you that have the same job coming up it is   not too diffucult a job, just patience.  Definitely something that I would want to try to avoid in the middle of the season though, but not terrible..   .

First bales on new to me baler

vendredi 20 avril 2018

So i bought a vermeer rancher 665 a few weeks ago. Well baled 8 bales to test it out today. I had no clue what i was doing as this is my first time ever. Cut it with my new new holland h6830 and raked it up with a wheel rake into a small 2 foot windrow. I cut between some pecaN trees in 25 foot wide rows so small windrows on a light cutting. Hooked up the baler lubed the chains and all. Loaded net in. Then set the pickup about 1.5 inches from the ground and put her on 540 rpm and drove into some hay. Weaved back and forth every 2 seconds till it starting reading bale height then weaved every 4seconds keeping the bars even. Buzzer sounds bale is full it autowraps and once it finiahed i ejected the bale. Size was set at 66" got out measured the bale right at 66. Bale was pretty well shapped and tight. Except for the last 3 inches it is a little loose. I kept the bars even and it seemed if i did a really good job keeping them even it would stay at 1 or 2 bars for each side. How do i get the bars higher? I would post a pic but not sure how.

Pursuit/Thunder spray volume

I'm going to tackle my weed problem in my alfalfa/orchard mix and think I will use Pursuit or Thunder (same thing I believe).

In reading, I've seen a wide range of volumes and would like your opinion. I've seen anywhere between 20 - 60 gal/ac with many saying higher the better.

I have a 240gal sprayer and have Teejet AIXR tips (blue and brown). I 'can' put on 60gal/ac but that would mean a LOT of refilling for 20ac (5 refills). it would be worth it to me to treat the weeds well, especially since this is a new stand. But I'd obviously rather do fewer if possible.

What is your experience with Pursuit application and what has given you the best results?

I'm thinking about giving at least one 60gal/ac tank test on a 4ac strip, regardless of what I do on the rest, just so I can see whether it really makes a difference.

Adapter for using equipment lights with a truck.

With spring auction season in full swing here in Western New York, I'm noticing a lot of the newer equipment with lights and the 7-pin (round) plugs that seem to now be the standard for farm equipment.  (Yes, I'm starting to look at equipment that is new enough to have lights :P )  Has anyone here used an adapter like the one I found below when they are towing equipment with pre-installed lights so that the lights run off of their truck?  I have a set of magnetic trailer lights that I can use as well, but figured that the lights installed by the manufacturer are probably placed better on the equipment (for visibility, etc.).

Hay Rake Recommendations

I am starting to think about a new hay rake.  I've been using an 8 wheel carted rake, and really want to upgrade.  If this season goes well, the rake is the first thing on my wish list.

I'm doing about 60 acres of hay, mostly legume or legume-grass mix.  Currently mowing with a disc mower, mower conditioner(9 foot) will be next on the list after the rake.

Current process is to cut, then immediately ted.

I know FarmerCline had some real challenges with his double basket rake.  I'm leaning heavily towards rotary, but want to find whatever will work best, with quality of baled hay being the highest priority.

With the tedding, all of the ground is covered with scattered hay.  I really don't want to be dropping a windrow on top of hay that hasn't moved since it was cut/tedded in a very green state.  My typical practice is to rake a day ahead of baling, typically early in the morning, for maximum leaf retention.

Baling with an inline small square, Case 8530, which has a 72 inch pickup.

Thanks.

Opinions for Purchasing a new 4x5 Round Baler

lundi 16 avril 2018

Hello Everyone,

I am in need of advice, We currently own a JD 447 (4x4) Rd. Baler with a silage kit installed and are generally satisfied with the performance but we need more capacity and we will soon be selling it and need opinions on what would be the best possible choice in a 4x5 silage special machine. So I am asking what would be the best choice for dependability, low maintenance costs and certainly high capacity.......I have been satisfied with a JD baler but have heard a lot of good from many other brands on the market, so pls. feel free to give me your opinions as it would help to make the best possible choice on our purchase of another baler.....thanks for your time, sincerely.....lbfarmboy.

