Electric fencing for goats?
Hey everyone!
I'm looking to start getting some goats on my plot of land. A lot of my friends and people in town have told me to get an electric fence of some sort, which I agree with...
I have a friend who works at ElectroBraid and can possibly give me a good discount on their products. The only thing is, I can only see that they have it marketed towards "horses." http://ift.tt/21xtFCT
Would it be a bad idea for me to get this kind of fencing? I'm new to this and I don't want to harm any animals.
Thank you.

8300 Drill
Here is a really nice JD8300 drill on 6" spacing which is hard to find. It has a small seed box on the front and also a "Brome" seed box on the rear...which I have never seen before....live and learn. If someone in the North country is looking for a drill to use on their haylands, this one would be hard to beat. Just listed today.

Can someone tell me what kind of grass this is?
Driving yesterday down 287, headed south from Amarillo Texas and saw field after field of this beautiful emerald green grass. I'm sure its quite common but I'm newly interested in grass and hay and thought sure there would be no better place to ask than this forum.
The picture doesn't really do it justice, the green was so dark and deep, and so surprising to see so much green in February!
Can someone tell me what kind of grass this is?

Vermeer 504 M Classic
Okay, so the long and short of the story is that i'm in the process of upgrading some hay equipment. Just bought a small square baler and have now turned my focus to a round baler upgrade. Had originally thought about going new but after pricing some new hollands and vermeers I feel a little sick on my stomach... I am baling around 350 round bales a year, give or take, currently using a new holland 634 hooked to a Case JX1080U. My question is I found a vermeer 504M classic for sale at a dealer, his price is 18500.00, claims to only have about 2500 rolls through it. Have not gone to look at it due to it being over an hour away and before I commit to the drive I am wanting some opinions... Is that a decent price? Will my 80 HP case pull it okay? Is that a decent machine? What is the good the bad and the ugly? What do I need to look for or think about before I pull the trigger???
Thanks again for the help.

For some of you other southern MN guys...
What kind of offer would you put in?
I replied asking how long has it been in hayground, and what has the typical yield been?
What other questions should I be asking?
Not sure what good hayground goes for around here. I might have to upgrade my baler....and rake....

I have a bottle-fed heifer that's 12-13 months old. She was in dad's pasture with two of my steers (and about 150 head of sheep); 22 days ago, she got out and went gallivanting. Found her about 4 days later in the neighbor's pasture which is about 3 miles away. I decided to take her to my pasture; when I kicked her out of the stock trailer, my heifer rode her briefly---so she was in heat for the first time.
Today, I got home from work and she was not here; she had last been seen here about 10 am. I located her 6-7 miles away at a neighbor's.
Is she too young to breed to a low birth-weight bull?
If she is too young to breed, is there anything I can do besides put a yoke on her to keep her in?
I can't have her getting out every time she comes in heat. If it matters, the heifer is a brown swiss
I've got lucky twice now with finding her back, but my luck can't hold forever.

Vermeer rebel 5420 bale count
samedi 27 février 2016
Hey, long time onlooker here with a question. This winter I bought a rebel 5420 from a dealership in tn, was told it had 1000 bales on it, but I did not have them hook up the monitor to verify it, the belts/pickup and overall condition looked like it has not had much hay thru it. Got around tonight to wiring it up to my tractor and the monitor is saying 3104 bales! How would you start the conversation with the dealer? I know it was not my best move to take their word for it but I thought at a Vermeer dealer I would get a straight answer. I just know that's the first question that is asked and the difference of 2k bales on an economy baler would have changed my offer a good little bit.

Dust in the Hay - Question
I realize that if you're hay sets to long on the ground, is not conditioned and/or tedded - moved around in some way after cutting, mold can begin to form.
But how quickly can dust from hay setting in the windrow form? What is the rule of thumb/time frame that tells you are asking for trouble?
A couple of years ago, I had an equipment failure and couldn't bale a bit of hay. It got rained on repeatedly and probably took 10 days to get up. I kept turning it to keep it aerated and drying out from the rain until I could bale. Finally when I got it up, it was dry, but as bleached as straw. It also had a GREAT fresh baled hay smell. I was very surprised at this. It absolutely didn't show any signs of dust. Still I sold it as "goat" hay. The buyers were delighted with the quality of the hay, inspite of everything. Made me think I should have asked more $ for it - LOL!
However, last year I baled a small piece of hay field, after work during the week. Time was limited to about an hour or so and baled on two consecutive days. The 50 or so bales I made on the first day had dust - weeks later. I microwaved a hay sample and was at 17-18 ish moisture and outwardly the hay looked and felt OK. Second day, baled the same amount and it was perfect. Didn't take a humidity reading in it since it had a day longer to dry. Neither day's hay get any dew as I quit before it could form.
I attribute the first day's hay being somewhat dusty to residual stem moisture. None of the hay was conditioned, but all was tedded.
So to my original question, has anyone experienced dust from hay just setting in the windrow?
I'm thinking hay that is simply baled with to high moisture, or parts of the hay content with to high moisture, like stems or legumes cause dust after baled up and setting in the barn for several weeks vs anything going on in the windrow.
I'm talking square bales. What's you're experience?
Just curious.
Thanks,
Bill

