Having issues with the net tearing of the left side of a 67, 68 series Deere baler?

jeudi 30 juin 2016

I come across this issue also and i thought some of you may be experiencing it also.  As pointed out in a previous thread the spiral flighting on the net roller gets sharp edges and starts catching the net.  If you have a baler with more than a few thousand bales read on.  A bad bearing on the roller itself can cause this so check that out first.  If it's good then the culprit is likely the left bearing support bracket itself.  It is bolted on and the roller bolt goes through it also on both ends.

First the lower of the 3 bolts will break and then the bracket itself will twist and move forward.  This causes the roller to move ahead and the flighting wears steel on steel.  In the pic you will notice a side plate from a 80 chain to show the proper clearance ( approx 1/8").

The solution is a brace made to keep this from happening.  I just used  a couple short pieces off square tubing to make them up and it bolts to the holes in the next pic, bolts already removed.

Bolt the short length of 1 1/2"  tubing to the baler, make sure you have the proper clearance ( side plate) and weld on the piece of 1" square tube.  If needed the bracket can still be removed with the brace welded on.  Nothing much to it and it ends that net tearing problem.  Someone on here suggested paint after the flighting is touched up and i readily agree.  I do that too.   I put these brackets on my three 567's last year and never had another issue.

268 intermittent knotting

I have a 268 New Holland and it's been giving me issues all spring. at first neither side was tying so I adjusted it like the manual said and the outside knotter is tying perfectly it never misses. the inside knotter or towards the twine box would never tie. I had a friend come out who knows the knotters and work with it for 2 hours while I had hay on the ground and he managed to get it to tie about 4 out of 10 times. we filed the billhook down we adjusted the knife Farm for clearance and everything else. I replaced the twine knives and it's still isn't tying the but about 50%. it keeps getting caught on the billhook if I loosen the spring anymore even just a quarter turn it won't tie at all if I tighten it it won't let go at all so I'm kind of in that sweet spot. I am at a loss of what to do. it I don't know if I want to spend $95 an hour at the dealership. I attached pictures of the knots. Any other pics or questions to get this thing going so I can start my baling season would be awesome.

I was bailing straw today with my 1839 side by side with a new Holland big round baler and noticed he had a roller wind guard on it. Anybody like or dislike them? Would it be worth the PIA to install one on mine?

The new chopper

After the chopper destruction of Monday night, I bought a used JD 3975 chopper from a dealer in MT. Then I got a call this morning that it had been wrecked loading it on the trailer. It was fixable I guess but would have taken a couple of weeks. At that point I'm a nervous wreck with oatlage and alfalfa haylage needing chopped, so leave it to craigslist to have what I needed. A quick 2 hour jaunt to the north, I got my replacement. It's a little smaller than the machine it replaced, but should treat me just fine. I guess the modular house is out of the question now....

What is a safe, effective way to lube round baler chains?

I have a NH 644.  Should I try to lube the chains without engaging the PTO.  It is more effective to engage it and slow pour oil on the chains but I know that is more dangerous.  Just wondering how others did it.  Thanks!

Cheap fix for stuck torsion bars on Haybines

I have an old NH 467 with the torsion bar system that applies pressure to the crimp rolls.  After years of fighting the bar freezing up and/or getting out of adjustment, I came up with a simple and cheap fix that seems to work as well or better than the original design.  I bought two extension springs from MSC, which is a #905 Gardner Spring part

(http://ift.tt/29hPZcX) - and two cheap 3/8 turnbuckles from Home Depot.  As you can see from the pics, I simply removed the old linkage to the torsion bar and hooked the spring into the same mounting hole on the roller bracket.  An old length of chain for the turnbuckle and you're in business within ten minutes.  The original spring length was 6" for the coils so I tightened the buckle to stretch it to 8".  Total cost was less than $60.

The roller floats while cutting and can handle both thick and thin areas of grass.  I get plenty of stem crush with little leaf loss, which was sometimes a problem with the old torsion bar.

I'm posting this in the hope it might help anyone with a similar problem.  I have seen recommendations to burn out the plastic bushing but this method is probably less work and you're less likely to set your equipment ablaze...<LOL>

Bad Deal!

3 years ago we set up a 5acre plot around an office in a rural area, planted roundup ready alfalfa knowing their was a thistle problem, idea was to let someone keep and harvest the hay and take care of stand for no charge. Well I got a call and it's a mess, don't know about the first couple of years but last year it was harvested once, guy stated lack of rainfall but didn't affect anybody else, and now it's 3ft high, lots of weeds and a ton of thistles, should be into the second cutting by now. Anybody got any ideas besides the obvious?  Thinkin we're going to mow it high and see what happens, really need to spray, but were getting into dry hot weather.

Bad Deal!

How Bad Is My Hay?

The Haying Contractor mowed it on Saturday when everyone else was baling, but that does not matter now, it is what it is. Then Sunday afternoon he teddied it out to dry. Then on Monday he raked it in the afternoon in preparation to bale it.

Monday evening his baler broke after making one bale.

Tuesday night it started raining and rained until 4 AM today (Thursday).

He said he is going to borrow a baler if he has to and finish the job with today being the only day possible due to more wet weather arriving. So my question is as posted: how bad is it going to be? Mulch hay now? Feedable hay but with high nutrient loss?

This is the second time this has happened in as many years and I can honestly say I am DONE WITH HAY! 2 stinking weeks of weather without a cloud in the sky and my hay gets rain on...again. Time to go to silage I guess.

Question for Discbine - Mower Conditioner Owners

mercredi 29 juin 2016

I've got a small spot of hay left to cut and I'm finished with my first cutting this year (Timothy). Being it is so late in the year, with the rain we've had, it is mighty thick. The variety is Climax and the leaves are very dense, not crazy tall by any stretch, but a lot of hay per square ft.

