Spartan Zero Turn Issue

lundi 31 août 2020

I have had two minor problems with my Spartan Zero turn so far. One has been corrected, one soon will be.

One happened a couple of weeks back. I started it up drove it out of the garage. Engaged the PTO, it immediately died. I texted the dealer - mind you this was 7:00 at night. He told me a couple of things to try. They didn't work. He said he would be there in the morning to get it. 8:30 the next morning he was there. He suspected bad gas. I said, I could siphon and flush and refill. He said he would feel better if he did it and he said he didn't want it to feel like he was abandoning me. He took it back to the shop. Turns out there was one loose wire that was causing the motor to cut out. He checked everything else to make sure they were tight. I picked the mower up that night.

Second is the one still waiting to be fixed. I noticed a small mark of oil on the garage floor. He said I could bring it in any time and he would look at it. He cleaned the mower and ran it for about 10 minutes. He said it was a small seal leaking and could easily be replaced, but he needed permission from Spartan, but in the mean time I could use it. He called me today he has talked to Spartan, they don't want to replace the seal, the want the whole left transmission fixed. They said it is a new mower, the transmission shouldn't have to be taken apart already.

I'm happy the dealer stepped up on the one and found an issue and fixed it quickly and happy that Spartan is stepping up and not taking the cheap fix. As I've always heard, it isn't whether or not you have issues, it is how do you fix those issues.

New Holland 273 small square baler

First day on Haytalk as a member, however I have been using these forums as a tool for years.

I have gotten a New Holland 273 baler from our 97 year old neighbor, who last baled with this baler 19 years ago.  He swears it baled flawlessly back then and was stored in his barn ever since.  I don't have the manual for it and was wondering if there is a resource other than the local NH dealer for the manual.  Also, what do I need to specifically pay attention to other than the obvious (grease points, lubrication, broken parts, etc)?  I have a NH 276 manual, is it pretty close?

We cut and roll our own hay, but buy about 200 square bales per year to put up for emergencies, however, if this baler works, I will put up more as my barns allow.

Thoughts???

Help in Pricing Neighbors Help

I have had some neighbors go behind my back and pull my Ox out of the ditch. I need to figure how much to pay them, though none say they will accept payment. They will get paid.

Some you know I had a cow accident a while back and was just getting up to 100%. Aug 7 is was stopped making a left turn into my drive way and was rear ended at full speed. Lady never saw me. Got beat up pretty good, spent 5 days in the Trauma Ward. Lungs and brain bleeding and a broken vertebra. No spinal nerve damage. Have been home bound in an upper body brace. I am to have another Evaluation Oct 2. Learned last week I still have some internal issues but am expected complete recovery. I do not bounce as well as I once did.

I had been baling that day and got a light rain.
While I was in ICU, two neighbors tedded, then raked and baled the hay I had left. 67 rolls.
The next week some neighbors got with my son to do my next field. 4 large cab tractors showed up and cut 42 acres of hay. They tedded and when cured, 6 large tractors came to rake and bale. Made 184 large rolls of hay.

I heard a racket in the driveway and my wife said trucks were hauling hay. My son was unloading with the skid steer as load after load of hay was delivered. They hauled all 184 rolls.
One day you do not think things could get any worse. The next day you do not think they could get any better.

I am trying to explain to the insurance company how much my friends need to be paid. I intend to have their work figured in and will make certain each person gets their share.
Would you figure an hourly rate on each tractor/operator?
Would you figure the value per bale on the hay they made and hauled?
Any ideas and help in this is appreciated. I will check in as I can to listen to advice and opinions. Just now able to do much of this.
Thank You.

CNH web page for parts

CNH changed their web page and so far I hate it.  Looks like I have to re-enter my equipment (my tool shed),  plus I find the navigation terrible.    Thank goodness for Messick's site yet.  :)   The only problem with Messick's I get to see how much the smurf blue paint cost verses red. :(  In this case this part isn't even painted and it's going to cost over $1 more to order from NH vs CaseIH, with the identical part number even.  :o

Looking at putting a couple laterals up to replace wheellines on two sixty acres fields. Wondering if any of you have these and can shed some light on whether it’s worth it. I know they are expensive and some farmers either love them or hate them. Just looking for as much information as I can get. Thanks.

Forage production - budget estimator

vendredi 28 août 2020

A couple of years ago I posted my (technically Dana did) an Excel spreadsheet for estimating cost/profits of making hay.  Well, here is my local ag college's, detailed Excel spreadsheet, called "crop-budget-estimator-tool-for-forages-detailed"

Now I haven't used it but thought that I would throw it out there, for everyone to use this winter while dreaming about 'next' year. I don't know how it works or what the output looks like either.  I'm too busy myself right now to spend much time with it, but this winter...............................  could be another story.

Sugar content - hay customer

Well I got my first customer wanting to know the sugar content of my hay.  Not that she isn't willing to pay for the hay and the test (that's good in my thinking process ;)).  My knowledge is real limited, but ........................... maybe I can learn.

Here is a link to the lab & tests available that I use:

https://agriking.com/lab-services/analab-policies/

I'm not certain (educated yet) on what test(s) she would need in order to answer her question, about the amount of sugar in my hay.  She also ask about starch, but that's already in the test results that I get IDB (I get the complete forage test on my hay, FYI).

So HT guys/gals help educate this old guy on sugars and possibly what test should I get for her.  I don't want to call her out, but just be able to talk the language a little will be helpful.  Maybe I have a better premium product I can produce (naturally selling for more $$, if i got to take extra steps to produce).  :)

My thought process so far, is the plant (alfalfa or grasses), produce sugar throughout the day.  The peak sugar content is just before/at sundown.  The plant uses this sugars to 'grow', the growing happens all day (with the right conditions, naturally).  So the plant sugar content is the lowest at sun rise (or shortly thereafter).  If this is true, the earlier in the day cutting would help generate lower sugar hay.

Let me have it, won't be the first time I'm off-base either.  :o

Thanks in advance for your wisdom/knowledge/comments.  :)

NH 650 Lift Cyl Repair

I'm replacing seals in my NH 650 tailgate lift cylinder. I am having absolute fits trying to get the double lip seal (part 86513307) into the inside groove in the cylinder head (part 785811). I have tried soaking seal in hot water to limber it up but that didn't help. Any suggestions on how to get this seal in?

Lambsquarter Mixed Grass Hay????

jeudi 27 août 2020

I’ve got some small fields that are not really intended for hay, but have an abundance of thick undergrowth of grass, but also massive amounts of lambsquarter. We called it stick weed around here when I was a boy.

Anyone bale up this type of lambsquarter mix grass for cow, goat and/or sheep hay?

We have a lot of inquiries for “goat” square bales of hay and I think I can get quite a few bales given the August rains we’ve had. Even if it’s a few bucks a bale, I’ve cleaned off the field and maybe gleaned a little more revenue for the farm.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Case 8440 Decal size

First post here but have been watching and reading.

Bought a Case 8440 baler last weekend, only paid $1200 and took it right to the field. No complaints other than the bale size decal is worn down. Does anyone have a picture of the size decal so i can get something made or at least marker numbers back on?

