Late Model Windrow Quality

mardi 11 juin 2019

Currently running two swathers, the one is an old Deere 4890 converted to a 6.8 engine and a 990 14"6" rotary head and the other is an R450 with a 14'6" 994 rotary head.

We are continuing to increase hay acres and would like to add another machine and be able to semi-retire the old 4890. We used to have a great Deere dealer but they were bought out a few years back and have been declining since. The local MacDon and Hesston dealer is great so we are kind of leaning that way, although Deere is still a viable option.

We have never been ecstatic about the windrow formation of our 990/994 but we have tinkered with different accelerators and blades and have made them tolerable. Of the newer machines, who makes the best windrow out of a 16' head? Conditioning isn't too important as we will be running a Circle C setup so they will be equal.

Our neighbor runs a Deere with a 500R and make a decent windrow but the edges are still a little heavy. Hesston is better from what I have seen, but there is still more hay in the edges than the center.

How about the MacDon R85? I have never been around one in the field, but I like the looks of their roller behind the cutter bar the best.

Any thoughts?