Started cutting this stuff this evening with my trusty Hesston sickle mower conditioner, model 1110. 7 ft cut, rubber on steel rollers.

Being as the hay is so heavy, I went down a gear to avoid plugging. Aside from loosing a guard somewhere along the way and I've got a streak, the moco did great.

However, sometimes the grass was so heavy that it would pile up in front of the rollers. Hay coming out the back, just not fast enough to take all that's going in. At one point a wad of hay came up and over the reel! The mower scooped it up and went right through the rollers. Rollers never plugged or had hay wrapping them, etc. Occasionally they just wouldn't take the volume of hay.

Now I'm going sickle haybine ground speed......

Those of you with discbines - mower conditioners, do you ever plug your rollers? Does hay ever pile up in front of your rollers like it did with my mower today?

If you have an impeller conditioner vs rolls, I assume they NEVER plug, however, when the volume of hay is massive, are you getting a thorough conditioning of the hay?

I'm thinking today's cut was probably near the capacity limit for my old Hesston. Just wondering the limit on a disc mower conditioner - is the bottle neck the rollers like my Hesston?

Just curious.

Thanks!
Bill

So i've got 20 acres on it and so far love it. I've checked module oil levels (sometimes the PDI gets rushed around here) and given it a thorough look over.
What are you guys packing in your tool box and why?
And what are you looking over every day when you start?
Seems 50h between module oil checks is a little too long... But maybe i'm being paranoid?

Color stripe on NetWrap sticks on rollers

mardi 28 juin 2016

I use a 648 New Holland Baler, had for 7 years. About 10500 bales on counter. Replaced belts last year, and sledge gears and bearings this year.   I bought 2 rolls of Golden Harvest Net Wrap last year from Tractor Supply.  The first roll I spent nearly all the time unrolling the color stripe off the counter roller in the baler.  After about 1/4 of the roll, I gave up and changed rolls.  Toward the end of the roll I had problems with the color stripe sticking on the counter roller.  Bought another roll of Golden Harvest this year form Atwoods The color stripe sticks to the counter roller again.  No where else but the color stripe.  The color stripe will separate from the roll of wrap when it is unrolled.

What the He??  Never had this problem before.

Troubles with John Deere 24T baler with model 30 kicker

Baled many years with our baler & never had any issues with the kicker till this year. Every time we have baled this year it will kick every bale the first 150 or so then will only kick one every so often unless you manually trip the kicker. We replaced the control valve & it still does the same thing. Anybody have any suggestions? Nobody in the area has any experience working on them. Not sure if something needs adjusted or what.

free hay 12.5 miles away...

00P0P_fwDvx1DrMot_600x450.jpg

This question will mean many different things to many different people.  I found this posting on craigslist and the guy wants someone to cut and bale 2.5 acres.... for FREE just take the hay.  My only hang up is he's 12.5 miles away.  I'd have to butcher the field with my brush-hog.  I could use the extra money selling the hay to invest in a rake or sickle bar... I don't care if he's hard work or a pain in the ass... would anyone else do this to make a tiny bit of money... or am I literally insane for even thinking about it... considering it's 12.5 miles away.

Hesston 1010 moco

I just purchased an old Hesston 1010 hydroswing mower conditioner. When I bought it, I just looked at the rolls and noticed the rubber one still looked good. After I got it home and was servicing it, I found that the rubber and steel rolls did not mesh together. The ribs on the rolls are different widths and are twisted different directions. Has someone replaced one of the rolls or is that how this model is supposed to be?

Adjustments on new RTV

New to the forum, I'm considering pulling the trigger on a RTV-X1140 purchase and I'm looking for recommendations. After doing some reading on the forum I'd guess that there is a short list of things that should be adjusted/tuned on the RTV by the dealer prior to taking delivery to optimize performance. Following is a list of adjustments I've seen recommended so far:

-First is the link between your foot and the engine/hst linkage.
The large HST Linkage on the side of the transmission needs to
reach max travel when your pedal reaches it's maximum travel

-Sync accelerator pedal and HST linkage

-Engine Throttle
when the pedal reaches the floor or max travel, the fuel pump lever
should just reach max travel

-HST Lever
The other side of the HST Linkage is hooked to the HST Lever.
And to adjust it the manual says to unhook the HST rod from the lever,
move the lever forward towards the cab until it stops. Mark the case,
reconnect the HST rod onto the HST Lever, then step on the accelerator pedal and when at full throttle your lever should be just .040th shy of wide open. (Accelerator pedal, the hst linkage, the fuel lever and the hst lever.)

-Servo Adjust Screw

-Neutral (Differential) Screw Adjustment
Manual says 0 to 3 lbs difference between P1 and P2

-VHT Pressure Relief
Meant to release the residue pressure off the HST

-Increased Bypass Pressure to 3840 psi (3900-4000psi)

-Transmission

-Brake Cam Lever

-Synchronize the engine and HST

I'd appreciate any comments/corrections or development of a new list.
Thanks in advance for comments and apologies for ignorant redundancies.
Good site, good information.

moisture window for baling alfalfa

I've just retired from the job that paid for the farm and I now have the time to try to do hay right.  After reviewing several of the threads here, I think I understand the pros and cons of most of the steps involved in producing good alfalfa hay - leaves retained, no mold.  However, I am confused as to just when to start baling.  Let's say at the end of day 2 the stems are dry.  We rake on the morning of day 3 as the dew comes off.  On the morning of day 4, we have our hygrometer set up near a windrow and our delmhorst moisture tester is in hand.

Now, in a recent thread, two contributors said we should begin baling when the relative humidity reaches 65%.  (We are making round bales.)  But, based upon very limited experience, I expect the tester will show the moisture in the windrow to still be in 20's.    Am I wrong OR do we expect the dry stems to balance out the moisture in the leaves?  Under these circumstances, is our moisture target in the bales 18% or less?

