Every year,it seems i get to the point i'm thinking about quitting my old Haybine and going to a disc cutter.
A little background, first. I cut about 75 to 100 acres of hay for beef cows each year-mostly a one man show.I currently have a 9 foot and a7 foot Haybine. My 7 foot is basicly a backup machine in case my 9 foot goes down. Both a equipped with rock guards and good knives.
I routinely have trouble with the guards getting fouled on the tips with dead and/or heavy green material that causes a streaked field and not a little frustration. I can cut cleaner if I can cut dry hay on dry ground but that isn't always possible.I tried the stubble guards for several years and while they cut some better they did not do as well as I had been led to believe..I adjusted the hold down clips etc and either had rough cuts or binding on the knife.I also have dropped the reel and sped it up without much help.
If I go the disc mower route,I do not want a mower which would not be individual pods.If a pod goes out,I don't want to ruin the entire cutterbar. From what I understand, this eliminates the Kuhn and John Deere along with Morra and older model NH.
1/What would be a good choice?Currently pull Haybine with @70hp.
2/ Does anyone know anything about the spring steel paddle rolls of Vermeer 840?The newer ones have tines like NH,JD etc. There's a good used one for sale at 11,500.
Thanks .
