Baling beans....

Fellow across the way just stopped by with a problem/idea.

Seems he has 17 acres of beans right by the Miss. river and the river is rising such that his ground will probably be flooded by Sunday.

Beans are soft enough right now that they can be split with your finger nail.  The stems are pretty green and beans are at 80% moisture.

His idea is to mow, rake, bale them with a round baler, then move them to higher ground and run them through his combine.

What's your all thoughts about this?  Can the bean stalks be baled?  Will a round bale crush the bean?

Other thoughts?

Ralph

180 acres of Johnson grass mix hay

jeudi 29 septembre 2016

I had a guy offer this to me to cut for free. It was cut last first of June, and we've had plenty of rain this year. Says it has a good bit of Bermuda in it. It is a god square flat field. I know it's not been stressed this year.
What do you think?

Do 'wide swath' kits on MoCo's dry hay faster?

I'm narrowing down my search for a new MoCo at the end of this year and am looking for opinions on whether or not to get the wide swath kit offered by most of the equipment brands. NH and Krone offer it as an option, Kuhn seems to offer it only on it's center pulled machines, and now JD is coming out with a version of it for next year. I'm making strictly grass hay for horses........small squares. Will spreading the hay out very wide while mowing make the hay dry faster? I've heard yes, simply due to more surface area exposed to the sun, but I've also head the arguement that a swath that just fits between the rear ties of the tractor is better so that.......A) the hay doesn't get run over as much, and B) so that the area in between the swaths can dry out before tending. I typically come in with the tedder a few hours after mowing. Just curious what everyone has found.

I'm looking to deal on some Equipment with a dealer in Pennsylvania. Name is Gunther Heussman, specializes in late model used equipment. I'm in NC and was hoping someone could give tell me about the outfit. Hate to drive 12 hours one way and be disappointed. Everything sounds real straight forward though. I believe he is in Emmaus, PA. Thanks for any info on the dealer.

Brush Hogging Grass Hay (tips)

I read this in the comments of a youtube video.  I was hoping someone could confirm this for me.  Also I was wondering what the best/safest way to determine which way the blade spins...

If the rotary cutter blade rotates counter clockwise, mow clockwise and over lap a foot or so to pick up and cut vegetation laid down by the tires on the previous pass.

Any other tips would be great! Last time I used it to cut the grass as many of you may recall.... I kind of did a butcher job. I was hoping to refine my technique a little to improve the cut. I'm aware it's only going to be so good considering I'm not using the proper tool for the job. I also read and remember someone suggesting I over lap my passes to help get a better cut.

Hopefully I can get my sickle bar going this winter so I don't have to brush hog any more hay. I'm worried that even once I tune it up it'll struggle with the bunch type orchard grass I have. I guess only time will tell.

Bale Throwers: Difference between a NH 70 and 72

I just bought a used NH 70 belt thrower, hydraulic drive.  It's in great shape, but I'm just curious what the difference is between the 70 and 72, in case I need any parts or extra brackets to mount it to my baler (I have a massey 124 baler, so I'll likely need to shim the brackets and fiddle with it to get the fit the way I want it.)

Thanks!

Small squares best stacked string up or on side

I was wondering what is the best way to stack small squares into a barn? I have always stacked them string down but i have stored verry little hay but i am going to be baling more small squares next year and was wondering what the best way to stack it is and why so I can get prepared over the winter? My bale size as of now is 14x18x36 How does everybody stack it. Thanks.

Loaded tires

Well, a pleasant surprise. The DK55 I bought has loaded tires. How do I determine what they are loaded with? Lools like a fairly clear liquid. I only found out when I tried to put some air in the back tires and got bubbles and some fluid. Also, I have the industrial tires, how much extra weight should I expect from the loading? Thanks in advance.

Massey Rotary Rake

mardi 27 septembre 2016

Wondering if anyone has ran a new Massey Rotary Rake? I saw where the have the ability for the rotors to flex to follow the ground better. We have some rough leased land, and very hilly terraced land. in general, Will these big Rotary rakes get the hay up on bumpy and rolling terrain? And will they hold up? We currently run a 10 wheel Kuhn speed rake, but want to keep the dust and debris out of our hay.

Silo King preservative

I'm seriously thinking about going to Silo King preservative for my hay. I wanted to see if anyone on here was using it and what your personal experiences with it have been. How well does it keep the hay from heating and molding and what would be the highest moisture you can bale with it and not get mold/heating? For those of you using it what is the cost of the product? I looked in to it a little a couple years ago but I remember the cost of the product seemed kind of high per bale. I mainly plan on using it for alfalfa but may end up using it on oat and grass hay as well if I get in a pinch. Would using it on small squares that are packaged in Bale Bandit bundles.

268 gearbox

Does any one know where I can find a service manual on the gearbox? The baler has been pretty much completely gone through. Only thing I can think of is bearings in the gear box. Mainly looking for the torque specs on the lock nuts for the bearings and shimming.
There is still the problem when you get into very heavy hay it makes the tractor sound like something is wrong. Sometimes like gears are grinding or chirp noise. All seems to come from below my feet on the tractor. I'm using a Ford 4600 gas. Or am I pushing the tractor too hard. Otherwise it bales without any problems.

RTV X1140 hydraulic mods

Hello everyone, been a long time lurker and finally feel it is worth making my first post.

I was a happy 2009 RTX 1140CPX owner for many years until it was stolen from my property earlier this year and was never recovered. Fast forward a few months and my insurance company finally settled and i went out and bought a new X1140.

I have a few things i would like to share that i have learned from this new unit to get some feedback from other owners/users and hopefully provide some useful information for any others searching around the web for information on these machines.

Never really had many issues with the old unit other than the usual plugged up radiators and dirty air filters. I had a snow blade on the front with a winch for lifting it. I constantly had issues with the winch cable binding up on the drum and i hated the manual angle adjustment on the blade. I always planned to do something about it, and with the arrival of the new unit i decided it was time.

So right from the dealer i ordered the roof kit and 4000lb winch kit with the unit, and all is well with those options. I also bought the service manual for the unit as i knew i would need to know some specifics about the unit to execute my planned modifications for my snow blade.

I was never too impressed with all of the electric actuator options for most snow blades (especially the price). So given the fact that the RTV has hydraulics on board for the dump box i figured it would time to figure out my own solution and try to keep the cost under $1000 for the entire modification. I had my local dealer quote the optional valve from Kubota at close to $2800 CAD installed which was a little to rich for my blood.