Help Lift Link Setting - Deere 468 Square Baler
I recently bought a late model 468 baler that is missing knots too often and I'm trying to make certain the under-bale twine and over-bale twine are laying down nicely in the twine holder for knotting. The problem is the needle frame to housing distance. The manual says 3/4"-1" but even with the link adjusted all the way, it's double that. When I first got the baler, it wasn't knotting at all so, Right or wrong, I drilled a second hole in the link to shorten it and bring the measurement into specs. I checked everything else too and made adjustments here and there and it starting knotting but inconsistently (wrapping around the bale hook roller) so I'm back checking things but this time with the goal to get the two twines laying nicely in the twine holder.
In the original hole, I adjusted the link as short as possible and was 3" from the needle frame to the baler frame, which is actually 3 times the acceptable limit according to the manual. In this position, the needles extend through the knotter so the needle tip is about 1/2" above the knotter where the twine holder adjustment bolt is housed (the top of the knotter assembly at the nearest point to the needles). I know the lift link has been messed with because the castle nut holding the top of the lift link is missing a cotter pin.
With the lift link in the makeshift hole to shorten it and bring it into specs, the needles extend about the knotter assy. by about 3-4" and the baler is out of timing by about 3-4" (short of the slot on the bale case), so I obviously need to have it timed based on how far the needle extends up through the knotter.
I think the best thing If somebody has a clamp type lift link, could you measure it?
And also, can someone tell me how far your needle extend thru the knotter at the maximum? I'm thinking that the most important thing because it affects how the twine would lay in the twine disc differently and would have impact on the timing of everything.
I'm also having a problem adjusting the needles so they lightly push against the side of the knotter. Anybody else have this problem? They are new needles, but they press too hard in every position. The best I can do is move them to the left as much as possible but they are still too much pressure.

Hello Folks,
I am looking at a 5070 Hayliner to run with my 575 NH. The 575 has a bale case extension. I will be using a 1/4 turn chute on both and picking up bales with stack wagon. Do I need a bale case extension on the 5070 Hayliner? Uniform bale length is critical with stack wagons.

Center pivot discbines- Deere 835 MOCO
Going into my 4th season, I am considering making changes.
I really want an SP or a front mount mower, but I dont see it happening for many reasons I wont bore us with. Maybe in 3-5 years.
SO, I'm thinking about "improving" my discbine situation from a NH 7230 side pull PT discbine to a center pivot.
Have my eyes on a Deere 835 MOCO. Also want to go to a flails machine this time. I dont make "show quality" hay, I like the aggressive conditioning better and they're cheaper up front. Also, no rolls to wear out.
I would also pick up an extra foot of width and, perhaps best of all, be able to cut on BOTH sides of tractor.
The 835 is a perfect size for me on my roads & gates. I won't be buying a new one. Plan is to sell NH 7230 and slide "sideways" into an 835 of similar, or possibly higher value.
Will I like the flails if I want faster dry down for average quality hay? Any good/bad feedback on 835 MOCO?
Thanks for reading.

John Deere 328 Sq Baler Trouble
jeudi 25 février 2016
Okay, so I recently bought a John Deere 328 Square Baler. Had it run through a dealership shop and was told everything was "good to go"... Brought it home today and set up to do some re baling of rounds into squares. Had my help all lined up and ready to go and it was an absolute nightmare... This thing is missing more bales then its baling.... Gobs of string rapping up around the knotters, it would bale two bales and that would be all she wrote, why would it be doing that? Dealer put 9000 thistle twine in it, from what I see that should be right??? After fooling with this thing for 2 plus hours I then started noticing a burning smell coming from the main drive line where it hooks in passing the slip clutch disk.... Any thoughts??? I am at an udder loss now, really hope I didn't buy a turd but I am wondering....
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Kind of a mike10 question. When do you say its time for new sledge gears? My oldest baler has 17,000 some bales on it, much of them cornstalks. Sledge gears are obviously worn, but how much is too much? I do not want to have a gear failure during stalk baling season!