Thanks.  My wife approves of my visiting haytalk - considering the alternatives.

Yellow Nutsedge

I'm in the northeast (mass) -  I've got a 3 acre field that's mostly timothy (it's two years old) ... and becoming pretty much all yellow nutsedge now.

The stuff is horrific.

So bad that I'm not overly concerned with trying to save the good timothy, if I must just burn it all down and start over.   I'm just not sure how to effectively get rid of it.  I've heard roundup is not a good solution.

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Time for a new rake

I've finally reached the point where need to do an upgrade. I'm haying about 100 acres per year, numerous small fields (18+ fields), lots of gateway's and odd shapes. I've always used a JD 640+660 parralel bar with a nh 2 rake hitch, but both rakes are getting bad, and the 2 rake hitch is a bear to move field to field.

I mow with a Zetor 6' drum, bale with a krone 130 with wide pickup. Almost entire wrapped silage, just a couple hundred dry squares.

Everyone is pushing rotary on me, but I'm concerned about maintenance/the amount of moving parts as well as the width. I'm currently using a JD B to rake, may use my 504 ih in the future.

I'm looking to gather 3 windrows into 1, thus the 8 vs 10 wheel.

How will the v do on rougher ground? Obviously, some corners/tight spots could be a problem, but so too with the two rake hitch. The 660 is my father's rake, so I'll keep that if I need it.

Dealer says he can have one in a week with kicker wheel for $5400. Model H90v8.

Gehl 1470 Twine Arm adjustment

I don't have a book for my Gehl 1470 baler. How do I get the twine arm to tie further to the right? I noticed the assembly slides on a square tube, but it is already hitting the baler on the right (can't move it any further right). I gave also adjusted the tie arm to stop and tie the right side just prior to cutting the string. It's almost like the twine arms need to be 1"-2" longer.

New Holland H7220 - H7230 Steel Conditioning Rollers?????

I have an operators manual for the New Holland discbine H7220. In it is shown adjustment for rubber rollers and STEEL rollers.

The online parts diagrams show replacement steel rollers, in addition to the traditional rubber rollers, for the H7230 only.

The brochure for the H7220 / H7230 discbines do not show steel rollers as an option. It is only in wider models that steel rollers are offered.

Question is - are steel rollers really offered as an option for the H7220 and H7230 discbines? Anyone have one of these models and if so - what are your thoughts regarding them equipped with steel on steel rollers.

Thanks!

when do you fertilize your hay fields

I have both grass mix and straight Alfalfa fields, I fertilize after 1st cutting with 50-40-80 plus 5S and 10Br  on grass and  0-60-120 plus 5S and 10BR on the alfalfa. Then I give the Alfalfa the same again after 3rd or 4th. I think I need more N on the grass but if it turns dry after 1st cutting the N is leached out and never used. If I apply fertilizer before 1st cutting I could put on more N but that can cause the hay to be harder to dry down and gets coarse faster. Any suggestions I think I could go 80 to 100 units of N in the spring.I am going try applying before 1st cutting on the poorest yielding fields and may add some alfalfa or clover seed to the fertilizer. any suggestions thanks

Krone Fortima hydraulic question

samedi 25 juin 2016

First time using a new to me Fortima 1500 with multicut, in the books it show 3 hydraulic hose connections. 1 for tailgate operation, 1 for pickup head/multicut blades in/out, and 1 for free return. In the book they are all on different remote sets.

The problem is I only have 2 sets of remotes. So I hooked the tailgate to one set and the pickup head lift to the other set. Then I tried the free return to the other side of both sets. Well it doesn't seem to work correctly as I have to hold the tailgate lever in draft position so the gate will stay closed as I build a bale no matter which one the return is connected to.

Also not sure if it's the same cause of the problem but some of my fields aren't the smoothest and when going in a divot or traversing a ditch the pickup seems to lift up and does not return back down on the ground and its wheels. So then I have to hit the second remote to lower the head back down to make sure I'm actually picking up the bottom of the windrow.

Any help?

How much H2O?

Using one of those large plastic totes to haul water to water my fruit trees. Filled it all the way up and saw the tires squat, let out quite a bit of water. Finally hauled 175 gallons and know that was too much.

24D Haying Restriction

Does anyone know why they have the 30 day restriction on harvesting hay after applying 24D Amine. Does it affect the livestock that is eating it or is it just so the herbicide has time to transfer to the plant and kill it? If you was to harvest before the 30 day what are the possible effect to livestock that will digest the hay? Needing to kill some weeds but don't need to wait 30 until I cut for hay.

Bales per bundle of twine?

I have been baling with my new to me Vicon 1901 baler the last few weeks. I love the baler, bales fast and good tight solid bales. I've baled 120 bales the last few days and just wondering how many bales do y'all get per bundle of twine. I bale 4x5 bales and use 20,000ft bundles.

Bales per bundle of twine?

Hay Perservative Nozzle Location on JD Small Square Balers???

Harvestec recommends on a JD small square baler to mount the hay preservative spray nozzles from their applicator on the inside/angled face of the baler sheet metal where the packer fork slots are located - just before the hay is pulled into the bale chamber. This looks to me to be a logical location, but it's easy to fill that area overflowing. Two concerns: 1) If the hay is packed into the packer fork area - overflowing, how can the nozzles possibly make a decent spray pattern on the broad area of the hay flowing through the baler? 2). The nozzles look to me like they would catch hay and/or plug as the hay is moved toward them.

Those of you that have JD balers, where are you locating your hay preservative nozzles?

Thanks!

Hay Perservative Nozzle Location on JD Small Square Balers???

upgrading baler maybe

Hello, looking for opinions, this year we have a lot of thick tall grass, timothy and bromes mostly, with clover and alfalfa mixed in, heavy here, light there. We have used a Hesston 745 successfully for 8 seasons, making 4'w x 5' diameter bales, works well on the trailer and in the barn. We have used a Kubota M9000 since new in '03 it is a good machine, do not want to change.