Before running out and spending a bunch of money i needed to investigate the hydraulic system on this new RTV as it is apparently different that the previous generation. Here is what i was able to figure out

-The new generation uses a single output hydraulic pump which draws from the aux oil reservoir under the passenger seat. it first runs to the hydraulic dump bed valve located near the back of the motor (which is now remotely cable operated unlike the previous generations). This valve now has a power beyond port on it that runs to the power steering system then to an oil cooler mounted at the front of the unit before returning to the tank.

- I Couldn't find any oil filtration for this circuit until i noticed that the HST now pulls oils from this same aux oil tank, which i am guessing is how Kubota chose to filter all of the circuits that use this oil reservoir. This is a big change from the older style unit which had the HST sharing oil with the transmission. A big word of caution to any newer model users, both the operator and service manuals both show checking the oil level for the HST by the dip stick at the back of the transmission. This wont tell you if your HST is low on oil (only the actual transmission gear case). Remember to check your aux oil reservoir any time you play with the HST to verify it has enough oil or you could cause an expensive HST repair bill.

- Now that i had a understanding of the hydraulic circuits it was time to plan my build. I chose not to play with the existing valve for the hydraulic dump circuit. Instead i bought a new 3 spool open center valve with a power beyond port on it. I tied it in series to the circuit between the existing dump bed valve and the hydraulic steering system. Its pressure relief was set to 2000 psi slightly higher than the relief on the hydraulic dump bed valve. I only need 2 spools for my blade functions but the 3 spool version was on sale (and cheaper than the 2 spool version) and I always like that "future expansion" function.

- I chose to mount the valve under the drivers side seat right beside the existing dump bed controls. I had some custom hoses made that run up to the front bumper of the unit with 4 quick disconnects. I routed the lines neatly and covered them in fabric hose protector. The oil tank had a spare return port on it that was plugged off so it was quite easy to tie in the tank line back from the new valve bank.

- I fabricated a blade lifting mount that slides into the 2" receiver on the front of the unit so it could be easily removed in the winter. My blade manufacturer didn't have a mount design for this new model so i ended up getting a couple parts laser cut and welded up a blade mount that fits on the front of the RTV. I went with a single 1.5" X 6" bore cylinder for the blade lift.

- For the blade tilt i ended up fabricating some cylinder mounting pins to the blade push tube which accommodate dual 1.25" X 6" cylinders.

The build and installation in now complete and after testing it out i am very happy! The blade movements are nice and responsive for me ( you dont even notice the load on the machine) and i was able to push around some light loam in my yard very easily with it. I cant wait to try it out this winter!

I will have a link to some pictures shortly for anyone that wants to see how it turned out. The total project build came it under $900 CAD including taxes.

I am very happy with the unit in general, the new ROPS is makes loading the bed much easier and the ride quality is much smoother than my previous unit.

Newbie with questions

Hello, what a great place! Lots of info in here.

I currently have 224WS square baler and it's proven very reliable. I use a Kubota M6800 to pull it and everything is happy. The problem is I am tired of the dust and dirt. I will be upgrading tractors ASAP in an effort to get a cab. I have found some M6800 cabs but I am afraid if I also purchase a round baler in the near future, which I intend to do, that the M6800 won't be able to handle it. I have located a M8200 which I think would be a good one to use to bale with but thought I better get other opinions. I have also found several 9540, but those really haven't came down to my price range. Kubotas are popular around here so that is what I see most of. I'm sure there are other brands, but I don't know which ones to stay away from.

The second part to my question concerns balers. I have looked at several used balers and I don't know one thing about any of them, but not afraid to learn. I have looked at a Vermeer 605J, a 604?, and a NH644. Anyone have any recommendations on these? I've read about monitors vs hand control, String vs Net and I am not sure which direction to take. I've read to be sure and get certain balers with pressure monitors. Can someone explain that? I won't be doing a ton of baling but it is something I want to do for myself as well as some others nearby. I will keep my square baler for the horse people as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Sorry, if some of these questions have obvious answers, but I am new to this.

Thanks in advance,

BL

Can you tell the difference?

dimanche 25 septembre 2016

Can you tell the difference between pure orchard grass that has been rebaled from round to square? I am still trying to figure out the best system for my hay operation. Rebaling would make my life so much simpler, but looks and flake retention must be the same for my customers.

Vermeer Rebel Chains

This is my 3rd year to ever bale hay.   I've baled about 500 bales on this used baler.  It's worked great.  This last week while baling really dry heavy coastal I had trouble getting bales started.  I kept plugging the baler.  Once a bale was started it worked perfectly.   After cleaning the baler I noticed the chains are really loose(I think).  I posted pictures.  One is the starter feeder.  It wasn't off the sprocket but I moved to show how loose it was.  The other is a drive wheel while running.  They look real loose.   Should I take a link out or do you replace the chain.  Trying to learn what is normal.

DAMAGE CONTROL

As y'all know it's been raining plenty here in southeast texas. I made my last cutting with 18'to 24' minimum hay. Taller in places. Had no choice. Too wet to cut sooner plus work schedule. etc.

10 acres worth, it's cut and raked forecast says no rain. Well they were wrong. Overnight get about 3/4".

So i flip it the next day with the side rake and try to bale following day but too wet. So I decide to shred it but it's too thick.

So I ted it out and it gets rained on again, this time worse. So I've got 10 acres of matted down hay.

What do I do now? Can't shred cause it's to low to the ground. We're gonna have 4-5 days of clear weather.  Maybe.

Possibe I could cut again if I can clear up this mess.  There is black mold growing already.