Broadcasting Teff
Has anyone had any luck broadcasting Teff seed with a 3pt spinner spreader?
I have about 15 acres in cereal rye I plan on cutting for straw (hopefully) and I was planning on working the land with a disc to bury the residue/stubble then cultipack it till its firm. Then I was going to broadcast the seed with the spreader and cultipack again.
I figure I'll have to increase the seed rate a bit to compensate for the broadcasting method but I believe the grain drill cannot be set low enough to get the desired rate.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my background is in tobacco/row crops and this is my first experience with teff and pre-cut rye.
Thanks,

Seeding Rates?
Hey, I'm new to this forum and new to farming. I have about 45 acres of hay fields that need to be seeded. I'm leaving the current stand of hay and using a no till drill. The current mix is orchard grass, fescue, white clove, and some johnsongrass. It only made about 180 5x5 bales last year about 1000lbs each. The fields have been tested and the lime and fertilizer need have been applied. I'm wanting to put a mixture of fescue 50%, orchard 30% , timothy 15%, and ladino 5%. Money is in short supply, so what would be the minimum rate lbs/arce of each. Fields have excellent soil.

NH 1425 self-propelled baler rear axle removal
I'm the 2nd owner of a 1978 NH 1425 that the 1st owner estimates has baled a million bales already. The rear axle seals are shot and gear lube has saturated the brake shoes rendering them useless. I'm trying to replace the rear axle oil seals. This machine has a final drive reduction gearbox at the outer end of each rear axle. Thus the actual axle is a very short thing supported by a pair of tapered roller bearings seated in the massive cast iron reduction gear housing. Here's a photo of the overall situation (wheel removed:
On the back side of the reduction gear housing there is a stamped metal dust cap (like you find on the outside of a typical wheel hub). I removed the cap and then removed the castellated nut from the axle shaft. Here's what that looks like now:
Next I removed all the bolts that hold the two halves of the reduction gear housing together and, using a chisel sharpened to an acute angle, separated the two halves...barely. For sure the two halves are broken loose from each other but I can't get them to actually move apart from each other.
My current theory is that the inner race of the inner tapered roller bearing (visible in the photo above) is stuck on the axle shaft and therefore not allowing the axle and big gear and everything else to slide out. I tried beating on the inner end of the axle with a 4lb sledge (protecting the axle end with the nut and a block of Al) but I can't really get a good swing at it and it didn't budge.
It strikes me as odd that this bearing is stuck on the shaft. That would seem to defeat the purpose of having opposing tapered roller bearings and a castellated nut for adjusting the play in the bearings.
If anybody out there has been through this before and can shed any light, I would be most appreciative....!!
Scott

Timothy Hay - Qualities PDF????
I have a potential horse hay customer for this summer and they are asking for info regarding some of the hay I'm growing this summer - primarily Timothy and Teff, as well as hay preservative applied, i.e. buffered propionic acid.
I can find plenty of University papers on the value of Teff grass and benefits of acid - but what I'm finding with regard to Timothy is generally - info on growing it. The papers are more for the farmer IMHO than the consumer.
Anyone have a link to a PDF online regarding the virtues of Timothy hay they would be willing to share?
I'm still searching - but thought I'd ping you folks too.

Early application of liquid fertilizer and weed killer - Question?
I have a question for you veteran hay guys/gals or anyone with experience in the early application of liquid fertilizer. I live in central Texas have about 70 acres of coastal Bermuda that was sprigged two years ago. 2016 will be it's third growing season. I have about 75% coverage at this point and have common winter weeds (mainly thistle, broad leaf/mustard, and henbit) along with rye grass coming up in the bare spots and a few mixed in the thinner areas. I have a guy that does chemical spraying that is suggesting to spray Atrazine and Ally to clean the weeds / rye grass and also wanting to apply tank mixed liquid fertilizer at 300 lbs. per acre. My standing coastal is about 10-12" right now but of course brown/dormant. I did not shred it at the end of summer / early fall due the lack of rain and also hoping to minimize the winter weed growth. My question is this, will applying the fertilizer at that rate this early while the ground is still below 70 degrees and we will likely have another freeze or two before spring be beneficial to do. I know we will obviously need rain on it to get it in the ground but will the cold ground and dormant grass respond to the benefit of fertilizer this early in the year to have a productive spring? I ask this due to the fertilizer being the biggest cost of the spraying but I do like the idea of getting it all done in one shot.
Thanks in advance and I will look forward to your answers.