New Holland BR7060 Bale Command Plus

Have a BR7060 with bale command Plus, on the monitor it won’t come off of the number of wraps we use for the most part once and a while I’m able to have it say 30 for the core size but then jumps right back to the number of netwrap. Looking for help on this issue. Tried cleaning all connectors with contact cleaner as well. Also when this was happening I had the wrap set at 3 and would only put about one wrap on it went into the book button and adjusted the settings and still hasn’t done anything to help the amount of net wrap being applied to the bale have to let it auto wrap then do a manual wrap on the bale. Thanks!

Massey Ferguson 2210

mercredi 26 août 2020

Hello,
This is my first tractor, its a massey ferguson 2210. It has a bucket on the front, and I am having a few issues.
- the bucket tilts and lowers just fine, but it will not pick up very much weight, probly 10 shovel fulls, and it is very slow to lift.
it is not low on fluid, but is there a hyd filter? and where is it located.
- the steering has no "stop" you can turn the steering wheel all the way around a couple times, and unless you turn it quickly the tires do not move.the rack and pinion type device in the front is leaking a bit.
-the diff lock light stays on, and even the button seems to do nothing.
- the 4wd selector switch is worn off, so what are the 3 potions?
- is there a hyd lock for transport? could that be an issue with my bucket not raising and having no power?

Thank you in advance for all of your help.
Dave

Aggravated at my dealer

When I ordered my new L3301 a few weeks back, one of the things I specified was I wanted Extendable Link Arms. They quoted my $200. I thought that seemed reasonable. The salesman then later mentioned that he thought it would be money better spent if he sold me a quick hitch. I then pointed out, I didn't want a quick hitch, I wanted the extendable link arms, otherwise I would have just bought another Pat's Easy Change as I really liked it.

So, I patiently waited for my extendable arms. Finally I called yesterday afternoon and he said that they were sitting on his desk. I go down last night to pick it up and I mention that the box is smaller than I expected and he said "Yeah, me too" but I didn't open it and look at it. Went I went to install it last night, it turns out it wasn't the extendable link arms, it was only the stabilizer bars that pin - typically found on the arms that are extendable.

I sent a nice text this morning explaining what I got and that I was still missing the arms. After a while he replies back, extendable arms aren't available for the Standard L and that he had looked several times. I feel like I was lied to in that I had explicitly said extendable link arms and was adamant about it.

This is on top of trying to get a plug so that I can wire in a rear work light and they are wanting $100 for a short piece of wire with a plug on the end.

Pretty aggravated with the dealer right now, feel like I was lied to. Never had a problem with my New Holland dealer, treated my like gold for 17 years, I'm just not a fan of the new LS made tractors.

Changes are in the wind.

mardi 25 août 2020

Changes are in the wind.
Many have seen the server busy try again later error message. I have bumped up the threshold so that it does not show up as much but when we get to that threshold the server will crash. I have made the decision to migrate to new software that will offer quite a few advantages. It works much better with mobile devices. It lets you add more than one pic at a time and it's what I'd call a cleaner design. It is faster since it runs the current supported version of PHP; so all the errors that are causing the server issues now should go away. Downside, it's different. Nobody likes change, including me. I have painted us into a corner trying to avoid change and now is the time I have to bust through the wall to another room. I have been working with this software this past week and now I find it similar to our current version of vBulletin.

Beware, it will look different. I cannot duplicate this style but I will work to make it palatable. It will take time. First we make the change to new software and the default design ...blue. Then I can focus on making it look better. All posts and pictures will come over. Downside, depending on how the image was added it might show up as a thumbnail you have to click to see the full size. A minor annoyance. Newly added pics the poster can choose full size or thumb. Overall most is very similar but it is different and we all know there will be a learning curve. I resist change, maybe more than most but we cannot survive running software that is 10 years past end of life and PHP version that is also 10 years old and vulnerable to hacks, viruses and data integrity issues. I would not make this change if it was not absolutely necessary. I have procrastinated on this as long as I can. This is an expensive ordeal but I refuse to ask for donations before you see the new software. Please stick with me. We will all get through this together. Never fret, myself and the mods will be here to answer questions and help with all issues.

Have summer rains extended weed spraying window?

We have had good rains all summer and pastures and hayfields that are often brown and dormant this time of year are green and growing.

So are the weeds, and aggressively. Several of the common  local weeds are recommended (by University)  to spray between May and July. Specifically cocklebur, pigweed, ragweed, wild carrot. Question: If they are green and growing will a spray be effective this late?

They are pretty mature, but growing,

discbine

we been making hay with NH477 haybine ever since i can remeber and we just bought a nh1409 biscbine.  we are looking forward to the upgrade but are a little overwhelmed with all the newer stuff on the discbine, have a manual order and should be here soon.  the guy we about it off of was or seem to be very knowledgable about discbine.  but he kept telling us about the CV pto shaft how the guy that got rid of it hated it and was always breaking them, 3 to be exact. wasn't sure if he was telling us to be nice or just to buy one of he's high priced ones with the 2pt hook up. the mower is and 07 and to take out 3 CV pto shafts is a little crazy in 13 years I think. I can see on the machine he made a lot of sharp turns and was mowing rock fields or something, but could there be something else wrong with the discbine if he was replace every 4 years or there about? looked at a lot of reviews on discbine and none of the said anything about trouble with the CV pto shaft. hope I didn't make a mistake.  the good thing is the cutter bar was taken apart and repaired and gear box was looked at as well to make sure all was good.  I feel I got for a good price but hope that it doesn't come back to bit me in the butt.

Working cattle with milking stanchions

Hey folks,

I'm growing a small herd of Angus, and currently don't have any means of working cattle. I've been looking for good deals on squeeze chutes, or head gates, but haven't had much luck, and don't have tons of cash to spend right now building a tub. Eventually I will definitely be doing that, but for now I feel kind of vulnerable not having some sort of way to treat, tag, preg check, AI, etc.

A friend of mine works for what use to be a dairy, now raises heifers for other dairyman. They have good used locking stanchions they're selling for cheap. I can get 20ft or so for a few hundred bucks, vs $1500 for a used chute, plus the panels etc to build a tub-like setup. Are there any cons to running just the stanchions, or would I be better off saving my money for now and chance not having anything to work cattle with if someone gets sick?

Thanks

Chris

NH575 clutch breaks weld

I've had 2 575's for like 14 years and added a 3rd one this summer. So both of my say 2006 575 balers have broke the center shaft out of the clutch holder bracket that bolts to flywheel. NH wants over $1000 for it. I tried to weld it but that failed. So I bought a new one. So far so good but both now have broke. I've had it repaired at my local welding shop by just getting it rewelded good and centered properly but that doesnt last. So I told my guy we have to do something different. So this time he built up the shaft and machined the plate so it actually has to be pressed in place then welded. Which is what we figure they do at the factory.

My old NH278's and NH320s never had this issue. Anyone else have this issue on the 575's. I looked at a new NH equivalent they make now and the slip clutch is updated and heavier duty. So I guess that solved the problem.