Thanks

Jeff

What to plant

I've got a tricky situation with a feild that we picked up last year. The feild is 20 acres, it sits in bottom ground and gets flooded in spots annually. We bale nothing but small squares so I rule out Reed canary immediately. Around here smooth brome is king as far as marketing is concerned. Anybody know how good SB does in wet ground. Another down side to the feild is the fact that it sits dead center of town (Lincoln NE) so bringing 14ft swather, baler, and tractor is a PITA. For this reason, I would like to plant a one cut wonder grass, not alfalfa or any multiple cut grass

First Big Square Baler

Hi, I'm new the the forum. I'm a commercial hay producer in Western NC and am looking at going to a big baler for this coming year. I currently bale with a John Deere 468 and also rebale with my cousin's Massey inline baler. We are baling around 35-40 thousand small squares a year. There are zero big balers in our region and we have no knowledge on them. I'm on a budget for a baler and tractor of around 95k, so what's the best setup for that money? And how many bales are to many for a big baler? We have some hills and I'm looking at going with a 3x3 baler and 150hp tractor. Thinking about a hesston 4760 baler. But I've seen some krone machines for 55-60k advertised, ate they worth it with 40k bales on them? I'm a young producer(25 yr old) and need to make a very sound purchase. I don't have the money to screw this up. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Splicing wire fencing

vendredi 23 septembre 2016

I noticed this forum with respect to splicing wire fencing ideas. From what I have found, crimp splices are only a temporary fix which isn't good if you are protecting your investment and tying wire fencing can be difficult especially with high tensile or old/brittle wire that will break. Check out this link to Ranchmate ( http://ift.tt/2ctaTcM). If the DOT specifies a "Western Union Splice" that is a method, than Ranchmate' Twist Splices would be the easiest and strongest splice available with no tools needed. Average retail cost per pair of inline splices is only around $1.99 each. These splices are a preformed western union splice that you would use and are the exact same products (Shrunk down) as what the power and energy companies use to splice/repair power lines and cables. Products like these are significantly better than a method that might be incorrectly applied.. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Dry Hay Preservative

Does anyone use a hay preservative in a dry form?  I have been using Hayguard for 2 years now and I'm not convinced it is the best product.  They advertise it as "non" corrosive, but that is very far from the truth.  Also on a windy day I end up with more on the tractor and baler than on the hay.  I have heard of guys using a granular type preservative but I can't seem to find much information about it.

kubota help all around!

ok fellas, I bought a used 2005 rtv 900 at auction, all kinds of problems with this money pit and im trying to get her purring again as cheap as possible. I got it with a cracked head, replaced it and had a mechanic get her running. now I have massive rattling in the driveline. its a 1 piece driveshaft and completely worn out. I saw some nice links to fixes for a 2 piece shaft with u-joints, but I don't have u-joints on old shaft. I am trying to buy the replacement oem shafts and support bearing that attaches to frame, but I cant seem to find the serial number, as the data plate has been removed or fell off. the only serial number that I can see is 50958 written on the left frame rail under the dump bed and a serial number on the back of the cage reading 50589. can anyone help me with part numbers of assembly numbers or any info on this Kubota. any help to do this as cheap as possible would be great. thanks for any help.

Haying hillsides

My fields are flat, which is rare in Pennsylvania. Three neighbors have offered me their fields, and two are hilly.

I have never rolled a tractor, and never plan to. I have mowed some steep side hills with a brush hog, and I have turned downhill when I didn't like the way ot feels. No problems, i can mow up and down, or just skip it.
Haying is different. I want long straight stretches, and I have different implements.
How do haying implements affect stability on side hills?
I have an offset mower, its a rotary scythe. Its low to the ground, and I think it could only push me by the drawbar, and maybe make me slide downhill.

I also have a round baler, a Vermeer 605c. That thing looks tall enough to roll. Do round balers ever slide sideways downhill, or do they have enough traction to track straight?

Has anybody ever rolled while haying?

Any tips to keep me upright?

These hills are not as steep as some that I see folks haying, but they are steep to me. The good thing is they level out as you go down hill, so I can turn downhill and not hit anything.

Best was to pick up small squares

I have a 10 acer field that I am planning on dedicating to quality square bales next season i will have a barn that is in the field so i will stack it straight into the barn from the field. I am pretty much a 1 man operation and I was wanting to know what works best for everybody. I had planes on building a acumalator grapler this winter but was wondering if I would be better off building a acumalator to go on my front end loader of my tractor and then build just a grapler to pick it up and stack it in and out of the barn. Just was wondering what seams to work the best. Thanks and pic would be great.

How much moister can you have when chopping grass for feed? And how good are the NewHolland 790 choppers?

Question for the chopper guys;

New Holland haybines

I'm looking to buy a used haybine for less than 3000. I see that there are lots of models to choose from. Is there any models to run away from. Is there one that's best that I should look for.

I am in need of a service manual to take out the HST from my tractor. I'm down to the splitting of the tractor but it will not separate, It moves about a 1/2" and I do not want to create any damage. All of the hydraulic lines are off and the test pipes are out still it will not separate.

Suggestions for discbine

Hey everyone!

After a trying year cutting some of my fields at < 1mph (and still getting bindups), I think it's time to say goodbye to the old sicklebar mower! Paint color isn't a big issue, but would prefer something that'll run on my Agco LT75, and preferably 540rpm (just to save swapping shafts just for the mower).

I know I'm not going to get a lot of width with only 75hp, but would still like to have at least a 9' cutting deck. Any comments on brands/models to look at?

I run 40ac of alfalfa and 30ac of Orchard grass/alfalfa mix, so I'm torn on conditioning mechanism are rollers still the go-to? or would impeller do fine too?

Thanks in advance!

L35 GST grinds and will not engage

I have an L35 (late 1990's) with the GST. It has 2k plus hours on it, with the last 200 or so mine. Since I owned it, I have had to use the clutch to shift between forward and reverse with the left hand shuttle shift (the lever on the steering column) The gear changing from 0 through 8 (still) works fine without having to depress the clutch. I have developed the problem of the forward/reverse shift grinds and will not engage either direction even with the clutch fully depressed. If I put the gear shift into 0 position, I can then shift between forward and reverse.

The clutch does have the throw out bearing noise when sitting in neutral, but feels like it is working OK. The clutch holds fine with no slipping in any gear and all hydraulic operations work, including steering. 2wd to 4wd shift also works fine.

I am hoping that someone can give me some idea on what to look for to either adjust or replace, preferably without having to split the machine. I can live with the throwout bearing noise if it saves me from pulling everything apart. Bringing it to the local dealer is a last resort as the cost to have them work on it is extremely expensive.