First time owned by a calf
Hello everyone, and thank you for letting me join this group. A little about us...we have a tiny Homestead, 7 acres, where we raise poultry for eggs and meat, Geese for "crowd control" American Guinea hogs for meat and sale, 2 miniature goats (a buck and a doe for milking) , one Shetland ewe for wool....and now...a just weaned bottle calf for breeding and milking much later. This is the first cow I have been owned by, and she has won my heart. I am starting her on leading training and she is doing fairly well. She doesn't struggle against the lead. I have her in the same "yard" as the Ewe, an area about 65 x 120 ft., well drained, great grassy pasture. One of my questions...when and what will she need as far as shots? Will it be OK to raise her with my Ewe? The person I bought her from kept feed in front of her 24/7 Is this what I need to do as well? Thank you in advance for any and all help in answering my questions. I love my little Daisy Mae, and want her to be healthy and happy.

Rebaleing large squares into small bales
lundi 22 février 2016
We moved a million bales of straw last year. Now we are looking at different methods of rebaleing, for a number of reasons. It would be nice to have a airport runway to use. My son feels the Simpco bale separator looks attractive. I am sold on the Massey Hesston 1840 baler. Figure baler at 25, tractor at 35, and Simpco at 20 for a stationary operation. Now we hear to work correctly the Simpco should have an auxilliary 80 hp engine to operate the hydraulics, and that is another 30. I want it shaken apart and fluffed, not shredded. I'm thinking a double beater manure spreader, or one of those silo loaders, or even some means of spinning and applying air pressure. It seems like manufacturers do not spec for particular jobs. Very few make a grapple that fits a trailer, which is 99 inches inside. Has anyone got a system in operation that can refer anything, or even allow me to visit to check out the operation? Thank You

bale accumulator questions
I have baled hay sm squares and 4x5 rounds for many years. I am trying a Khun's 1036F 10 bale flat accumulator for the first time this year. We have a NH 5070 hayliner, we ted with a 6 basket, we have two rotary rakes one 9' one 11' and cut with a 10' diskbine,We have 1 24', 4 20' and 3 22' racks. Most of our fields are small odd shaped with some small hills. What is the best way to rake double 9' or single 11' windrow? How fast can you load 120 to 150 bales on a rack after you get good at it? About how many bales per hour can I expect to bale with this system after it is working properly? Plan on baling with a JD 6420 with the power quad or would a JD 7400 with the power quad be better? Welger AP630 & AP71 parts compatibility
I have two Welger AP71 conventional balers.
I've been offered a Welger AP630 cheap. We haven't agreed a price yet, but the baler is badly rusted and is probably not suitable for repair, good for parts only.
My question is, how many parts on AP630 are likely to fit my AP71 ?
Parts that I'm particularly interested in are :
knotters
needles
PTO shaft
pick up tines
possibly the stuffer forks
wheels
Only a short list, I suspect that nearly nothing else will fit as they are quite different balers.
The AP71 is mostly chain drive where as the AP630 has no chains at all, everything is shaft drive.
The AP630 is about 140 miles away so it's going to be a big effort to get the whole thing back home.
Thank you

This land is underwater all spring and likely produces 2-4 tons of Timothy per acre in an average summer.
It is on an island that is about a 10 mile drive from him, 20 miles for me.
I currently hay about 120 acres total down a bit from a couple of years ago. All but 15 acres is small squares. He currently hays about 80 acres as small square and round bales another 20 or so.
I have done the math and I can't scale my operation up as is and pick up the ground unless I quit my day job which isn't happening.
I wish a bale baron was a bit cheaper or employees easier to find!