NH BR 780

The baler is sometimes making a screeching/knocking sound. It doesnt do it all the time but is worse when a bale is in. So have checked all the bearing they seem good
EXCEPT for the drive belt roller one on the clutch side. It looks fine and starts fine but a temp reading of running only 10 minutes says 150F on the bearing. The other side of the roller bearing says 86F. So my question is it very complicated to pull all that off to get to the bearing? Do you need certain tools for the spring and clutch? Or is it pretty standard annoyance of getting to the part? Thanks

Body Roll - Adjusting Shocks X1120D

Our RTV spends a lot of time on trails moving from orchard to orchard. Some of the trails are not level side to side which creates a good bit of body role.

The shocks are in the factory default adjustment position - #3 I think.

I read in the manual where adjusting them stiffer might reduce body roll, increase ride height and firm up the ride.

Has anyone tried this? Looks like you need a spanner wrench. Any idea what size?

Thanks

New Holland 615 disc mower

Hey all. Looking at my first disc mower. A NH 615. Looks to be in reasonable condition. Has been reconditioned a while back. Center Delivery Rotary Rakes

Hey folks, I am starting to work out the idea of getting a center delivery rotary rake and need some suggestions on what models to focus on. Currently using wheel rakes, and would like to upgrade due to the amount of dirt that always seems to end up in the windrow. Rollbar rakes are an option, but slow operation and the fact that it ropes the hay and seems to be hard on alfalfa pushes me towards rotary. It would be nice to demo a rotary to see if it lives up to my expectations, but I highly doubt there is a dealer in this area that has a two rotor center delivery models in stock.

Speed is important, hence why we have been using wheel rakes. I typically swath about 40-45 acres of alfalfa in a day, so the rake needs to be able to cover that much ground in about a 3 hour time window. Swather is a NH H7450 discbine which on paper has a 13' cutting width, realistically without using a tractor with GPS and auto steer to pull it the cut width probably ends up more like 12'. So I am thinking a rake with a 20-24' working width would be about ideal for putting two windrows into one.

Hay is also not tedded, that is why center deliver rather than side delivery interests me more as it will end up in the middle between the two cut swaths. It will also be used for grass hay, not just alfalfa, but that seems to be less sensitive to rake types. My understanding is that the two rotor rakes can also be used with only one rotor down in operation, which would be good for when we end up with a heavy first cutting in grass and don't want to rake two into one. What brands and models should I be looking at? It would be nice to find a used one, but not sure if that will be possible or not.

Parts availability is very important, I've had a lot of issues with sourcing parts from large European and even Canadian manufacturers. They make an excellent product and we buy based on the performance of the equipment, only to find out when I need a certain part there is nothing in stock anywhere in the USA and it is 3 weeks out coming from Italy or held up on the Canadian border at customs for a week.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, and feel free to tell me about other types of rakes might fit my uses better than a twin rotary would. Thank you

Rollbelt 450 Utility tailgate issues

I just recently purchased a 2011 rollbelt 450 utility. After About 10 bales working the bugs out with the net, I locked the tailgate out in order to clean some of the chaff off of the belts. After I unlocked the hydraulics lock I began having issues opening the tailgate after a full bale. Come to find out, the cylinder on the side of the hydraulic tailgate lock is not fully Retracting, causing the tailgate latch to not fully come down and latch which caused it to catch when attempting to open. The tailgate itself is fully closed and the other side ( with the sensor) seems to be working fine. I was able to work the lever back and forth To dump the bale, but I can’t seem to figure out what’s going on as there is no cylinder adjustments and the hydraulics simply bleed off with gravity when shutting. (There is only one hydraulic line to tractor. Has anyone ever run into an issue like this? I’m not sure to look into the hydraulic lock,Cylinder, or tractor hydraulics. Thanks

what's the best way to run a kuhn wheel rake in light alfalfa

is there any good technique to help a wheel rake make fluffier windrows in light alfalfa?   sr110 kuhn g2 running about 5mph.  this was raked around 9:30am with dew just off, damp leaves.   It did a good job moving all of the leaves and stems to the windrow.  I certainly appreciate the consistent windrow width when round baling, but i'd sure like a fluffier windrow to help the breeze dry the stems on the day of baling.  Do i need to start shopping for rotary rakes or is there anything to adjust that will make fluffier windrows with this wheel rake?  only have this one picture of the field when i finished.

NH 1409 discbine

just bought a NH 1409 discbine this week and the guy we bought it off of wa say the reason he was selling was because of the hook up to the tractor.  he went with the 2 point hitch hook up on the new one cause he was blowing out the velocity shaft on the discbine.  has anyone else have any issues with there velocity shaft on their discbine?  the way the guy was talking he drives like a mad man and makes sharp turns which you can tell the paint is wore off.  thinking maybe if we don't make sharp turns and be smart wont have problems any suggestions? nice thing is it was cheap and the cutter bar was replaced so hope to have no problems for a while

Case IH DCX131 vs. New Holland 1431

I'm wondering if anybody has any opinions or experience between these two mowers.  Both are 13 foot machines and are made roughly the same years I think.  The Case has steel rollers and most of the NHs have rubber chevron rollers.

Trailed vs mounted rotary rakes

I’m looking to upgrade from my old rollabar rake to a single basket rotary. Will have to be used to fit my budget.

I’m used to raking the head rows first. It’s always a challenge to turn the rollabar without catching the edge of the inner head row or messing up the end of the last pass. Mounted rake seems like it would be great for lifting up to solve that problem but I feel like they would be prone to digging in if the tractor hit a rut. I see Krone has a front support wheel that looks like it would minimize that.

Used mounted rakes are far less common than trailed ones. Does the trailed rake have the same problem catching the inner head row as my old rollabar or have they figured out proportions or some other way that it turns sharply enough to turn between the head row and the windrow I just raked? It seems that the length of draw bar on trailed rakes would minimize the digging in problem over ruts.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

Thanks

Craig

NH 644 bent tail gate??

I feel like I’ve read about this before but couldn’t locate it. I seem to have tweaked the gate on my baler, presumably from lowering it on a bale while I’m currently working without my ramp, and am looking for the best way to correct it. Both sides close flush (including when letting it drift down) but the gate is shifted just enough to the left at the bottom that the bottom roll in the gate is rubbing the baler frame.

I have confirmed that the gate pivot points are okay and have also tried lowering it onto a bale to counteract the original issue but so far that has not helped. Is there something I can be missing, either in what would cause this slight shift left or in good solutions for correcting it?

I don’t have any hay laying, so at least there’s that.

Round baler missing/not picking up hay

It has been dry here in SW MI and the second and third cutting has been short and dense. My NH 640 round baler seems to be missing more hay than usual. The hay is drying very well and is very light and fluffy. I am missing it from the sides (outside the pick-up head) as I am having a hard time getting the outside edges of the bale to pack well, without loosing more hay from the pick-up. I have tried to get some hay-saver wheels, but Marwin Ind. is either out of business or just doesn't like me, because they do not answer their phone and will not return my e-mails. I've tried to get some from the NH dealer, but they claim that they do not work and at the price, they must be made of gold. I had them on my old Vermeer baler and they worked great. I can't be the only one with this problem. Does anyone else have a good solution? Thanks, Kurt

BR780A Net wrap dosn't start.