Opinions for Purchasing a new 4x5 Round Baler

Wait or not to wait on 1st cutting

Out alfalfa and alfalfa grass growth is very delayed this spring as is the case with many this spring.  If I wait til  the normal maturity, 10% bloom, first cutting will be late calendar wise,  making 2nd and 3rd cutting also late and may even miss 3rd on some fields.  So do I wait or cut 1st early maturity wise to get partially back on schedule?  All my hay is sold for horses and dairies in small squares.

Help with installing high stubble shoes on NH 7000 series discbine

samedi 14 avril 2018

Looking for some advice from anyone who has been there and done that.

I picked up a used NH7320 discbine at the end of the season last year.  I grow primarily orchard grass/timothy which likes a 4-5 inch stubble.  Over the winter I ordered a set of high stubble shoes to get the higher stubble height.

I went out last week to do the install.  Pretty darn easy on 5 of the 7 cutterbar modules.  But the outer two modules have me a bit stumped.  On the outer edge of the outer modules you can't get a socket on the 1/2" cap screw due to interference from the cutterbar support bracket bolts (these are those two bolts that have the grease zerk built into the cap).

About all I can get on these two outermost cap screws is an open ended wrench (can't even get the box end on the head).  I am concerned about rounding off the head.  I had to use an impact wrench to break the othe dozen cap screws free (and yes, I soaked them for several days in penetrating fluid first).

Looking for advice from anyone who has installed these high stubble shoes and if they had the same issue.  What did you do?

The obvious answer looks to be to back out the two cutterbar support bracket bolt that is in the way but the owner's manual doesn't address this anywhere.  If anyone has messed with these cutterbar support bracket bolts, anything I need to be aware of before I start monkeying with them?

John Deere Disk ID

I bought this at auction today mainly to take care of family gardens. It is a JD made in the mid to late 60's from what I was told. There is no id plate on it, and I've searched high and low on the net and can't even get close. Anyone know?

Belts slipping on JD 335

Well I just bought a JD 335 and decided to break some bales and roll them out to test out the baler. The baler works great until the roll gets to about 2 1/2’ diameter. That’s when the belts start slipping.
I first though the hydraulics were bleeding off but the gate is not opening at all. It rolls a super sized tight bale right to the 2 1/2’ mark.

Any idea on what’s causing this?

Mower predicament

I've got a 1209 moco that needs some work with the conditioning system. Both drive shafts need minor work and the conditioners are around 70%. I recently found a good deal on a Kuhn disc mower that needs roughly 1400 in repairs. I figured none the less if it won't work with for my operating I'll sell it and make money. What would be the best way for me to proceed? I just started last year making small squares for horse hay. I also have a tedder to help with drying, my main issue is I only have 4 days to cut and dry.

Bale Mover for small bales

vendredi 13 avril 2018

I have a NH Super 1048 and try as we may, we can’t get it to pick up shorter square bales. The bales end up averaging 98 lbs. Everyone involve would like to get that number down to 75-80 lbs. Somewhere in Hayrakj I ran across a comment that 1048s were notorious for only picking up longer bales. What model would be a good alternative? We average 3500 bales per year.

Raising the Price - How’d That Go Over?

The thread on hay discounting got me thinking, what about the flip side - raising the price.

When have you raised the price of your hay, year over year (or for any other reason), why, how’d that go over with your repeat customers and sales potential with new customers?

Case 5100 Grass Box Tubes

Hi there, I looking to hear what other alfalfa/hay growers with case 5100 style drills have done with the small box seed tubes.

I like the drill and mine is in good shape but the small seed tubes seem to clog and give me grief from time to time. I'm thinking of just removing them and letting the alfalfa seed fall where it may.

I pull a spike tooth packer behind the drill as well.

Thanks for any info.

What size Winch

So I am going to pick up a winch for my X900. I am also going to pick up a receiver tray so it can be moved from the front to the back if needed, as well as moved over to my 4000lb tractor.

In looking at winches, you have the 5000lb which way 40lbs or the 12000lb which way 80lbs. We don't use the winch for much more than getting unstuck, if it was real bad (down a ravine) we would have friends and neighbors who would be by our side with much bigger gear like dozers and such.