NH 273 Hayliner Issues

I'm out of ideas. A couple years back, we purchased a used 273 in "cosmetically" good condition. After our first season with this baler we learned it was rather finicky. Baled the second season after some minor adjustments, and all was well. Baled the 1st cut this season. Hay was put up. Baler was left untouched in baling condition and now we are having a problem after attempts at baling our second cut. The problem seems simple but we can't figure it out. From the first bale out and every one thereafter, the knots are coming out only half completed and "cut" approximately 1" after the knot (towards tractor) on both twines. There is no chaff or other indication that the twine is breaking or getting roughed up by jagged metals. The twine fingers are clean, bill hooks seem to have decent tension, and twine holders are also snug, and no excessive wear found. Here is the kicker. If I have someone run a dry cycle manually and pull tension on the #1 twine to simulate a bale, it ties perfectly. Put hay down the chute, and nothing. I have also adjusted the pressure to the bales in both directions as much as anyone should, and it seems all timing indicators are within their respective limits. Any thoughts?

note: second cut is about as lush as the first, as we have had crap for rain this year in western mass.

Weather apps and local weather - what's the deal !!!

At least in south GA this hay season, the weather apps and the local news weather dept have been worthless for precept forecasts 36-48 hrs in advance. And nobody ever admits they blew it !! Just show up day after day make forecasts Smile and joke around and never acknowledge their inability to be right on any consistent basis. How does one plan field work without some amount of accuracy ?? Call this venting or blowing off , is the weather more predictable where you live and farm?? Maybe the mid west weather is easier to get right at least most of the time. So how's it been for you ??

Educate me on planters

Going to be planting corn this coming year for the first time so I'm going to be in the market for a nice used planter. Besides corn I can also see myself planting milo in the near future and may even end up planting as much or more milo than corn. Most likely will continue planting beans with a drill to stay with narrower rows.

I don't know much of anything about a planter so I need some help and guidance on what to look for. I am familiar with a drill but a planter seems to be much more complicated. I have been doing some research on planters and looking through sales literature and it appears to me there are a lot of different ways a planter can be equipped and I'm not sure what options will be best for my situation. I have also talked to the JD salesman about how I would need it equipped but I also wanted to get some opinions from someone that isn't trying to sell me something. He suggested a 1750 planter. Unless another brand has a considerably better planter I will most likely buy a JD because dealer support is far and above other brands for row crop equipment.

It has been suggested than I buy a vacuum planter rather than finger pickup. I was told finger pickup is still very good for corn but a vacuum planter is better in other crops than a finger pickup. Are unit mounted or frame mounted coulters better? Most of my soils are a gravely clay with a lot of rocks which gets very hard when dry and sticky when wet. Dry vs liquid fertilize? What all other options would I want?

Also how important is it to have a planter that matches the size of your corn head? Planning on upsizing my combine this year or maybe next depending on how harvest turns out this year so that will be a consideration.

Planting, do I need to drag?

I am planting Timothy,Orchard Grass, and Brome today. I am using a three point broadcast spreader. Soil is clay to clay loam, it varies across the field.
We are to get some rain today, possible thunderstorms. Will the rain cover the seed enough, or should I stick to my plan and drag some cattle panels?
Should I wait to see how much rain we get, and drag tomorrow?

Thanks

Calf feeding questions

Hi all, This will get a few chuckles from the crowd here but I half to start somewhere right.....

My first calf arrived yesterday, I bought her from my next door farmer not the sale barn....

She weights around 5-600# now, born this spring, has had her first 6 way shot & worming... not sure the date right now....

She will be in with my horses after she gets use to the place but for now I have her in a acre paddock with free choice hay & grass..  I plan to start feeding her tor a couple reasons, weight gain and to tame her down to be able to handle her.

The plan is to breed her next year..

I will be buying my feed from this place   http://ift.tt/2cJIsTy;...

I want the best, I think I can afford to start her off the best I can so I want the experts advice here, not my cheap friends advice...

Will hand feed her twice daily, @ 600#, how much should I feed her, I read 1-2lbs of feed per day based on body weight, so that equates to 6-12 lbs of feed per day or less to start with correct ??

What about adding minerals ... what & how often ...

I already have several salt blocks out ....

Vacs --- what's net & when...

I was thinking the " cpc supreme 16%  in the link... I don't know the cost yet per bulk sack for this..

Also, I want to start feeding a systemic ?? type fly stuff but have no idea in this area, I like the idea of feeding something that will help with fly control & other pests...    help me in this area also please as I am a noob and want the good feeding habits for cattle....

Thanks, Chris

EPA Says Glyphosate Not Likely Carcinogenic

Answer to TxJim

The thing to remember when I state bales, I deal mainly with 5 x 6 balers with the average bale size in the 66 to 70 range.  In other words the replacement interval decreases as the baler size increases.  You have less bales, per ton, with a 5 x 6 baler then you do with a 4 x 5 baler etc.

The 600 series balers will go between 8 and 10000.  A few have gone more.  The lower idler gear usually will need replacing at 5000 bales.  That varies somewhat since the later balers used a larger idler so it did not turn the revolutions that the smaller idler did.  The 600 series used three sledge roll gears and two idlers.

The BR balers I can not tell you how long they will last since I do not know of any being replaced for wear.  I know some balers have 15 to 20000 on the original gears.  The BR balers have two sledge roll gears and one idler.  The most wear on the 600 series balers were the lower and middle sledge roll gears and the idler between them.  Since the lower sledge roll, stationary roll, in the BR balers is driven separately now the wear on the remaining sledge roll gears is greatly reduced.

Need help from C/NH discbine gurus

I have a CIH Dcx131 which has the modular NH gearbox system. I have knife tips that are hitting each other and I realize that I have twisted connecting shafts, have bought the correct shafts but I'm a newbie when it comes to working on these things. Luckily the ones I need to replace are the end rod on either side , but does anyone have tips for doing this? TIA

teff seed

We are looking for a good variety of teff suitable for growing for flour. So far the seed that come through the system has had pour germination 55% or less. Any information on harvesting would be greatly appreciated. There is a variety of teff here called lovegrass and in my state its considered a noxious weed. Apparently the grain variety is somewhat different yield to the hay variety waldo

Hay needles on JD 348 not returning to home position

Does anyone know what will cause the hay needles to not return to the home position when baling.  I had this happen twice yesterday baling bermuda hay.  The hay was properly dry for baling.  When this happens the crank stop will not retract and this causes the flywheel shear bolt to shear.

Maxam mowers

I thinking of replacing my Lely disc mower with a Maxam mower.

The Maxam is a simple drum mower with wilter/conditioner/spreader attached.

It appeals to me because it's a very simple design with all the "running gear" on the top of the mower rather than buried in a disc mower bed which makes me nervous.

Also, the mower sits entirely behind the tractor for the same cutting width as my Lely. The Maxam doesn't need to be folded for transport.