Lately, my BR780A trips on bale full, inserts the duckbill, but the wrap frequently won't start.  This is now happening about 75% of the time.

A couple of things have changed.  1) My hay is dryer than ever before--down in the 14% area where I'm usually at the 18% range.  2) I'm using a different brand of net wrap.

Other than that, I don't see anything obvious about why it won't catch.  I keep the actuator area clean.  Everything is well lubed. Baler has 5200 bales on it.  I haven't made any adjustments other than sharpening the knives about 200 bales ago. (I followed mike10's procedure for sharpening them--great suggestions.)

To get it to wrap, I clear the error, hit wrap--sometimes it will take 2-3-4 cycles on this.  I have found that if I can "bump" the baler forward or backwards right after it inserts the duck bill, it will often catch and start.

It's almost as if the duckbill isn't being inserted quite far enough to get the wrap against the bale.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ralph

Farmhand Feedmaster 861 - Info or Manual

jeudi 20 août 2020

Hi! We just acquired a Farmhand Feedmaster 861. We have searched online and contacted Agco to try and find an operators manual for it. We have found manuals for similar machines, but not this one. Wondering if anyone out there has a manual for it or can share information on operating it. This unit is fully hydraulic and has the square bale attachment.

5075E Cab Starting issues

Aside from my 5320 issues, I also have a 5075E cab that would sometimes act like the battery was weak when I would crank it.  Now sometimes when I crank it it's started making a fast clicking noise and then a grinding sound like when you grind a gear. It only does it some of the time.  I will turn the key off and re-crank and it does fine.  Any thoughts on why it's doing this.  The battery was bought in 2018 or 2019, so it's not old.  And the tractor doesn't act up every time you crank it, only some of the time.  I'm not wanting to have to take it to the dealer either if I can fix it myself.  All thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated.  Not a good time of the year to have a tractor out of service when you have hay to cut and bale.

JD 5320 starting issues

My JD 5320 would sometimes crank up and then die out.  I would then pump the fuel filter and it would crank and run no problems.  The other day it did the same thing, only I couldn't get it to crank after pumping the filter.  I had some air in there, so I bled the air out and still wouldn't crank.  It would turn over good but never crank.  So I then decided to check my fuses under the steering wheel to make sure I didn't have one blowed, and after I reinstalled all the fuses, I proceeded to crank the tractor only to have no sound no lights whatsoever.  Completely dead.  Any thoughts on what it might be so I don't have to load it up and take it to a dealer.

New Holland 5060 Knotter help please

Left hand knotter missed 1 out of 10 bales today.
I greased the knotter, tried changing twine balls, adjusted spring tension, played with bale tension but nothing seemed to help.
The baler has been good to us since new, 6 years ago/30,000 bales.
Please look at pictures and help me figure out why I am not getting a complete knot. Looks like the twine is literally tearing. What needs to be adjusted further?

Efficiency picking up bales in the field?

Looking for some thoughts or ideas. We bale all small squares with a hoelscher accumulator. I set the baler up for dad and let him knock them out while I pick them up using out skid steer and grapple. I generally have a buddy that works for us part time drop in on bale nights to move the wagon along in the field so I don’t need to carry bales from one end to the other with skid steer or constantly get out to move the wagon closer.

I saw a video not to long ago where a guy used a loader tractor to load bales and had a ball on this 3-pt hitch to move the trailer along. That seems more efficient to me. Never out of the cab and constantly moving down the line.

I’m curious if anyone has improvised with a skid steer setup? Always trying find a way to go faster or the same speed with less people!

Thanks

Small square bale plunger

I'm working on a New Holland 276 Hayliner, and I'm replacing all the bearings on the plunger.  The major issue is that the linkage and shaft broke the set screw collar welded to the side of the plunger.  It must have hit something hard, or made too many heavy bales.  Take a look at my photo.  The plate is dimpled from the bearings as if there was a vertical force.  Should I cut out and weld in a new piece of plate, or try to bend the plate back to vertical?

Trying to help a neighbor

He bought a used Kuhn disc mower and has cut several times with it but did loose all but 2 belts last time anyway got new belts and said cuts fine now but got to looking at his pulleys and noticed that they were kind of miss aligned and not straight.  He says that the breakaway joint has been replaced with a strait welded piece that could be the problem so I went over to look and don't have a clue how this happened or how to correct it, but I did take a picture.

Comparing Old to New

Thought I would share a few things comparing my old New Holland TC24D to my new Kubota L3301 now that I have 11 hours on the Kubota vs. over 2500 on the New Holland.

First is size. The Kubota is substantially larger than the New Holland - that was known and planned, but just the getting used to it, especially in the barn. I was so used to the New Holland, I could do about anything on it and could put it anywhere without "looking" because I just knew the tractor so well - that isn't a knock on the Kubota, but hopefully that will come with time again.

Comparison - the New Holland engine actually vibrated less than the Kubota, but the Kubota engine is quieter. I had heard people complain about hydrostat whine but I never understood why. I didn't think it was that bad. Now I know why. The hydrostat on the NH is much, much quieter than the Kubota.

Things I like better about the Kubota: The instrument panel on the Kubota better, better illumination and easier to read at night. I'm enjoying have a 3 range hydrostat, I do most chores in medium, it has enough power to do most things, but still gives me a little quicker travel speed. Really liking my the SSQA loader. I switch between the bucket and hay spear quite a bit and like the fact the new tractor can pick the round bales up with the loader and it doesn't care. Makes it easier getting them into the hay feeders. I like the R14 tires and the heavier weight, I find for the most part, it doesn't spin when going into a pile like the NH did. I like the fact the head lights have a low and high beam.

Things I liked better about the New Holland: The quietness of the Hydrostat :) Other than the throttle, I think the controls on the New Holland were laid out much better. The 4wd selector lever was a nice big lever that easily slid into and out of 4wd. The PTO lever was a nice big lever that could easily be engaged with gloves on. The lever is small on the Kubota and I'm not sure if I have big work gloves on if I can engage it or not. Even though I said I liked the low and high beam headlights on the Kubota, I think the NH still had better overall headlights - brighter bulbs and actually used 4 bulbs to help light off to the side. I liked the radiator screen design a bit better. It pulled straight up. The Kubota slides out to the side. You have to raise the loader up to get it out. Still like the hydrostat pedal design a bit better on the New Holland, even though I think with heavy winter boots on, I will actually like the Kubota design a bit better.

Two complaints I have with the Kubota, it is still very hard to get into and out of 4wd. The New Holland was very easy, hoping it will loosen up a bit over time. Second is the loader bucket. Even though it is 12" wider (66" vs. 54") I don't feel like I'm able to get much more material in the bucket as it isn't near as deep. I also feel the New Holland bucket was a much heavier built bucket. I may eventually look around for a New Holland SSQA bucket and see if I can "afford" it.