Problem is, when the hay is thick in the windrow, you have to go really slow or the baler plugs up.

When the windrows are high and wide, I'm talking creep speeds, or suffer a plug up.

I'm running at 540 pto speed (2,240 rpm tractor shows 540) other than that, the baler works quite well, twine only, every 10 to 15 bales or so depending on hay condition, you should clean out the knife area so the dual twine cuts cleanly.'

Electronic unit pc board is shot, doing the tying manually with dpdt switch.

Looking at trading this unit to a new Vermeer 605N, or a comparable unit from John Deere.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Wisconsin haying

I was up near Madison, WI, over the weekend and saw 4 farms that had hay on the ground.  In every case, they raked it late in the afternoon to early eavening and then let it sit for at least a day.  All of them used rollabar rakes, sometimes raking a double windrow.

What puzzled me was why they raked today, baled tomorrow or day after?

Need question help

If I'm not mistaken from talking to a friend of mine he claims that the earlier 900 RTV's had a shifting problem, that the transmission was under pressure and you had to shut the engine off to relieve this pressure in order to change gears. Then later on Kubota put some kind of switch in the brake system to relieve the pressure so the gears could be changed while the engine was running. Is all of this correct? And if so what year did Kubota put this switch in the brake line? I'm looking to buy a used one and I would like to make sure I get one with this updated change. Thanks in advance. BCM

Thoughts, experience, opinions from the well seasoned

Always had a few cows growing up but mainly a hay and corn soybean operation. Grandpa would breed to show and butcher one here and there and sell halves to family and friends. I took over the grain and hay operation on 'rent' and started updating and buying my own equipment a few years back. Raised a few steers for sale, nothing serious. Last month I purchased the family farm minus the house and 14 acres it sits on. I currently rent my house that's half mile away. (Family owned) Now I am putting an offer in on a farm a few miles away with 45 acres (39 in row crop) Always wanted to make a go at raising and selling beef and this place has the exact setup I need for feeding steers already there. Richie waterers, concrete throughout the barn yard, hay barns, silo. Maxed out could probably feed 125 head. Now I'm not looking to get that big that quick and I can always fill excess barn space with hay & straw we bale. But I'm leaning towards marketing natural freezer beef and maybe some conventional fed to take to sale yard. Have to fill some barn space if I buy it to justify the large investment. Any experiences, thoughts, advice welcome.

The first two weeks of custom work....

jeudi 23 juin 2016

This is the year that we decided to start an official Custom haying business, among other things. I have been running ragged but I have learned a few things.
I will say that we really haven't had any breakdowns in over a year. With that being said, what a first two weeks. We have had a setback or two, maybe twelve.
The hired hand ran a tractor tire over a broken t-post. Service truck for that one
The swather wouldn't start and after rebuilding the starter, changing the batteries, and a new solenoid, the service truck got called. I probably should mention that a 12 volt system is allergic to 6 volt batteries. I should have caught that one when they loaded the batteries in the truck
The hired hand took the swather out after it was repaired and 3 acres later called to say something was broken. In heavy hay it plugged up on the left side only and the auger exited stage left taking the elliptical bearing and belt pulley with it. It only took a few hours to dis assemble it, have the machine shop press the pulley and install a new bearing, and re assemble.
I learned that the only gas without ethanol in it is premium. Anything less is prone to vapor lock the wagon carburetor when the temps are in the nineties. I also learned that ATF in the 87 octane will prevent vapor lock. 1 pint to 40 gallons of gas.
Sometime around four this morning, I think, the baler tried to swallow a tip from an s-tine that a roller harrow lost. It failed miserably. That one was a free fix. The bearings on the trailing arm of the plunger jumped under the guide that it was supposed to be on top of.
All in all things have gone well, we are averaging three calls a day. We have put up a pile of hay. The equipment is fairing pretty well overall. The first few checks are rolling in now and that will take some pressure off.
I have under bid a few jobs, live and learn. It will get easier.
I am glad that we filed the corporation, it will have many benefits. I am already looking at more equipment and hiring another guy, or gal. The stipulation is that equipment purchases are on a cash basis.
The outlay of capitol by way of wages, fuel, twine and parts is substantial. It is never good to be under capitalized. Thankfully we weren't or we would be broke before the first check came in.
Hopefully this helps those that are thinking about doing custom work. It has been fun but it will become a job if I am not careful.

The first two weeks of custom work....

Replaced guards and knife, now can't move knife on NH 477

Some of you may recall a thread I posted recently about adjusting knife guards.  This is on a NH 477.  Well my knife guards were all pretty worn so I thought I was doing the right thing and bought all new guards and a new cutter bar, as well as new clips, got everything through Webb's.  A $350 investment or so, but I thought it would be worth it and that I was doing the right thing.

I have all the guards replaced, and got the cutter bar in, which was very difficult.  I had to pound it in with a rubber mallet, but this is also what I was reading on how to do it.  The new guards looked nice and straight, but now I can't move the cutter bar at all.  All the clips are lose, not tightened down in case that was the reason.  Before I removed everything I could move the cutter bar with ease of course.  I don't dare hook it up to the PTO until I can move it freely by hand.

Do I need to adjust the bushing up on the head???  I know somebody here knows what to do!

I hate it when you try to do it right, don't take short cuts or cut corners, and you're in worse shape than you started.  And now I missed my second window to cut trying to deal with this thing.

What causes this on JD 468?

Always happens on the left side and strips the net off the the left third of the bale. I'm in the process of taking a Dremel to buff out any burrs or rough spots. Am I on the right track?

Grain Sorghum/Milo

I have decided to plant some grain sorghum instead of double crop beans. I'm hoping that between our usual summer drought and the damage that deer do to soybeans that the grain sorghum might work better on most of my ground. This is going to be my first time growing it.