So is 5000lbs enough? The only HD thing I could think of is putting it on the bumper of my truck (a very heavy diesel) and getting it unstuck but honestly I have never been stuck in it, knock wood.

The other factor is my wife, I think the 80lb winch would be too heavy for her to move around if I am not in town.

Looking at some feeders. This is a very casual deal with a neighbor so we're not going to bother trying to find a scale and I try to keep an eye on prices but neither of us are experts on a fair price. Here's a pic of one of them. Tougher to tell in a picture without anything to reference it but you think 400lbs? The all black ones are probably 100lbs bigger. He's thinking $550-650 on a price.

Feeder cattle at auction are 1-1.20 here. Craigslist ads seem to be around 1.5-1.70. I have some permanent cows at my place so I'm not interested in bringing home auction cattle. I'm hoping to find someone I know that I can occasionally add a steer to my group from.

Spraying Roundup Ready Alfalfa

Hello,

I am new to roundup ready alfalfa this year.  I have a 16 acre field in northern NV that is irrigated via flood irrigation.  It has a new stand of RR alfalfa that was planted last spring.  2 cuttings were taken off of it last year.  I just bought this field this past winter.

This year the alfalfa looks very good.  However there is quite a bit of mustard weed (aka...flixweed) growing.  I would like to spray it out.  The alfalfa is just beginning to grow and I see everyone else spraying so I think the time is right.

My question is what mix / ration do most people use on the RR alfalfa?  I have read anywhere from 28 to 44 oz of roundup per acre.  I am trying to figure out how many gallons of water to add to that.  I have a 26 gallon boom sprayer that pull behind my JD gator.

My going in gameplan is going to be to use 35 oz of big n tuff, 13 gallons of water, 6 ounces of surfactant and 16 ounces of ammonium sulfate per acre (double all that to mix a tank of spray).  If anyone has experience spraying RR alfalfa I would really like to hear if you think I am on the right track or if my mix sounds off.

I just assume Big N' Tuff is ok to spray since it's label says it can be utilized on RR alfalfa.  If that is incorrect please let me know.

Thank you in advance for all the advice.

Thank you,

Andrew

Testing 2755 Hi Lo circuit

IMG_2857.JPG Trying to determine wether the hi lo clutch or the main clutch is slipping. Tested the 3 ports on the valve body and I got 150 psi at idle at the marked ports. I didn't know which port was what circuit until I tested them .P1.   Hi and.  PTO . Dose that look correct. I have no service manual and can find nothing on the net except hi clutch is applied with oil psi and Lo is applied by spring.

I get slippage in 7 th gear and get out of the throttle or downshift right away. So I don't wait till I can smell clutch.

By the way the JD dealer put a new flywheel/clutch assy. and release brg. in 354 hrs. ago in 2014. This time last year they went back in and replaced the release brg. again[Leaking]. They checked the clutch and it was ok.  Not a happy camper.

Not sure if the guy that posted the want ad looking for someone to till his garden is off his rocker. His idea of a reasonable rate is $30 for a half hour job (his opinion of how long it should take) to till 16x20. Plus he dictates the use of only a rear tine tiller. Then the guy named Russ apparently exhibited some of the scam characteristics but I can't reasonably tell because somehow a neighbor's garden was added to the quote. Either way $200 per garden doesn't seem too bad priced.

The ad poster insinuates that Russ was ripping him/her off the Clinton/Obama way. I think the ad poster is also trying to rip someone off the 'Clinton/Obama way' lol. The job in my opinion is at least $31.

Crap Sums it Up

Hello again.

Time for guidance from the forum.

Purchased my RTV900 from an eBay dealer, with a 100% feedback ranking, however my purchase was not through eBay. I have purchased from this seller previously without any issues.

He admitted that he does not normally sell RTVs. He took it in trade, he had no history on the rig.

During the test drive the RTV power seemed to match my BX2350, with the same engine series. The only thing that grabbed my attention was the chirp in 4wd. When I pointed out the chirp he dropped the price $500, supposedly what he had in the RTV.