New Kubota Owner - L3301

Been meaning to post this for awhile. I picked my new Kubota L3301 up on July 29th. I was torn between that and the LX3310. Even though the spec'd pretty close, the L is a substantially larger tractor with a much beefier loader and outweighed the LX by about 900 pounds, I was a bit worried about fitting in the barn. They were priced within spitting distance of each other. Ultimately my wife said to get the larger tractor.

So here is it. It has the LA525 loader with the SSQA 66" bucket. As you can see I also purchased a hay spear for the loader. This will allow me to now move 2 round bales at once. I got 1 rear remote - hopefully for a hydraulic top link soon. I sold my Pat's Easy Change with the old New Holland (I couldn't get it off, it was frozen on for some reason) so I ordered the extendable lift arms for it - though they still haven't come in yet. The dealer had some work to do as I wanted the new R14 tires - they cost me $200 over the already upcharged R4s. By default the dealer loads the rear with Rimguard.

I also sold my old 4' KingKutter brushcutter and got a new LandPride 5' cutter.

Then I get it home and I realize Kubota doesn't put a handle on the right fender, so I promptly had them order me a handle. It came in last week, $62 for a piece of plastic.

The first night I had it, I wanted to play with the cutter, first thing I promptly do was to hit a hidden log and flip it up and wedge it between the tire and fender and managed to dent and bend the fender. Had the NH 17 years and not a single dent, had this one less than an hour.

Some firsts for me... Teff and high stubble shoes

I decided to try planting some Teff after wheat this year.  I lightly worked the ground after the wheat came off and seeded 9lb/ac of Moxie Teff with a Brillion seeder on July 11th.  Was blessed with 2" of rain the following day and seem to get a good catch on the stand.  Most of the stand was 15-30" tall on Monday and some recent rain was putting small patches down.  I had a weather window and decided to take it.  This stuff is pretty fine, so I'm very curious to see how it will yield.  I fitted the 1411 with high stubble shoes and used them for the first time to try to achieve the desired 4" stubble height.  Didn't get as clean of a cut as I would have liked with the grass being so fine, especially in the places where it was shorter, or partially down.  These pics  are 37 days after seeding.

H6740 Mower Questions

I picked up a used 6740 disc mower yesterday. I'm new to disc mowers, but bar seems tight, spins good. I am missing the swath disc and the "top hat" on the end module. What purpose does it serve, do I need it? It has a couple issues with the canopy, and some cosmetic issues, but mechanically seems good. I'll be changing all the fluids and blades while I read up on what I need to know. Thanks.

BR7090 not tying

I purchased a 2013 BR7090 twine only, 6100 bales on it, it will wrap a bale when I push the wrap button but won’t automatically start tying when bale is full and alarm sounds. It has sat outside since last fall. I had to adjust bale size sensor but that works fine now. The Bale Command is set to auto. I talked to original owner who traded it in, he said he baled 1500 bales in 2019 never missed one. Is there a sensor that tells it to tie?

RTV900 engine swap from a grasshopper with a D902

Ok, Im new to forum and this is my first post. Recently purchased a 2009 RTV900 that was smoking bad. After further inspection found a hole in the block. I found out that it is very difficult to locate a good D902 engine at a reasonable price!! But I did find a low hour 2012 Grasshopper model 325D mower that has a D902 engine in it.

Here is the information on my RTV900 valve cover tag:
Model= D902-ET03
Engine Displacement = .898L
Family = 9KBXL, 898KCB
ECS = EM
Power = 16.1kw / 3200 rpm

Here is the information on the grasshopper valve cover tag:
Model= D902-ET01
Engine Displacement = .898L
Family = BKBXL, 898KCB
ECS = EM
Power = 18.5kw / 3600 rpm

Notice the difference in the model number extension, the first family group number, and of course the higher power and rpm output.

So the question is of course, will this swap work? Will it be pretty much plug and play? Obviously the electrical connections, and accessories may need to be swapped, but will everything bolt up correctly? The extra power and rpms should be a nice benefit, But will this cause HST issues?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Looking at some "new" round balers.

My dad and I had an easy time getting first cutting put in this year thanks to some nice dry weather for a change.  We were able to get on the fields when we should have and put up some very nice grass hay.  The problem we've run into is that the round bales we put up with our Claas 62S round baler (fixed chamber) don't keep a nice shape since we can't get a lot of density in the center when the bales starts.

I've been keeping an eye out for some decent variable chamber balers and have found a couple that are close to my price range, but have the rotary cutter in them, which I don't need.  I know most of these cutters can be disabled by having the knives removed or backed out, but how well do they work that way?  Is there a big HP penalty having the cutter and not using it?  The one baler I'm looking at is a Claas 280.  Any opinions?  I've been quite happy with the Claas 62S that we have now, other than the lack of a variable chamber.

So have a property we still rent the lighter ground but the tile has all failed on the muck, landowner is getting paid some obscene amount to revert it back to a wetland.

Needed mowed so they could get stakes placed so the contractor can start digging two ponds/retention basins.

Ragweed was easily 4-6 feet taller than the tractor and full of pollen, made two rounds and had the wife bring me the leaf blower.

Took a little better than three hours to  mow two 200x400 areas. Cat tails are especially tough to mow i’ve found out, another weed as well would kill the tractor dead if you weren’t ready to either lift the bushing or jam the clutch in. Every 2-3 rounds stop and blow the radiator out.

Oliver 1600 diesel and three point 8 foot Brush Hog. Thought about taking the 18 footer and a big tractor but we used to farm the muck as well and i know in more than one spot a neighbor about rolled a tractor on its side from dropping a rear wheel in a spring.

Custom rate in Indiana is roughly $20/acre, for everything being in bloom it was some especially nasty mowing, at least its been dry enough didn’t have any skeeters or deer flies to deal with.  Land owner said right off the get go this needs done and we ain't gonna quibble over what it costs.

$75 don’t seem near enough for what a miserable SOB it was, however don’t want to be an ass as its Dads landlord.

What say the members for a fair price?

Looking for disc mower advice

Hi all,

I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to hay and would really appreciate your opinion and/or advice.

I currently cut about 60 acres a year (sometimes more if someone requires a hand) so a lot less than a lot of people on here. To get the job done I use an MX5800 with an older NH463 disc mower. So far it's been working fine but you can definitely tell that it's giving the MX one heck of work out. The biggest "trouble spot" seems to be on some of the pretty steep parts of the field (even when going sideways as you can tell the mower is trying to pull the tractor). Something else that has me a bit worried is that no matter how I set up the mower and 3pt, I'm not able to raise the mower and bar high enough to keep it from dragging if I'm in a pinch and need to turn around or backup. I try my best to avoid having to do so but sometimes I just don't have a choice.

With that being said, I talked to my dealer with whom I have a really great relationship. What he suggested after I told him I was willing to look into a newer mower is the HM234.

I understand that going to the HM234 will obviously take more time to cut the field but I'm willing to take the trade off if this means that it will be much better suited for my tractor.