Most of my work is mowing small blocks, so I spend a lot of time getting through gates.

I like the idea of a simple, robust mower that I can easily maintain myself rather than a disc mower which I can't really repair myself, except for blade replacement or lubing the modules.

They're made here in NZ and exported to USA, so it's possible you've never heard of them.

More info here : www.maxam.net.nz

Has anyone here used a Maxam ?

Any thoughts ?

Milkweed, how much is too much?

I just acquired some nice 2nd crop grass hay, but some of the bales are loaded with milkweed.

I have had milkweed in some of my hay land over the years, but not enough to be a problem.

Some of these bales have enough milkweed that it is obvious in the bale!

When reading about it, it's enough to scare you to death!

I'm just wondering what your experiences have been!

Thanks much, Dave

new holladn 570 baler double knotting ??

I have a NH 570 bales that keeps giving me fits. The dealer has been out twice and can not get it to work correctly.

The baler is not tying correctly. it leaves a double knot and a long piece of twine hanging.   it looks like the swiper arm isn't pulling the original knot out of the bill hook and then it breaks the string and ties again.  I have adjusted and adjusted and I am stumped.  I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to repair this issue.

Deere 2320 - looking for a hay head

I am in the business of wildlife habitat establishment/enhancement, but also cut a little hay for my wife's horses, and the neighbor - only put up about 40 acres a couple times a year - have been using an older Hesston hydroswing to cut, but would prefer a self-propelled - found a decent Deere 2320, but it has a draper head on it - would like to find a 240 or 300a auger head for it - any ideas on where to find one?  Will a hay head off of a Deere hydroswing work?

Thanks!

R23 Vermeer rake

I've searched here and found a few little threads regarding an R23 rake, but wanted a little more up to date info. I wanted a rotary rake, but after my thread on that, kinda decided against it as I don't need something else to slow me down, I'm slow enough already. I realize the 2300 or 2800 is newer/heavier, but how has performance been with the 23? Cost is an issue otherwise I'd buy a new R2300 or a Twinstar.

Cost to Keep a Cow Per Year?

mercredi 14 septembre 2016

How much do you figure it costs you to keep each cow per year? Not including the initial cost of the cow.

Some fellow cattle owners were discussing the annual costs involved and one guy said research says we have $450 per year in a cow if done right. Feed/hay, minerals, deworming, property taxes on hay and pasture ground etc.

He said the study said some got by with $350 per but skimped in some areas.

If $450 is close then a $500 calf does not leave much incentive to stay on the cow-calf side.

to wet to take last cutting Alfalfa

I have 20 acres of Alfalfa that was cut 40 days ago ground is very wet and will track if I try to cut the hay. With all the rain there is heavy growth, my question is will the extra growth increase winter kill if I don't remove the hay this fall? It is too close to frost date to try cut and have enough regrowth for winter.

Hay moisture readings

I just cut and square baled my coastal bermuda hay field. I did the twist test like always before raking all seemed a go. As i started baling i stopped and checked moisture readings all bales from start to finish tested 11-14 percent moisture. I put hay in barn and the next day (today) all moisture readings are 20-22 percent. I've never had that happen so I'm a bit worried! What gives?

Wet soil

mardi 13 septembre 2016

We have a portion of our field that has water real close to the surface, and it is drowning out the alfalfa.  We have been thinking of planting some sort of grass there, but don't know what to go with.  The guy at the Co-Op recommended garrison grass.  what do you guys think would work.  We have drain lines in the field; in fact we added one a few years ago.  Maybe we put it to deep, but it does run a fair amount of water, so it is taking some out.  You dig down about a foot and half to two feet and you hit water.  Is just does not seem it can get down the the drain line.  It would help if the ditch company would like the canal, but that is not going to happen for a long time.  I would like to know what my options are.

Pawnee orchard grass

I'm wanting to find some Pawnee orchard grass seed to plant this fall and am not having any luck finding some locally. It is sold by Allied Seed and I even contacted the rep for this area and he wasn't of much help......tried to talk me into buying a variety I did not want because that is what they generally sell in this region. I was wondering if anyone on here might know of a place in your area that sells Pawnee and would ship be some seed.

Vermeer 606C and some hay questions

I bought a Vermeer 605c in July. Last month, I made some junk hay in a neighbor's field, lots of goldenrod in the grass. The baler worked fine, and I got the weeds off and good grass growing there.

Now I am trying to make a second cut in my own field. It was baled in May. We had a drought, so the grass was short and thin. I cut on a Saturday, more than a week ago. Between heavy dew, unexpected long hours at work and two rains, I still haven't baled it. It got rain after after I raked it, and I have no tedder, yet.

So the windrows are dark brown, moldy junk. That's OK, I can use it in the garden, and I want it off of the field.
Tonight, I thought it was dry enough. Every attempted bale clogged the baler above throat. It wasn't clogging between the feed rollers, but just above them. Sometimes the bale would roll out of round, other times it would roll round, but still plug. The bale would stop rolling, and the belts would slip, then stop.

Is this what I can expect from short hay, or rained on hay, or just too wet hay? The baler worked fine for me on longer, faster dried hay.

Any tips on unclogging? I think a broom handle to push the wads would help.
Is there a safe, quick way to lock the tailgate up on a 605c?

Is there a best way to burn a windrow of junk hay?

Thanks

RTV500 Sloppy Steering

I started off with a RTV-x900 which I decided I didn't want to share haha. Since then I purchased a RTV-500 for light duty use which now has 150 hours.

I just actually spent some time riding it and the steering seems off. Almost like there is too much play and too much range of motion to get the unit to turn. Also when holding the wheel with spokes centered, the RTV veers to the right.

How do these units steer? Is there something off with my unit or am I just spoiled with the X900 power steering?

Thanks

Army worms in alfalfa

dimanche 11 septembre 2016

In our area, almost everyone is fighting army worms in their well-fertilized bermudagrasses. I spent most of the last week trying to control them. Every day I would drive the fenceline around the alfalfa patch and noted no army worms. Finally, a couple of days ago, I began noticing a declining green coloration going to yellowish green in the interior of the alfalfa field. Today, I walked into the field and found the yellowish green coloration was because army worms had stripped the leaves off the alfalfa, leaving the stems. For some reason, the first 50 or so feet in from the fence didn't have army worms just yet and that's the reason I failed to catch the infestation. There goes the sixth cutting.