Went it arrived I gave it the once over and found the radiator dry and the recovery tank full of rusty water. Too bad I did not pay more attention to the coolant system, the temp gauge was not throwing any red flags during the test drive so I had no reason to investigate the cooling system.

OK so the temp gauge sending unit was disconnected, who would do that?

Replaced the radiator, hoses thermostat and the cracked thermostat housing. Confirmed the radiator fan was operating and made certain the temp gauge was functioning. Took several test drives up and down the hills in various gears. The temp gauge was reading about 1/3 scale, about what my BX reads. Confirmed the antifreeze level was OK, not using oil etc. BTW the temps that day were in the high 40s. Thought all was well.

Fast forward to a 70 degree day and decided to straighten out the bend in the brush guard. With the aid of a stout tree and chain mission accomplished, but noticed the temp gauge was approaching the red zone. Popped up the seat, the recovery tank is right at full and the radiator fan is running. Guess that's a good thing.

Allowed the RTV to cool down and then headed up the hill to fetch the mail, but in route I see the temp gauge is nearly pegged.

Drifted back down the hill, lift the seat and the recovery tank is empty. This cannot be good.

With the engine stone cold it started, but when I recharged the coolant system it would not start.

Today I pulled the head and found the head gasket separated. The cylinder bores are pristine but when I cleaned the engine deck a hairline crack appeared. See attached.

Looks like the engine is junk, I doubt it would have any core value like this.
What to do next?

Piper sudangrass

I’m thinking of trying to plant piper sudangrass this year in place of pearl millet. We usually only plant about 5 acres of summer annuals to give a boost in our hay production.

In the past the pearl millet has always given lots of volume but it never fails that we get a rain right before it’s ready to cut. Seems like it always get a little to over mature on us due to weather.

I’ve read that piper sudangrass is a little easier to get dry and has a better feed quality. I first looked at sorghum sudan’s but in our humid weather I don’t think I could ever get it dry enough to bale. Generally when we cut millet with a cutter conditioner it takes 4-5 days before it’s ready to bale.

For those of you who have grown piper sudan what attributes and drawbacks does it have vs pearl millet? Is it really easier to dry down than millet? Did it have good regrowth? Feed value?

Thanks

What to do?

With spring spray season fastly approaching I'm at that head scratching stage again. I spray mainly gravel access roads smack in the middle of either corn or beans so products like pramatol are out of the question, Esplanada would be great except for the amount I have to handle and cost is just stupid. My main problem is resistant water hemp and in my area if you don't get it pre then you don't get it at all and I don't have the advantage of canopy, it's also very hard to sell the client to spray with no weeds present. should spray in late April or early May depending on weather but more then likely I won't be allowed till June. This year I'm going with a new burn down called Elevore which will get the marestail and combined with either Duel which has a better residual or a dicamda product which is a better water hemp product but short on residual. The other problem I have is growing stages as It's spread out over 150sqmi. Always looking for suggestions and I realize that some of you still get by with Gly on water hemp, I don't.

When to plant alfalfa? southern Michigan.

vendredi 6 avril 2018

Have a former crop field that I'd like to put straight alfalfa on. It was disced some in the fall, will need to be disced some more before being planted on. I thought I had some time to get this done but looking it up I might want to get it seeded sooner? My guess is to do it as soon as the soil isn't too sloppy for the tractor and disc. I'd like to do an early summer/spring planting instead of a late summer/fall planting so the field doesn't become a weed crop. I did google it a bit and Michigan State usually has a ton of info for this sort of thing but I didn't come up with much.

Would this spreader do a good job with dry bagged nitrogen?

I have to find more ways to do things myself. I decided to use compost to fertilize my hay lands with good results.
However, I have a few parcels that are difficult to access and, with this winter, didn't freeze enough to allow compost spreading without risk of a lot of ruts.
So I have a salt spreader, it holds like 800lbs or salt or sand. It has a horizontal auger inside and a typical spinner hanging off the bottom. For years I have wanted to try it to spread fertilizer. Worried about making a mess, improper application rates, etc.
I've attached a picture. Let me know what you think. Also any tips appreciated!!!

Pinwheel Rake Angle?