Price wise he is willing to give me a very good deal, both on my old NH463 and the new HM234 but I would really like to hear your input.

I really appreciate your advice.

Thanks

David

how to haul haybines on a trailer

I am looking to purchase an older new holland haybine (either 492 or 489 or similar) and am wondering how hard they would be to get on a deckover trailer sideways and then remove the tongue for transport (anything I find is 150-300 miles away).  I have also found a couple new holland 499 haybines down in the $3-4k range and may try to do the same.  I have a deckover trailer with ramps that I can set on the side, but how hard would it be to back up the ramps and once on the trailer can I set it down enough to try and strap over it a couple times (as most of the shields are just sheet metal).  Given most of the 489 and 492's are in the $1500-3000 range and the 499 in the $3-5k range is the 499 that much better?  I cut 30-50 acres once or twice a year and currently use a 9' sickle mower, and everything gets small squared.

Small Square Van Trailer Customer Drop & Storage

We are in the process of moving from kicker to accumulator (18 on edge) for small squares of mostly straw and some hay.  We have one straw customer who brings their own van trailers and another who is interested in potentially having us providing one on their site for them to unload from as they need it.  In researching here and other forum sites the loading of van trailers seems to be well covered (interesting most articles date back to five years ago or so).  What doesn't seem to be covered well is the business side of owning your trailer(s) for local delivery and customer usage.  It seems to be well accepted for local deliveries flatbed trailers are much more convenient than van trailers for loading and unloading.  Others have commented that for long distance van trailers provide the best method of delivery by being protected from the weather.

As with any sales having good customers who are easy to work with make arrangements like these more palatable than those who are a challenge at every step.  For those who have tried owning your trailers and dropping them at customer sites:

- Do you find that providing this type of service increased your customer base?

- Were you able to move customers from frequently buying a pickup or small trailer load (100 or less bales) to a van trailer (500+ bales) on a longer schedule that saves you time?

- Do you limit the time a customer can keep the trailer and/or charge a monthly fee after a certain period?

- Has one type or configuration of trailer been better than another (ex. dry van vs reefer, 53 ft or shorter, etc.)?

- Do you have issues with the trailers sitting to too long (ex. brakes locking)?

- Can hay be safely stored for 3 to 6 months in mid-western climate after it has cured in the barn?

- What problems have you experienced?

- Are there other alternatives have you found that worked better?

Answers to these questions and any advice is greatly appreciated!

Put new belts on my 554XL baler, belts seem to be to loose.  The two 6 inch belts are not tracking correctly, any suggestions of what could be the problem. The 14 inch seem to be better, however they are perfect. Adjusted the soft start springs, didn't help.  Could the looseness in the belt be the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone tried it? I am a fan of the SCH products and they're running a 10% rebate promotion right now. That being said I'm actually pretty happy with the cut quality of the NH bar. Wondering if the SCH bar might be easier on the bearings and gearboxes with its roller bearings.

Any point in fertilizing if it's not going to rain?

This would be granular urea. It's been a dry summer, I wasn't able to get all of it down before the big .07" we got the other day. Couple more pastures to go. As of right now it's not forecasted to rain for 6 days. Temps 80 during the day 50 at night so we have a decent dew going. Is it okay to put it down now or should I wait until closer to when it's supposed to rain.

JD 566 baler plugging in dry hay???

Have a JD 566 round baler. Seems to not handle heavy swaths without plugging. Currently trying to bale 2-13ft swaths raked together. Yielding about 3-4 bales an acre. Some bales it bales just fine. Others it will plug at 60" or 40" with no reason. Slip clutch seems to be good. When unplugging it noticed the starter roller likes to wrap with hay. Wraps around it and between the belts that run by it until it plugs. Have to kick the bale out and cut the hay off it before the baler will spin again. Any ideas? Pickup teeth are all good and chains are set proper. Watching a 568 take the same swath without issues at 7mph and might hit 3mph with this 566.

2) Is there a bare bones minimum and/or maximum number of wraps x bale?

3) Are there better or worse brands of net wrap?  In my area Fleet Farm carries it and I see I can get it through Amazon or the local machinery dealerships.

4) On ave how many 4'x5' bales will I be able to wrap from one roll of net wrap?  How about a 4'x4' bale, how may bales per roll?

5)  For custom baling how much more should I charge x bale for net wrap as opposed to twine tie?

Has anyone who has a Vermeer 5420 rebel net wrap baler had really good luck or bad luck with the baler??  Thanks guys for the feedback.

More Density, a John Deere 568 or a New Holland RB560/ CaseIH RB565?

samedi 15 août 2020

Any opinion is a good opinion,

I have a John Deere 568 and it has been a good baler but I am getting close to 25,000 bales on it and am needing to upgrade while there is still a little value left..... I do about 3000 bales of hay and 1500 bales of straw each year on one baler.... I heard from a neighbor that said they went and traded there 568 and 569 John Deere balers for a New Holland RB560 (which is identical to a CaseIH RB565) and they were blown away on how much more hay that they can put into a bale. When they said that I think I started to drool because a lot of our bales are sold and the heavier smaller bales the better for when it comes to freight...... So I was just wondering if that is true:

-Does a RB560 & RB565 have more density in the bales compared to John Deere 568.

-Could I get over 1000 pound Wheat Straw/ Barley Straw bale out of a RB560 & RB565 baling right behind combine (with my 568 I would be very lucky to get a 1000 pound straw bale with my density to the max high and bale at 71")

-Does a RB560 & RB565 bale rotary straw pretty easy, as easy as a John Deere 568

NH BC50 series and Case SBX

vendredi 14 août 2020

Can anyone confirm that the pickup bands for the Case SBX series balers are the same as the NH BC50 series balers?

I'm looking to install poly pickup bands into my BC5060 but over here in Australia our NH balers are yellow with black pickup so wondering if I should order the Case SBX bands which are also black instead of yellow.

336 John Deere restrictor wedges/ plates.

I'm working on a 1976 John Deere 336 square baler without the adjustable doors on the sides of the chute. We were told to add compression wedges to help make better bales. the issue is that we found two parts;angle restrictor wedge  and plunger extention , both having the same part number and look identical. just wonder if anyone has had any dealings with this. Im having trouble finding a diagram showing the placement of a  wedge but if it goes where it looks like it should, the bolt holes dont line up. should replacing the hay restrictor plates(cheese grater) actually be what needs to be looked into?

Case 8830 Windrower Hydraulic Issues

Bought this windrower this summer in hopes of being able to cut my hay with it. after getting it and trying it, i realized i had hydraulic issues. One wheel has very little power once the hydraulic oil warms up. after conferring with the dealer, we agreed that the wheel motor needed to be rebuilt. I sent it off and it was completely rebuilt. $1000 later and i had the motor back on in hopes of having my issues fixed. that was not the case. it was not any different than before. does anyone have any suggestions of where to go from here? it runs great and the header is in good shape so i definitely want to fix it but do not want to just keep throwing money at it hoping to magically find the problem. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

NH 488 cutter bar height

Although I've been using a Haybine for many years,I still have some things to learn.

