Curious as to what everyone uses as their best practice for starting new OG stands (or any type of similar grass for that matter). I've always planted a nurse crop of oats if planted in the spring, or wheat, rye or barley if planted in the fall. But, seems many on here plant grass by itself and must get along great without the nurse crop.
Any tips or strong thoughts one way or the other? Thinking about trying to plant just some straight grass this fall into wheat stubble and skip the nurse crop. Can I expect a "normal" yield of OG next year if I plant straight grass this fall (i.e. a first cut and at least one later cut) assuming average rain fall and decent fertilization?
Also, anyone have any experience with Tekapo or Treposno varieties? My local coop carries these now and supposed to be better for grazing, heat tolerance and rust issues. Just looking for real world opinions.
Thanks!