So today, the ass fell into the well and I had to get out the sprayer and kill the army worms on Sunday. Army worm moths were flying everywhere around the tractor as I sprayed. Hopefully, I killed all those suckers using Tombstone at about 4.5 oz per ac, a bit higher than the recommended rate. Maybe more leaves will grow and and still allow me to make a cutting before Oct. 1, the cut off date to allow the alfalfa to have six weeks growth before the average first frost date of Nov. 15th.

650 new holland baler tying issues again

I've had some help on this earlier this year. What's it's doing again is it'll tie and cut twine then it'll retrip and do it again. Sometimes 4 or 5 times. I think that little roller may be the problem. I've took clutch of and turned it one spline but didn't help much. I'll add couple pictures of it in home position and see if the roller looks like it's in the right spot. The manual says something about adding shims. What and how is this done. Thanks image.jpeg

New RTVX1140 Observations...

I traded off my Rtv1140...2010 model with about 1700 hours and picked up the new rtvx1140. We use these to check cattle mainly. After two days of ownership...and about 40 miles we sure are surprised how much better the ride is compared to the old one. In rough pastures that old one would make you chip a tooth. It looks like the radiator on this new one is about 100% better (larger and under hood) than the old side radiatior. We were always blowing out the radiator on the old one...and even when it was clean...after about 5 miles at 25mph is would start moving the guage over to the red. Looks like this one is 4 lug wheels and old one was 5? My dealer was out of tops but should have me one this week... I really like the tilt wheel.
Anyways...I don't think the cattle give a damn which one I was on (as long as I hand out a few cubes) but I think this one is a big step up from the last.

Hay Season is over here.

Laid down 32 acres last week. I was using my Vermeer 504 to bale it with and we were averaging almost 7 bales per acre which is just astounding for around here.  The only fertilizer it got was turkey litter in the spring.  Anyhow, I had just dropped bale number 207 and the baler plugged up starting 208... looked back and saw smoke, popped open the bale chamber and saw flames, doused it with my water jug fast as I could then dragged burning hay out and stomped it out with boots... I think I just used up 10 years worth of Lucky Charms in about 5 minutes. Got the fire out, told the hired hand hay season was over, and all that's left to do is go down there and rake up about 12-15 bales worth of hay and burn it, because hay isn't worth enough around here to be worth it this year. Still can't believe that baler didn't burn to the ground.

Mowing Speed for Alfalfa

samedi 10 septembre 2016

Hi, I'm new here, and kind of new to agriculture as well. What kind of ground speed do you travel at with a discbine? Seems as though it cuts great no matter how fast I go as long as my body can handle it. Our mowing tractor is a JD 4430 cab tractor, mow at WOT. Learning the machine I started out in B 1-2, and gradually increased speed as I found comfortable with making the corners at the end of the row.

For those not familiar with these tractors, the gearing is A 1-2, A 3-4, B 1-2, C 1-2, B 3-4, D 1-2, C 3-4, and D 3-4 in progressive order of ground speed. I got up to C 3-4 whereas my boss only ever tried as fast as B 3-4. Beats me up quite a bit even with a quite level field, but it sure makes quick work. Cut is clean once I put new blades on all the heads, but it skips when it hits the gopher mounds as would be expected no matter the speed. C 4 I am guessing is probably 12 mph maybe a hair more.

Seems to me as though the cut isn't quite as clean if I slow the ground speed down. Is it better to beat myself up a bit in the cab and go as fast as I can for the cleanest cut or is that hurting the machine to push it that far?

Mowing Speed for Alfalfa

Dion Choppers?

Anybody use a Dion for chopping corn? We have a 3 row head on the machine, brand new. I'm entirely new to agriculture although I do have a lot of mechanical experience. I am a bit surprised at the amount of buildup the machine experiences. Have thrown the chain twice that runs the right side head on the machine in only about 15 acres.

Setting the tractor at 2 mph and it automatically compensates when it can't handle the load anymore. This is a New Holland 270 hp tractor. Granted this is with corn that isn't dried out yet. But I am a bit surprised our big tractor can barely handle it and a brand new $120k machine has issues in it.

Dormant or Dead Timothy?

Don't know how the weather is in your neck of the woods, but here in the western mountains of VA, it's dry as a crispy potato chip. We haven't had a steady rain for weeks, continuous hot weather too. Creek that runs along the edge of the property is low enough to walk across on the exposed rocks.

Looking out over one of my Climax Timothy fields, the Timothy grass is just about 90% brown. Looks like someone hit with roundup. The Clair Timothy field is in some better shape, but not much.

First time growing Timothy. Question is - am I looking at a typical dormant Timothy field or a dead Timothy field?

What can I expect in the coming weeks, assuming there is rain?

Thanks!
Bill

What to plant after Alfalfa

Next year we have another field we are going need to break up and replant.  What would be good crop to plant, besides oats.  Several years ago we panted barley as a cover crop, but you only get one cutting.  With oats I can at least get two.  Just wondering what my other options are.

Bought a 688 baler have a few questions

vendredi 9 septembre 2016

Hello,

I bought a New Holland 688 with 12,500 bales on it very nice shape always been stored inside.  Has bale command plus.  I will be putting up 500 bales per year max

I am a flat lander will my JD 2755 MFWD handle this baler.  I think it will but someone out there has had the 2 hooked up before.

It has gathering wheels, my fields are flat and smooth.  Not sure if i need them, what are your thoughts.

Can i add net wrap?  This is not a bid deal but might be interested later.

Spot Spraying Question

Looking out over my dormant Timothy field, seeing a few milkweed plants spring up. Not so many that I can't walk around and hit them with a hand sprayer and roundup.

Question is - we're in September - when is the best time to hit milkweed with roundup? Will probably encounter a touch of horse nettle too. Round up effective this time of year on it too?

Thanks,
Bill

Thoughts?

Fleet farm was lacking sickles I am used to. I need about 50. They had 40 of these... thinking of using these and normal ones on the other end. I would like to cut as soon as it dries out for a couple days. If possible. Need new sickles though. Were pretty rough by end of last cut. Cutting mostly alfalfa now, but heavy grass on first cut next year.

Will these work? Or time to return and shop elsewhere?

Thoughts?

New Pasture questions

Leased 80 acres in SW Comanche county Oklahoma fenced in 26 of this (picture attached), planning on only running cows on this land. Recently shredded the 5 foot tall weeds (mares tail, sun flower and what is in the picture) to expose some really nice grasses, looks like Bermuda then sprayed with 2-4d and triple 10 fertilizer. What should be my next move?

