Conditioner Roll Shims on 495 NH

I have a 495 that needs some adjustment on the conditioner roll spacing.  Probably looking at taking 2 shims out.  How close do most of you run the rolls?  

 

Is there an easy way to remove the shims without taking the entire tensioning system apart?  My tensioning rods are quite corroded and the one is completely seized.