I pull a 9' Model 488 with a Ford 5000 which has 38" rears.Drawbar height is at spec.

I'm trying to raise my stubble height without success.I was running with  the skids in the middle slot but moved them down to the forth and now all the way to the fifth and final notch to try and raise the cutter bar height without success.Actually,it might be worse.I also made sure the pin stop was where New Holland said it should be to flatten the cutterbar tilt angle.

It appears when I lower the cutter bar the skids stop it high enough but then the bar will still tilt farther forward and put a steeper downward angle on the knife.

Would switching to a single  spool setup on the cylinder help stop the forward tilt and allow some kind of float for the cutter bar or should I attempt some kind of extension to the stop weld assembly.

Ireally would like to leave about a 4" or more stubble height to help the health of the grass and help keep down the weeds.

NH 565 Tucker Finger problems

All,

I am having a bunch of problems with my dad’s NH 565 in regards to the tucker fingers. This problem I am having is not on every bale that is made, but it seems to be happening off and on throughout the process. I will tell you that I am not super educated in this whole process, I am just trying to help my dad with his baler, so I will do my best in trying to explain the problem.

The bale making and knotter process seems to be going ok. The knots are made without any problems. What the problem is; after the knot is made and the needle goes back down and the tucker finger comes back to the resting position the twine seems to be “hanging up” on the tucker finger, instead of slipping off to the side of it.

The problem is the twine will get mostly caught up on or near the rounded head of the bolt of the tucker finger. The bale will then push forward, twine will then break. This problem does not happen every time a bale is made, but about every 5th or 6th bale made. If I have the driver speed up the baler, it seems to work better. But if the baler is slowed down, this twine getting caught on top of the tucker finger is now on every bale made.

I also noticed that the middle hay dog spring is broken on top. I’m not sure if the broken spring is the “direct” cause of the twine getting caught on top of the tucker finger? I sure could use some help in getting this problem fixed. It was a very long hot day in the hay field up here in Michigan yesterday with this problem going on. I really appreciate everybody’s time and consideration with my problem.

Case RBX561 Bale starting problems

does anyone ever have problems with the baler taking the hay from the pickup and feeding it all the way to the front top part of the baler? when it does it i have to get out and pull all that hay out before i can wrap it. seems to me its worse in dryer hay than in wet hay. also has anyone ever welded bigger round bar to the roller directly behind the pickup and would that help getting bales started? any help would be greatly appreciated.

5-70% moisture tester

This was in my email from NH, first I've seen a baler mounted moisture meter that reads from 5-70%.  I know that Harvest Tec has one for RB and Large Square balers, that reads to 60%.  Attached is a copy/paste of their ad.  I'm intrigued, for the RB application, being I have the capability to make large marshmallows (what my grandson calls plastic wrapped RB).

IH 430 chain tightening

I’m new to farming started this year. I picked up a baler and swather for dirt cheap. The baler works good and I’ve already done 200 bales this first cutting anyway I just noticed that the chains both top and bottom are loose the bottom isn’t too bad but the top is worse I oil them and it runs fine. I have probably 400 more bales to go for this season but was wondering how to tighten these chains up? Will it mess up my timing? What should I do? Should I wait till I’m done for the season? Thanks in advance

Grasshopper invasion concerns

jeudi 13 août 2020

Seems like the grasshoppers have gotten out of control this year a problem I have never had before. I had some Seven XLR left over from Timothy mite control and it smoked them. The grasshopper’s literally ate a field completely off only leaving stems before I figured out what was happening. My question is I will be planting new fields in about two weeks my concern is will they chew the new growth fast as it comes up. I heard a local guy has sprayed three times and they make a comeback in a week or two. Any input would be great on chemical’s or strategic planning for dealing with them.

New member - Got my RTV today!

Hi guys!

New member here. Got my RTV X1100C today, with a snowblower and a hitch. The dealer did an awesome job for custom brackets to fit the hitch in the front with the PTO K-Connect.

Can't wait to try the machine for some real work!

Cheers!

RTV 500 Cooling Fan Running Constantly

mercredi 12 août 2020

New to me RTV 500.

The little cooling fan under the seat runs constantly. Pretty annoying. I tried switching relays to no avail.

Any problem with just pulling the fuse? The radiator fan will still work...temp gauge only ever gets a needle width off the bottom anyway.

Let's talk CV joints

When I bought my round baler (new) about 5 years ago, I've kept it meticulously greased.  Everything seems to be doing well.  I was thinking (when the time came) about the PTO shaft where it hooks onto the tractor.  It has (what seems to be standard) the CV joint sandwiched between 2 U-joints.

My question is, FOR THE PRICE (around $900 new for that front part of the shaft), what was wrong with the way they used to be, just the U-joint set up?

Are they truly and actually decreasing driveline wear compared to the less expensive old style u-joint set up when comparing the price differential?

I'm only talking balers and perhaps rakes here, not your pickup trucks.

Thanks for any input!

QuinStar Update

Just sprayed some post second cutting today with a pt and a half quin-4 and a quart 24d.  I sprayed the same area last year after first cutting and spot sprayed Sledgehammer for nut sedge.  While I had plenty of crabgrass this year, I found 3 or 4 foxtail seedheads and no sedge in 6 ac cut baled then treated.  I plan to proactively spray quin next year right after first cutting.  I think it definitely substantially reduced the foxtail and the sledgehammer got the nutsedge.  The combo is as good or better than grazon on horse nettle.  not a plant in the field last fall and only a few at second cutting.  Won't be any next week.

Rake Upgrade

We are currently raking with a tonutti V12, putting 2 9' passes together behind a JD 1360 disc mower. This works great for the small square baler (would only need a V10), but the swaths tend to be light for the round baler.

We've been thinking about extending the V12 up to a V14 as it can almost reach 3 swaths as is. There is some concern about leaving that middle swath untouched but I suspect that the volume of dry hay in a 27' windrow would be enough to make the little bit underneath irrelevant.

However, this year and last have been very wet in our area and the wheel rake can struggle to move a swath that's been rained on. This has mmus thinking we may need to consider something like a Vermeer R2300 or R2800 foemr the power to always move the swath, or a tandem side delivery rotary rake. With the rotary I imagine we could put 2 together for the square baler and 4 for the round baler?

What else should we need thinking about and what am I missing?

High moisture in Second cutting og

I know someone just posted this somewhere, I think it was Larry, but I could not locate the thread.  Baling 2 day hay with temps in 90s slight breeze but enough.  Some crabgrass.  Moisture on the BHT-2 was all over the place, hand held 14-14.5 consistently.  Right where the moisture on the in line was going up I tested the bale in the chamber and felt the windrow at the pickup and it was fine.  Dust coming up from the knotters.  It was cut with impeller conditioning.  had this happen once before, I think last august with second cutting and roll conditioning.  Felt the bales on the wagon a day later and some had a slight damp feel but no heat.  What gives?  Both meters work fine in first cutting.