overseeding clover or alfalfa into oat field
Hey everybody,
This is my first post here. I am in Eastern Va near the Chesapeake Bay. A friend of mine has about 30 acres of nice oat hay coming along and he asked me to help him overseed it with some clover. We are considering planting some alfalfa in some of the fields. I have done this with success on my own land with just a broadcast spreader and an old rotary hoe but that oat field was thin. This oat field is THICK and the plants are about 2 inches high. I am thinking we may need to use his no till drill (but he has no small seedbox). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Farm web sites
I have been looking at some of your web sites. They seem very interesting. All the way fro simple to complex. I have been thinking about adding one to my operation. Can anyone here tell me if you feel they helped your sales? I have also been wondering about price and maintaining it. I have enough tech savvy to turn my computer on. Any ideas where to look for someone to set up and take care of one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

JD 4020 side console - difference for 3rd remote? ISO style any good?
I'm looking at getting overhauled remotes for my late model 4020 that has all three remotes (later side-console style). The ones that are on there leak, both externally and internally, and I'm thinking it will be easier and probably about the same cost to just swap on some of the re-manufactured valves I have found online.
In my searching around, I've discovered that there is actually a part number difference for the 3rd remote, but I can't tell what the actual differences are. Can anyone here fill me in? Is there any way to tell from the outside which is the 3rd valve? I know I've had them off the back before and I'm not sure I put them all in the same spot when I reinstalled them.
Also, the ISO style rebuilt valves are the same price as the original JD style. Is there any difference in actual performance between the two? Not having to worry about the adapter tips would be nice, but I've already got them, so it's not a big deal either way.
Thanks, Josh

Top 3 heavy duty disc manufactures for pasture 14 or 16
Well, I jacked up my old disc on a hidden tree stump, where it's time to look for a new one. I'm looking for a heavy duty disc where I can go on pasture and turn my black clay gumbo into mini clay gumbo pieces and then finish it off with my harrow.
I'm looking for recommendations on a 14 or 16 foot disc that will do the job of breaking up and finishing as well and then top it off with my chain harrow... Kuhn? Hay King? Others?
Any guidance will be appreciated!!!
Be safe and best to you all!!

Low Hay Supplies in Parts of the Midwest?
Anyone notice a shortage of hay, particularly alfalfa, in the Midwest? We have alfalfa and alfalfa-grass mix hay. We have been moving the mixed hay but very little of the alfalfa up until about a couple of weeks ago and then all of a sudden we're getting calls for alfalfa. Our area didn't get hit as hard as others last spring/summer with heavy rains and we produced some good hay but it wasn't anything premium. I can hear the desperation in some of the folks' voices when they call inquiring about alfalfa small squares. Apparently, they assumed they could find their perfect hay all winter long and not plan ahead. The horsey people sometimes get on my nerves because they are wanting premium hay for bargain prices. I usually tell them that they need to come and look over the hay in person to see if it would be suitable for their needs. I was just curious if any other producers in the Midwest are experiencing an increase inquiries/sales for hay. It may just be the time of the year when the customer is running low and looking to have enough to ride them through the next season. Just trying to figure out if this is a trend or a blip on the radar because some people insist there is no hay shortage and others state there is.

NH 499 haybine
I was really thinking about taking the plunge into a disc mower conditioner but have came across a lightly used NH 499 haybine for just a little bit more than what I sold my side pull for. I don't know much about a 499.....can anyone tell me some of the ins and outs of the machine and if they had any problems?
The particular machine machine I'm looking at has a 1000 rpm pto pump which isn't too big of a deal for me even though nothing else I have is 1000 rpm because I can put it on a tractor that isn't used for much other pto work. The trouble is that resell value around here would be seriously hurt because almost nobody has equipment that runs on a 1000 rpm pto. Does anyone know how feasible it would be to switch it to 540? I was thinking since it a pto pump all I might have to change would be the pump itself?

Re seeding hay
Hi all, I am new to this forum. I am starting to farm in ontario, This will be my second year. I am renting another 30 acres but I cannot cash crop it so I will be haying it. It was in hay then it has sat idle for a few years so its weedy and I doubt it can be hayed. I am thinking plow it and disc it a bunch of times. I want to plant a mix of alfalfa and timothy to sell in small squares. I wont be able to do it for the spring time so I am planning on preparing it in June and seeding near the end of July. I have soil sampled and will be applying at least 200 pounds of 6-24-24 or more depending on my budget.
I just wanted others opinions on what to do, keep in mind the owner would rather not have herbicide used.

How big of a rake for a 5x6 baler
dimanche 14 février 2016
Right now I have a 10 wheel rake and that's all my massey 1837 square baler can handle in first cutting. If I start round baling and rebaling in the barn just wanted to get a idea if I could go to a 12,14,or 18 wheel rake when baling with a JD 569 or vermeer 605n.
How big of a rake for a 5x6 baler

Also is there any reason to go for the 3x4 balers over the 3x3 balers?