After using a corner of one of my better fields as a logging deck, I now find the area teeming with sticks; wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to many to move by hand. So my idea is to build a stick rake to rake all up the sticks that remain before the grass starts growing. I got a very short window of time to do this.

Since I cannot buy a stick rake the size I need, I figure I will just have to build one. It seems easy enough and I got most of the steel kicking around already. But despite internet searches I cannot deduce what the right angle is for a pinwheel rake. I assume it is 45 degrees, but assume it could vary too. I need to know the length of steel I need to make what I hope will be an 8 foot windrow.

I am building a smaller version of this:

Canadian Thistle in Alfalfa/Grass

jeudi 5 avril 2018

I have a field that has a good stand of alfalfa and orchard grass, with one corner that has a steadily increasing patch of canadian thistle (thanks to a neighbors unkept burn pile near the fencerow).  Overall, the area of thistle covers about 1/2 acre, enough to be a real pain and lead to some frustrating loss.  Ideally, I would like to be able to find a product to spray this area to eliminate the thistle, but not lose the alfalfa/grass stand that we have.

So, was looking for some recommendations on herbicide options and timing of application.  I know herbicides that fit my criteria will be limited, but what have you used with success in the past?  From reading older posts and some university studies, seems like Pursuit may be an option, but control of thistle is not the greatest.  Appreciate any thoughts and recommendations anyone has.

Downside to High Stubble Height

mercredi 4 avril 2018

Looking over my Krone mower conditioner and pondering stubble height.

We8ve been mowing with my old Hesston at 5 inches and like it for two reasons. One is regrowth for a potential 2nd cutting and the other is to stand the hay off the ground a bit higher for drying.

What I don’t like is that when tedding, raking and baling, the tines can tear off green grass/stubble which makes me nervous about the drydown with this added-in. The second thing is setting the tires not to comb so deep into the stubble so as not to gather the green, however, a good portion of the tedded and raked hay finds itself down into the stubble and left behind costing me $$$’s, not to mention the thick 2ish inched I could be harvesting - again potential $$$’s.

In as much as timothy (which we are growing) seems to go dormant with the summer heat, unless rain and cooler temps prevail, a second cutting can be out of the question. The risk is you got a few inches more growth, not worth the effort and it goes dormant with the heat - leaving $$$’s on the field.

One of the adjustments we made last year was overseeding our Timothy with and without scratching the ground. The scratched ground is working out great from over seeding and we might continue that every year to keep our stand from thinning out.

Soooooo.....

I’m thinking about setting this Krone for a 3 inch cut, max the first cutting with the expectation of NOT combing in green stubble or loosing hay in high stubble either. If I loose some Timothy due to the lower cut, we’re over seeding in the fall anyway.

Rambling a bit, thinking out loud.

What is your downside to a higher stubble cut in grass hay?

Thanks!
Bill

Reel Tedders, any good?

Right now I don't have any tedder at all. I can rent a 4 wheel tedder or buy one, but have seen a few of the Pequea reel tedders for sale locally and reasonably. This year I'll be doing 40 acres of hay, but in the future it will be down to about 10 with the rest in crop rotation. From videos I see, it looks like these types pretty much just lift up the windrow and lay it back down. I see it as something I could even do after raking if it was drying fast enough without having to re-rake, is that accurate? It would seem like a handy tool if there was more moisture than I was expecting, where as the wheel tedders I'd think do a better job on planned fluffing prior to raking. Is my head straight on that? Anything you like/dislike about one style vs the other?

What to spray after sprigging

mardi 3 avril 2018

I’ll be sprigging a 50 ac field with Jiggs Bermuda in the next week or so depending on the weather. I burned it down last fall with 5qts /ac of gly. Last week I broke it deep with offset disc, then tandem. Then got 8” of rain!
It caused a few washes but not bad. I’ll drag it as soon as it dries out enough.
I’ve sprayed diuron in the past day after planting, but haven’t planted anything in quite a while. Just wondering what is out there and what y’all spray right after springing?

Inline Baler for Timothy hay

We're wanting to add a baler this year, especially for our timothy.  Jeff has wanted to try an inline and I've been researching everything I can find.  Not a lot of them run around here so getting first hand experience recommendations is tough.