Square hay hauling rates?

mardi 11 août 2020

Last week we squared about 500 bales and about killed myself hauling it. Just trying to find out what the going rate is for somebody loading out of the field on a trailer and then stacking it in my barn. Didn't know if they get so much watch bales or by the hour or however. Let me know what y'all come up with thanks!

2004 RTV900 4 wheel drive question

I a bit out of my pay grade with these machines so let me ask for the experts advice.

I was grading dirt in 4 wheel dive and a couple of times I notice when pushing hard the back wheels would spin but no movement in the front.

Initially pulled the 4 wheel linkage of the trans to check adjustment and it was fine. Lever move in both directions and the linkage was correct at the end of travel in both 2 and 4 wheel drive.

Raised the unit on jack stands with all four wheels off the ground and started it in 4 wheel drive. The driveshaft turned as did all four wheels so everything appears to be connected. I could stop a front wheel with my foot but that could be just a function of the open driveshaft.

Check the front axle fluid and it's at the correct level and clear with good color.

Any thoughts on where I am or further testing I might do.

Thanks in advance.

Bermuda grass hay!

I hate trying to grow this grass for hay, I just had to turn my cows in on what was going to be a very nice 2nd cut but the field was being taken over by stem maggots, I was staying on top of it with what I could but It wouldn't have made it.  I can't tell you how mad I am because of the cost I put into this field with fertilizer and spray for weeds and insecticides.  Now, I have some fat and happy cows, but there goes some good winter feed down the drain.  What do y'all do about this recent new pest, the decimated my Alicia, now my Coastal.

Thanks,

Bo

Vermeer 504SI Twine Tying Questions

I finished baling 116 bales yesterday/today with my 504SI. It went pretty well until the last 20 or so bales. I struggled through and got finished but man was it annoying. It would not cut the strings. The problem was/is that the twine arm was not hitting the plunger that brings the blades down to make the cut. I will try to explain what I am seeing in a way that makes sense. I am going to reference things as if you are facing the front of the baler standing at the tongue.

This is a twin tie baler and the twine arm that pivots from the left side has a square pad that pushed the cutter plunger. The arm is going over the plunger. However, (and this has been going on for a while) when the arms are extended into the pickup the left arm is in the path of the pickup teeth pretty hard initially. So the arm is too low when extended and too high when retracted. The right arm is hit by the pickup teeth but not very bad, part of this I think is because the right arm swings Above the left arm.

I had the bad idea of heating the twine tube and adjusting it but this only made it worse about not hitting the plunger so I moved it back. Is there some adjustment that can be made to affect the pivot differently on each end? It looks to me as if the twine arms and cutter system is all on the same frame.

Another lesser issue is with programming the tie cycle. The baler has the equal fill/auto tie monitor. I can go into the 'learn' mode and teach the monitor a tie sequence but it will loose the sequence when batter power is removed from the monitor. It there a way to 'save' the tie sequence?

2665 haybuster

I'm looking for reviews of this bale processor. I currently have a jiffy 920 that has been good, just looking for a right hand discharge machine and my local dealer sells haybuster. I process silage bales for feeding and blow bedding in sheds and on the ground. The jiffy does struggle at times to get bedding to the back of the sheds so I'm hoping with the 1300rpm rotor on the haybuster that will improve. Any comments please?

To over seed, tear up or do nothing?

lundi 10 août 2020

I didn’t want to hi jack maxpowers thread so my issue is this,

We’ve have had a really dry year here too. I’ve got a new seeds field that was planted 50/50 alfalfa, Timothy at 30 pounds to the acre. It was seeded with a cover crop of oats at 60 pounds to the acre.
The field was worked , I had two days rock picking with a rented picker( it’s light land but has boney areas) seeded oats then packed it with a crowfoot packer . Then used a brillion to seed. The field is smooth as a babies bottom. All I had to do is wait for the rain . It never came, or very little. I got 54 ,52 inch bales (@ 600 pounds) which I sold to a dairy farmer.
Ok , so I wait still no rain. Nothing to harvest in second cut. The field is brown . No life , until this past week we’ve gotten almost 3 inches of rain.
I have crop insurance on it. I put in a claim just to start the paperwork just in case.
One adjuster has looked at it and said it’s bad but he has worse this year.
The re-seed benefit is @ 135 per acre. Doesn’t cover all the crop and work put in but it’s better then a kick in the butt.
I could wait till the spring but I really need the hay for first cut
So, this is my question?
What drills are you guys using for seeding in these established hay stands .
I just have this fall to put in alfalfa, because second year I would encounter auto toxicity right with the alfalfa?
What ever is there for plants I would run the risk of damaging then by cutting their crowns with the seed coulters right?
I’ve never done much late summer seeding. We did 45 ares last year for the first time and all the stars lined up right. The stand didn’t look good at first in the fall but this spring it was fantastic. Yield was a 106 small squares to the acre.
So not sure what do do

JD 466 Baler and Monitor Issue

Evening Everyone,

I have a JD 466 with the bale trak monitor. It's a twine tie only and was baling off the last bale of the field when the twine arms stopped mid extension. I thought maybe the arms were hitting a wad of hay stuck by the rolls (happened before, long time ago). Anyway, the monitor made a weird ding/buzz tone and turned itself off. I went to turn the monitor back on and it would not turn on.

I tried using the manual override (rocker switch) and switched the plug to run it to finish tying the bale and that did not work either. Ended up dumping the bale.

I came back to the farm shop and checked all the power with the multimeter and had 12v at all my connection points and the fuse was good in the monitor. I am direct wired to the battery on the tractor and I do have 12v going to the monitor and to the manual override rocker switch.

Any thoughts why nothing is working?

Thanks!

Hoof rot

My flock of sheep got a bad case of hoof rot. It rained almost a week solid with 12 hr rounds of 90+ heat. The pasture was saturated almost swampy....but with thigh high grass. Once it started to dry out they came back towards the barn where the pasture was shorter and dry. A couple of the kids were gimping around as if a cow stepped on them or they got rammed by a bossy ewe. As the days went on more and more were gimping around the pasture. I knew I had a problem when the momma ewes started limping too. Checked around and also called the local livestock vet. He recommended NuFlur but I got a cheaper generic called liquimyacin. or LA-200.

Got them all corralled up and inoculated. The directions say to give 2 shots in 48 hrs but they are all up and grazing and walking without a limp. I'm hoping to not have to catch all those basterds again.

I did miss one little guy. Funny how they can barely limp and crawl around on their knees to graze but you go to catch them and they sprint and prance away from you like reindeer. I'm hoping he gets what he needs from mommas milk. If not, He'll have to get really lame before I come after him again. Good thing I got all their tails and balls banded already.

New Holland 660 baler, will not make a tight bale

Having trouble making a tight bale. Have relaced the belts, swaped out the tension valve from another baler and turn it in for maximum bale density, swaped out one of the tension cyclinders from another baler, bled out the system.

Bale density pressure guage goes up to about 2000 psi when the bale is about 1/3 full, it drops off some at the 3/4 to full mark, not sure if that is normal.

Any help would be much appreciated.