What is the best way to make dry Hay?
I need help figuring out what is the best way and fastest way to make nice green dry hay without adding any preservatives.
What machines used and the timing of each operation.
Seems like the rotary tedders are the favorable type of tedder to use. Then I read to tedd 3 to 4 hours after cutting or the next morning right after the dew burns off.
Also looking for methods of less leaf loss and the highest quality hay. I seen I think it was Georgia state has a contest every year on the best quality hay contest. Was it from U-tube that I seen this?????
On lets say we have these conditions to work with!
The day before we have a slow soaking rain all day, let’s say 2 inch. The next 4 days will be nice and sunny with the 3 day patchy cloud cover with gusts of only 5 miles an hour. Day four clouds clearing after 11.00 AM. With full sunshine and light breeze.
I like to set it up so I don’t drive on hay, as little as possible. Headlands always get it as everyone knows. I like to leave open ground in between windrows. So when I rake it has dry ground.
That’s what don’t make sense to me with tedding only hours after cutting. The ground never gets a chance to dry out as much as if left open in between wind rows.
It will be a relief to get come answers to clear this up from the guys with years of making hay and fighting the unknown! ( the weather )

Extracting a frozen implement jack
Went up to barn and discovered my bush hog sank 4" into the mud and froze SOLID into the ground (single digits for 2 nights here). I'm usuall good about putting a board under it, but that's another story.
I have run a few scenarios through my mind on how to extract it. I didn't know if I cranked jack all the way up to highest point, would it then allow me to lift bush hog out of the Jack with a tractor loader and a chain? Or do the 2 pieces of the jack stay together even when cranked to the top? (I think they do).
Any other ideas? I'd rather not destroy the jack.
I'm afraid if I don't cut it now, we'll have mud till regrow the starts in late March. Then they won't want it cut and I can kiss the payday goodbye.

Best type of air hose coupler??
I noticed here while back when I was in Big R in Indiana that they sell about fifteen different "styles" of couplers... usually designated by letter...
My question is, WHICH ONE is the most leak/trouble free?? I just get sick and tired of every friggin' time I set the impact down while doing a job, I have to listen to a constant "SSSSS!!!!" from the air hose nonstop!
"We can put a man on the Moon, but we can't make a friggin' air hose coupler that doesn't leak like a sieve as soon as the new is worn off it??" Geez... (well, actually we CAN'T put a man on the Moon anymore, so maybe we can't make a decent air coupler anymore either...)
I've used the "industrial" type (with the short sleeve below the ball lock groove). Just wondering if yall prefer something different and have better luck or not...
What I don't understand is, I've had hydraulic hose couplers drag the pavement and get a chunk ground off the side of them, all scratched or rusted to h3ll, dirtier than sh!t (I wipe them off first, but you know what I mean), look in the female end and it's full of dirt or soybean fuzz or grass debris or whatever, blow it out a little and couple the thing up, and run a couple THOUSAND psi of oil pressure through it, AND NOT HAVE THE FRIGGIN' THING LEAK!
Yet plug in an impact wrench or heck even the tire filler to the end of the flippin hose with a lousy 150 PSI of air pressure in the line, and the thing sits and hisses like a cobra all day...
I've only had to change the "O-rings" in the tractor's couplers ONE TIME due to excess leakage, and that was after 10 years of hard use with dirt and crud getting up in there and plugging in rust-scaled, worn, dirty, or even road-dragged damaged couplers... and all I had to do was fish out four "Several dollars a piece" silicone O-rings with a pick and shove new ones up in there til they dropped in the groove...
SO WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE A FRIGGIN AIR HOSE COUPLING THAT WORKS HALF AS WELL?? I'd switch to glad-hands like on a semi or the half-turn twist lock "straight through" industrial kind in a second if I could find them small enough, and with a valve of some sort on the hose end...
Later! OL J R

Want to buy Pequea tedder 710
Finding most in Ohio and Pennsylvania. I live in Wisconsin don't really want to go through Chicago for any reason.
Anyone have one or know of one for sale? There has to be one closer two or in Wisconsin. You just never know until you ask.
I know we all live all over the place and Canada. Must be way more popular in the east side of the county based off were I can find used ones.
Rather not buy from dealer they are not gold platted. Serial number higher than 10,000 would be best but open to any good units.
Found a five year old unit not used that much. But it is 580 miles away in south east Ohio.
Is there any one out there who would travel this far and through Chicago? Just for this type of tedder? My bet is no one would and all would think I had a screw loose! lol lol lol or two! lol lol lol