I'm going to be no tilling it with a 1590 JD drill. I'm trying to decide if I should plant it on 7.5 inch rows or tape off every other tube and plant on 15 inch rows. Which would be the better?

Should I apply all the nitrogen broadcast at planting or do a split application with part at planting and come back and top dress with liquid nitrogen? I have been told I need 80-100 units of N.

Closed Gate Sensor on 567

mercredi 22 juin 2016

Can someone walk me through how to adjust the closed gate sensor on a 567 round baler.

Did it on and off last year but this year it does it every bale. Gate closes and monitor shows its closed all the way up to 22.5" bale most of the time then it starts beeping telling me it's open when in fact it's closed. Other times it'll go to 32" size bale before it starts beeping.
Thanks in advance

Hay rake Help

We have three NH 56 hay rakes two work great the other started giving us trouble and i cant seem to figure it out. I had to replace the telescoping drive shaft as the old one was worn and would spin in itself causing the rake to hang up. After that it worked great. The other day it started hanging up on its self. this is with or without load. the roll bar will make two revolutions normal then it will kinda delay and then spin again. Any ideas what this maybe? Ill try to get a video this week when we use it again

Moisture Meter Readings - Square Baler Mounted

Did a little baling with the JD348 and on it, I've installed the John Deere labeled version of an Agtronix BHT-2.

Low humidity, good breeze during curing - the hay was crisp and dry (timothy).  I've inquired before about side doors (which this baler has and when to use them) - and one thing I've found is if the hay is really dry, on my baler, having the side doors about 3/4 in (we've played with different settings) along with the top tension, holds the grass great and we get a nice looking brick bale.

Moisture reading - pretty much 11%.

Then the shadows started coming and with it higher ambient humidity, the hay started rehydrating some.  The moisture reading started slowly climbing, up to about 16%.  At that point, the bales were noticably heavier AND tighter - understood.

The only real adjustment we made - to continue baling for another hour to finish was back off completely the side doors.  When I unscrewed them, you could hear the bale chamber groan - almost like an old wood stove cooling heating up.

I tell my kids - every piece of equipment speaks to you and you have to listen for it.  Higher the humidity in the air, the baler started working the tractor a bit harder, in addition to tighter and heavier bales.  It was time for an adjustment.

After we took out the compression of the side doors - the hay returned to 11-12% humidity.  The bale weight returned to what we had become accustom to, strings tight, nice brick bale.

The manual speaks to density of the bale and it's impact on higher readings.

Question is - how much do you trust these baler mounted monitors?

I'm still new with this one - and feel that as we go forward, we will see a pattern where the readings fall-out.

If we are getting up in the ambient humidity and it starts reflecting in the monitor, yet we've adjusted the bale density - then it's probably time to switch on the buffered propionic acid as the moisture climbs.

I had thought that hay preservative would be for potentially whole afternoon's baling - where a 3ish day window was all that was available.  I can see not that with the moisture meter readings "live", we can gain some earlier start and quit times as the ambient humidity comes and goes.  This would really help in baling around the day job hours too.

NH66 Problem

I went out today to bale that small section of the field that I brush hogged down. I ran into a problem and had to stop... Possible rain tonight so I hate to say it but I hope it misses us...  I was greasing some zerks and messing around with it trying to learn how things work.  I believe I did something to create this problem.  I tripped the knotter or something.  Anyways it appears that the needle? underneath is not feeding twine up to the knotter like it should.  I ended up cutting the twine and partially re-stringing it.  I'm pretty positive that it's all strung properly but the needle arms are not being tripped.  I'm assuming something is not triggering them to feed upwards to the knotter....  I'm going to read the manual and see what I can figure out but any advice to get me going would be great.

Thanks!

Unrelated, Forks Question....

I realize this is totally not related to forage and or hay equipment, but you all have helped me out before so here go's....  A buddy borrowed my tractor and pallet forks attachment the other day, when he brought it back he said one of the forks had broken off.  Long and short is we can't find the broken piece, no idea how you loose something like that, but I guess thats a conversation for another time.  As near as I can tell this piece is called an "upper carriage hook"  (I think).  I have searched high and low and can not find one.  Any suggestions?  I have attached a photo of the part I need from the other fork.  The dimensions are approximately 3 and a half inch wide by 2 inches deep/thick.

Thanks in advance!

Unrelated, Forks Question....

Planning for fall. What to plant?

Starting to think about fall planting.  Wanting to drill some wheat/rye/oats/etc after our last cutting on about 10-12 acres to bale in the spring.  Not sure what is going to be our best option.  Originally was going to get 1st cutting off the field, and plant Teff for the summer, then spray the whole field, plant some wheat in the fall, put Teff in again next June, then reseed a perennial hay mix.  Time has gotten away from me, and here we are almost the end of June, and haven't been able to put the Teff in, so I'm thinking of changing my game plan.  This hay field has not had much done in the way of fertilizer, seed, herbicide for the past 20-30 years, just had hay taken off of it.  So, it has been pretty thin, with some weeds and briars mixed in.  I no tilled rye and a grass mix last August.  Didn't do as well as I had hoped, but it was a dry fall for us.  We figured on a mediocre 1st cutting off of it, but ended up with about 1.75-2 tons/acre, and got it before the weeds started, so we stayed ahead of it.  Fertilizer truck is headed out this afternoon, with rain coming tonight, so hopefully that will help what is already there.

So my question is, what is going to be my best option for a fall seeding to get ready for next year.  Probably going to spray 2,4-D in a couple of weeks, and hope to have a decent 2nd cutting.  Would like to plant a cereal annual this fall.  With the grass looking better, I hate to burn it off, just to reseed.  Any suggestions?  I appreciate any input.