Here are the models that I've been looking at:  Hesston 4590; New Idea 7215; Agco 7115; Case 8545; Challenger SB36/1840; MF 1839; MF 1840

Jeff was talking with someone that said the MF1840's new auger design would be the only one that wouldn't give problems with timothy.  He had problems with a MF1839 balling up in from of the pickup.  This was from an individual baling straw and thought the long stem would be similar.  This wasn't anyone selling a baler so there was no financial incentive on his part.

Our JD348 is our "standard" and whatever running with it has meet or exceed its abilities.  We can go with another 348 and avoid the learning curve.

Since I'll be the one operating the newcomer, I need all the help I can get.  Apparently since Jeff got the sp bale wagon I get to choose me a baler.

Fly Control

lundi 2 avril 2018

Y'all are talking about snow and I'm already working cattle. I hauled a load to the processor this morning and came back to check the herd I removed them from and counted nearly 60 flies per face. It's April and I had to make the decision to already put fly tags in. I like to hold out to May/June to get better coverage into fall. Looks like I will have to re-work them them with fresh tags to cover September/October.

I use a rotating fly tag regimen that alters the active ingredient to try preventing resistance. This year I'm back to Corathon, good stuff and judging by fly numbers, a good year to be back with them. I also use an IGR feed through mineral with Altosid.

What are your modes of action this year?

Ryegrass hay

So we planted 20 acres of ryegrass to keep a newly leveled field from washing this last fall. It is tetraploid(sp?) And this field had chicken manure spred on it the past 2 years and kept disced year round for the past 2 years. (Actually its a young pecan orchard it took that long to kill fhe coastal bermuda). Anyways we put another 70 units of nitrogen down about 2 months ago. So we had it custom cut and baled. It was cut 2 weeks ago on a tuesday with a 14 foot john deere swather with flail. That thursday he raked 3 swathes into one and on saturday he baled it. It seemed way too wet on friday evening when I last saw it. Well i guess he baled it loose so it was breathe more and now fhe bales are drooping and getting hot. Bales are still in the field. Put a thermometer in a few of them and read 175 on most and some at 195. What are yalls thoughts on this hay and thoughts on how it should have been preped for baling. Also ground was dry and humitiy was pretty low first few days and it was windy, no rain a few morning dews that were gone by no later than 10am.

Flowers in my Field

I have about 10 acres that has pretty good coverage of Coastal  and I usually Make small square Bales.

This year I have a big crop of Indian Paintbrush. I've read where the flowers are edible but the stems are not.

What should I do with this Field? I was think about going ahead and mowing the flowers but then what ?

It is usually the middle of May before the coastal is ready to bale.

Any help will be appreciated.

Vermeer baler monitor

Bought a used vermeer rancher 665. Got it thursday and looked at the monitor to it closer and it has on the bottom of it written in the id area model number 605sm and serial number does not match. Contacted dealer but have not heard back from them yet. On the monitor it also says software number and such. Can you move a monitor from baler to baler? Monitor shows 2300bales total and the customer that traded in the baler said it has 1500 bales which from the looks of it seems like it has low bale count. What are yalls thoughts?

Foxtail Millet.

dimanche 1 avril 2018

I was looking through the seed catalog the other night and German Foxtail millet caught my eye. I'm considering planting 10-15 acres this year to see what happens. Anyone fed this to their own cattle? How did they like it? Preform well on it? I understand this is a one time cut, however I do like to play around with out of the norm stuff realizing sometimes you win sometimes you loose. I am going to plow this patch after the burn down does it's thing to get ready for fall ryegrass and just thought I would put a short rotation crop in,

3 pt Disc Mower Hydraulic Lift

I use a New Idea 5407. After mowing for a couple of hours when raised to lift the bar does not fully lift.

It only has one hydraulic line. I bled off the cylinder by opening the top line fitting and hydraulic oil came out. Bar lifted to normal transport position. I lift the cutter bar when I make my corners. After mowing I have to continually bleed the cylinder.

I am thinking that the seals are bypassing.

Would 2 hydraulic lines help but take away the float?

Possibly just a low grade cylinder?

Thanks,