Thanks in advance.

Questions and Answers about my NH Repair Procedures

Ralph, I agree about the dirty conditions, but unfortunately I just do not have the time I am taking the photos off actual units that need to get back into the field.  I intend to update the photos as I go along when I can get a better photo. I should get better photos this winter when the balers come in more or less cleaner.  For now I just want to get started and make things better as I go.

The reason I went with a pdf format is because you can enlarge the photos with less distortion to the photo than jpeg files.  If you did not try an enlarge the photos then see what that does for the clarity.

DIY carry BIG things

I'm poor. So got to thinking about how to carry big things on the back of the box blade. It's simple too. Quick mount and unmount as well.

Crop Rotation

I was talking with the neighbor this evening and he was tell me that he thinks we were nuts for not putting our hay field back into alfalfa this spring.  We were told by the local CO-OP to rotate to something else, so we planted oats this spring, and plan on planting RR alfalfa next spring.  One thing about this neighbor, he is a know it all, and he has never planted anything but alfalfa for the last 10 15 years.  What are the advantages to rotating to something else for a year?

Vermeer 554XL, Bale Start/Belt Flip Problem

I have a vermeer 554xl with wide pickup.

If I attempt to start a bale at "full speed" ie roughly 4 miles per hour, sometimes the bale wont start and belt flips.  I have tried pto from 300 rpms to 540 rpms, but sometimes it will not start the bale.  So rather than chance pulling a plug, I have been starting bales with 400ish rpms and clutchingfonce or twice within the first 15's so the core will spin, and basically no belt/ flips/plugs.

To be specific about plug, basically I encounter one problem: the bale fails to start and hay seems to wad up in at the far right edge of the chamber (ie passenger side), causing the 14" belt to flip inwards on itself.  The bale is not turning inside, but the belts are turning.  It is always the right side belt that flips (ie passenger side of baler), and always flips inward with hay expanding up between the belt and chamber wall.  I will look closer, maybe 1 or 2 teeth are missing at that location, but in general teeth are in good shape.  Can anyone help me hone in on this specific belt flip/bale start problem.  Local dealer does have any "real" information, Darryl at Vermeer said XL baler should not require "slow start or clutching", and I agree, I dont like clutching.  I have been told to check teeth, cam bearings, starter roller clearance, and be sure the belts ARE turning with no hay in chamber.  Per my other recent post, I am trying to check cam bearings, as I am not familiar with that.

  • Teeth are in pretty good shape, as i replaced about 1/2 of them a year ago (all that were weak or broke at that time).
  • (2) 14" outer belts (very new), (2) 6" inner belts (still pliable and light texture) so belts seem good (all same length, 440")
  • Starter roller is turning, bolts are not sheared
  • Starter roller is within 2 3/4 to 3" of teeth (I plan to adjust all the way down to 2 1/2)
  • I have never run the baler with the wind guard on, as when i bought it used it was off, and the prior owner said "just one more thing to take off when it plugs" (he was having plug problems because of missing/weak teeth)
  • Does the wind gaurd help with any problems, I have it but just have not bothered to put it back on?
  • Again, it is always the same belt and same side of belt that flips and thus plugs.  So to me it seems like there should be an isolated problem??
  • Windrows do not seem to be the problem, as they are usually wider then 4' baler as i max out the wide pickup?  I asked Darryl if I was possibly putting TOO much hay on outside, and he basically said you can never put too much on the edges "pack the walls and the rest will take care of itself".   But at the same time, if I recall, he said the belt runs to where there is not enough, and the belt is flipping inward?

Sorry for the long post, but I have read as many other related posts as I can, and I am trying to get to my specific problem.

Any specific advice on belt flip-no bale start is appreciated.

Vermeer 554XL Wide Pickup, Cam Track Bearings

Can anyone provide information/pointers on replacing cam track bearings on a Vermeer XL baler.  I have the 554XL with wide pickup.  I attempted to inspect as I have sporadic bale start problems if don't start into row slowly/clutch.

1) Vermeer said "if you can move the pickup back and forth a few inches, the bearings are gone".  My entire pickup does not move back in forth, if feels fine, I assume the reference is to each individual pickup bar.  Some appear to not move much, and some appear to move/rotate a few inches by hand.  That is, if i grab a single tooth and pull it forward, that single tine bar bar will rotate foward several inches, the "pickup assembly" itself is not moving or rotating.  What am I looking for?

2) On the "drivers side" of the baler, once I open cover to the wide pickup hatch, there appears to be a small inspection slot in which I believe I can see the cam track/bearings.  The baler only has 3,000 bales of grass hay, so I surprised that I even need bearings, but it is 12+ years old and was stored outside some of those years.  I seem to see some grooving in then cam track, is this going to be ok once i replace bearings, has anyone seen the need to replace the cam track itself?

3) Can you explain process/pointers of how to go about this changing of the cam bearings, and any other related advice.

As mentioned, I am trying to solve a bale start/belt flip problem that happens sometimes.

Spiking bale ?

I was wondering if you could use a bale spear in the side of a round bale to pick it up. our bales are 4x4. unfortunately due to the barn configuration i can fit more bales if i put two side by side with the long sides facing out. Or would it be better to then put teh second row turned on teh stack?

2016 is in the books!

Finished the last of my 3rd cutting yesterday with 305 bales or pristine og, weed free, crunchy dry, wind blowing @15 out of the NW with about 40% humidity and 90 degree air temp.  Even a fool can make beautiful hay with that kind of weather.   talk about miller time.  Then there was a couple of snorts of Bullit bourbon on the patio with my squeeze that helped me rake to finish last night.   Bone dry here for the first time this season with no rain in sight.  Going to make fall seeding a real challenge.  Should be planting new field this week but the ground is too dry.

Finishing hay season is bittersweet.  Kind of like vacations, anxious to start, love to go, love to get home more.  Same with family visiting, love for them to come ready for them to leave.  Oh, well, time for some fun, certainly hasn't been much time for that the last several months.  time to start thinking about hunting and cutting firewood, may clean off some machinery but it is in pretty good shape right now.  Good luck to you blokes still trying to get that last hay done.

Life is good.   rick

Need help with slip clutch

Hello, not exactly hay, but I do use this machine on hay field verges

I have a Farm King 720 3 pt. hitch brush mower, bought it new, it has worked well for 2 years.