NH bc5070 short pigtails

Our five year old NH 5070 square baler has very short pigtails on the knots. Any suggestions on how to make them longer? It rarely misses a knot, but the tails have gotten to where they are only 1/4" long. It hasn't seemed to cause any problems yet, but I'm concerned about the knots pulling apart if they get any shorter. We switched from sisal to 170 plastic this year. Tails are short either way. Plastic does work better, but still have very short tails. I tried tightening both the twine disc spring, and the billhook spring slightly like the manual said. Made no difference. The dealer said to loosen the twine disc spring from where it was originally. That made no difference either. I also loosened the twine holder plate coming out of the twine box to the point where there is just enough tension to keep the twine from falling out. The tucker fingers are 1/8" to left of needle slot in the home position with slight pressure on them. The short tails haven't seemed to cause any problems yet, but I'd like to lengthen them out before problem arise. Anyone have any experience on this?

NH 1069 Brakes

I am relatively new to operating our family's NH 1069 bale wagon. At the start of this cutting the brakes worked, but now when I press on the brakes nothing happens. The brake pedal pushes to the floor without doing anything. This has made unloading quite tricky when I back up to the stack and need to stop without hitting the stacks behind me. What should I look at doing to fix my brakes?

Hello, I'm new to this forum and searching for a gearbox for my old New Holland 260 Rollabar rake.........the 258 is working fine, but gears are worn out on the 260!  Raking with ONE rake when I'm used to raking with the twin rakes is getting annoying very quickly.  If anyone can help I would certainly appreciate it.  I'd prefer to find a salvage part if possible......since the New Holland dealer wants practically the price of a rake for a gearbox...........:(.  Thank you.  P.S. Need a simple way to adjust the slip clutch on NH 570 baler

Slip clutch on my NH 570 baler started -- well -- slipping yesterday when I was baling some straw.  It would chirp at me when I hit a big slug every once in a while.  Then it got to the point where it slipped continuously.

Did something drastic--got out the manual.  The procedure for adjusting the slip clutch calls for a 5' bar, weight and a magic wand.  Don't have any of those.

Anybody have a simple alternative way for adjusting it?

Hesston 4650 feeding problems

What would cause a 4650 inline baler to not feed hay into the chamber on a consistent basis. My hay is really dry. Could that be the reason for it not feeding across the pickup into the feeder forks? The baler is used , welds on the edge of the auger. I had the chance to get an case 8540 inline baler from my uncle. low bale count . not used in 12 years. always put in shed. First question is before baling what should I do to it. Then what do I need to watch for. Never had a inline baler  but always  wanted one for our alfalfa. Also the man who did our brome used one and his bales were perfect. I saw once that someone here talked about spraying PAM cooking spray in it and on the chute. any thoughts on all this would be very much appreciated.

NH 66 update

I cleaned up the knotter pretty good... It was much worse. I checked the gap between the plunger knife and the stationary knife. It was very close maybe the width of my finger nail. I was rotating the flywheel to see how things were moving and to reach a couple zerks. While doing this I was unknowingly advancing twine and tying a knot lol. There is only a small start of a bale in the chute. Worst case the first couple bales fall apart?

I'll be running it tomorrow after the dew dries to bale a small field.

What to charge to stack with bale wagon

I have a 1069 diesel bale wagon that we use to stack our hay. I have had some interest in being hired to custom stack. What is a good price. Some would be 2 miles from the barn, some is right beside the barn. The first person I've talked to mentioned maybe paying so much per bale, putting fuel in my machine and paying the operator a good operators wage for running the machine. Such as $15-20 an hour. What is everyone else getting in a situation like that?

Used parts for Vermeer 504H?

I am currently running two older Vermeer 504s, one H and one F... both had very low bale counts so I bought them.  Sadly, the 504H bent the starter roller the other day and I can't seem to find a used one ANYWHERE.  I only paid about $1800 for the baler so spending $1,200 to get a brand new starter roller seems a little impractical to me.  Any of you know a good place to find what I need?

JD 337 bale length inconsistent

Set at 32-34 inch bale length for the pan style thrower. Every couple bales will be a tad shorter 26-28 inches which is no big deal. The problem is it'll make a bale that's only a third the length, like maybe four plunger strokes. Which causes the thrower not to return and gets hung up on the next bale in the chamber. Tried everything from size of windrows to baling speed and nothing seems to make a difference. Have made adjustments to the metering but nothing has helped.

Anyone know the cause of this?

Ok guys', I'm considering trading for a MC. However after hearing horror stories and reading about them on here, just how prone are they to fail. i know they are $$$$ to replace but to repair? Is trying to cut square cornors what is hardest on them, i really don't care about that, the way if figure it you can't rake or bale a square cornor so why try to mow one it doesn't take that long to cut out the cornors.

Well, I have been using the NH 650 that I am leasing from the Son of my deceased friend. See previous post.

I had the baler through the NH dealer and have been baling just fine with it. Now, tonight the right side bearing on the upper drive roller turned to toast, fortunately no fire.

Now to fix. How hard is it to replace that bearing. I looked online at the NH parts book and it appears I may have to pull the left side bearing to get to the right side. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Help with Krone Vario Pack 1500

dimanche 19 juin 2016

I recently purchased a used 2007 Krone Vario Pack 1500 round baler and I am having a few issues getting started with it.

I've attempted making 3 dry hay bales with it so far and when the bale chamber gets about 30% full, the tailgate opens slightly and the alarm sounds. I've tried closing the tailgate at that point but it won't. I did notice that when the bale chamber is empty and I close the bale chamber, the latch on the right hand side did not fully close (I'd say about 1 cm (3/8") from the bolt touching the bottom of the latch). Although with the baler parked overnight, the latch on the right hand side did close fully. The left hand side of the baler did close and latch properly.

Here's what I've tried so far without it helping:

Changing the hydraulic hoses to different remotes on the tractor,

Adjusted the latch sensor on the right hand side of the baler.