Missed Opportunity
I don't know about the rest of you but I troll the local listings for tractors and equipment regularly. Most of the time I don't mind missing a deal but I missed a MF 3120T, 4wd with a loader on it last night and it bugs me. I was a few minutes too late getting in touch and the first fellow came through with the cash this morning.
Would have been a nice horse to leave my discbine on all summer and move some snow in the winter.
I missed an MF8160 last year and an MF3075 also both 4wd and loaders.
The only one I was quick enough to get down and see before it sold in the last year was an Allis 8030 PS that turned out to be junk.
Anyone else spend time chasing deals?

Cutting a big round bale.
I was talking with a cousin of mine a while back about cutting big round bales.
Our thinking was that, if you could slice a big round appropriately, you could reduce wastage by having smaller "bites" of hay. I'm thinking of a post-baling crop cutter.
I tried using a reciprocating saw with a 12" wood blade--didn't work very well.
My questions:
What have you used to cut big round bales? (He thought a chainsaw might work.)
Has anyone used a BR baler with crop cutter? How'd it work? Wastage? Tractor horsepower?
Thanks.
Ralph

Just bought a used 4550 with a manual pickup. Just wondering if its possible to add or retro fit it so that I don't have to get in and out of the tractor so much. I've got quite a few small fields for now and at least in one instance the path into one field is a little rough. Also wondering about adding a thrower to save on hired help? How easy is it to do? MF 120 baler?
There is a MF 120 baler for sale not too far from me, and the guy posted "Needs knotter work, otherwise in good shape" and it's posted for $750. I haven't called to see what kind of knotter problems it has, because I don't want to waste his time if I know I can't get parts. I've read that 120 parts are VERY hard to get these days. I know th 124's were great balers, are the knotter parts interchangeable?
Were these good reliable machines? Anyone know of a good parts source other than the local MF dealer?
Thanks in advance!

Chipotle Blames Aussies?
Chipotle has chosen the popular American Big Business approach and blame someone else for their problems. What better way than to throw the Aussies under the bus. It is always better to give the speeding ticket to someone out of town.
Note that neither the USDA or Australian authorities have found any link to Australian beef being to blame. Not long ago Chipotle was championing Australian beef as being better than USDA.
Social media is following due course and neglecting fact.
What a circus.

Replanting old alfalfa orchard grass field
I have a small field of alfalfa orchard grass that is old and weedy. The orchard grass winter killed so I don't have enough grass to leave it go to grass - fox tail and other weeds are taking it over.
I would like to go back to orchard grass & alfalfa. I assume I will need to plant Millet or some other annual hay next spring and then grass & alfalfa the following spring - preferably into the millet stubble.
So the questions:
Should I spray it out? Roundup? Then fertilize and moldboard plow? broadcast or drill seed? Drag and roll. I would like it smooth enough that I don't bang around in my loader when moving bales (squares with 8 pack grapple).
Would appreciate recommendations from those that have been there.
Thanks,

Hesston Inline baler Capacity
I am curious if anyone has a challenger SB36 or Massey 1839 and is following a 40' header in wheat straw? I have found a couple of great used ones for a decent price. I would love to try a 1840 out but I don't think that is in the budget right now, so I'm scared to try it. I am only putting up 10k bale a year or so. I currently am running a JD 348 and it has been a great machine for 10+ years; misses maybe 1 out of 2000 bales and never have a problem with banana bales. This all being said, the pickup is way too small for following a class 7 or 8 combine with a 40' header. It barely catches the windrow and dribbles what most people wouldn't call a big deal, but bugs me. Baling capacity wise it is a pretty good unit, other than we should've ordered the heavier driveline when it was new (would've if the dealer had told us it was an option) and it is starting to show its age. We demoed a BC5070 last summer and I was not impressed, the pickup size was nice, but that was all.
I have been researching specs on all these balers and the 348 and BC5070 are both 93 stroke 30". The 1839 comes in at 100 Strokes and 22". To me and simple math the JD and NH are both covering almost 2800"/min and the Hesston 2200"/min. That's a 20% reduction! I have read in a couple places that you can boost capacity by advancing the stuffer a tooth or two on the Hesston, but also don't know anyone who has done that. With my 3020 on the front in 1st gear its about all my 348 wants capacity wise and I couldn't slow down more if I wanted to.
So to finally reach my point, is anyone doing what I am considering and does the pickup/pre-compression chamber get as much material in the 22" stroke as my 348 is now? I really like the idea of an inline with my Kunhs accumulator, but I don't want to loose capacity over "wanting" an inline. When the windrows are 40' apart it doesn't require any forethought on which direction you need to go.
I know there are other methods like splitting windrows and other slower tractors and whatnot but this is strictly a baler question, not looking to change everything in my operation.