Once in a while I've "stalled" the blades on a clump of dirt or a stump, caused the slip clutch to do it's job and save the gearbox and driveline.

When this happens, I don't always notice right away so the clutch will begin to smoke.

Lately though, it seems to take less to stall it out and the clutch smokes right away.

I have looked through the manual and online, but have not found any info on how to adjust the slip clutch so that it does not slip too easily.

Any suggestions?

Rolled Some Tifton 85

mardi 6 septembre 2016

A friend has the only Tifton 85 Bermudagrass I know of in this county. Not supposed to grow this far north. Only 5 acres.

He does not need the hay and fired the last free guy that baled. He had shredded it high a couple of times this year and asked if I wanted to cut it for hay.

All I have ever seen were pictures of Tifton. This had lodged pretty badly and the disc mower glided over a good bit.

Needless to say I had to go slow when baling. We single raked the terraces, then V raked the middles, then came back with the rake and swept into small windrows what the baler missed.

Made 36  4x5 rolls on the 5 acres. Wish I could get it full time and cut every 30 days.

Story

This is a story of how one family came together to rescue 35 bales of hay.  The baler broke down yesterday with a little bit left to finish.  My dad and I fixed it this afternoon with kids underfoot.  I was unable to start baling until 7:15 when my wife got home.  I finished one windrow... of course the baler motor ran out of gas......  So I flew to the gas station and back it's almost dark.  I finished the last row with the headlights on and a storm bearing down! I parked the baler hooked up the wagon headed back to the field with 35 squares in the balance! My wife was on the tractor and I was throwing bales on the wagon.  We got back to the barn and frantically started throwing and stacking! With the last few bales to go the heavens opened up and it started to pour! We quickly finished and headed for cover.  MISSION COMPLETED! Ithought it was pretty funny that we did all that for 35 squares but it made for a nice story lol.

Should I spray for Army worms?

I cut and put up about 35 acres of Bermuda hay last weekend.  Some neighbors have reported army worms but I did not see very many in the field when I did my walk throughs.  Now that I have harvested this cutting I going to put on some fertilizer and take my wife on a trip out west to Flag Staff, Las Vegas, St George, Monument Valley, etc and won't return till the first week of Oct.  Since I won't be there to check for army worms on my new cut fields should I spray down any herbicides before I leave.  Don't expect much hay growth while I'm gone but don't want to have any damages to my established fields.  Thought of having my neighbors call me if they are spraying and having a custom sprayer spray it for me while I'm gone.  Any thoughts or suggestions.  Thanks.

New Holland 133 Stackliner problem & solution

I have one of Alf Roeder's New Holland 133 Stackliners.  Tom Stallbaumer personally delivered it about 5 years ago towing it all the way from Seneca Kansas to my ranch in East Texas.  For the last five years it has been bullet proof and except for new tires it has been maintenance free. Starting on my first cutting this year I had lingering problems with the first table stalling in the up position against the second table and stalling on the second table when fully loaded with 15 bales.  The result was frequent jamming in the pickup chute and first table, etc.  Anyhow, this Saturday during a break I took it to the shop and used the air hose to blow out any dust, dirt, or hay and relube everything.  I had previously tried adjusting trip mechanisms without any luck.  By pure chance, I noticed a very small spring broken on the trip mechanism underneath a larger spring.  I used some baling wire to reattach the spring and gave the 133 a test run.  Works like a champ again.  Thought I would share this info in case anyone with a Stackliner has similar problems.  We started putting up small square Bermuda bales at noon and had put over 1800 bales in the barn by 11pm.  Since I have a barn with 20ft joists, I just dump the hay in the barn and have a hay crew stack it by hand to 14 layers as the Stackliner only stacks up 7 levels.  Sure wish we had the Stackliner when I was a kid as it takes a lot of the hard work out of haying.  If I didn't have it, I'd be doing rounds only and cutting my hay profits in half.

At what speed should I drive my rotary windrower/swather?

I am in a sense settling a debate. This is the second year we have had our windrower. It is a John Deere rotary cut windrower. At the top end of its speed, it runs around 9.5 regularly and obviously down to quite slow. Based on driving it, it seems that we get a cleaner cut when we cut on the higher end of the speed range, 8-9.5, but my neighbor, who likes to offer his opinion though he doesn't grow hay, insists that I am driving too fast. He insists that we purchased the "wrong" kind of windrower and that we should have purchased a sickle bar cutter. Is there a magic speed at which I should be cutting or should I assume that I should travel at the speed the machine lets me drive? I should add that our fields have furrows, so at the end of each row I have to slow to a stop to get lined up for the next swath and I slow down a bit when it gets bumpy.

HP req for new idea/Agco/MF disc mowers

Hi all

I have a early '90s 3 point New Idea 5409 mower and would like to replace it.  I'm considering a New Idea 5209 pull type with conditioner.  It seems this is a very similar cutter bar to the 5409.  correct?

I use a JD 2640 (70 HP) and can mow my 20 ac level fields, 2/3 ton ac grass, at about 4/5 mph and I'm satisfied with this speed.

Do I have enough tractor to switch to a pull type like 5209?  I understand newer models have dipsticks to eliminate the need to remove the gearbox cover to check grease levels?  There are not any of these in area to go look at easily. I'm just shopping on the internet.  What year or serial number did that begin?

Any thoughts on which ones to look for ?

Thanks in advance

Mike 10 need help ...

Mike 10,

I have seen your help to others and hope that you can help me.  I bought a used BR7070 this summer and it has been one thing then another but I really do want to like this baler.  Here is my situation, when I bale (T4-115) and open the tailgate, you can feel the bale catch while the tailgate is opening and it will tear the net.  The tailgate opening does seem to slow or catch then will open up fully but by then the net is torn.  Previously you stated to someone about the bales on these pre pre-clutch balers about asking questions on the tailgate movement, etc...  cant find the thread again but you just posed questions, no fixes.

For mine, if I turn off the PTO and eject the bale - no problem, net stays in tact, bale looks good.  If I slow the baler speed down, you can still feel it catching and will try and tear the net.  So, in my opinion, it is the tailgate speed that causes the net to tear.  The tractor is new this year.  The bales are tight and seems to be holding pressure well.  Is there a way to speed up tailgate opening?  I am at a loss and the service techs at the local NH do not seem to have an answer.  Thanks,

Don