If anyone can point me in a direction of what to try next that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

A second question I have is with regards to loading the netwrap or twine:

There are two rollers that feed the netwrap or twine - a rubber roller and a pressure roller. Should I be able to turn the rubber roller by hand to load the netwrap when the baler is parked? Mine doesn't and I suspect it is seized, but I just want to double check.

Thanks for any and all help.

Anybody Else Dry?

Here in my little spot in South Carolina we are toast already. Grass looks awful. If this keeps up we're in trouble. And just last year we had record rainfall.

Annual ryegrass as a companion crop

I started most of my Alfalfa as Roundup Ready this spring. I have a 3 Acre field I decided to plant with conventional Alfalfa and Orchard Grass for a little bit of mixed hay I would normally use oats for a companion crop but could not find any that day and the seed salesman recommended 3 pounds of annual rye grass per acre for a companion crop. I was skeptical but thought I would try it . Even though I only got about two-and-a-half to three pounds of annual rye grass on per acre by mid-may the rye grass was about 3 foot tall and very thick it was in danger of choking out the Alfalfa that was growing beneath so we had to cut it in mid-may. The rye grass grew back immediately with vengeance 1 months later it has choked out all the alfalfa I am so glad it is only a tiny field because the project is a total loss on our farm I would never plant annual ryegrass as a companion crop for Alfalfa seeding in the spring and I never had a problem with oats

Myres 3pt sprayer

I've got a older Myres 3pt sprayer, it is a older 100gallon tank that has a cast iron pump housing.

It works great, the trouble I'm having is the screens in the nozzles need cleaning after every tank full, their is small rust flakes in the system, I think it's light rust in everything from the pump housing to the boom's, they are metal also..

Question...  is their anything I could circulate through it that will dissolve the rust and not hurt any rubber seals that may be inside, I would like to clean the internals to help keep the rust out and help keep it in good shape, I understand they don't make these any more and I would like to keep it working for years to come...

Thanks, Chris

Repair, replace, or run with it?

JD 730 Moco hitch. Ball is supposed to rest on drawbar extension so hitch can rotate/flex around it. As it is now ball is loose and hitch is resting on extension. Ball now is acting almost like a large pin. Hitch is not wore enough on bottom to come up off of ball.

Repair it. Not sure how to "refit" ball so it can support hitch. Any suggestions?

Replace it. Couldn't find any parts except to replace the whole hitch. Looked up on jdparts but couldn't find price. Got to believe it's high. Hate buying whole hitch when just the ball is loose.

Or run with it. Hitch is still secured with not much play. Should I just use it till play is too much or there is potential for hitch to come off, then replace the whole thing.

Any suggestions and comments welcome. Thanks.

EPA and Army Corp of Engineers

I was reading up on the EPA's website regarding the Supreme Courts ruling that the Army Corp of Engineers now has jurisdiction over any body of water, yet the EPA claims that it will not impact farmers in any way. To say I was skeptical would be a gross understatement and so this is how this new ruling has changed in the few scant months it has been in place.

Well just below my house is a wet area where there is a small bridge, maybe 6 feet wide with the brook not even navigable by canoe. The town was going to dig up the sinking approaches and put in new gravel because as you hit the bridge, it practically sends the car air born. The town could not do that though because to dig up the wetland would require Army Corp of Engineer permits that would take 2 YEARS TO GET. The town's road money does not work that way; we allocate money on a year by year basis.

Then yesterday, I had the USDA State Soil Engineer come out to make a wetland determination for some new farmland I am making out of forest. That is no big deal, but he told me now if one bulldozed stump rolls into the wetland area, I can be fined not only by Maine Dept of Environmental Protection, The EPA...but now the Army Corp of Engineers as well. Here is the kicker though. I live on such a hill I can see 150 miles away. Its so high the area I am clearing splits two watersheds; we are not even talking a trickle of water here, it's just wet, but the Army Corp of Engineers now has authority here...really?

Now here is the double kicker, we all know the constitution of the USA; look at how much power our founding fathers gave the Supreme Court to make these rulings...1 single paragraph. The point is, they wanted the majority of the power to go to ELECTED officials so that we could rein them in. Now everything is decided by the Supreme Court...such as clarification on the Clean Waters Act and they are far removed from reality.

(Here is a photo of the "wetland" the Army Corp of Engineers now has jurisdiction over. I apologize for the Little Red Riding Hood and Logger theme as my wife and I do themed photo shoots for fun, but this was the only photo I had of this area of our land. Believe it or not I just don't start taking pictures of wet areas of our woodlot for no reason. But I really wanted you guys to see how unwet this area is considering who has to get involved now.)

Anyone use Envirocord twine?

Local farm supply is saying this is better than sisal. Had trouble out of their sisal this year.

http://ift.tt/1UCwxcE

His 16,000 sisal is $49 and this stuff is 20,000 for $33 for a single ball I think he said, so $66 for 2.

John Deere 1525 / 300 Platform

Hi All,  Brand new here with a question.  I had a 1424 John Deere Mower conditioner with a 225 head.  Was a good machine, so when I had the chance to upgrade to a 1525 with a 300 twin knife head, I jumped at it.  So far, big mistake.  The machine wont cut very well in the middle where the sections meet.  After a bit of investigation it seems to me the guards are all in the wrong places, and possibly not even correct to begin with.  Does anybody have one of these machines that can help?  or possibly a website or resource where I can find a schematic to help me figure out what I have for guards and what I need instead?  John Deere wasn't much help.

Any Advice is greatly appreciate.

Thanks,

Eric

Bale shape with older NH balers

As some of you have noted, we recently came into a whole bunch of self-propelled balers ........... five of them to be exact.

As haying season was just upon us ... we scrambled like mad beavers to get at least one of them running!

Something came up about bale shape and the timing of the cross feed:

(This only pertains to the old style ....... pre 580 etc. ............ the ones with a tine bar and the aluminum feed fingers)

The classic or "book" adjustment for bale shape is to move the fingers along the tine bar and generally in opposite directions to each other.

