Baler Question

samedi 22 juin 2019

Our farm is located in an area that is primarily wheat and cattle.  Annual rainfall is around 10-12".  Starting in 2010, we planted our first dryland alfalfa field and since then have grown the hay side of the farm to 2500ac of several types of hay (alfalfa, triticale, barley, pea mixes, etc).  It's become a good crop for us as we are well positioned to sell to the local cattle operations with a significant freight advantage.

Since we started small, we've used much older hay equipment than we do on the grain side of the operation.  We've been using a Hesston 4790 and for the most part have been happy with it.  However it is starting to show its age, we've rebuilt it a couple of times but we are starting to consider replacing it.  Since this is a major wheat growing area there are only a couple of brands selling hay equipment around us.  We have good local dealer support for John Deere and Claas.  A decent AgCo dealer is a couple hours away.  Thus we've looked at the L341 and the Claas Quadrant.  There are not many Claas balers out so I'm a little leary of them.  Mostly considering either the Deere or maybe another Massey/Hesston baler.  Just curious if anyone out there has experience with these brands.  Thanks for any info.