Speaking of Slip Clutches.....
Read several posts on making sure the slip clutch is adjusted on a Deere square baler.
High on the to-do list on my 348 is to make sure the slip clutch is adjusted and definitely not rusted stuck before we begin baling.
The manual says, "Check clutch slippage using a spring gauge and 10ft lever attached to power shaft. Exert force at 90 degree angle."
Understand the 10ft lever as doubt anyone has a short handled torque wrench to handle the 550 (for cat 4 driveline) ft lbs torque or 600 (for cat 5 driveline) ft lb torque setting.
Are you setting your torque as per the JD manual and what are you hooking the lever to - how to grasp the front of the slip clutch?
Like to get this 348 off to a good start and I think the slip clutch check/adjustment is high on my list.
Thanks!
Bill

Equipment Recommendations for a newbie
Hey Guys,
Here is the background... I have 300 acres that is primarily set up for deer hunting in Wisconsin with 30 of those acres being planted in food plots. In order for my 30 acres of food plots (throughout the property) to be assessed as "AG USE" I need to show some type of income from these spots. My plan is to plant oats or barley this spring, then bale it once before I put in my fall plots (1st week of august) to sell. . Most of the plots are larger than 2 acres but some plots that I will be planting and picking could be tight at times (in the woods), have awkward corners, and its not uncommon for my soil to be a little rocky. I need some advice on what general HAY equipment (planter type, mower type/size, baler type/size, rake type,) you would recomend for my set up? should i buy new/used? I already have the tillage equipment. I also have a 45hp tractor, but will be adding another tractor around 100 hp this spring. I am trying to put together a list of equipment that will make the process the most efficient.... As far as my budget goes... I am willing to spend a little extra if the piece of equipment ultimately makes the job easier, and would rather spend a little extra for a quality product. say i have a budget somewhere around... 20-35k...and obviously would like to keep it closer to 20 (or less!) but like i said i would be willing to spend a lil more based off of your experiences/opinions.
Thanks!
-Michael

Shimming the bale chamber NH 1282
samedi 6 février 2016
I just completed shimming the bale chamber on my NH 1282 self propelled baler,it makes the bigger 16+18 inch bales which are too heavy so I narrowed the chamber down to 14+18 and put a plunger in it out of a 277 baler which is the smaller brother to this baler and after a few bugs it works great and makes a nice 14+18 bale it took some engineering but finally got it done. Went and cut some old frosted hay and it baled with good capacity and good square shoulder bales had that governor working on that engine sure sounds good. Got a picture of it before shimming it on my website http://ift.tt/20ha6bY;

Okay, so I'm looking to move into a little better baler. Had an old Super 68 New Holland, been looking at a John Deere 328. Things look used but tight, not worn out, it has the pan kicker on it. I guess my question is, what is the good bad and ugly with this baler, don't no anything about Deere balers.... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

So, that is my question. Do they make any kind of "pad" to sit pans on while they cook? Or, when one is sitting down a cast iron type of pan one does tend to drag it slightly. Why can't a fella just make a round piece of tempered type glass to sit pans on that might scratch or mar the surface?????........God bless......Dennis

I came home from work yesterday to a dead 5 month bred heifer. She was on a small decline of a hay mound in the barn. Feet were headed up the mound, but i feel as though it wasn't enough of one to cause her not to get up.
Go around back and there is half a leg sticking out of her like she was in labor...
So my question is, could she have been stuck and not able to get up and pushed hard enough to cause labor and push the calf up and out? Or would the more likely situation be premature labor and she was sprawled out and couldn't get up and bloated? Have any of you heard or experienced a cow laboring that premature?
I had 7 years good luck, just stinks my first loss was a nice registered heifer with calf
Thanks,
-Matt