Ie. if you move the leading set towards the chamber, you move the middle set away from them.  If you move the leading set away from the chamber, you move the middle set TOWARDS them.

That all still stands.

If you care to change to a different shape and or length of feeder finger that will change things as well......... for better or worse.

As always, when you make those changes, you need to make certain you are not causing a hit on the plunger or things will get a lot worse fast!

But a new to us concept came by way of an 'ole NH baler salt from our area:

This it the concept of trumping the timing of the cross feed bar.

The theory goes like this:  If you advance the cross feed timing .......... you allow the hay charge to bounce back from the far baler chamber wall ......... a moment of spring back if you will ........

Now again, if you make such a change you definitely need to make sure you are not setting up a cross feed strike on the plunger.

On the first NH 1283 we set up we have been baling for about 3600 bales thus far with the cross feed set about 1 1/2" forward of the most advanced timing mark and in inconsistent feeding conditions have been getting great bale shapes.

Just food for thought!

Gehl 165 Disc Mower Parts

I have a 165 Gehl disc mower that lost the first gear under the turtle closest to the gear box and the two idler gears on each side.  New gears aren't too terrible, but my bar is pretty worn and needs replaced.  Anybody have one that is salvageable that they would part with?  If not, I have one with several new parts minus the three gears and the top pan of the bar for salvage.

Control of cursed milkweed

Has anyone figured out a chemical control for spot treatment of milkweed that is not restricted?  I know that rup will work, just trying to not have my wife walk aimlessly around the field painting milkweed plants.  Seems like they thrive when the ground is rock hard and therefore hoeing them is not an option.  I think spraying is the only way to get the tuber.  I have a mess of them in my new og field and I want them gone.  Thanks.

My windrower is dead to me

vendredi 17 juin 2016

Bought a Hesston 1014 this spring and planned on cutting most of my hay with that. Took a little bit to get her going but it cut my triticale and some of my first cutting Alfalfa fine. Then we moved to a big feild of perennial ryegrass. Boy what a nightmare. 3 low on an 8 speed was flying if you weren't getting clogged. Got so pissed I tore the crimper rolls out right in the feild. That helped a bunch but the hay took a week to dry on both the conditioned windrows and non conditioned. I also managed to bust two knife heads. Putting up 100% small square bales the 40 acre feild that yeilded 3300 bales took two weeks to put up, that was with 4 days of cutting/ breaking down.
That was 2 weeks ago. This week I let her sit and hooked up to the ole JD 39 sickle bar. Never clogged (because i know how to run it), ran in 1st gear high range, and got 20 acres done per day. Alfalfa dried in 2.5 days and grass dried in 1.5 days. What a difference. Makes me miss the ole disc mower but can't afford one that is worth a darn. Looks like we're going old school for a while but it's for the best

2016 Pequa 4 basket tedder

Looking at purchasing a new 2016 4100 Pequa 4 basket tedder.  Who has a late model one and are they a strong as they look.  They seem to be very comparable to the Krone,  I like Krone but nearest dealer is 2 hours away and a close dealer is important for parts and service in the years to come.

Tedder Tuning

I've been finding little tuffs of thatch in my hay and see a chunk of sod flying out once in a while from one of the middle rotors when tedding even when I set it so it barely can pick up the hay so it was time to check it over.

- Checked tire pressure, the rotor that was digging, that tire was low, fixed that, still digging soil.

- Checked the tire height cam thing, first time I've ever messed with it but it was set fine on all rotors.

- Parked on solid surface and unhooked pto and rotated all the tines, 2 tines were 2-3" too low.  Separate rotors.  Bent the arms back up into place.  Teds like a brand new machine again!

I vaguely recall moving it around in the shed with the forks on the loader this past winter, oops.

Baler problems

buying a new/used disc mower

So I bought some land (60 acres) about 5 years ago and for the first couple of years I had no problem getting it cut.  Well I was actually giving all the hay away to a guy who would cut it for me just to keep the land clean.  I finally built a house on the property and moved in.  I figured it was only fair considering I was living there now that we would do a split so that is what I suggested.  After the first Hay season passed and I was stood up on the cutting I started searching for custom cutters in the area but low and behold I couldn't find one or maybe I just didn't have enough land for them to bother.  I finally found a guy who would do a split with me, not in my favor, so we made an agreement.  His guy cut but in my opinion did a terrible job, left a lot of waste and only cut the premium grass so now I'm debating on buying equipment that will last awhile and just doing it myself.

I have a low hp tractor 63 horse Ford 4610 4wd and I've picked up a rake and JD (I think it was a 336) square bailer but I still need a cutter to get started.  I have found there are a lot of different brands out there to choose from and the brands I know (JD, New holland) are expensive plus i've heard NH is not a good disc cutter.  I was wondering if you guys who know about this kinda stuff could give a city boy who moved to the country a little advise?  What brand disc cutter would you suggest and which cutters would you stay away from?  How big could I go with a 63 hp tractor with about 54 hp at the PTO?  Any other suggestions for my scenario?

Killing Foxtail in Bermuda

Haven't been posting much I'm short handed and we are running wide open. Hopefully things slowdown soon.

My problem is foxtail is getting thicker and thicker in one of my Bermuda fields. I've used pastora 3 times on it, twice last year with one it turned off dry and once this year. This stuff doesn't seem to even be phased by it. I've been told to run a pint to the acre of roundup on it after we finish baling (tomorrow) by my chemical man and my Helena rep says the Dow man is recommending 1 ounce/acre pastora with 6 ounces/acre of roundup. What have y'all used that has worked on this stuff? At this point cost isn't really a concern since I've wasted $13 bucks /acre on pastora 3 times. I need it gone or at least slowed down. Thanks ahead.
